Update: perhaps I’m a bit harsh, I would say the omakase was not worth the price. However, if they use the same quality of ingredients on their regular menu, then it should be good. Tried their omakase, which is only served few times a week and by reservation only. It came with 14 courses, started with a delicious filo wrapped jumbo shrimp, and spicy fried edamame, second course was chicken on the skewer then a plate of sashimi from different parts of the world. They were of great quality and very fresh. Then it was down hill all the way…… We proceeded to have 10 nigiri one after another, fish (sashimi) on top of compacted rice. Of course the fish was fresh but by the time we finished, we felt only a stomach full of rice. There were no creativities nor varieties for the expensive omakase. We were expecting curated delicacies, but it was just a parade of nigiri.

Update: I had to come back for dinner. My wife and I were just discussing that we couldn't remember the last time we ended a meal thinking "that was fantastic", this is it! It was all fantastic, but the BACK9DALLAS may be the best roll I've had! I recently visited Shun by Yama Sushi for lunch, and I can confidently say it’s a fantastic new addition to the sushi scene! The atmosphere is modern and inviting, with sleek decor and comfortable seating that made for a relaxing midday meal. I opted for their sushi lunch special, and it exceeded my expectations. The plate featured a beautiful assortment of nigiri (salmon, tuna, and others) and maki rolls, all incredibly fresh and flavorful. The presentation, as you can see in the photo I took, was impeccable—served on a stylish slate platter with ginger, wasabi, and a side of soy sauce. The fish melted in my mouth, and the rice was perfectly seasoned. What really stood out was the great value for the price. The lunch special was reasonably priced, making it an excellent deal for the quality and quantity of sushi I received. The service was prompt and friendly, adding to the overall enjoyable experience. If you’re looking for high-quality sushi, this is definitely a spot to hit!

I have to edit my review after a second visit. This time the Nigiri sushi was dry and the rolls that we ordered, which was the baked scallop roll and also a salmon roll which were both doused in mayo. The food quality here seems to be inconsistent after two visits. Not sure I’ll be going back. Also, I find the noise level in this restaurant to be extremely loud to the point of irritation. This is a very nice sushi restaurant in a developing area in McKinney. The quality of the Nigiri is excellent and definitely on par with some of the better Japanese restaurants you find in Dallas. The restaurant is beautiful inside. They have a glass fish chandelier that’s pretty cool. We tried a few rolls and they were all very good. My only negative feedback about the restaurant is that it is surprisingly large. The restaurant has open ceilings and it tends to be loud in the restaurant like you’re eating in a Luby’s cafeteria, which takes away from some of the ambience of the restaurant. Many times Japanese Izakaya on the smaller side, and the noise is contained. Service was very friendly and despite the noise level, we will definitely be going back and making this one of our regular places in the area to eat sushi. Next time we might try sitting at the sushi bar. Some of the sushi rolls are a bit creative. By the way, I do not recommend the Shun roll. I don’t think pesto works with truffles on a sushi roll.

Incredible sushi - best we have had in DFW since moving here from Chicago 5 years ago! We came in for omakase to celebrate my birthday and the food, atmosphere, and service was spectacular. Drinks were a little slow to come out but we chalked that up to it being a busy night in a new restaurant. Definitely recommend and Chef Kenny Chong is a master of his craft. Can’t wait to come back!

Google
Almost every roll we ate tasted the same because they put so many sauces in them. If you are looking for authentic sushi, definitely not this place. Not many choices of fish meat for special rolls. I saw crab meat/California style roll in almost every roll on the menu.

Hands down the best sushi place ever! The decor of the restaurant is very modern, the staff is super friendly, the food is beyond amazing. Nothing but GREAT words to say about this place! 100% recommend going here over and over again.

🍣Fresh Fresh Fresh!🍣 I absolutely love sushi so my date asked me to find a venue that I had not visited before. I found this cute little sushi place in a perfect McKinney location right off of 121. The restaurant is bright with a modern vibe. I ordered a strawberry basil cocktail and swapped out tequila for rum. It went perfectly with the sushi. I ordered several of my favorite rolls; spicy tuna, spicy salmon and my date ordered a spider roll. Everything tasted extremely fresh. I can’t wait to visit again.

A Must-Try Japanese Dining Experience! Shun by Yama Sushi is an absolute gem! From the moment we walked in, the ambiance was stunning—modern yet warm, with elegant decor and a breathtaking suspended glass fish chandelier that sets the tone for an upscale dining experience. The food? Next-level perfection. Every dish was crafted with precision, fresh ingredients, and incredible flavors. The truffle salmon sashimi was a masterpiece, balancing richness with delicate umami notes. The crudo platter was beautifully plated, fresh, and bursting with vibrant flavors. The creamy seafood udon was indulgent and packed with depth—each bite was a delight. Service was impeccable! The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and passionate about the menu. Every recommendation was spot on. If you’re looking for a high-end Japanese restaurant that delivers both in taste and experience, Shun is the place to be.

Yelp
This place is popping up all over my social media so we came here for our post Valentines celebration. We order a good variety of food and were impressed by it all. I couldn't determine a favorite dish bc they were all so awesome. I only could decide that of all the dishes I only had ONE dish I could decide that I didn't like as much and it's not to say it wasn't good, it just wasn't my jam. The dish that surprised me was the eggplant. I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as the others since it's "just" eggplant, but it was very well executed. Service was amazing! Our server was the perfect amount of attentive and so sweet! The owner came by and checked on us at some point as well. Definitely a place we'd come back to!

Yelp
Everything was excellent, but if you come here for one thing let it be the sushi - this is the freshest, best quality raw fish I've had so far in the DFW area. Deliciously done nigiri and a beautiful chirashi bowl were our standouts of the night! We also had the wagyu rice - also delicious, but nothing crazy in my opinion. I would definitely skip it next time for more sushi. We were one of the first people in the restaurant, so our service was fast (and polite as well!). We'll come back for another date night ASAP!

Yelp
I wanted to love this place SO BAD. I really did. It's literally 2 mins from my house and the District 121 area is SUCH a beautifully designed entertainment hub. We are so lucky for such a cool spot to be right down the road, so I'm always rooting for restaurants over there to do well. Also, I've heard nothing but rave reviews of Shoyo in Dallas and I read that Shun's exec chef and partner, is a former sushi chef at Shoyo, and previously worked at Tei Tei and Akira Back (HUGE fans of both), so I had very high expectations for Shun and was SO excited to go here for a date night. But to say I was let down is a huge understatement. Womp womp womp. I will say, the quality of the fish is OUTSTANDING but the dishes themselves all fell flat. Atmosphere: gorgeous restaurant...10/10 Service: 7/10 Drinks: 6/10 Food: 6/10 - Japanese Black Manhattan (8/10) - good drink. - Strawberry Basil (4/10) - too muddled, too sweet. Imagine trying to drink syrup from a slushy. - Nigiri: salmon belly, yellowtail belly, amberjack, Uni (10/10) - the quality and freshness of the fish was impeccable - Snowcrab nigiri (5/10) - would not order this again...was expecting something drizzled in butter like at Uchiko but it was plain and undressed and blah - Salmon Yuzu mustard (7/10)- this dish was good enough...the salmon was fresh, the yuzu was tasty, but the truffle on top was completely unnecessary. It gave zero actual truffle flavor/essence so if you closed your eyes, it just felt like you were eating sashimi with a bit of dirt. Yum, right? - Hamachi Crudo (7/10) - fish quality was great, texture of the crispy daikon and radish was a nice complement, but as a composed dish, it was lacking flavor so we added soy sauce and it was fine. - Panseared scallop (5/10)- zero sear on the scallop. The accompaniments were good, if not a tad salty, but the scallop itself was just raw and warm. For me, the combo of raw and warm give me an immediate ick. - Foie gras skewer (9/10) - hard to go wrong with Foie gras - Wagyu & Uni sushi (6.5/10) - the Uni was creamy and fresh, but the wagyu added nothing. It wasn't torched/seared enough so none of the beautiful meat flavor came through...it just tasted like Uni nigiri with something chewy. For $25/ piece, this was such a massive letdown. - Grilled salmon (9/10) - this dish was delicious. The salmon (although hardly "grilled") was buttery and falling apart and the pesto gave it a very Italian vibe. Unexpected at a Japanese restaurant, but still very good. - Lobster Creamy Udon (0/10) - I can't tell you how unappetizing this was. The sauce was so watery that it was more like broth. It's as if someone added too much stock and did not let it reduce. I wish I could go back in the kitchen and fix it myself bc it had SO MUCH POTENTIAL, but lacked execution. Needed more seasoning and something to thicken the sauce...either a slurry or more reduction. We took one bite and couldn't eat any more. We gave the feedback to the kitchen and they offered to bring us something else but we refused bc at that point we just wanted to leave and they didn't even comp it. They had an opportunity to make it right and they failed to do so, making the entire experience all the more disappointing. Overall, I would only recommend coming here if you just wanted nigiri and sashimi. For any dish that actually requires some thought or any kind of layering of flavors, they entirely miss the mark IMHO. We spent the entire evening wishing we had gone to Uchiko which is our usual date night spot.

Yelp
Was excited to try the chirashi bowl and omakase... both were okay. Felt the chirashi bowl was a little lacking in flavor and the omakase flavors were all the same. The foie gras skewer was pretty good.... Was also pretty impressed with the tako wasabi! One of the better ones I've had!

Yelp
Food was amazing. Such good choices. Friendly staff. It was super busy so it took a while to get help, but once we got someone everyone was great and attentive. The owner even came over at the end to apologize and she was super friendly.

Joy M.

Yelp
Great addition to the Yama franchise with a more upscale touch. Nice size restaurant with plenty of seating, along with a patio that opens up to the main courtyard of District 121. They are currently in their soft opening. Service was excellent and food was also excellent. Hope they will offer some type of HH menu as we've been going to Common Table next door for their HH.

Yelp
The first thing you notice when you walk into SHUN is that it is a nice place - a really nice place! The second thing is that there is a serious focus on customer service. We (my wife and I) walked in with no reservation. We were given a table, but informed that service was somewhat delayed due to the unexpectedly large number of customers, but they would do their best to take care of us - 3 different staff members gave us that message and apologized for it. I requested a glass of wine and when it did not appear before our first dishes arrived, I inquired as to the status of my order. A very apologetic young lady got it taken care of immediately - hard to ask for more than that. The SHUN staff is impressive - they radiate customer service. At one point, I managed to launch one of my chopsticks off the table. As I was trying to figure out how I was going to eat my sushi with one chopstick, I saw one of the staff (not our waitress) go by and I raised my hand - it would have been easy for her to overlook me, but she immediately stopped and asked how she could be of service. A new set of chopsticks was quickly acquired. The most important part - of course, is the food. When you look at the menu it becomes very clear that this is not just another sushi place - they have a wide range of eclectic offerings that all sounded very interesting (not what you typically expect). We ordered the Shishito peppers, the octopus salad (Tako Kani Sansai), the miso pork belly skewers, the Hudson Valley Foie Gras skewer, the Louisiana roll, and the Chief's Choice Omakase sushi with the Tres Leche Matcha for desert. Fantastic food! I was a big fan of the peppers - they were a little too spicy for my wife but she still ate 3-4 of them. The octopus salad exceeded our expectations - very unusual, but tasty. Sometimes a bit hard to identify what you were eating, but it tasted great! The pork belly skewers were a good value and what you would expect - Great! The Hudson Valley Foie Gras skewer was a big chunk of grilled liver (at least that is what it looked like to me). As I am not a fan, I let my wife enjoy it - she really liked it and was bummed that they were out of the scallop/foi gras skewers. The Louisiana roll was good - I would order it again, but after I tried some of the other offerings. The Chief's Choice Omakase sushi was a good move - they were not so large that you couldn't eat them all, and each one was excellent in it's own way. Very tasty, but I will probably try the SHUN Bara Chirashi next time (and there will definitely be a next time). The Tres Leche Matcha was eclectic, but my wife really liked it (I don't do deserts). The bottom line is that we are very happy to have such a high quality restaurant so close with sufficient seating that you at least have a possibility of getting seated with no reservation. Highly recommended.

Yelp
My family and I had dinner here Saturday night. The decor is very nice, but they had it way too cold in there and it was already very cold outside. We ordered a number of items and the star was the tuna dish under cold plates. We love sushi and Japanese food in general, but the rest of the food was just ok. I think the worst of the dishes was the chicken kaarage. They have whole entire chicken tenders (3) and they were bland. We made a 40 minute drive that we don't plan to make again. Our waitress was very nice, the owner? Manager? Came by to check on us, and they will never let you go thirsty. If you want delicious sushi and other dishes that will hit every time, checkout Uchiba and Uchiko.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying my stars are strictly on all components of food, service, price, atmosphere combined. I saw this place all over social media and was very excited to have another sushi spot in McKinney. The place is absolutely beautiful inside; I loved the decor. The hostess was super friendly, my friend and I sat at the sushi bar, the chef in front of us was nice. Our waiter wasn't terrible but he wasn't super attentive. Had to order a few things through the sushi chef. They have a decent sized menu with lots to offer. Of course I wanted to try everything. We started off with the shishito peppers, foie gras skewers, pork belly skewers, tako wasabi and spicy scallop nigiri. The peppers were really nice. Great flavor and cooked perfectly. The foie gras was ok, honestly it was missing a flavor and just felt like it was drenched in sauce. The one at Uchi is much better in my opinion. The pork belly skewers were cooked fine, but the flavor was underwhelming. For those price points it should be a flavor explosion every bite! The spicy scallop nigiri was pretty good; they didn't just smother it with mayo, Hanakin still hands down my favorite with that. The Tako wasabi is very good probably my favorite thing I ate here. Theirs and Sushi Nunu have this item to a T. We then ordered the sizzling A5 fried rice; presentation was of course an A+, but taste was disappointing. It needed salt or some sort of seasoning. It honestly was just hot beef and rice with bland flavors. We also ordered the lunch size chirashi, madai sashimi, salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, sweet shrimp nigiri, and the Wagyu and uni nigiri. The fish was fresh but the complimentary flavors I'm used to were lacking. When I go to Heian and Hanakin, their sashimi is accompanied by house made sauces, or Japanese peaches, etc. small amounts of something that bring out the flavors of the fish and compliment each other. They just rolled it up and served it on ice. The sweet shrimp was decent, they went skimpy on the fried shrimp head. The Wagyu and uni nigiri was good, but Heian's uni is way better. For the price point per bite, it's just lackluster. We ordered the scallops from the hot plates and it was cooked nicely and I enjoyed the flavors. The cold plate side we ordered the Shiromi tiradito and the hamachi crudo. Both dishes were beautiful and the shiromi was served with theatrics of smoke but the taste on both was just ok. It looked better than it tasted. Which was disappointing. On dishes like that I'm expecting great flavor profiles and I just didn't find that here. We also got the Salmon Yuzu Mustard and this was one of the better dishes we got. All in all, it wasn't terrible, but I personally won't be back because nothing was amazing or memorable. I'm a sushi snob and when I'm forking out money like this for sushi, it's gotta check off all my boxes. Personally I go between 3 spots and the reason I go back is for those amazing flavor profiles. Again this is my opinion and you should definitely try the place out. Just for me it wasn't worth the hype this go around.

Yelp
Shun is a concept by the owners of Yama and Chef Kenny Chong (formerly of Shoyo in Dallas). Chic, date night-worthy decor, full bar, but not pretentious. They have a nice variety of sushi options, rolls, amazing sashimi (our favorite), plus robata, appetizers, and house made desserts. Fish is standout fresh and the chefs put strong attention to detail in the preparation and presentation. We've tried several of the appetizers - all delicious - and one unexpected standout is the edamame. I swear the charred lemon sauce on the edamame should be bottled and sold. The robata skewers are delicious and there are multiple options from which to choose. For us, sashimi and sushi are tops and this place does not disappoint. The menu also offers options for omakase-style dining - having the chefs select and prepare food including the "Kenny special" which is awesome if you want something really special. Dessert was delicious - tried the bread pudding which was like little fried pillowy donuts! Yummy! We plan to be there a lot.

Shelby R.

Yelp
Couldn't be more obsessed with this place. 10/10 on all levels. The wagyu rice was my fav, my wife LOVED all of her fish, the smoked salmon is smoked in house and she said it was the best piece of fish she's ever had. Can't wait to go back.

Travis M.

Yelp
I was poking around Yelp for a sushi that I hadn't been to and came across this spot. Stopped in around 5:15 on Friday to beat the crowd. The ambiance was well thought out and classy. The sushi/omakase bar was well staffed and welcoming. In briefly glanced at the menu before going and realized quick that this place was more about the Nigiri/Sashimi and not the rolls, which is fine... less rolls to read through like every other sushi joint in Collin County. Appetizers- lemon garlic edamame & tempura green beans, both were fantastic. Rolls- they didn't have a huge selection, so I decided to stick with my go to ingredients. California for my 8yo Daughter who said it was the best she ever had...again, she is 8. Spider Roll- well made with the perfect amount of eel sauce. Bites weren't overwhelming, which many places do with soft shell crab. Temptation Roll- absolutely amazing. Flavors came together perfectly. Nigiri- I went a few pieces that are more rare to find fresh locally. Aji, Amberjack, sea Bream, Hamachi Hara and Toro Tuna. Well presented and delicious. To summarize, I am going back and will definitely try more of their menu options. As an Allen resident, It is the sushi spot we needed.

Jackie N.

Yelp
This place is brand new! The vibe is trendy, high end, great/fresh sushi, and the service is amazing! I gave them my feedback and they offered a discount to accommodate the feedback. That's definitely customer service and they just earned a regular! McKinney needs a great sushi place like this one!

Dawn S.

Yelp
Fair price for good sushi, unfortunately falls short for me in comparison to their Yama locations, but overall it's a nice date night spot :)

Vaughn P.

Yelp
Wow... My wife and I were blown away by the quality of the ingredients, the deep flavors and creativity! Great sake list but we loved the cocktails! Glad to have this new spot so close to Allen!

Sissy T.

Yelp
Food is excellent and very reasonable price. Very stylish decor I will come back for sure.

M P.

Yelp
Wow!! I've been a loyal customer to Yama Izakaya, but Shun takes things to the next level. It is a higher end version! From bar, to dining room, to sushi bar, it is glamorous. We went opening night and it was POPPING. I would recommend making a reservation and requesting the sushi bar too. Even though they were extremely busy the staff was tentative! The fish was so fresh and highly recommend the omakase.

Julie U.

Yelp
So delicious! The fish basically melts in your mouth. A new favorite and will be in our rotation. Highly recommend.

Ryan M.

Yelp
10/10. Outstanding food (karagge, lemon oil edamame, double pleasure roll and a variety of sushi). The ambience is calm and relaxing with excellent service. Will be back soon.

Jennifer C.

Yelp
We dined in for lunch at Shun today. We ordered: shishito peppers: topped with bonito flakes, was pretty tasty eggplant miso: overall tasted great, however if used a tiny bit less sugar, would have been perfect Salmon Yuzu mustard: yummy Wagyu on the rock: Japanese Wagyu also on point Miso Pork belly : good but nothing special Miso sea bass: again too sweet, the sauce overpowered, instead of complimenting the natural flavors of the sea bass Eel rice: would have been better if less sweet The premium $80 shun chef sashimi special: really not worth $80 in my opinion. We were very disappointed with this one. Expected more premium fish. Had salmon, tuna, Octopus Madai and another fish i forgot. But overall very basic for the price tag. An assortment of sushi: they did not have my favorite which is hotate scallop. They also did not have any fish from the fish market in Tokyo that they advertised. For a Saturday during lunch time, I think that's very odd.Maybe there was a shipment issue? We had the bluefin toro, salmon belly, yellowtail belly, smoked salmon and uni. Overall not bad. Matcha tres leches: we enjoyed this one. The drinks we had were also good. Manhattan and cucumber high ball-- very refreshing. Overall, I don't think some of the food is worth the price tag. Granted they did have some good dishes. Great ambiance. Good service.

Alex T.

Yelp
Tasted so many delicious dishes. Beautiful restaurant. Service is top notch. 5 stars.

Tiffany V.

Yelp
My favorite part of my visit was the omakase experience. Trusting Chef Kenny to select the courses was the best decision I made. The food was amazing. Probably the best sushi I've ever had. I love all of the Japanese decorations there. I see myself going back often!

Lora S.

Yelp
Excellent service and everything is so good. Sat on the patio which was perfect for the weather today. We will for sure be back again soon. Highly recommend.

Linne S.

Yelp
This was amazing! We started with charred edamame with lemon garlic soy sauce, and brussels sprouts for appetizers. Nothing ordinary about either one of them! The miso sea bass was perfectly cooked, and it came with more of the brussels sprouts. More of those is not a bad thing at all. The pork belly was very good, as was the sizzling wagyu rice. We had a number of kinds of sushi and sashimi - all extremely fresh and presented very artistically. Don't pass up the Toyosu fish market menu (fish from Japan) - the shima aji was so good we even made a sushi convert out of one of our party. Service was excellent too. This is not a cheap place, but it's so good, you won't want to save it for special occasions.

Gunther H.

Yelp
went for lunch just a day after their cold opening and had the sushi combo and bento Wagyu. Food was very tasty and well presented. Their decor is spot on for Japanese authenticity and we will need to return for dinner to sample their extendeed menu.
