The Best Onion Burgers in Oklahoma City and El Reno | Eater

"A famous diner known for its thin, smash-style onion burgers loaded with onions that range from grilled to slightly burnt; burgers are typically dressed with mustard and pickles (unless requested otherwise) and come with crispy hand-cut fries, the assertive char on the patty balancing the sweet, buttery onions and tangy mustard." - Amy McCarthy

The 29 Best Diners in America | Eater

"Located just off the old Route 66 in El Reno, this red-awning diner is a showcase for the Oklahoma onion-burger tradition—thin-shaved onions smashed into the beef on the griddle—and is best enjoyed by ordering the cheeseburger with fried onions and a side of the crispy, double-fried fries. Friendly, classic diner service and a no-nonsense menu make it a must for visitors seeking regional burger history." - Eater Staff

The Best Onion Burgers in Oklahoma City and El Reno - Eater

"Sid’s Diner is arguably the most famous of the Oklahoma onion burger slingers in El Reno, thanks in part to appearances on shows like Man Vs. Food. As its name might indicate, Sid’s serves a full diner menu, complete with omelets and chicken fried steak for breakfast, but the real draw is the onion burger." - Amy McCarthy

This is an extremely small main building with limited seating. There is an extra building with more seating and it was cool during a hot summer day. They have a screen for placing orders but you have to go get your order from the main building yourself. No service in the extra building but not sure how it happens in the main building. The food was what you would expect when getting an onion burger. The onion rings were good and the fries were plenty to share.

Took my dad to Sid’s Diner for his birthday and we had a great time! They're known for their fried onion burgers, and they definitely lived up to the hype, everything we ordered was delicious. The atmosphere is classic and fun, though there is limited indoor seating, so be prepared for a bit of a wait during busy times. The staff was fantastic, and the owner even took a few minutes to chat with us on our way out. He was genuinely interested in why we were visiting, which made the whole experience feel even more special. Totally worth the 30-minute drive from the city, highly recommend giving it a try!

Came into Sid's Diner to have dinner, I was wowed the moment I entered and was greeted as though a member of my family was greeting me. The restaurant is extremely clean and spotless. The decor is amazing and the Diner felt so warm and comfy, it was such a pleasant atmosphere. This Diner reminded me of the Cheer's Pub where everyone knows your name. The other patrons were so friendly and many greeted me as well and the history of Sid's everyone seems to know. Now, for the food, I had the famous onion burger and onion rings to boot, the food was par excellence and yummy. I asked the cook if it was legal to sell such amazing burgers, turns out I was talking to Marty, the owner. Marty said he was retired, from what I saw it didn't look like a retired person to me, Marty was shaking and baking along with his lovely Daughter. In addition their lovely staff was just amazing. I have found a home. I highly recommend Sid's Diner, phenomenal experience and you can tell why people live there. Thank you Marty and staff!

Tried my first onion burger. Taste of history that tastes great. Also great tots, rings, and shakes. Not a big spot inside but they use all the floor space very well. Nice tribute wall to those that have served as well.

Google
I got the double onion burger. It's not called that on the menu, but you'll figure it out. Say "yes" to what they call "fried onions" on your burger. They mean grilled. They aren't battered and fried in oil. I went solo and managed to grab the last empty stool at the counter during peak lunch rush on July 3rd. (Go as a party of ONE to be assured a spot without waiting.)

Spent a night of a multi-day road trip in El Reno to randomly discover that El Reno was the birthplace of the Oklahoma Onion Smash burger. So, to stop in this town and have it be the birthplace of my favorite burger was pretty neat! We spent the night got up first thing in the morning and enjoyed Sid’s diner for an early lunch. Turns out they serve burgers all day so we could have gone during normal breakfast hours and gotten our burger fix. Knowing what I know about El Reno now, I would have planned more time in El Reno! Sid’s Burgers were truly delicious, the beef patty was flavorful the onions perfectly cooked, and the buns perfectly toasted yet soft and fresh! The Fries & Tater Tots were un-salted but had just come out of the oil, so they took salt perfectly and were cooked to perfection! Thank you, Sid’s, for preserving part of American Burger History! Sid’s is a MUST if you ever find yourself in or passing through El Reno! I know we will be back!

This restaurant is awesome! The owner cooked for us. He said he named the place after his dad. It sounds like the whole family works here. The food was great tasting! They also have very large portions. This place is worth the detour off the Interstate.

Google
Sid’s definitely serves one of the best and most original burgers in America. I’ve been coming here for years and it’s always very tasty and fresh. The burgers aren’t too big and they are too small and they taste delicious. The fries in particular are just little pieces of heaven. Never had an even a mediocre burger or food here. Must stop if you are traveling on i40!

Yelp
What a fantastic place to grab an iconic Onion Burger. I can't believe that I have lived in Oklahoma for 25 years and I am just now finally getting to taste the Original Oklahoma Onion Burger!!! All I can say is don't wait this is a must try place to eat. One thing I did find out is that you can actually make a reservation!! I would definitely do that! Instead as you enter the restaurant you will notice the seating is limited on the inside. There is a covered seating area/pavilion which you can also place your order from! We are provided with a pager to let us know we're next in line. Our wait was probably 5 minutes so not long. While waiting we had an opportunity to review the menu. Our server was Abby and she was great and very easy to talk too! It was easy for me, I chose the 1/2 lb onion burger with everything on it. Onion rings as the side were fantastic. Thick & crispy!! I decided I wanted to try their shakes so I asked if they had a Banana & Cherry which I've never had. A great combo!! My wife chose the Steak & Shake along with fries. She got the chocolate shake - another good selection! One note to mention if you like your fries crispy do not order them crispy. Get them cooked like the normally come and they will be perfect! Overall highly recommend to put this in your must places to try!

Yelp
Starting off this review with facts that we did try Robert's Diner last year and would have tried Sid's the next day but they were closed for some reason. Here we are today and we were able to make lunch at Sid's!! Great atmosphere and love all of the old pictures on the walls and tables. Service was fast and with such friendliness. We had options to sit outside under the enclosed patio seating area or sit inside which is a tight fit. We found a table inside and sat down fast. They take your order table side. Outside there is an electronic pad on each table to take online orders. It works efficiently. I ordered the classic regular original burger (double patty because I can) it was piping hot & fresh upon arrival. You can order with lettuce & tomato or without, I had it with. Grilled onions were perfect and I got someone's left over mushrooms from the grill and I'm not mad about it. Next time I will order with grilled mushrooms too. My burger did not have enough salt for my taste, my husband said his was too salty which might mean accidentally over salting on his patty and not mine . Fries are ordered to share for 2 or 3 people they are the skinny fries and were most delicious. Overall it was a good experience and I'm happy we stopped to try a Sid's burger. Give Sid's a try and tell me your honest opinion.

Yelp
Unique hamburger place. Small small dining area. Counter stools best to sit at unless you have a child. Always enjoy watching the cooks. Seemed to have different cooks since last time there. Main cook was a older lady. Hamburger not quite as good, not sure why. I couldn't help watching the French fry guy. He was a young guy working super hard. He never skipped a beat. He also was very polite! The teams seems to work well together here. They do their job well but wish they seemed happier. I need happy some days and today was one of them. You can even grab your meal and eat outside or in the enclosed table area on the side. We enjoy eating in car across street by the Route 66 sign.

Yelp
It's a small place but the food is big! Big portions, huge flavor. Ordered the onion rings and the regular double with the fried onions in the burger patty. Service was quick and efficient. There's plenty of parking on the street. If they're packed, remember I said it's a small place, there's an adjacent room for overflow. Oh, and it's on historic Route 66. Memorable.

Yelp
Our Thursday after game dinner was amazing. Stopped by Sid's diner in El Reno for some burgers and onion rings. The place was packed but we managed to find 2 seats at the bar. The cook, Marty was on it with about 30 burgers on the grill at once He was slapping those sucker's up in record time. You could here the sizzle of the beef and inuons and the smell wafting in the air. It was a sight to behold. The onion rings are absolutely amazing too. A big basket of crunchy hot goodness. And when those burgers were finally placed in front of us,piping hot--- we just dove in. It was quite the delicious treat. Thestaff is attentive, friendly and fast. The food is top notch for a little diner and worth the drive no matter where you are driving from in Oklahoma and beyond. I give it a ten=ten..

Yelp
100% worth the drive or time to experience the real "Oklahoma" onion fried burgers. A great experience

Yelp
Sid's Diner is an Icon, I had the privilege of having the amazing onion burger while talking to Sid, the service was awesome as we watched our burgers cook in a iconic diner. Sid waited till we finished our burgers to sit and talk for 20 minutes he made us feel at home in his diner. Sid thank you for your service to the United States of America. You won't go wrong with Sid's awesom little diner with great charm

Yelp
The best onion burger in Oklahoma. A must have if you've never been here. The staff is incredible and treat you like family. Can't recommend enough if you're looking for great burgers and fries.

Yelp
The OG Oklahoma Onion Burger done right! Hands down one of the best burgers I've had in my 59 years on this Earth! Warm bun, perfectly seasoned beef and all the veggies! It is a small shop. Not a lot of indoor seating. But on nice days there is an outdoor patio. And they do stay busy! When near OKC, there are two places to go for the best burgers. Sid's in El Reno. And Nick's in OKC. Best burgers in Oklahoma.

Yelp
Small burger place. Very good. Everything is made fresh. The prices are great and the atmosphere is fun. It is a must try burger place in El Reno.

Russell R.

Yelp
Was in OKC area. For 20 years we've always made time for stop at Little Mikes Hamburgers. Incredible onion burgers and onion rings. Friends keep telling us to go west to El Reno and hit Sids Diner. Guy Fieri says it's great. Okay we go. What a mistake. Very little and greasy. Burgers cooked in front of you. Kept watching thinking those are perfect flip them. They don't. Ours all went from brown to burnt black. Said something when served. Snarky girl said that's how they do them. Fries soso. Ketchup was excellent. Don't be a hipster. I'm not. But was talked into it this time. Way overpriced for nasty food. Locals at gas station heard us complaining afterwards. Said next time go to Roberts around the corner. Said that's where locals all eat. Sure will next time. Sids is tourist trap. I never was a fan of Guy Fieri but wife was. WAS. LOL

Yelp
The food here is amazing! My burger was seasoned and I loved the pickles that came with them. I didn't know it was an extra charge for veggies (it's called deluxe) I definitely didn't need them. The fries were really good too! I also got a banana shake and it was amazing!! Anyway the service was good. The food came out fast and our waiter was constantly checking on us. Great family friendly place. Small on the inside about 4 tables and countertop with about 8 seats. Anytime I'm out this way I'll def stop by!

Yelp
This is an American burger institution, so we had to try it on our way down to OKC (a little out of the way, but not by much). It was pretty empty when we arrived, but the place has an overall cozy vibe and very friendly workers. We ordered the famous fried onion (depression) burger, a cheeseburger for our daughter, a large basket of fries, and a side salad. I think we're perhaps the first people to order a salad there in 50 years because here's what came out: shredded iceberg lettuce (like you would put on a burger), some diced tomatoes, and a ton of shredded cheddar cheese (like you would put on a coney dog). So, yeah, joke's on us! The fries were thin and crispy, but there was zero salt on them and then you kind of had to eat them with the fork because they got so small and nubby towards the bottom. As for the burger, well, we hate to say this but it just wasn't that good. Very bland. We did love the onion component but the bun became pure mush quickly. Honestly, our daughter's plain cheeseburger was better :( We got a couple milkshakes to go, and while we love a thick milkshake, we do also like to have a proper straw for it! So we sat there and had them with spoons. The chocolate one tastes exactly like a Wendy's frosty and the coffee oreo one tasted entirely like oreo (that were pulverized into the shake). Both were pretty good. Bottom line: we're glad we came, but we do not feel a need to be back.

Yelp
Very classic (and delicious) milkshakes and scrumptious fried onion smash burgers. We like to bring our out of town visitors to Sid's so they can enjoy the good old fashioned burgers, fries and shakes.

Yelp
Well... when you think you have found your favorite spot for a burger, and then you run into THIS!! MEAT the chicken fried steak sandwich at SIDS! Oddly enough, the owner was talking with his meat supplier when I walked in, and I got to pick his brain about the meat. All I can say... (without giving away any secrets.) ALL the meat is fresh and never frozen... THAT'S ALL ILL SAY. Most places buy pre breaded frozen steaks. NOT HERE!!. This is a fresh not frozen, large, cubed steak, ran through an old-time tenderizer, then hand breaded. Well seasoned and super tender. Give it a try! It's my new favorite

J. B.

Yelp
Great burgers. Soft buns. Amazing onion rings. Cute little diner with pix and music from the 60's! Highly recommend!!! Outside covered patio is dog friendly! Love that
google avatar

Yelp
Sid's is the home of the smashed onion burger and it was tasty! The service was great and very friendly. The location is very small, as I counted a small number of tables inside but they do have a long counter you can sit at and watch them make these burgers fresh to order! There's also outside (air conditioned!!!) enclosed seating as well as some outdoor tables. Very cute spot. Definitely check it out if you're in El Reno!

Yelp
What can I say? Classic diner in historic El Reno. Just off Route 66, Sid's has earned notoriety from its appearances on many food shows like Man v Food and is featured in George Motz's book Hamburger America. The famous Oklahoma fried onion burger was created in El Reno during the Depression as a need to extend the amount of meat that was expensive and hard to come by. Sid's was not the original fried onion burger but it sure is a great one. Crispy flavorful edges and juicy center. Soft melt in your mouth buns. The service is super Oklahoma friendly. We like sitting at the counter for what the husband calls "a dinner and a show." Fun to watch them assemble the burgers. Sid's is a definite stop if you're looking for a great All American burger. But they also have breakfast items, sandwiches, coneys, and malts.

Yelp
Food is always on point ans amazing! Atmosphere is an old time diner and my family loves going. Can't beat the price for a bag of burgers

Yelp
Awesome food! Bests onion burgers and steak sandwiches! Shoestring type fries are a must!!! Small homey place. Must go when in El Reno or Yukon!!!

Yelp
We just had a very bad (I was going to say horrible) experience at Sid's this evening. We sat down at 6:40 p.m. ordered and drink and our food. The drink was delivered quickly, while we began waiting for the food. Other customers came into the diner, were seated, got their food, while we continued to wait. Our waitress never came by to check on us or tell us what the delay was - we had to wave her over. Then she went back to the grill area and did what seemed to be a rewrite of our order. It had now been 25 minutes and we began to think the food was going to messed up anyway so how much longer should we wait. We chose 5 more minutes and still nothing so we decided to leave for a total of 30 minutes in a place where we saw others sit, order, and within minutes their food was delivered. On the way out, I asked to see the manager who was busy at the grill. An older woman in charge was who came to talk to me and she stated she would take care of us if we would sit back down. She also told me she was face down in the grill busy. I had no confidence is how much longer it would take for that to happen or was concerned if they would even be able to get our order right. When I told her just write a note and we will think about coming back to get comped for such bad service and she would not agree to that. Sid's is 12 miles from our home so we really wanted it in order to make that drive. And you have now lost us as customers. We ended getting a really good meal at Swadley's even though they were not our first choice. If you are monitoring these less that complimentary posts get in the diner and find out what's going on. They weren't even busy when we first sat down and still could no deliver on our order. P.S. I woke up today thinking how in the world in such a small space you can look around the dining room and see there's a table with two people at it that are not eating and recognizing you have delivered food to tables around them that were occupied after the ones not eating. Can't you think "there's something wrong!"

Yelp
Visited Sid's Diner for lunch today. It was packed with customers. We ordered fries onion rings steak sandwich and burgers. Wow it was delicious and fast. What an operation.

Yelp
Small town diner, with southern hospitality service. You gotta get a Coney with everything!
google avatar

Ken F.

Yelp
We were traveling through Oklahoma and we wanted to have an authentic Oklahoma onion burger and this place did not disappoint. Nice 50s style diner with old photos of people from the town and hero veterans on the wall which we really respected! The food was great, and the service was also great, no complaints at all. We would come here again without a doubt!
google avatar

Yelp
From out of town and was looking for something to eat. Let me tell you all!!! Omg best burgers and fries!! Burger patties are freshly made and pressed! If you're missing old school mom and pop burger joint this is the place! Everyone was so nice as well!

Yelp
For as long as I've lived in Oklahoma City and as many onion burgers as I've tried, I had never made it to Sid's Diner in El Reno. I had to make an unexpected trip to near Hinton, so I decided to stop for a burger on the way home. First off, I loved the place the minute I walked it. It's pretty small and I wanted to watch them make the burgers, so I grabbed a seat at the counter. You cannot beat the smell of onions on the grill while listening to Marty Robbins sing "El Paso" on the radio. And everyone is so nice. I think every one of their employees stopped by to chat or ask me if I needed anything. I miss that. I ordered the regular, a quarter-pound onion burger with cheese and pickles. I'm sorry, but lettuce, tomato or anything besides mustard just doesn't belong on an onion burger. The King - with two patties - is only $6 (!!!), but after a late lunch there's no way I could have eaten it all. When the meat goes on the grill, it just looks like a small puck. They pile a huge amount of onions on each one, then smash them into the burger. This is so much better than simply putting grilled onions on top of a burger. They flip and smash it again to really incorporate the onions into the patty. The patty is reasonably thin, but the perfect size for their buns. It's the equal of any onion burger I've had. I'm a huge Nic's Grill fanboy, but I don't know that I could say which I like better. As John Wayne said in Rio Bravo, "It'd be pretty close. I'd hate to have to live on the difference." The fries were good too, but the burger overshadows everything else. This definitely will not be my last trip to Sid's.

Yelp
Great little place for bringing friends on Route 66 burgers are tasty and the staff are amazing.

Yelp
Best onion burger in the state of Oklahoma, service was good and friendly , haven't been here in years, still awesome
google avatar

Yelp
We make it a point to stop here on our way from iowa to Az. We have had the breakfast before so we thought we would try the onion burger, wow what a great burger with thin cut grilled onions and all the choices of vegetables you would want Order fries and was told to order 1/2 order because a full order for 2 people was way too much, great advice and they were great as well Over all the place is 5 red stars and we will back this Spring
google avatar

Conrad K.

Yelp
Damn that was a good burger. Came from DFW Texas and this place is everything you'd think. Super classic diner look. Way bigger burger and better price than I expected. Amazing family and service real personable. Small inside but great patio and space outside.

Yelp
Great food! Been going here since I was a kid. I love the cheese chili fries and their king cheeseburger with grilled onions.

Yelp
Hoooo Emmmm Geeee! A blast from the past that will kick you right in the tastebuds! If you looked up the classic American diner in the dictionary, you'd see a picture of Sid's staring at you right in the face. This is the textbook definition of a classic diner and it hits all the nostalgia points. Not only do they serve up one of the best onion burgers in the great nation, but you're basically stepping through a Time Machine back to the past to experience a part of dining that has been lost. Sid's is worth it for the experience alone! Add in the World Famous Oklahoma Onion Burger and you've got a combination that brings you back for more. Classic flat top cooking that every place tries to mirror and it is sitting right in the middle of Oklahoma. We're talking about great ingredients and a passionate chef behind the helm bringing years and years of experience. Before you try to call yourself a burger expert, you have got to give Sid's Diner a try. I mean, I thought I knew how to make an onion burger until I tried this place. So much more to learn. The service is great! The staff are super friendly and your food is prepared by the master and made with all the love! You need to run, not walk, and Go Try Sid's if you have never been before. Just try to take it all in and appreciate it for what it is and I guarantee you will be back again and again.
google avatar

Dee G.

Yelp
Fantastic burgers and service. Best onion burger anywhere. Fries and onion rings are also delicious, hot, crispy. And the shakes are the best around! Especially banana and peanut butter.

Dimitri R.

Yelp
I went 1,000 miles for this burger with absurdly high expectations and I was not disappointed in the slightest. Incredibly friendly people and amazing food and shakes. The interior is super home-y and wholesome as well. For sure try the regular fried onion burger, but really can't go wrong.
google avatar

Donn D.

Yelp
I don't care for steamed or cooked onions. Having said that, I didn't know this was their thing and so I unintentionally ordered the onion burger. I ordered it the way I normally do, with onions, thinking they would be raw. When she gave me the burger she could tell I didn't know that's how they did it and said she'd make me a new one but first I had to try their specialty. I tried it as she looked on with smug satisfaction, sure she was about to have another convert. I thanked her but said I'd still prefer it with raw onions. She was sad. Having said that, the burger was very good, as were the fries. They have an extensive breakfast menu as well so I may have to check in again before I leave town tomorrow.I can see why they were on Man Vs Food.
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
It's about 30 min drive from OKC. The burgers are awesome! Would definitely recommend it!
google avatar

Sue P.

Yelp
The burgers are amazing. It's a small place but they have an enclosed patio with additional seating. Busy at lunch time but that's to be expected when the food or so good - well worth the wait (which really wasn't long at all).
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
We were headed back home to Dallas after a weekend in OKC and I convinced my wife to make a 25 minute detour to El Reno. Man, so glad I did. When you pull up to this joint. When you walk in. You instantly feel the history of this place. It's small and quaint and the smell of sizzling burger and charring onions is embedded into the drywall of this place. We were fortunate enough to be seated by the counter so we can get a look at all the action. Let me tell you something, when it comes to piling on the thinly sliced onions, these guys do not mess around!!! Heaps and heaps I tell you. Adam, Sids Diner legacy, even let me creep behind the counter and film him cooking. They even use a special brick mason hardware tool to smash the burgers with the onions on the flat top. Clearly they're serious about smashing the crap out of these things. Looked like a pancake by the time he was done with them. Time to eat. The fries: divine! My burger was straight bliss. Like I never want a burger done any other way again. Just melty cheesy burnt onion meaty goodness! I'm not saying this burger is better than some A5 Wagyu burger you would get for $500 bucks in Michelin star rated New York restaurant. But I'm not saying it isn't either :) Come and enjoy!o

Yelp
Every chance I get when close to El Reno Oklahoma. It is pretty much understood we eat at SIDs Diner for the absolute best Onion burgers. 2nd and 3rd maybe even 4th generationsrunning this establishment everytime I eat here I'm entertained by a wall with hundreds of map tacks in a map of the world on Sid's wall just to the right of the entrance and across from a lunch counter type seating area. The smell of onions being grilled along with fresh ground beef being cooking on a flat top grill that is super hot. These burgers are amazing. When friends come to town if they don't know about Sids I take them there. I tell them I'll order the best burgers on the menu. Leave it to me. I ask if they have a preference as to how they wa t it made. If they say just order what you want me to have. Then, I get excited. I tell the girl to give us a double King Burger. That is a one pound burger and then I order them an order of fries. She asks full or half order. I tell her full order. They are used to me doing this so they don't say anything. Food comes and you can hear the gasp that almost sounds like a vapor lock on a car. I get a good laugh and tell them, "Don't worry. You can take the rest with you and eat it at a later time. When it's all said and done, they love the burger and fries. These are great people. You'll love their friendly disposition and excellent burgers. I do love them too.

Yelp
"As Seen On TV" . Yes, stop and eat. Yes, it's worth getting off the interstate. Come on, it's a Route 66 thing and an Iconic Oklahoma Food. Watch burgers get smashed on the flat top by a big spatula that looks more like a bricklayers trowel than a kitchen tool. Watch the videos. Enjoy.

Donna B.

Yelp
They are friendly and breakfast taste great. Burgers are great to. They have outside seating so there is alotof room.

Today I happened to be in El Reno and decided to order Sid's to take home and eat. I did a quick search online and noticed you could order through CHOWNOW with no extra fees so I ordered our food, headed to Sid's drive thru and the line moved pretty quickly. Food was great we will definitely be back. Thanks for a wonderful lunch.

Yelp
Best burger! We stopped in on a cross country trip and so glad we did! Restaurant is tiny inside, there is seating outside. Was very busy when we were there. Only downside is they have you pay at the cash register, which is right by the door, which leads to a very long, congested line trying to get in or out the door.

Yelp
best onion burgers in the country. I went here 12 years ago and loved them. I recently went back last month. the burgers are still as good as ever.

Yelp
No doubt the best hamburger in the state. The char burger is incredible. The fries served piping hot. Servers friendly and very efficient. Adam the owner and cook is very nice.

Yelp
The reason I give Sids diner a five star review is for three reasons, I will start with Sid's being a clean and organized restaurant. The second reason was for the service. It was way better than most restaurants here in Oklahoma. It showed that the staff worked well together and they did a great job. The last reason and definitely not the least important is the quality and the flavor of the cooking. Not sure if the cook was the owner but he definitely had a passion for cooking a good burger. I recommend SIDS diner if you want a great burger. I wish I'd come here soon.

Yelp
Great burger! I stopped here on a trip across the country and it was so worth it. Sit at the counter across from the grill.
