The owners of Bay Hill Tavern in Clairemont have converted a former money loan shop next door into an intimate bar, Side Piece. The operating hours were from 5 pm to midnight daily with happy hour between 5 and 7 pm. The inside had numerous flat-screen TVs for viewing sporting events, a pool table in one corner, and a dart board in another corner. Parking at the venue was limited to a few spaces out front and then several more in the back that were shared with BHT.
The bar food choices were limited to six appetizers... wings, pretzels, flatbread, chips & dip, skins, and fries. From this list, I picked the wings with salt & pepper seasoning (versus spicy). The seven pieces were served with carrots, celery, and ranch dressing. The size of the wings was average while the coating was fairly crispy.
On the evening of my visit, a deejay was setting up a karaoke station for future mic nights. This place has the potential to be a buzzy hang out spot as a complement to its adjacent larger brethren. For now, I rated my experience at Side Piece with three stars until the business has more time to develop.
