The 16 Best Restaurants in Berkeley

"In the East Bay, Sichuan Style sets the standard for classic, tongue-numbingly spicy Sichuan fare. Standard orders include the fragrant, chile-topped fish fillet soup; the wok-charred cabbage; and the water-boiled fish, which comes swimming in a pool of spicy bright red sauce. Whatever you do, make sure you order one of the big, puffy rounds of sesame bread and plenty of white rice." - Dianne de Guzman, Eater Staff

The Best Chinese Restaurants in the East Bay | Eater SF

"With a staff and kitchen crew largely made up of defectors from China Village down the street (with a very similar menu), Sichuan Style has arguably surpassed its more well-known neighbor when it comes to classic, tongue-numbingly spicy Sichuan fare like water-boiled fish. Standard orders include the fragrant fish fillet soup, surprisingly mild and soothing despite arriving at the table topped with dozens of chili peppers; the wok-charred cabbage; and the big, puffy round of sesame bread." - Dianne de Guzman

Like most Chinese restaurants Sichuan style has a very large menu. The restaurant has lots of seating and is rarely full, which is nice. Most of what I’ve had here has been excellent, but I was not as big a fan of the fried rice. It was heavier with stronger flavors than I typically like. The staff was very fast and helpful, and the portions were huge. And they give kimchi!

This is THE classic Szechune restaurant in Bay Area. It is convenient, spacious, and with nice decor. The food is authentic with milder taste. As a Cantonese the real SZ cooking is overwhelming. This milder version is just right. We had A3 appetiser, H5 boiled fish, and J3 stirred pork. It came to somewhat >$80 for two. The portion is large. The left-over is good for another 3 meals. Very delicious!

Google
I recommend and have been 3 times. Green beans are perfect, potsticker wrappers are homemade, scallion pancakes are fried, and fried rice has excellent flavor and lean bits of pork. We usually get sweet and sour chicken but have also had kung pao chicken. Everything is great and I even eat the leftovers which are delicioso. 😗

Most food we ordered tastes good, the shredded chicken looks and tastes very strange in a bad way. The packaging was a mess, the sauces spilled everywhere.

Google
My favorite Chinese restaurant in the Berkeley area! Sichuan Style really does a great job with everything they serve. The Shui Zhu Yu 水煮鱼 is fantastic and has the perfect numbing spicy flavor you look for in that sort of dish. We have also really enjoyed the Yu Xiang eggplant, Chong Qing chicken, and so many other dishes. The more western style dishes like General Tso's Chicken are also awesome and are super flavorful/crispy... much better than other restaurants I've tried. Honestly, I have been so impressed by every dish here and would encourage anyone looking for good Chinese food to come try Sichuan Style. The service is super friendly and quick, and the restaurant is clean and nice to sit in. We love Sichuan Style and will definitely keep coming back as long as we live in the area.

Google
Food: Very authentic Chinese food! As a Taiwanese, this is 100% recommended if you’re around and Loki g for a nice place with good price to have a feast! Service: very kind and warm welcome and service. They also help you pack your takeout boxes nicely. Ambience: suitable for family and friends dining experience. Quite cozy and pretty clean.

Third visit: Worst beijing duck ever eat in my life. ⭐⭐ Second visit: The Sichuan cuisine at this restaurant is quite authentic. The taste of the saliva chicken is especially good, with a moderate level of spiciness. The fish is tender and flavorful. However, the stir-fried double liver dish is very mediocre, even unpleasant. The flavor is too sour, as if too much vinegar was added. Furthermore, the meat was not well-prepared, and despite adding a lot of seasoning, it still had a slightly unpleasant texture and taste. This is my second time dining here, and the first time was okay, without any disappointments. I brought a new friend (a professional food blogger) this time to try it out, and we were slightly disappointed. 3 star this time. ⭐⭐⭐ First visit: The portion of beef tripe in the boiled beef tripe dish is relatively small. The seasoning of the chicken is sufficient and the dishes are very authentic style. Overall the price is reasonable. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Google
My friend and I will come where often when visiting from out of town. It's a good restaurant, a true authentic feel, more than other Chinese restaurants. I definitely need my friend (from China) to order for me, otherwise I would be confused about what to get. There is that herb which causes your tongue to feel tingly — not my favorite but sometimes that really speaks to the origin of the cuisine.

Yelp
I was looking for some spicy food to spice up my soul and Sichuan Style Restaurant's dishes definitely did that. We were feeling lazy and decided to order to-go. We got the BBQ Pork, Chongqing Chicken and the Dry Sautéed Beef. The bbq was perfectly cooked, flavorful and had just the right sweetness to it. The chongqing chicken was soo spicy but I totally enjoyed it! My only issue was there was so much more chilis than chicken so it was hard sifting through to get some chicken. The chicken was crispy and seasoned well, the chilis added such a nice kick to it. The dry sautéed beef was also very spicy but it was more of a slow burn. Again, flavors were on point and the dish was seasoned well. This dish didn't have as many chilis as the chicken dish but it was still fairly spicy, which I thoroughly enjoyed! It was packed with flavor, you could definitely taste the cumin and it really made the dish pop. Portions were really great, more than enough for two people. The dishes tasted very good even the day after! We will definitely be back to try their other dishes.

Yelp
I love this place. Super authentic dishes packed full of flavors! Great efficient service. Favorites : Ma po Tofu- 5 stars , the numbing peppercorns gives ultra awesome taste Double skin plate - 5 stars , refreshing with rainbow of vegetables Chicken wings - 4 stars , tasty Chicken with chili peppers- 4 stars , great flavors with chicken cubes but a little dry String beans- 5 stars, cooked perfectly

Yelp
Quite authentic Sichuan food for the Bay Area! We got a stir fry beef dish, the Beef Noodle Soup and spicy tofu with fish. If you don't love the Sichuan peppercorn, this place is not for you since the food definitely has some heat! The restaurant is spacious and is pretty comfortable. I liked the tea that they served us. And service was quite and friendly!

Yelp
I'm always on the hunt for authentic Sichuanese food, so Sichuan Style was the next on my list in the Berkeley area. My bf and I came on a weekday for an early dinner and there was no wait. The server was nice and accommodating. I absolutely love spicy food, and this place did not disappoint. Usually, I order the spicy fish filet as a baseline dish to try, and then add some other meat dishes that I'm craving. + Spicy Szechuan Water Boiled Fish: delicious - piping hot with tons of garlic/chilies/green onions on top. I'm salivating just thinking about it, to be honest. Great portion size, and quite authentic in terms of spice levels/numbing/etc. $17.95 + Hunan Stir-Fried Beef: Beef was a tad chewy in some pieces, but for the most part it was delicious and tenderized. Super spicy as well with the green chilies and also came piping hot. $18.95 +Twice cooked bacon cut pork: Classic dish, also very authentic with the sliced green onions, bean curd, and fatty pork. Delicious. $14.95 Rice per bowl $2: We ordered two bowls but as you can see in the photos she just consolidated it and gave us a whole rice bowl. You need tons of rice for these dishes, I definitely ate way too much. I haven't been this impressed by a new restaurant in a while, so I was very excited to get three authentically spicy Sichuan dishes. I had a great meal, and I will definitely be back. I will say that the food is probably much better dine-in because of the nature of the dishes. However, I had leftovers the next day for lunch, and it was still delicious. The prices are also really reasonable for the area as well.

Yelp
Pretty authentic chinese food with reasonable prices. We ordered bbq pork fried rice (i loved it!), fish and tofu combo, and pork belly stir fry. I wish the fish dish was a bit more spicy but it was still delicious nonetheless. The pork dish did not have that many slices and I felt like the pork slices was on the dry-er side but i still really enjoyed it, loved the leek in the dish as well. Service was very friendly and great with recommendations.

Yelp
Hubby and I were craving some Chinese food and something spicy. Tried this restaurant for the 1st time. Food was delicious but it was not as spicy as we were expecting it to be. The lotus root was my favorite. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. Overall our experience was good. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
What's really nice about the place is that it's open pretty late and offers a full menu. I often times will forget to eat in the summer because I usually associate dinner with nightfall so having this place open until 9:30pm is perfect. It was only me, so I had the pickled long bean with pork. It's a little salty on its own but with rice it's great. I cannot testify on its authenticity but I will say it was tasty and the wait was minimal once I ordered. The portions are family style so I had enough for another couple of meals. They also serve spicy pickled cabbage to start. Enjoy!

Yelp
Great taste of food. A lot of selections, my favorite dish is xinjiang braised Chicken. Every I go I tried to find the same taste but I can't. If you like spicy food you won't be disappointed.

Abdo A.

Yelp
It was apparent that the chef is passionate about the food they cook as it was very delicious, it's the next day and I'm still thinking about the veggie fried rice I ate. The portions were big and they had friendly service. There were some really cool paintings and the ambience was really nice.

Yelp
this restaurant owner is so greedy all the main dishes doesn't even come with the rice and so rude. I ordered through DoorDash a few times always missing my items and when I called and I say something, they said just come pick it up. I live in Oakland I ordered from Berkeley would never recommend this place and wouldn't ever come back in order again. I ordered two Main dish not even come with rice or utensils nothing.

Yelp
My husband, daughter, and I sat down to eat here last weekend and everything was delicious. We ordered the green onion pancakes, Szechuan sausage, pork belly, sesame chicken, and tan tan noodles. Everything had the right amount of spice and flavor, and the portions were more than enough for us. We came at a time when they weren't very busy so service was attentive. The restaurant was very clean and soft musics played in the background. Overall I enjoyed my time here and would definitely come back.

Yelp
What a greasy spoon this place is!!! There was enough oil in each of the dishes ordered to make French fries!!! I don't understand why the excess of oil to make what I consider some easy food. It is all the more reason for me to continue to learn to make the dishes I enjoy so that I don't have to contend with so MUCH OIL!!!! It's ridiculous and a waste the amount that was in the three dishes ordered. I will not order from here again.
google avatar

Yelp
Always my favorite for Chinese, can't go wrong with the flavor and portion sizes for the price. Mapo Tofu has just the right amount of numbing spicy.

Yelp
Authentic sichuan food with very reasonable price! Great value considering the portion, the price and the taste. For three of us, we only finished half of what we ordered (three dishes) and had plenty to take home for another meal. Also, the spice level was very manageable, enough to give you the kick but not too much to make you regret having it next day. The menu selection was extensive and can be a little overwhelming if you don't know sichuan food well. We came for an early weekend lunch and the restaurant was pretty slow. The indoor was quite spacious and the staff were friendly.

Yelp
Good food and great service. We ordered the spicy lamb, Mongolian beef and chicken chow mein. We will most certainly go back.

Yelp
Definitely will recommend this place to my friends and family. They served really authentic Chinese, Sichuan food. We ordered a fish soup, which is really good, it looks spicy with all the chili peppers, but it is not spicy at all. My husband who doesn't eat Chinese spicy was able to finish all of it by himself. Service is really good. They are really patient and friendly. I love the atmosphere in this restaurant since it's not as crowded as those famous Chinese restaurant in Berkeley, I feel I can really enjoy the food and take my time here.

Yelp
If you're looking for real Chinese food in Oakland this is the spot to go to! Everything we got was delicious! Def would come back to this restaurant!
google avatar

Yelp
Just my all around favorite spot for Sichuan in the Bay Area. The beef tendon appetizer is my absolute favorite, and we always get the dry cooked green beans. The main dish always changes, but it's always guaranteed to be numbing and wonderful! Love the space and the staff. Pro tip: head next door to XO and get yourself some dessert for the way home!

Yunfei W.

Yelp
Food is good. You can choose spicy food or not spicy one. The fried rice is awesome worth to have one to share with friends. The service is good. They recommend some delicious dishes. You can ask for it if you have no idea in a Chinese restaurant.

Erin R.

Yelp
Picked it up to go, 5 minutes from home. Inedible, and I don't say this lightly. The Mapo tofu was so salty we had to throw it out. The General Tso's chicken was very soggy, the coating was either undercooked or possibly because it was placed on top of steamed broccoli. Both the onion pancake and potstickers were extraordinarily tough and chewy, which I have never experienced in 60 years of eating Chinese food. The brown rice was good, though.

Yelp
One of our favorite restaurants around Berkeley. Very tasty. We like Spicy Szechuan soft tofu, most appetizers and seafoods. Plus big dish and good price! Even more clean and spacey with nice decorations. We love it.

Sunny Z.

Yelp
Pretty delicious!!! Love the staff and the service! The environment is clean and nice!!

Yelp
Food was 10/10, every single bite was amazing. Service was exceptional and very attentive. Highly recommend the sesame chicken, wontons in chilli oil, chow mein, bok choy in garlic, and hot & sour soup. We definitely dived into the experience and it was well worth it. Thank you!
google avatar

Marc K.

Yelp
Good spice without losing flavor. Large variety of choices even for those who don't like spicy food. The braised pork is a tender non-spicy balance to pair with a hotter dish, but also great on its own. So glad to have found a replacement for the Sichuan restaurant that closed in El Cerrito and they even have Sichuan style kimchee. Good size space, but beware of sitting downstream from the main door as the wind can get pretty chilly. Especially if spicy food causes you to sweat. Nice friendly staff.

Yelp
Went there for lunch great service and food was delicious. Quite an interesting variety of different dishes on the menu.

Yelp
Signs of good authentic Chinese food... unparalleled flavor, a lot of customers are speaking Mandarin. Superior Service.

Bob R.

Yelp
First time I came here for lunch it was good. This time, at dinner, we ordered sesame chicken, walnut prawns, fried rice and green beans. (the green beans were due to the upsell of the waitress - but they were good) Everything arrived immediately after we ordered. Could this have been fresh cooked? Tasted like leftovers. chicken and prawns were tough. disappointing.

Gerhard H.

Yelp
Excellent dishes, in particular the signature spicy fish special and duck king fu special. Good wine recommendation. But problems with the service: Appetizers and main courses arrived at the same time, restrooms were closed for cleaning before official closing time and before guests were finished eating.
google avatar

Amanda W.

Yelp
The absolute best! Food is always hot and fresh. Crispy dishes stay crispy bc they separate the sauce for takeout--so smart. Dry fried green beans are amazing and massive quantity. Prices are high but the quality and quantity are super high so the value is unmatched. Owners and staff are also great. Love coming here and will continue coming back
google avatar

Yelp
The chopsticks are disgusting!!!!!! The young female waitress's face is very grumpy! Looks like she doesn't like to work here but had too because of whatever reason in her life?? When you walk in a restaurant, the main thing you look at is the waiter or waitress's face and attitude. Sometimes even the food are not great but the waitress or waiter's skill would save the day. But they don't understand how it works I guess or they just don't give a shitz.
google avatar

Grace Y.

Yelp
This is my favorite Sichuan restaurant in Bay Area for sure. I used to go to school in Chengdu so I know their food is very authentic. My husband liked the Mongolian beef a lot and the appetizer pickles. Staff were friendly and helpful. Love it! :)
google avatar

Lyn Y.

Yelp
I've had the pleasure of finding this place relatively recently and it has quickly become one of my favorite places for both dine in and take out. Easily 90% of the dishes I've ordered have been fantastic, and the other 10% have been solidly good. The atmosphere is better than the average Chinese restaurant and it's been easy enough to get a table that I selfishly hope that continues. I look forward to eating my way through their menu. The chef really knows his stuff!

Yelp
Located in a nice area in Albany. My group and I found the food, portion size, and price to be very great for a nice restaurant. We all loved the food and especially the Spicy Sichuan Tofu W/Fish. -Home Style Five Spice Braised Pork Shoulder 5/5. Texture, taste, and presentation was beautiful and is super juicy and saucy. -Cumin Lamb 4.5/5. Chewy, not gamey taste at all, and ample flavor. -Twice Cooked Bacon Cut Pork 4/5. It was good, thin cut pork that was nice, albeit a bit greasy but that is the style of the dish and have no complaints. -Spicy Szechuan Tofu W/Fish 6/5. Yes I say 6/5 because it was just that darn good haha. Soft, and extremely delicious and everyone in the group scarfed it down instantly. -Chow Mein w/Beef 4.5/5. It was really tasty and I would get it again. Only gripe is that it's smaller portion for the price we paid for, but the taste was one of the best beef chow mein's I've had. Overall, for 5 dishes and after tax and tip, it came down to roughly $33/person and that is a fair price for good food that was generous portions and decent service. Not expensive at all for what we had. I'd recommend this place if you want good, well priced, Sichuan food in the area!

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time as in the area and Yelp review , upon checking in on Yelp there was a lunch combo coupon available for check ins although when showed to the waiter before placing order I was advised they do not accept Yelp coupon. I preceded with placing my order wanting to give this place a try but it fell flat , old shredded lettuce on plate , mushy egg roll filling, not the flavor I was used to or expecting it was a miss for me . I also felt ignored, no check in as other tables around me received , maybe it was just a busy day .

Yelp
Some of the best Sichuan food in the bay! My mom whos from Sichuan approves and deems this place to be authentic. Ordered a ton of food (probably about 8 dishes) and each and every dish was unbelievably tasty. This place is big on bold, spicy flavors with a variety of spice blends. Every bite is addicting to eat especially with some rice! I only took a picture of two dishes but unfortunately do not know the names as I didn't order them. Another plus is that the service is great! Such attentive staff that give good recommendations. They helped us pack our food to go which is much appreciated. Will definitely be back if I'm in the area. Give this place a try and you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I ordered the dan dan noodles, and I was extremely happy with my choice. They tasted great, and were the perfect comfort food for the cooler weather when I ate them.

Yelp
Good as always :) The dishes come out surprisingly quickly out. I really enjoy their fry/dry cooked dishes more but the soups aren't bad either (on the tad spicer side).

Yelp
Authentic flavors. Excellent and courteous service. Generous portions. Spacious and not cramped in restaurant dining. .

Yelp
Five stars because 10 wasn't available. Un Believably fantastic meal for 6. Authentic Sechuan spicy meal where every dish (and there were many) was better than the last. Fresh, fast, quality, and affordable, when considering the quality. Do yourself a favor wtry this place! It's a complete "wow".

Yelp
Delicious authentic fresh ingredients absolutely one of the best meals I've ever had!!! Service was very accommodating for a special dietary considerations and I have to say for a Saturday afternoon it was seriously popping off in there I've been getting my haircut next to this place for 20 plus years and this is my first time in there in my only regret is not having come sooner!! Highly highly recommended

Lna A.

Yelp
Soo many reviews yet it's not worth it.. I ordered l: 1. Cabbage stir fry: very delicious 2. Mapo Tofu: looks good but the sauce was soo bad..It left such a bad aftertaste..It's almost 'inedible'..Very bad.. 3. The sesame bread: it's just a slightly sweet bread w/ almost no flavor in it..The bread was not fully baked inside..

Yelp
Ordered take out! Look what's in my food! They gave me some extra protein I didn't even ask for!!! What an amazing restaurant!!! If you want to try some flies, Sichuan style is definitely your go to place!!! I didn't see until I ate a few pieces. I got stomachaches and diarrhea for a couple days. If you also want a tour of the hospital, Sichuan style is a MUST GO!!!
google avatar

Ben G.

Yelp
不是正宗的四川菜 . Not authentic at all. My wife is chengdu born and raised, we eat Sichuan food all the time. This place is not good, if you're looking for authentic Sichuan food. Maybe good if you're looking for American Chinese though, so take my review with a grain of salt. For example, the boiled fish dish didn't have a whole fish (was like frozen fish chunks) and the sauce seemed like a bottled goop, not actually made the right way.
google avatar

Jenny O.

Yelp
Writing this review after having a delicious lunch and getting ready to eat the rest of my leftovers only to find that my rice was not packed and half the soup broth was thrown out. I paid $40 for lunch. I want all my food so I can eat it as leftover. Now I only have half the food I paid for, which is not cool. I was really excited to return, but not if I'm not getting what I paid for.

Sid G.

Yelp
The mapo tofu, lamb dishes, and fish dishes are amazing! Service was friendly, and the restaurant is nice and comfortable.

Yelp
I only ordered the Chongqing Chili Pepper Chicken to-go and it was sooooooo hot and spicy. My eyes are watering even thinking about it. The unbelievable spiciness seemed to cancel out any of the flavor. Seriously, the box was nearly 1/4 filled with inedible red chili's. After the first bite, my entire mouth started to burn, and no, it wasn't the sinus-cleaning heat. I ate about 1/3 of the box and then waved the white flag. I didn't have any feeling in my mouth for a while. I then removed the chili peppers and saved the chicken for later (it was just chili peppers and small chicken pieces). After eating a few bites as a snack the next day, I realized the spice hadn't calmed down, and I quit. The Chongqing Chili Pepper Chicken had finally won a complete victory! My friends did enjoy their non-chili pepper orders, like: beef and broccoli, potstickers, soup, etc.

David A.

Yelp
I am from Sichuan and I think the food here is delicious! I normally come here a few times each month! Service here is good and people here are also friendly.

Yelp
We've been coming here for nearly 3 years and the food is always consistently good and very reasonably priced. Definitely recommend the Lychee Flavor Sizzling Rice, everything else is also extremely solid!
