The Best Restaurants in Birmingham, Alabama | Eater Atlanta

"Trendy yet cozy, Shu Shop is part izakaya and part bar. Shu Shop’s vibe is a stark contrast from Birmingham’s other ramen slingers — it’s moody, a tad more upscale, and caters to a slightly older audience. The menu is short and sweet, sticking to what Shu Shop knows best." - Sarra Sedghi

I ordered the ramen. It was just okay. But it’s a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. They have much better options if you eat meat but for vegetarian & vegan dishes, it is extremely limited.

One of my favorite restaurants in downtown Birmingham. The ambiance is great, not noisy at all and with a very cool vibe. Service is top-notch and the food is amazing. The ramen is cooked to perfection with layers of flavor.

Came in for a late dinner. Ordered multiple things from the menu. Ordered the pups, they were horrible. Strange bitter taste, we both tried to eat them but they were definitely offensive to our palate. I told the waitress multiple times that we did not like them and couldn’t eat them. She never had a response. I spoke with the host about the taste. He then said he would have the manager to come by. The manager never came to the table! He sent a message by the server that it wouldn’t be removed from the check and he was sorry that it wasn’t good. Horrible customer service!!!! Never mind all the other items that we purchased! NEVER AGAIN!!!! Cook good food and maybe this won’t be an issue!

Google
Shu Shop is a great ramen restaurant in downtown Birmingham. The ramen was delicious and the cocktails were very good. I usually don’t like ginger in my drinks but the hostess insisted so I tried it and I was pleased I did. The only thing I can take away from service is that we were told 15-20 minute wait but it ended up being 60-65 minutes. The inside had very nice mood lighting. And the staff were very nice and professional. I will def be coming back for more!

I have ate at this restaurant about 5 times now and NEVER had an issue with food and service. I do get this one particular waitress that is not really mean nor friendly and it’s off putting. Imagine trying to eat your food and you kind of have someone watching and hovering over you? I’ve had her twice and each time I felt weird. Particularly today, I ordered the peach ice cream and matcha cookies and I did not like it because the cookies were hard, had no flavor and the icecream had a very strong alcoholic flavor that left a BAD TASTE in my mouth, it just doesn’t work well. . I was not a fan of this because it was not mentioned in the description. I asked for it to be removed because I did not not eat it and I was told “ item can’t be removed because you do not like it” and I found it to be a very weird policy especially if you see the whole item is untouched and customer asked for check to pay for the rest of the items BUT that one. I will continue to come here but I am not a fan of some of the waitress/waiter’s attitude. IAN is a great waiter!! He was so kind to me and my friends whenever we got assigned to him! The crab claws and spicy miso ramen TASTE SO GREAT THOUGH! 🩷

Google
Heard a lot about this place and did give it a try. The food was amazing but wish the waitress be more polite. We did order for the hot tea and it wasn’t good, which we. Had asked to see if they can take it back. It was a blunt NO , stating it would only be possible if it were not prepared well. The portions were a bit small compared to regular other ramen places. Over all a good place could be must better with service.

Google
Great restaurant with a limited but wholesome menu of ramen dishes along with small plates and snacks. Located right across from the beautiful Alabama theatre, the interior is a dark and intimate setup with real oil lamps (don't touch!) and friendly, helpful hostess and table service. My only minor complaints would be the limited menu and just how incredibly dark 🕶️ it is inside the restaurant. Other than that, it's a great experience. ❤️

Yelp
I've been to this restaurant multiple times over the past 2-3 years, and each time it's always a wonderful experience! A few weeks ago I took my friend there before going to a concert, she was visiting from Atlanta. The vibe is so chic and inviting, I always feel comfortable there. There's a ton of style in throughout the restaurant, which you don't see often when dining. Also the music is always on point, you can't not enjoy yourself there! As far as food and service, they are excellent! Make sure you get the crab claws - you'll regret it if you skip over them. The servers are always pleasant and knowledgable of the menu. My friend enjoyed her visit to Birmingham and Shu Shop was a big reason why!! I look forward to making time to go back :)

Yelp
Here's an updated 4-star review for Shu Shop: --- Shu Shop has a unique vibe with good service. The ambiance is darkly lit, giving it a cool, intimate atmosphere that's perfect for a cozy meal. I had the spicy miso ramen with extra noodles, and it was rich and flavorful with just the right amount of heat. The extra noodles made it even more satisfying. The Brussels sprouts were also a highlight--crispy and well-seasoned. While the ramen was really good, it didn't quite blow me away, but overall, Shu Shop is definitely worth a visit, and I'm excited to try more of their menu!

Yelp
What a fun, moody spot for a cozy dinner! Even though this is a small spot in downtown, they usually can seat you pretty quickly, and the whole space has a unique softly lit ambiance! They have a lovely drink menu of cocktails, wines, and sake. I had the ginger daiquiri which was sweet and tasty. My friend had the lowball, which was a nonalcoholic cocktail. The food menu features small plates that are actually quite big. I had the unagi don which was a generous portion for a small plate and really tasty. The ramen has a good broth which you can customize with a spice bomb, but the noodles were a bit overcooked and you can tell they are cooked from dry rather than fresh. The service was quick and they are helpful with recs. Overall, a vibey intimate spot for dinner in downtown!

Yelp
Shu shop is a whole vibe and I love it. On a cold winter day, there's no better spot than Shu Shop with a warm bowl of ramen and some hot sake. I love some spice but warning on the spice bomb addition for the ramen! I'd start with a little at a time Also- get the Brussels.
google avatar

Chalandra G.

Yelp
Came on a Friday and was able to get seated in 10 minutes. The Brussels sprouts and seasoned rice are super good! We ordered those and some pork gyoza. The catfish my friend got was super good and gave a surprising taste! The Tonkotsu Ramen was rich and filling. We were seated upstairs and it gave a very intimate feel to the experience with only two other tables up here.

Yelp
Came here while on a business trip. So glad I stumbled upon this place. The food was delicious! I had an amazing smoked yellowtail collar.

Yelp
I've been back a few times. The food is pretty much always good.... When this place is open. They are hardly open. I mean like I have to check to make sure they are open before I head there because they are closed so much. Very annoying. Like I said, good food when I can actually eat it
google avatar

Tia J.

Yelp
This place was like a well oiled machine. I was seated promptly, and everything I ordered was brought out quickly. The popcorn appetizer was my favorite, not sure if it was just for Sidewalk Fest. I loved the Brussels sprouts!!! And the Ramen was great. My only complaint I would say , was having to pay$2 for the egg, but it was worth it. Would definitely go back

Yelp
This place is all dark and moody and there's definitely a whole cool vibe going on. If you are 37 or older, you'll need to use the table light to read the menu, cause this place almost as dark as a 1998 Abercrombie store. Wear your young hip clothes. Do not dress like a mom with 3 kids who found a last minute sitter, cause you will stick out like a bowling ball in a punch bowl and wonder at exactly what point you stopped being effortlessly cool. We got there around 8:30 for dinner. The restaurant is tiny and there was a wait- 2 couples ahead of us. Our name was put on a list, but we were the only ones on the list. Then a party of 3 came in maybe 10 minutes after us- and the hostess knew them. Hugs were exchanged and they were seated in a downstairs booth 15 minutes before we were seated upstairs in the tunnel at a table that could've fit 6 people. Not sure what that was all about- it wasn't space and the number of people in our party versus theirs- but I felt like it was a thing. I didn't like how that made me feel. No one likes to feel second class. Our waitress did not smile one time. My husband tried so hard to get even a tiny smile. Maybe she was tired, but she wasn't very helpful when we were deciding what to order. But the food. The food was SO GOOD. We got several of the snacks/small plates that were good but the portions were just so tiny. The dumplings were mostly dumpling and not much filling. The fish was just a few strips. The hush puppy things were an adequate size/amount (and they were SO GOOD) The ramen was excellent. We both got the spicy miso ramen and I added burnt ends (which I do not recommend- it made it too oily and heavy. If you love burnt ends, get them in the vegetarian bowl. Order the bowls as they come- these people know how to perfectly combine food. Trust them on this.) I wanted to give it 5 stars because the ramen was so good... but the portions were on the small side. And for whatever happened with the people that were sat before us- I spent entirely too much time wondering what was up. If it wasn't a thing and there was a legitimate explanation, it would've been considerate for the hostess to communicate that. But the food was so good, we will likely go back...even if we are seated last, and our waitress is in a funk, and we have to find some way to split small odd numbered foods between even numbered 2 of us. The ramen is that good.

Yelp
This place was a vibe! Open late on weeknights, solid ramen menu with other tasty options if you're looking for something else. You must get the crab claws! They're perfect to share or just to enjoy on your own. They are fried and the perfect bite-size really delicious. We couldn't get enough of them. The portion is pretty good as well. As a as non pork eater, there wasn't many ramen options but the seafood Ramen did the trick. Topped it off with a spice bomb and it was delicious. Service was attentive and friendly. This could be a moody date spot has enough privacy for solo dining or you can a couple friends in a booth.

Yelp
My experience at Shu Shop was really disappointing. The service was incredibly slow--we waited far too long for our food, and during that time, no one came by to check on us or update us on our order. When the food finally arrived, it was overly salty and unappetizing. It's frustrating because I had heard good things about the place, but the lack of attention and the poorly prepared food made for a really unpleasant visit. I definitely won't be coming back.

Yelp
This a special date night spot for my husband and I when we want to pretend we still live in New York. Dark moody vibes and pretty details. Modern casual service and great food. This is somewhat of a niche place in that it's style seems to be prioritized over some customer focused amenities, but that's a tradeoff we're happy to accept. Wish they took reservations but we don't mind going for an early dinner to avoid waiting. I'm not a big Ramen person but I enjoy many of the small and large plates! The Brussels sprouts are a favorite of ours. I'd like to see more of a rotating menu but there is some variety. This will continue to stay in our date night rotation!

Yelp
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Shu Shop. I had the brussel sprouts, scallops, and dumplings. The kaubaru oaxaca cocktail was amazing. April, the bartender, provided excellent recommendations.
google avatar

Nia A.

Yelp
Had a 30 or so minute wait this time around on a Friday. Short ribs are ok and crab claws are good with the lemon. Not enough lemon and way too much of the mayo sauce which wasn't that good. Short ribs are good but a TINY portion for $20. They even served me just a straight bone. Probably wouldn't order that again but they don't have my seafood ramen currently. Sad face.
google avatar

Greg F.

Yelp
This place was highly recommended. I got the seafood Ramen. It was good, Ramen, but not killer. The calamari in the ramen was awesome and should be an app. The fried shrimp was soggy and left it as a weird texture. Trendy vibe. Personally, I thought the prices for drinks were a bit extreme. It's not my favorite but not a bad place. If you like spicy, I would recommend getting a spice bomb. It is like a table spoon of chili paste, and maybe some Sriracha stirred in for 2 bucks.

Yelp
Enjoyed Shu Shop on a date night with my husband. The ambiance was absolute perfection. Dark and mysterious and I love that it's for adults 21+ only. Service was great! Our orders were taken quickly and delivered as the food was cooked. Speaking of the food- I know this is a Ramen place, but we got so caught up with all of the small plates that we didn't even make it to the Ramen! The small plates were all delicious. The mixed sashimi was a favorite of mine. We'll definitely be back to try the ramen!

Yelp
Ok, I'll admit, my food was AMAZING, but everything else was greatly disappointing. First off, our party arrived to a rude employee asking for our IDs (even though we were just there for dinner). Everyone in our group had theres, except for me, who had forgotten it at home. I was told, "if you looked older, I would let you in." Yes, I'm in my 20s, but this kinda started our meal off with a sour note. After returning with my ID, I was seated last at a party of 8, and I was forced to hang on to the side of the table with one cheek hanging off. They only had one extra chair, so I was greatly uncomfortable all evening. Impulsively ordered the pinky finger (or whatever it's called) cocktail. The drink arrived, which me and my friend both ordered, and I literally almost threw up. The waitress recommended, but it literally just tasted like ocean water. It was just as expensive as our entree, and I pretty much was pissed from that point forward. If you do it right, I'm sure it's amazing, just had a subpar night overall

Yelp
I met my friends up for late night dinner at the Shu Shop. Everything was super delicious. The House chilled sake was refreshing and smooth. This is my second visit and so far, I have yet to be disappointed. The atmosphere is very conducive for having a great time. Music was good. It was dark when we went but I could still see the menu and my food. Everything was delicious!

Yelp
Food always amazing I enjoy this spot annually when the jazz festival is in town. Service is good staff always attentive.

Yelp
Best scallops we have ever eaten. Great service. Always busy but we got there early and seated immediately. Awesome ramen
google avatar

Yelp
I developed a taste for high quality ramen when visiting NYC so I was eager to try Shu Shop out. They are very strictly 21+ and carded most people in line coming in. Inside is a nice bar with a ton of drink options and booth seating in the bar area, high top tables in the back with dim lighting in a dark environment. We started with the octopus hushpuppies that were outstanding. Then I got the spicy miso ramen that was really good. Definitely spicier than others I've had but the flavor of the broth along with top notch noodles and ingredients made it delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is amazing!! This is the spot for Ramen and sake, but please don't forget the small plates and appetizers! From the hot and sour Brussels to the miso butter scallops that just melt in your mouth. Just go ahead and make your tastebuds happy! The service was outstanding and there is this cozy New York vibe in my opinion. The atmosphere is dark and sexy! Great for a date night! Now for the sake I recommend the house. It's smooth with a sprite after bite but not sweet. It was just lovely...but they also have a pleather to choose from so have fun!
google avatar

Yelp
What an amazing place to go for a weekend date night! The ambience with the music, the decor and locations for photos in the room made it a great evening for my wife and I. The food was superb! The tako hush puppies are a must have for anybody who is looking to add to the overall experience. My favorite item on the list hands-down! We sat at the bar, although I don't drink. They had a large variety of options, including warm and cold beverages my wife enjoyed her drink, and I thoroughly enjoyed my, hot tea. The service was killer, including bartenders who actually care about the patrons taken considerable time to check in on everybody at the bar multiple times. If we lived in that city, we could totally see ourselves making that every weekend date night spot.
google avatar

Porchia R.

Yelp
This is my FAVORITE spot!! For flavorful food. Plates are smaller but so worth it. I also have tried the short rib! Wheww so much flavor and comes with white rice. It's hard to decide between getting the short rib plate or the crab claws.
google avatar

Cortez D.

Yelp
Hands down the BEST Ramen resturant in the Birmingham area. The broth in the pork Ramen is the best I've ever had. You can't go wrong with any of their custom made cocktails. The Ambiance here definitely gives date night and romance with a relaxed atmosphere. Would recommend to ANYONE who loves good Ramen
google avatar

Tanvee S.

Yelp
This place was amazing! I came on a Friday night at around 6:30 PM and there is a 45 minute wait. The place is a lot smaller than I thought and they only allow parties up to four, so be prepared to wait if you come on a weekend evening! It's really close to Pizitz Food hall, so it was easy to go over to Pizitz while we waited and grab an appetizer/drink before our table was ready. I wasn't sure what to expect because I am not really into Ramen but the food was AMAZING (Spicy Ramen was so good), the ambience was cute (candlelit/fun music/centered around a bar) and the drinks were phenomenal! For a cute restaurant like this, the prices were very affordable ($14/ramen & $14 a drink). Would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Peach T.

Yelp
Beautiful ambiance! Textured wall paper and gorgeous wood paneled walls that are eclectic and inviting. A perfect little gem of a place. Our waitress was very kind and quick. I got the spicy ramen and my friends got several other dishes- all of which we really enjoyed. I would love to come back when I visit Birmingham in the future. Thank you for having us.
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying the Spicy Miso Ramen is absolutely delicious and flavorful. I love spicy food and the broth had the perfect amount of spice too. I'm not a fan of the this octopus appetizer though. It's way too tangy and kind of bitter. But that won't stop me from returning I'll just try other options on the menu. I had one old fashion cocktail- which was made with extra love because I only needed that one for a good buzz. Cheers to the bartender. The service was great- friendly, quick, & efficient.
google avatar

Sara R.

Yelp
I would love to give this place 5 stars BUT it took forever for the bartender to even acknowledge us. We sat at the bar for at least 15 minutes while she held a deep personal conversation with another man. Then she did everything else except greet us. FINALLY, when I asked someone else for a server/bartender she decided to come greet us. She could have at least said hello in the 10 times she walked by and or stated she will be with us in a moment...this was way too hard. Once we ordered everything came out fast by a food runner NOT her. The food was excellent...service F terrible!!!!
google avatar

Jasmine T.

Yelp
A friend and I stopped by here one Friday night and fell in love with the sultry, New York esc decor and ambiance. It's perfect for a sexy date night night or intimate catch up with friends. The staff was super friendly and helped us learn our way around the menu. The crab claws are so tasty! We ate them all before I could get a pic. I'm a tequila lover so the Kusuburu was perfect for me. The black salt made it super cute. My friend loved her spicy ramen but the seafood had me hooked! I've been back around happy hour time and sat at the bar for a fab experience as well!
google avatar

Jada C.

Yelp
Shu Shop in Downtown Birmingham is really worth a try! Especially if you like Ramen. Although I'm on Keto I did taste a tiny piece of my husband's Ramen and it was so good. I ordered two of the small plates as my entree-- the scallops & the Brussel Sprouts-- and they were mouth watering. I also got two soft boiled eggs and it was a tasty addition. The cocktail I had was interesting but tasted like a mountain do without the fizz. It was made with Gin & eggs whites but I forget the name. The feng Shu was our favorite party. Nice low key environment with nice service and a generous size bar. Will definitely be back!

Drew L.

Yelp
Love the ambiance and the menu, but I've always had mediocre service here. Once my friend and I sat down at empty seats at the bar and a server asked us to move because someone at a booth wanted to "switch between the booth and the bar"....what? Recently took a date here and when the bartender finally got around to acknowledging us he had this attitude as if we needed to hurry up and order because he was so busy. I ordered a highball and waited almost 15 minutes because he then went out to smoke a cigarette. Would recommend Bamboo or EastWest for a better experience downtown.

Jim T.

Yelp
Excellent! Love the scallops, crab claws, drinks, ramen, LATE NIGHT kitchen, service (Evan is great!), everything really!
google avatar

Peachees S.

Yelp
Food always fresh and delicious. Great atmosphere. Lemon drop, Fried crab claws and spicy ramen were all amazing as well
google avatar

Nina C.

Yelp
Ambiance gives "speak easy vibes" smooth Jazz playing, GREAT SCENTS of good food in the air!! I'm trying Shu Shop for the first time and jumped to write this review before even tasting my food or drink...... I ordered a "Pinky Ring" cocktail and Spicy Miso soup.......
google avatar

Rida S.

Yelp
this is not my first time at Shu Shop- at first i was a little apprehensive because the last time i came during covid I wasn't the biggest fan of their ramen but coming back a couple of years later it seems they've changed the recipe of their ramen and i'm a really big fan of it! I ordered the Vegetarian Ramen with an egg and also their Tuna Tatake which was also very good. I did not see much covid restrictions in place but they did have sprayable hand sanitizer on the table! def a 4/5 I will be back again!
google avatar

Crystal K.

Yelp
I came into town for work and was at a conference of about 110 people. I wanted to have dinner with a colleague and needed something vegetarian friendly. We loved everything about this place. Good food, drinks, and staff. Our server was so helpful and made various recommendations for drinks and a few food suggestions. The vibe was super solid and we all agreed it was our favorite location during our trip. I also wanted to add, they had period products available in the bathroom at no cost and as a woman, really appreciated the thoughtfulness. Would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Russell G.

Yelp
Came here for after thanksgiving dinner. If you are looking for something different, this is a place to go. Nice music, low lighting i with l booths. Bar setting is available too. We all had crab claws and we were pleased with our orders. I had kimchi with mine. My daughter had beef short ribs and the wife had Brussel Sprouts. Everyone was pleased with their sides as well. The menu and atmosphere is mainly Japanese. The food comes on what they call small plates but the servings are not truly that small. The kimchi was but it was filling. Never had kimchi and wanted to try it. Glad I did. Great environment. The service was really good. They stayed on top of everything and visited the table frequently. Very happy we went there.

Amy S.

Yelp
Amazing ramen and atmosphere in the heart of Birmingham. Drinks are delicious and stiff.

Yelp
You walk into an amazing place and get greeted by the nicest host. The food was amazing and the service was

Blake G.

Yelp
Very tasty Ramen. Spicy Miso was my favorite. Tako puppies were good but I'll try another app next time. Recommendations: I would like a couple more additions to the Ramen bowl: other half of the half boiled egg, green onion shoots, etc. load it up! Also would like a Japanese-American fusion Ramen bowl that is sweet and spicy Solid Ramen right in Birmingham. Have I eaten better? Yes, but not in Alabama
google avatar

Liz H.

Yelp
Excellent vibe and food is delicious the Brussels were my favorite and my husband loved the dumplings

Tori P.

Yelp
Food is great and flavorful. We love the spicy ramen with burnt ends. Their noodles are fabulous and service is always top tier!
google avatar

Amos O.

Yelp
This place is one of my favorites to eat at in Birmingham! Have known about it through my wife for a while but I've recently moved to the city and I would eat it everyday if could! My personal favorite is the Spicy Miso Ramen, you can't beat it!! The atmosphere is unique and classy, their music playlist is a chefs kiss! There is normally a wait but the hostess does a great job at making it move pretty fast and providing reassurance! Expect a wait normally but it's well worth it! Best ramen !!!!!!

Katelynn S.

Yelp
Very good! I've been forgetting to try this place for forever and I'm so glad I finally got in! Great portion sizes for what you're paying and the flavor was great too. Will definitely be back!

Blake B.

Yelp
This is a hole in the wall restaurant with great service and a great atmosphere. Awesome food and better people! Great first date spot!
google avatar

Yelp
Food is ALWAYS incredible and the service is top notch. I just wish it was open in my nights off!
google avatar

Abby W.

Yelp
Flavors are top notch. Atmosphere rocks. Like seriously. Service is pretty good. Prices are not insane. One thing. The food has a lot of sodium. Please give us larger water containers on the table. This is an odd request, I know. But please. It'll get you to five starts for me.
