Well I'm still on a Szechuan kick, so I'm stopping in for lunch here. The restaurant is located at 435G Hartford Tpke (Rte. 30) in Vernon, CT. The music is authentic here. The food is as well! They can do regular Chinese or the good stuff - Sichuan! To start it out, I'm having the Thai tea. Thai tea, also known as cha yen (iced tea), is a spiced, vibrant orange-red iced black tea drink that's a staple of Thai culture. It's commonly served with street food, at restaurants, and in homes, and can be enjoyed hot or cold. The tea is made with strong black tea, spices like cardamom and star anise, sweetened condensed milk, and crushed ice. The result is a sweet, smooth, and creamy beverage with earthy and nutty notes, and a slightly floral flavor. Oh yeah! This is good! For my first food item, I'm having a Vegetable Spring Roll. Spring rolls are a type of appetizer or dim sum dish, commonly found in Chinese, Vietnamese, and Southeast Asian cuisines. They consist of a savory filling wrapped in a thin pastry sheet or rice paper. The filling can vary, but often includes vegetables, meat (like pork or shrimp), and noodles. Spring rolls can be fried or served fresh, depending on the style. Well, their version is fried, but it what it is. They are note like egg rolls. I like the serving dish with the duck sauce area. They are quite good regardless. Next up, I'm having the Chili Pepper and Preserved Egg. Century eggs, also known as alkalized or preserved eggs, are a Chinese dish made by preserving duck, chicken, or quail eggs in a mixture of clay, ash, salt, quicklime, and rice hulls for several weeks to several months, depending on the processing method. This is a cold dish. I like the parsley finish on top. These eggs are really good! These are unique to this cuisine. By the way, the eggs are not spicy but the sauce is. This is REAL spicy so beware. Warning: this is coming from a hot sauce connoisseur. Next up, I'm having their hot and sour soup. If I remember correctly, I really liked it the last time I was here. Hot and sour soup is a popular Chinese soup known for its spicy and tangy flavor profile. It typically includes a combination of ingredients like mushrooms, tofu, bamboo shoots, and sometimes pork or chicken, all simmered in a flavorful broth. The soup is thickened with a cornstarch slurry and seasoned with white pepper, vinegar, and soy sauce, creating a complex and satisfying taste. I recommend a little pepper on top. This has a nice scallion garnish. It's nice and hot and was served quickly. I do see wood ear mushrooms on this. Very nice! It's not very spicy so don't panic. Their recipe is not quick as thick as I've had before but I still like it! For my entree, I'm having the "Chef's Special" Hot Spicy Bowl (chicken). I like the use of parsley on top. It's a nice touch. It nice and hot. It comes with a small bowl of rice which I use to dip my chicken in. LOTS of chili oil in this dish! I love the taste of this dish! It might be the Szechuan peppercorns that give it such a unique flavor. It's not very spicy but it will leave a "tingle" in your mouth. Trust me, that Century Egg sauce was FAR hotter. What a great meal here!
