First time at SHU, and man am I sorry I didn't find this place sooner. This is an extraordinary sushi restaurant with A+++ fish, incredibly creative prepared dishes, and some off-menu items that rival the best plates in the city.
Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice is my wife's favorite starter, but she needs it prepared without mayonnaise. Some places will accommodate, others won't -- I'm happy to report that despite being insanely busy at the height of dinner service, SHU happily filled my wife's request. The tuna was exceptionally fresh with a good jolt of spice, the rice patties crisp and warm. A great start.
Toro Tartare Sushi with CavIar was rich and flavor-packed without being too salty; White Fish Tempura was crisp and tasty, with a rice wine vinegar sauce giving the dish a welcome pop of acid. "Spoon Sashimi," which they offer with uni, ikura and other items that would usually go in a little rice boat, was novel and bright tasting, and enjoyably lighter without the rice.
But, the absolute star of the show was the off-menu creamy pasta with caviar and shaved fresh truffle. Perfectly cooked spaghetti was tossed in a sauce of cream and soy, which was rich and flavorful without being heavy; then, a generous dollop of black caviar was nestled in the center before the entire dish was covered in black truffle shavings. Rich, indulgent, immensely flavorful, and utterly satisfying. The best pasta dish I've had in a very long time.
The decor has an upscale feel, though it remains within the standard look of a sushi restaurant. It's a busy place, so the noise level is high, but that volume felt completely in line with the energy and the crowd that was having a great time. You should know: while the traditional sushi items are priced at pace with most other sushi bars around the area, the specials and off-menu items can be expensive (the pasta was $60, and that was for the small portion -- full portion was $90). So, while this may not be your twice a week place, it's perfect for a special occasion, or just any night when you feel you need a treat.
Really, with so many great sushi places in the city, it takes a huge swing to rise to the top, and SHU most definitely hit a grand slam tonight.
