The 38 Best Restaurants in Osaka, Japan | Eater

"An evening at Shunsaiten Tsuchiya can feel like a spiritual pilgrimage. Located in a peaceful outskirt of Osaka, the tempura-meets-kaiseki restaurant is in a traditional house with stark Zen interiors. Chef Yukihiko Tsuchisaka cooks with cottonseed oil, both for its frying properties and to honor Osaka’s past as a textile center. As he coats and fries seasonal ingredients like Hokkaido scallops and wakasagi smelt, he makes miniscule adjustments based on the heat of the oil, constantly tinkering with the thickness of the batter or sourness of the dip. Tsuchisaka’s dedication to his craft has made Shunsaiten Tsuchiya the only tempura restaurant to receive two Michelin stars every year since 2012. Best for: For 8,800 yen, the afternoon course lets you sample several cold appetizers followed by the daily tempura that might include crispy fried squid, crab, scallop, asparagus, and prawn." - La Carmina

Wow…the best tempura I ever had! The food is 10 out of 10. They use some very unique ingredients to make them tempura. Also, the batter was so light and the crispiness was just perfect. Very nice atmosphere. We were seated in the private room so we didn’t talk to the chef but the server was so professional and explained to us about every dish. It worth every stars. Will come back next time time I’m in Osaka.

An incredible meal. Somewhat on the outskirts of Osaka but worth the trip. We booked our reservation for a Thursday night in the private room as soon as reservations opened up. We did the kaiseki-tempura dinner. Tempura was so light. Come hungry, it’s a lot of food!

This is an excellent restaurant serving the best Tempura along with delicious Kaiseki courses. Delicious, elegant and refined but not pretentious. Perfect balances and an impressive eye for detail. The restaurant is located in a traditional Japanese house close to Esaka Station, about 20 minutes cab ride from the main tourist areas. Mr Tsuchisaka is a masterful chef, using seasonal ingredients. He started running his own restaurant when he was 37 (in 2008) and has held 2 Michelin stars since 2012.

Went in autumn 2017. It is honestly a game changer when it comes to tempura. I much prefer sushi and could not understand how good tempura is until i tried it. The lunch menu is really a steal for the quality of food. Each piece of tempura is exquisite. And the lunch set comes with the usual - appetizers, sashimi, rice, cooked dishes and dessert. Worth a visit if you are in Osaka.

I'm only half way through the course but already this place deserves a 5 star review. Best tempura I've ever had!

Yelp
Where have I been all my life to have never had tempura omakase? I don't think I can go back to the whatever tempura you get at the typical Japanese restaurant in the US. Goo tempura is an art and takes a lot of skill. I made a reservation for Shunsaiten Tsuchiya on myconciergejapan.com which was pretty easy. We have two people with dietary restrictions and it went smoothly. They seated us in a semi-private room. There is also counter seating where you can see live cooking. There were so many courses and all of them were great. It's really hard to pick a favorite. The crab was amazing in ways I did not expect. Ayu is in season and that was delicious in a different way from what we had at Kitcho. The vibrant colors of the seasonal vegetables was very pleasing to the eye. I enjoyed the course with 6 different items served with 3 different salts. That's 18 different combinations of flavors! Amazing. For the finisher, you can choose from rice or ochazuke. If you choose rice, it comes with miso soup. Service was impeccable and the usual gentle Japanese hospitality.

Yelp
When in Japan, I always made a point to try one restaurant that specializes in tempura. I picked Shunsaiten Tsuchiya, a 2* tempura joint this time and was very pleased with my choice. The restaurant is about an hour trek from Osaka city center in Suita. After arriving at Esaka station, it's about 15 minutes walk to the restaurant. The restaurant is located within a residential area which you won't expect to find a restaurant in the midst of all the Japanese houses, let alone a 2* one. Upon arrival, the rest of the guests were already seated and chef Yukihiko Tsuchisaka was ready to serve everyone. We were the only foreigners and the last to arrive albeit we were right on time for our noon time lunch reservation. When you make the reservation, you will be asked to select your choice of set lunch course. I went with the ¥22,680 (included seating charge and tax) "Tempura Only Course" as I wanted a full tempura experience instead of a half kaiseki half tempura course, after all, that's what I was there for. At first I was having doubts of my decision after seeing my neighbors being served some very nice and elegant "Hassun" (multiple small dishes) as well as everyone ordered the half kaiseki half tempura course meal except us but we were the ones that received all the envious looks from other guests as the meal progressed. The "Tempura Only Course" consists of: -Appetizer -Tempura -"Tencha" (tempura served over tea and rice) or "Tendon" (tempura served over a bowl of rice) -Dessert Number of tempura courses and ingredients varies depending on the season. This was one meal to remember as we were served with top notch ingredients. A few highlights: -Lobster tempuras -Crab tempura topped with caviars -A5 wagyu tempuras Do I recommend this restaurant? You bet I do! get out of the city center and travel somewhere away from the tourist area for an authentic meal, it's all worth it!

Yelp
wow lunch was a steal! great tempura, the pieces are small but you get to try a variety of things :) the restaurant is in the middle of the residential area but the place itself is very nice , nice ambient and i love the counter seats. one of the best tempura places in osaka
