The Gooey, Cheesy History of the Kentucky Hot Brown | Eater

"One playful adaptation turns the hot brown into a pizza, layering the concept over a crust and using a cheddar cheese sauce in place of the traditional Mornay." - Georgia Kral

Park first, then enjoy the good. There is a parking deck literally across the street, as well as a few parking meters on that stretch of 4th St. Once inside, the decor is upbeat. Walk up to the counter, look up at their extensive menu, and place your order. Dine in or take out. The food was very tasty. One thing we tried was an order of "Little Sicilies". They were good but the accompanying sauce was a unique flavor we didn't care for. The pizza was hot and cheesy, just like pizza should be. We could tell by the browned bottom of the crust that it was cooked in a real pizza oven too 👍. Give it a try. We should come back to sample even more of the menu items.

I ordered the Hot Brown Sandwich. Probably one of the better hot sandwiches I've had. Roasted turkey, bacon, tomato and cheese. 8 out of 10. I also got the Philly Cheese steak pizza by accident. A got one but what he had was a chicken bacon ranch which was 10/10. The Philly was about only a 6/10. It needs a drizzle of garlic butter when out the oven. But all it all it was good. I do wanna try the fried chicken pizza.

Google
On a road trip and wanted some quick pizza. It was actually pretty good (we are from Long Island,NY) so I tend to be a pizza snob. The service was quick the pizza was hot and cheesy. We also got the chicken Alfredo pasta and that was pretty good as well. For pizza in Kentucky this was pretty good 😊

Google
I ordered a hand tossed BYO 14" pepperoni and bacon pizza for pickup and it was just being boxed up as I arrived. The lady at the counter was friendly and supplied plates, forks, napkins, and pizza toppings. My order was fresh, piping hot, and delicious 😋. This was my first time trying this place but it won't be my last

Google
The most delicious chicken Alfredo cheese pizza I’ve ever had 🙀🤎. It’s a great size for the price.

Ricki I.

Google
Best pizza I’ve ever had! I will always try and stop here whenever I’m in town.

Eclectic H.

Google
Dough not done. Vegetables uncooked on pizza. Pizza is overpriced for what you get. Chef salad does not include egg.

Liam A.

Google
Whatever you do, DO NOT ORDER chicken wings or the salads here. Awful Awful chicken wings, whats the opposite of fresh ? Old and smelly chicken wings , same applies to the salad. Cant believe I just spent 40 bucks on frozen food and an old salad.

Yelp
This is my go to for lunch because they always have great deals and I usually grab a slice of pizza but this time I decided to try the baked pasta! The chicken fettuccine Alfredo pasta was delicious! I definitely underestimated how good it would be and I'm happy I did. It's a huge portion and comes with a bread stick for $11! Can't beat that for lunch. Service is usually pretty quick if you order ahead and they also have delivery, which is what we did since it's colder outside. But on a summer day, I don't mind the walk. If you go here on a packed day, you can usually grab a table, it's pretty spacious but I've never actually dined in.

Yelp
Yes, lets ask for a tip before service...... because service is non existent once the pizza hits the table. If you like your pizza half baked and the slimey dough dripping out of the middle, this is your go to place. Dough is probably pretty good if it's actually cooked. Toppings were fair. But certainly not a value compared to the price.

Yelp
Ordered on Door Dash and received in about thirty minutes. Great crust especially when you order the thin crust. Loved the make your own option. We made a margarita pizza and enjoyed the standard meat lovers. Great garlic Parmesan wings.
google avatar

Justin A.

Yelp
Had a great experience ordering from Sicilian. Delicious pizza and wings plus the delivery what quick.
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
I was looking for a specific type of crust and Sicilian pizza seemed to fit the bill. It only took a few more minutes than predicted, however the flavors were a smidge lackluster and way too greasy. Our stomachs were pretty upset the next day. I wish we would've just done a frozen pizza.

Yelp
This place never disappoints. The food is excellent, service is nice and friendly, there are loads of food options, and the restrooms are clean. Quick service, clean dining area, and nice ambiance. Situated conveniently down Theatre Square between Broadway and Chestnut streets. The Sicilian knots were scrumptious today. I got mine loaded with spinach, mushrooms, pineapple. Halt your judgement; pineapple tops things off deliciously. I hadn't been here in a while and had almost forgotten how tasty and high quality the food is here.

Chase D.

Yelp
server laughed at us for getting a CHEESE PIZZA, took 35 min to get two pizzas to go, ordered one cheese one Sicilian and they gave us two cheese that I kid you not were fully unsliced like not a slice on it. possibly the worst pizza place I've been.

Karen P.

Yelp
Bardstown Rd location: We REALLY didn't want to do this as this place is so close and convenient but, after giving them a second try after a number of years, we felt like we needed to get someone's attention. We ordered two calzones (spinach plus a couple of added items - around $20 EACH!) and another item for pickup. The two calzones were overcooked and came complete with an awful, burned smell. Mostly inedible. One was much worse than the other and pictures are attached. When we called the store to let them know, we were told the manager would call us later because they were "slammed". Gave my number to the unfriendly call taker but no return call ever came. Food like this should NOT leave the kitchen! That's a LOT of money to pay for a food item that is burned! We LOVE to support local but we'll pass on this one next time.

Yelp
You know im a true blue buffalo pizza eater, BUT I always try what Yelp states this cities best pizza. Well, here in downtown Lousville, this was it. Sicilian Pizza and Pasta. We are not in Buffalo anymore, but this was decent. I do love a good crispy, thin crust pizza. The flavor was good. Got a sub, too (just in case for backup), went to the meatball, and it was good. The pizza was good, if this is their best..
google avatar

Tony T.

Yelp
It wasn't busy when I went in, and I ordered the Sicilian calzone. I ordered the small, and I couldn't finish it. It was baked to perfection with a very tasty seasoning on top. I ordered an extra sauce, because well, sauce is important to me! The service was polite. There's places to sit down, but I chose to take it to go back to my hotel.
google avatar

Yelp
I have loved this establishment ever since I discovered it 10 years ago. The taste and consistency of the pizza is always great. I especially love the garlic butter blend they have on the crust. The service is always very good. We used to order and sit outside in the front. Now I mostly order to go. You can't go wrong with this pizza place.
google avatar

Yelp
Small business on 4th Street that has fantastic pizza and stays open late. Staff was friendly every time we visited. If you're in the Louisville area and want some pizza you should give them a try.
google avatar

Daryl W.

Yelp
The food I received was great. One of the very best gluten-free pizza that I have had anywhere. Additionally, delivery to the hospital was very convenient. Great food and service.
google avatar

Heather M.

Yelp
I will say this place is definitely underrated and doesn't get nearly the recognition it should. I definitely have it as my top Pizza/Italian place in Louisville. Located next to the Mercury Ballroom in Downtown Louisville. Both visits I got the Calzone and the best calzone if you ask me, my friend got the Lasagna first visit and finally got the calzone the 2nd visit. I love to load mine with extra cheese along with my meats. Their mozzarella cheese is fire. I have yet to try any pasta from here, I have had the pizza but that was from pre pandemic days. This is definitely a must if you're visiting/staying/ or local and you come to Downtown Louisville for an event or whatsoever. They do have salads/wings etc if you're not up for Pizza or Pasta.
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
Staying in a nearby hotel, stopped in for a quick bite to eat. I enjoyed the meatball sub and decided to come back for the pizza. Both experiences were great, was able to get food quick and it was hot and tasty. Definitely a place to stop into if you want a quick meal
google avatar

Sheila G.

Yelp
Typically I won't review a place before I have gotten food. This is the exception. Still sitting here 1 hour after we ordered our pizza and 20 min after we asked about it. They apologized but the fact that many other orders are coming out and we are waiting is unacceptable. I get that things happen but no attempt to make it right leads me to believe they don't care. Don't come here. You will wait a long time for what (as I was told by someone who actually came in AFTER us and FINISHED their pizza) is so-so.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
The ultimate hand tossed pizza was very good. There were tons of toppings on the pizza. The 12 inch must have weighed 3 pounds. Really enjoyed it.
google avatar

Yelp
An okay spot for pizza in downtown Louisville. The place itself is pretty, and it has a relaxed sort of atmosphere. Not too, too many people dining in. We ordered on the touchscreen in the store and just waited for the food (average wait time). I tried their cheese calzone (CYO own the addition of feta) in a medium size. The medium was enough for me, but it wasn't huge though. The place has a nice ratio of cheese to breading. They did load it up with cheese like I had hoped. However, there was a slightly strange aftertaste to the calzone. Maybe it came from the feta. It was also quite greasy. They served it with a huge packet of ranch, which is store-bought. Wasn't a big fan of the ranch. All in all, a fine spot for pizza. Nothing special, but it did the job. Calzones are okay for the average price.

Yelp
Good food, decent prices. Love the cheese bread. Hot brown pizza was really good! Would recommend for a casual dinner or takeout option.

AliciYah L.

Yelp
they love to close 30 minutes earlier. maybe they should change the time it says online?
google avatar

Mark S.

Yelp
Was in town in order food for delivery. I got the supreme pizza. Wow! I wasn't expecting the pizza to be this damn good. It was one of the best pizzas I've had in years. Was delivered very quickly and still hot. Thank you.

C B.

Yelp
Always delicious. I get the cheesy bread sticks. The dough is slightly sweet and the mozzarella is quality.

Yelp
I received an advert in the mail today which I guess was a sign? I had a rough day and didn't feel like cooking so I ordered delivery from this location. Be warned it is Doordash if anyone has issue with that. They were almost 30 minutes earlier than stated which was nice! I ordered the small hot brown pizza which was amazing. And a ceasar salad. Their prices are not bad with a small and salad enough to feed two people. They got my drink wrong but I'm more involved in how quick and good the food was. This is definitely a place that has a new customer!

Noel L.

Yelp
So, first things first, the food is horrible. You order pasta and get something that is not pasta and that tastes just bad. Pasta was not even cooked properly. Second, you pay a good amount for the food and service, and what do you receive in turn? Your food is served to you on a plastic plate with a plastic fork, not even napkins. Last but not least, the place smells bad as soon as you step foot in, even though they leave the door open. Overall, I would recommend to stay away from this place. Im not going there again!
google avatar

Matt W.

Yelp
This place had very tasty pizza available at an astounding speed. Even facing large lunch rushes, we only had to wait about 15 minutes for our food. Pizza was very flavorful, and the cinnamon sticks were to die for. I think I ended up eating here 3 or 4 times over the course of a weeks stay in Louisville, different groups kept wanting to go back, and I never had a problem with that!
google avatar

Kory G.

Yelp
Very good food and the staff was friendly!! Right in the middle of downtown the 10 inch pizza looks bigger than ten inches

Vince D.

Yelp
Visited Louisville with my grandkids and my wife. We decides to try Sicilian Pizza near the hotel on 4th. The grnadkids eat pizza and pasta for the most part. We ordered a large pizza, 2 pasta meals, a chesey bread, and wings. The food came fairly quickly one at a time. The cheesy bread was all chesse and undercooked. It was not very good although the grandkids ate some of it. The caesar salads with pasta meals were ok but not worth ordering. The pizza was bushy and undercooked and tasted very bad. The wings were ok but nt great seemed like they were cooked quickley. The pasta meals were all sauce and mozzarella, looked bad and the grandkid would not eat. This was an Italian restaurant that was all fast food at best, 2 stars are generous for the quality of the food, not good. Don't go!
google avatar

Paula L.

Yelp
Terrible service - they have NO space for people to sit and don't plan for seating - wish we would have known that before ordering our food!
google avatar

Spirited R.

Yelp
We were looking for an easy night after 6 hours of traveling, 2 distilleries and 2 wineries. We decided to order pizza and found that this placed looked good. We ordered pizza and salad for delivery. It was a little expensive, $26 and some change for a medium and small salad. It took a little over an hour as explained to us. The driver called me when he arrived at the hotel lobby. I met him and provided him a generous tip. The pizza was warm and very delicious. The $26 + tip was worth it.
google avatar

Valarie P.

Yelp
Excellent pizza! The crust has a slightly sweet flavor which we loved! Service was awesome and friendly! Calzone was amazing ! We eat pizza everywhere we go and this we highly recommend!
google avatar

Sally M.

Yelp
Sicilian is my go to lunch spot downtown! The baked spaghetti and meatballs never disappoints and it's a large portion so I get lunch and dinner for the reduced lunch price. I easily go here once a week sometimes more
google avatar

Cody B.

Yelp
This place is Downtown Louisville's pizza destination. Sicilian is one of those spots that always pleases. I drive from work, park on 4th then transport the savory pie across the river. Each time I call in my order over the phone. Occasionally I'm put on hold for a moment and prompted with a 15-20 minutes estimation. They're never wrong. Wait times do increase when the Palace or Mercury Ballroom have shows. So when you walk into the classic pizzeria parlor you may find actual celebrities grabbing a drink before they perform. Additional outside seating is available to enjoy your own local interactions and people-watch.

Tammy P.

Yelp
The pizza was the best thing ever . I went back still good. Good service good treatment. Looks like a awesome place to eat. Going back tomorrow
google avatar

Edward M.

Yelp
Fast service, food was hot cheese sticks was very delicious, plenty of tables to sit and enjoy your meal & TV
google avatar

Leah L.

Yelp
Great service....very quick also.... but the pizza was very greasy ... I'm sure it's "ok" after the bars close and you're starving....but for dinner, we were disappointed
google avatar

Amber D.

Yelp
OMG I spent the next day in my bathroom, greasy and uncooked. It look great but after the first bite I knew I was I trouble.
google avatar

Bryan S.

Yelp
Great pizza and fair prices. We got the 4th street bourbon pizza and the Sicilia. The lady at the service counter was very helpful in our choice. Both were delicious, but considerably different. The 4th street has a sweet bbq sauce whereas the Sicilian was more traditional. Worth a trip!
google avatar

Sam T.

Yelp
I am from NY where pizza is a religious experience & where there is no such thing as bad pizza- unless you are talking Dominos, Pizza Hutt or Pappa John's. I am visiting my sister & b-in-law in Louisville & we ordered a garlic & spinach from Sicilian. If the crust was a bit crispier it would have been one of the best pies I have ever had the pleasure of eating.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
I was at Cross Con 24. I went with a group for dinner. It was crowded because of the conference, but it had quick service. I had the Sicilian calzone, and it was really good!! It has limited seating but no more or less than other restaurants on broadway. The prices were good. I would go again.
google avatar

Tripp L.

Yelp
I've been here twice, it was pretty good (compliments to the cook) and we'll probably eat here again. But the service is different story, The older gentlemen who rang our order was pretty cool, but there was a woman who rang up our order the second time we went. It seemed like she couldn't be bothered by customers taking a little time to explore other items on the menu.
google avatar

Patrick B.

Yelp
Lady night in Louisville, hankering cheese, melted. Why not a meat lovers calzone? Sure! The wait was well worth it. Ooey, gooey cheesey! Yummy! Nice brew to go along with it, had a house salad for starters.

Deja L.

Yelp
We received a flyer in the mail and I thought we would support a new business. I think our order is a one and done. Our order was late, cold, wrong, and greasy. We ordered two medium pizzas, one buffalo chicken and one cheese pizza. The cheese pizza did not have any pizza sauce, basically cheese stick pizza which was so greasy and leaking through the box. The buffalo chicken pizza had very little sauce leaving the pizza very bland. When I called the restaurant and asked for a refund, I was told they could t refund my order because it was placed online. So overall, not a great experience and will not be ordering again from Sicilian Pizza. Plenty of other good pizza places in Louisville.

Angela R.

Yelp
the pizza was unexpectedly delicious. I had just artived to town and was hungry and needed something in walking distance. perfect choice and best pizza I've had in a while

Gina M.

Yelp
Meh. The food here was mediocre. They use pre cooked chicken and the dishes lack fkavor/seasoning. The service was quick.
google avatar

Carmen S.

Yelp
Working on 4th Street, my office always got pizza from Sicilian and it was tasty. Recently, my husband wanted pasta for his second Birthday meal, and we ordered Sicilian after work. Sorry we didn't take pictures, but we were very hungry by the time we got home with carry out. We got the Chicken Fettuccini Alfredo, the Lasagna, and the Chicken Parm dinners. They each came with a pretty substantial Side salad and a long breadstick. The Alfredo was creamy and delicious, the lasagna was saucy and meaty. The Chicken Parm was interesting. It was rigatoni with marinara sauce and strips of breaded chicken baked with cheese. I only wish it had more chicken on it. The flavor was on point. I also ordered a Sicilian salad for lunch the next day. It was full of ham, pepperoni and cheese. I ordered the House dressing which was a thick sweet Italian vinaigrette. So, if you are downtown and want some pizza or pasta, head to Sicilian's on 4th. They are open until 11:00 p.m.
google avatar

Katelynn H.

Yelp
Seriously some of the best pizza in Louisville. The crust is so good and flavorful. Always a bit greasy, but can blot off with a napkin. Just great comfort pizza
google avatar

Jeremy J.

Yelp
Good pizza joint that we like to visit. They have good prices for the taste of the pizza. I have visited it few times when we are down on 4th street for concerts and events. We will be back
google avatar

Josh B.

Yelp
** Warning NEVER order delivery** We waited almost 45 min past the original 45 min scheduled delivery time. All I was told after both inquiries was that the online ordering times for delivery was wrong. Why did they not call and tell us? It is now after 11pm and we are extremely hungry! Worst customer service I have experienced in a long time! This review is made before we have even tried the food! **Update - Our pizza was barely warm and the cheese sticks were cold! Sounds like we were forgotten!
google avatar

Rhonda P.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. Just happened to be downtown. Quick friendly service. Small dining room but definitely worth it.
