The 21 Best Restaurants in San José, Costa Rica

"Chef Pablo Bonilla has diligently studied Indigenous Costa Rican cooking to refute critics who doubt the country’s historical gastronomy is equal to that of its Latin American neighbors. At internationally acclaimed Sikwa, he uses local ingredients and provincial techniques in a warm, casual atmosphere. The menu is filled with spectacular displays of Costa Rica’s ancestral Indigenous cuisine: Several dishes are prepared with native annatto seeds, the pastel de pejibaye (peach palm) fruit is filled with pork marinated in vino de coyol and served over tamarind sauce, and grilled bone marrow topped with beef tartare comes with tortillas made with native maiz pujagua. Through grilled jumbo shrimp over arroz de maíz (porridge) — a play on shrimp and grits — and sweet corn yoltamales for dessert, Bonilla finds connection with pre-Hispanic maize cultures all the way north to the American South." - Bill Esparza

The Unsung Food Destinations to Travel for Now

"Pablo Bonilla serves pejibaye tamales and achiote chicken with pineapple, while working closely with the Bribri people in the Talamanca mountains. Part of a foodie buzz on Calle 33, with sell-out falafels at Faqua’s and craft brews at Costa Rica Beer Factory."

What Is Costa Rican Food? - Eater

"Pablo Bonilla’s restaurant Sikwa, in San José’s Los Yoses neighborhood, has led the way, strengthening relationships with fishermen and foragers. The chef has also been working closely with Indigenous communities like the Boruca and Bribrí to resurrect ancestral dishes. The operation was originally located in a small corner in a cultural center, but since 2021, Bonilla has served a seven-course tasting menu from a more formal, jungle-themed space, complete with a full bar of original cocktails utilizing ingredients like passion fruit mead and breadnut bitters. In 2024, Bonilla is opening the 30-seat Crudo Izakaya Latino next door, melding Japanese and Costa Rican flavors." - Nicholas Gill

Hands down one of the best meals and restaurants in Costa Rica. Unique flavors and locally sourced, fresh ingredients. Michelin star worthy. You can taste and feel the passion of the chef in each and every dish. It is a fine dining place. But the prices are justified for the quality and way more affordable than you would pay for something similar in say New York or a big city in US. Highly recommend if you are in San Jose and looking to try some local flavors with a twist.

Very underwhelming food. Don't know how this is ranked 43rd best restaurant in Latin America. I could name 43 restaurants in Mexico City alone that are better. There's better elevated dining in San Jose too. Textures were odd in some dishes like the mushroom and heart of palm pate which was really globby. The chicken was pretty one dimensional in flavor. Had to ask for hot sauce to make it flavorful. The empanada was tasty. Veggie options below average.

Wonderful restaurant in Costa Rica! Worth a stop in San Jose. All the food was really well done and the space was beautiful. The staff were very attentive to dietary restrictions and the mocktail pairing was an excellent addition to the tasting menu.

Great experience! We went for the 5 course tasting menu (even though it is not on the menu, it is still offered). I think the dish selection is great. We loved the usage of traditional ingredients in new and creative ways and how they were paired and how well they worked together. Our only suggestion if you go with the 5 course tasting menu would be to order an extra appetizer before the desert because we think 5 courses might be cutting it a little short.

I could say the best food I have had in Costa Rica (but there was a problem with the place, keep reading...), outstanding food, preparation, and flavors. I was really impressed. I really recommend anyone for a special occasion. You are almost there, the bad side, the venue is more of a public school cafeteria room. They have a serious echo and acoustics problem. Most people do not understand acoustics and do not consider nor treat a place for its acoustics. Conversations were impossible, the one who yells the most is the one able to by heard. It is a concrete bubble. Tables way to close to each other. It does not make sense to pay good money for a place where you cannot talk to a date, family or friends.

Sikwa is currently the No. 86 best restaurant on the Latin American 100 Best Restaurants list. The restaurant is gorgeous. Great, laidback vibes. Service and staff are incredible, lots of great recommendations. Duck Croquettes - 5/5 Empanadas - 5/5 Fish and Rice - 5/5 Truffles - 4/5 From start to finish, amazing restaurant. The croquettes were fantastic. Shredded duck, and a delicious sauce accompanied it. The empanadas were sooo fresh, and sooo tasty. The fish and rice dish was very good. Truffles were tasty too.
