4 Unexpected Foods to Pair With Sake | Eater

"A Thai restaurant that serves both warm and chilled sake alongside dishes from larb to pad kee mao; crisp, aromatic sakes complement the multi-layered sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami flavors, while spicier dishes benefit from sakes with a touch of sweetness and acidity to tame heat—lower-alcohol Junmai Ginjo or Junmai Daiginjo styles are recommended so the alcohol doesn’t amplify spiciness." - Vox Creative

Google
The food and service were solid, but nothing really stood out. I ordered a red curry with beef, but they brought me one with chicken. After I mentioned it, they quickly switched it for beef, but the portion was noticeably smaller—half the size of the chicken dish, with fewer veggies and less protein. The flavors were great, but it was disappointing that when I pointed out the portion issue, they didn’t offer any kind of solution.

Google
Delicious Thai food with excellent service. We ordered a soup, a salad and a curry between us and it was the perfect amount. We ordered the vegetable Penang curry and loved that it wasn’t just bell peppers as happens sometimes in other places! There was a good variety of vegetables. Our server was very attentive throughout. We also loved the cocktail menu. This is a wonderful Bucktown option!

Google
The food was amazing! Met a group of friends here and all ordered something different so we could try everything and nothing was disappointing. We loved all of it. Service was excellent, one server, but he handled all the tables, at the same, very well. Food came out steamy hot and tasted really fresh. The dinning room is cute, you recognize a few things from IKEA or Crate & Barrell and it reminds you that you are at a locally owned restaurant. It was nice to sit by the window and watch all the cars and people going by. With so many excellent food choices in Chicago, I was so happy I found this place!

I have eaten at Silom 12 a number of times now, and I'll definitely be going back for more. I give them high marks for their customer service due to their knowledge of which dishes are gluten-free and which ones can be made gluten-free. My go-to dishes are the green papaya salad (so delicious 😋) and their panang curry with shrimp. Its richly flavored broth is spicy, but not scorching. They can make it hotter for the more adventurous. The one dish I tried but didn't like was their Basil beef. It was one of those dishes that can be made gluten-free by substituting the soy (or oyster) sauce. It wasn't terrible, but I won't be ordering that again.

Google
Great high-quality Thai spot for a last minute walk-in! The fried chicken fried rice and the crispy coconut shrimp were our favorites. I’m glad we gave this spot a second chance, as the service was much quicker at dinner than our previous lunch experience.

Google
Everything I eat here is wonderful. Great balance of flavor in the dishes and portions are exactly the right size. I appreciate that when you order a dish with meat that there is an actual appreciable amount of meat in it. Just had the seafood drunken noodles and they certainly didn’t skimp on the seafood! They also do a great job getting just the right amount of char/caramelization to add depth of flavor.

Google
Can’t believe we never tried this before. Everything we had was delicious. We both had soups for appetizers then stir fries for entres. Extensive menu. Portions were generous. Decor is very nice, beautiful baskets on display. We will definitely come back soon.

Google
The server, Chris, was very respectful and attentive. The food was the best part. This restaurant has never disappointed me once! And I know that every time I come back, it will only get better. My family loves it! The food is exquisite, so if you are in Chicago and have not had Thai food just yet, then Silom 12 has got to be on your list! If there is anything, I wish the space was larger. Other than that, it is a must visit. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
This place has been consistently good for what feels like a decade. Pad Thai, Egg Rolls, and Crab Rangoons all smash. Curry's are solid. Menu has items that cater to all which is nice. You can definitely walk in here.

Yelp
We came in late on a Tuesday, and didn't realize they were closing soon. They still told us to get seated and that it was enough time for us to order something. We ordered the chicken wings, ramen and curry. The interior was very beautiful and service was kind. The chicken wings were flavorful and crunchy. The curry was tasty and filling. The ramen was very disappointing. The broth had a weird aftertaste and it was a clear broth with no seasoning. This is not the place for ramen unfortunately. They were kind enough to take it back because even my partner said it tasted very off. I hope it was a bad batch.. but everything else seemed decent.

Yelp
This is actually my freaking spottt. I order takeout all the time here but the inside is really nice, everyone who works here is extremely friendly, and the food is legit good. One of the things that made me obsessed with this place is their papaya salad. So far the best papaya salad I've had in chicago and I'm hmong so I loveee papaya salad. Did I mention it's BYOB? I highly recommend this neighborhood thai spot in Bucktown!

Lois P.

Yelp
Unhygienic and they so rude to the costumers and the delivery drivers. I saw misbehaving with the drivers

Yelp
I've eaten here a few times over my decade in Chicago. It's always a reliable, solid Thai spot. The pad Thai is very yummy and has all the qualities of pad Thai that I enjoy (sweet, savory, peanutty, texture, moisture), plus the best bonus is the amount of tofu that they add (lots)! They have excellent crab rangoon, my only complaint is the size, which has historically been extremely small, the size of a quarter, and then has an excessive amount of wrapping at the tail end (which I don't eat). Pick-up/Take-out is super quick! I ordered here the other night and my food was ready in about 10 minutes!

Yelp
We enjoyed our visit to Silom 12! We selected this Thai place because their menu wasn't all over the place and because while not shown on their website they have a full bar (confirmed over the phone). Service was good except for a slow start taking our initial drink order. We had the summer wraps (spring rolls), which could have used more sauce so we asked for it, the papaya salad and the beef salad, all of which were fresh as could be. For entrees we had green curry beef, red curry shrimp, soft shell crab, and steamed fish of the day (salmon, also needed more sauce). Spicing was balanced and flavorful. The dining space was tasteful and nicely appointed. My vodka martini was generous and automatically came up with an olive, no need to specify! We would return.

Yelp
We stopped in here a few times when life got a little to fast to make a full dinner. Each time, what we've ordered... we've devoured. Their takeout process is pretty efficient and we never got around to joining the dining room for a sit down meal, so I can only comment on the takeout food... which I thoroughly enjoyed!

Yelp
The service was good and the food was flavorful! I love that they have a separate vegan menu as it makes it much easier to navigate. When I went for lunch the place was not very busy so if you are looking for less of a crowd that is a great time to stop by!

Yelp
Silom 12 is in my neighborhood, but it took 6 years for me to finally try it. Most of the reviews seemed promising, and the pictures looked good. It was already late, so we wanted to order somewhere that would arrive quickly. While it did arrive within 20 mins, the food was hot, and everything was packaged nicely, we weren't satisfied. The food is just okay. The Silom Wings were quite fatty and only the breading had flavor. The Baby Egg Rolls were boring, but fine. The Panang Curry was the best item we ordered, flavorful. The Pad Woon Sen had potential- too salty, but the ingredients/quality was good. Overall, if we need a quick delivery, we would consider, but it won't be our first choice.

Yelp
Amazing vegetarian options- I mean, a whole menu of them! My partner said the tilapia was delicious too. Friendly service and lovely ambiance. Go here!

Wendy C.

Yelp
Wtf Silom? I order from you all the time. Who made this Tom kha? Is this Tom kha? Am I in an alternate reality? It had no kaffir or galangal or lemongrass flavor. Do you have a new chef? This isn't right.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious food, relaxing environment during the early hours, and great service as well. Definitely a spot to stop by for a drink and a few plates with friends or family
google avatar

Prashmi K.

Yelp
Drunken noodle - 3/5 ( won't order again, I wish it had more flavor, it was bland for my taste) Panang curry - 4/5 ( good curry!) Will try other stuff soon!

Yelp
Written to "All My Life" by K-Ci & JoJo I will never find another pad Thai sweeter than You, sweeter than you And I will never find another green curry more delicious than you, more delicious than you Silom 12, Vegetables to me could not be fresher Chicken to me cooked under pressure Wontons to me are like a treasure Other Thai to me is always lesser You are the only one my everything and for you this song I sing All my life I pray for some Thai like you And I thank God that I, that I finally found you

Yelp
Used the Yelp app to place a pickup order tonight and was excited to try a few things. First off, everyone who raved about the crab Rangoon -- you're the best! They are so crispy and creamy at the same time. Best!!! Then I got stir fried broccoli with veggies and it was a surplus of al dente veggies however the brown sauce was more like brown water. Was really hoping for that brown sauce at Chinese restaurants but was disappointed. Orange chicken though was also very good. Chicken was lightly breaded and in a perfectly citrus sauce. Thai fried rice was lack luster needing soy sauce and the extra chili sauce from the crab Rangoon. Had less of a "fried" texture but we are open to trying the other fried rices in the future. All in all it felt like a much healthier alternative to traditional Chinese or Thai takeout which we appreciated and will return for.

Yelp
Finally stopped in for a weekend lunch, they have an all-day menu and a mighty big one, may I add. We started with Silom's Pot Stickers and went with the Green Curry with chicken and the Spicy Fried Rice with veggies. All were solid options and the curry had a unexpected kick to it and the potstickers came with a very balanced soy-sauce infused dip that was platable. Impressed by this restaurant, I will surely return. It was so good that it's now my #1 Thai restuarant in Chicago Pro Tip: For you vegetarians out there, most of Silom 12's items contain fish sauce, but they can substitute that out if you ask.

Yelp
I've been looking for a Thai place for a while, so I decided to try Silom 12 since it's right down the road from me. I ordered the pad Thai, a side of rice, and crab rangoon. The crab rangoons were an interesting shape, like nothing I've ever seen, but they were quite good. Due to their shape, the bottom was very stuffed with filling and delicious, but once you eat the bottom, that leaves just a dry top, so I would've preferred if the shape was different to make the filling more evenly distributed. As for the pad Thai, while the flavor was fine, the pad Thai noodles were not the typical flat noodles that I'm used to seeing pad Thai. Since I was hoping for traditional pad Thai, it was unexpected and was very annoyed that there was no warning about this. A similar situation happened with the sticky rice. It was served in a sort of husk that made it super difficult to extract and I felt like I was underserved for what I paid. If you're looking for traditional Thai food, this is not it, but if you want trendy, this is the place.

Yelp
Amazing customer service! Very extensive menu and cozy atmosphere. Only down side is theirs no happy hour

Yelp
Silom is my go-to for Thai food in the neighborhood. The paht siee, curries, gui chai and holy basil chicken are all solid.

Anna M.

Yelp
We stopped by on a Saturday evening and we're so surprised with how empty this place was! It was our first time dining in instead of getting takeout and it did not disappoint. We ordered the Panang curry, the green curry, and the calamari. I figure that people may still think that they're take-out only, but there's plenty of seating in the back! Everything was delicious and came out super quick. This is a great neighborhood gem.
google avatar

Yelp
Egg rolls smelt like swine flu. Idk if they were kept in a barn but god damn bro. That's my review I needed characters
google avatar

Bianca R.

Yelp
By far the BEST Tom Kar and Tom Yum soup I have had in the city!! The Pad thai was a little dry for my liking but the orange chicken made up for it!! Their crab rangoons are also phenomenal!!
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
We love silom! Delicious. Get the coconut shrimp, pad Thai, panang curry, mango bubble tea w tapioca& Thai iced tea !

Yelp
Food sucks. I ordered pad thai, it was horrible.

Yelp
How Silom 12 treats their Delivery Drivers. I'm a delivery driver and just picked up a Door Dash order from this restaurant in Wicker Park. They had messaged me saying the order was ready for pickup however, when I arrived I was told it would be a 7 (ended up being 10) minute wait. Since I had to wait and I was on the road all day I asked if they had a restroom. I was told they do, but I'm not allowed to use it. When I asked why I was told thay it's only for customers. And delivery drivers aren't considered customers. I tried to explain that as a delivery driver I'm acting on behalf of the customer and Im technically a business partner with them, but I was shut down and told that its the owners policy. I then had to drive 30 minutes to deliver the order before I could get off the road and use a bathroom. I'm posting this here in hopes it reaches the owner. The staff was just doing their job and following their owners' policy. But this is a seriously messed up policy to have. We make you money by taking these orders. It would cost you 10x as much to hire your own delivery drivers and if you did you'd only be able to reach a quarter of the customers you do by using 3rd party delivery services. Also, when you mark an order as complete, but it's not actually complete, it messes with our time and money. Not only does it go against your partner agreement with DoorDash, but that's time I could have spent delivering another order. The least you can do to make up for it is let us use your bathroom!

Yelp
A weeknight staple! Great food and reasonably priced. We come for takeout all the time and it's always fresh and delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow were the apps expensive here. Ordered 2 apps for our side dishes with our home cooked meal and it was $20 for crab Rangoon and chicken satay. It was like $1.5 per crab Rangoon! Tried this place twice now. Nothing to rave about unfortunately. Pad Thai was just okay. Probably won't be coming back.
google avatar

Mag T.

Yelp
The Panang Curry is amazing! Super flavorful and the perfect amount of spice (medium.) the restaurant is super tiny only a few tables. Ordered online and there was no option to get jasmine rice which is included. You have to select brown or sticky rice for $1 extra. I wanted to try the sticky rice anyway so it was fine. It was ok but I would get regular jasmine rice in the future. Cant wait to try other dishes!
google avatar

Alicia E.

Yelp
I came for second time to this place the waitress was so rude, I found a piece of metal in the food and I didn't want my money back, but at least an apology, I understand that can happen when you are preparing food. But not even an apology? I will never come back. Bad service and no appreciation to customers. Food is good service horrible.
google avatar

Robert K.

Yelp
Y'all I've been ordering the Crab Rangoon, summer wraps, and panang curry once a month for like 6 years and I have zero regrets this place is GREAT. Relaxed for dining in and FAST for delivery. Love you guys never change thx.
google avatar

Lynn M.

Yelp
Ordered for pick up we got there 15 min after and it was ready in a bag. Felt safe getting food from them. They did a good set up for Covid. Tom Kar - this was good on a cold day. It has whole mushrooms and was more on the sweeter side since it was mixed with coconut Crab Rangoon- these were crunchy and filled with crab meat. Thai fried rice- this was full of flavor and had some left overs for the next day. I could definitely get this again. Silom wing - this was good too.
google avatar

Daniel F. M.

Yelp
I ordered online and I get there a little early to pick up, so I'm the meantime i head towards the restroom. The guy that works there steps in front of me and says "can I help you?" I tell him I'm just heading to the restroom. He says I can't let you use it." Why? "It's only for customers." I am a customer. He's says "sorry my boss's orders". What kind of shit is this!? I felt discriminated against, this is some racist shit. Never coming back here, I ordered from here regularly too. I should file a law suit.

Yelp
Big flavor, fair prices, and orders accepted directly from the Yelp App. Silom 12 has got it going on. 55 My sister and I ordered Paht Siew with Tofu, Green Curry with Veggie, and Silom Salad for delivery. I'm mid meal writing this review because I need to rave about these flavors of this Paht Siew. It brings me back to my year abroad in Thailand. The noodles aren't too thick or dry as I commonly come across and the flavor's got a great balance of sweet and savory. (Very) delicious "mak mak"! You'll have to wait on my sister's review for feedback on the green curry. Can't openly admit that I tasted her dish before she got to it (; With these flavors and prices, I'll happily change out of my sweatpants and dine in at Silom with friends for lunch or dinner. "Zoot zoot" (cheers) Silom 12, loving what you do!

Yelp
I'm a new resident of Chicago and have been looking for my Thai spot - I think this is it! This was probably some of the best Thai food I've ever had. To preface, I'm a vegetarian so I am a huge fan of any Thai restaurant that has vegetarian options and can be clear about which dishes don't contain fish sauce. This restaurant had an entire two pages of vegetarian options - many of which I had never seen on Thai menus before. I enjoyed trying some new things today such as the chu chee tofu (gently fried tofu with a delicious curry type sauce on top), mun tho veggie buns (contained sweet soy glazed mushrooms and asparagus - so good), and the star of the show - the khao soi with tofu. I have never khao soi before, but I think this may be my new favorite Thai dish. Would highly recommend Thai restaurant to anyone looking for delicious, authentic Thai food. Prices were quite reasonable for the quality of food.

Yelp
Been here twice with friends, everyone loved it both times. Food was good quality, super kind service, fun mixed drinks, but also non-alcoholic choices too. Stylish decor for inside dining. Loved the spicy lime leaf noodle.
google avatar

Alyse C.

Yelp
Fantastic! Had the green curry, drunken noodles, and sticky mango rice. Everything was amazing! Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Siri M.

Yelp
This is our go-to spot for takeout! The dishes are all so tasty and reasonably priced. The takeout is usually done pretty quickly too- so it's perfect for those days when you just don't feel like cooking! Definitely order from them if you're craving Thai.
google avatar

Carlos R.

Yelp
My go to for Thai in wicker park / Logan area. Always consistent and they have great customer service.
google avatar

Y'Noka B.

Yelp
I ordered from here on Monday. I ordered the green curry with chicken, a side of sticky rice, a side of jasmine rice, and vegetable egg rolls. It was the only thing I had eaten that day. The next morning, I woke up with food poisoning. I'll spare all the nasty details, however, I did have to go to the hospital as a result of my dehydration and inability to keep anything down. By far one of the worst cases of food poisoning I have ever had. Green Curry

Yelp
Not bad! We decided to trek out of our usual 1 mile radius and check out Silom 12 out in Bucktown. First thing is first, this place is BYOB! They seem to have a full bar, yet for $2/person you can bring your own! Score. For food, we shared the an order of the basil chicken and pad see ew with beef. To be honest, pad see ew is really our only way of measuring how good a Thai spot is compared to others in the city as it is our favorite dish. Gotta say the food all around was great! The basil chicken had some nice heat to it and went well with the side of jasmine rice. The pad see ew with beef was just as solid and as good as you'd find at your favorite Thai spot. So overall, no complaints from our end. Surprisingly it was practically dead in terms of how many patrons check this spot our for lunch on a weekend so service was not an issue for us. I gotta say I did dig the modern interior vibes they got going. After all was said and done, our bill total came to about $28 which wasn't bad at all. They are apart of the SpringRewards network, so be sure to check out that for deals! Being the unusually warm weekend that it was, we ended up checking out the 606 walkway which wasn't too far from here. Definitely worth a spot if you want to get a nice walk in after a meal from here. Anyways, that's all I got! 'Til next time, cheers! 49/365

Yelp
Tried again because of the summer rolls and crab ragoons(they are that good). Went a totally different direction and did orange chicken.... and it was fantastic. The sauce is excellent and the breading is perfectly crispy. Balance of breading to chicken was pretty good and a good portion. Comes with white rice but you also have the option of sticky or brown rice. I guess Chinese entrees are the way to go.

Yelp
It seems you can find a Thai restaurant just about anywhere but an exceptional one is hard to come by. Especially one that you want to repeatedly go back to and try multiple dishes. Silom 12 is the prize Thai restaurant you're looking for. I've tried the panang curry, kao soi,Thai coon, prik prao fried rice with fried chicken, Thai fried rice and padh Thai. Not one dish disappoints. With each one unique and bursting with flavor I was intrigued to try something new each time I ordered. I highly recommend Silom 12 to anyone who needs a great Thai food experience and is looking for a dish that will having you licking the container and wishing you ordered extra cuz there will be no leftovers for the next day!
google avatar

Lukas V.

Yelp
GET THE GREEN CURRY. Seriously. It's some of the best I've had. Just do it. You won't regret it. Love this place.
google avatar

Caris C.

Yelp
Panang curry was very watery and not flavorful at all. Not sure if the chef was having a bad day..... Do not recommend. The Crab rangoon is just OK. It has a weird shape so you get a huge ball of cream cheese.
google avatar

Lydia K.

Yelp
I just moved to the area and am a big fan of Thai food, so finding my new regular Thai spot was a must. I'm so glad this is the closest to me, because it's also the best I've ever had. The seafood drunken noodles has great flavor and is so loaded with full pieces of chunky fresh seafood. I am blown away that it is only $12 because they could get away with selling it for $15+ . All curries are creamy and so comforting. When I can't decide between getting the drunken noodles or curry, I get the drunken noodles with an order of the Tom kar soup, which is similar and creamy but also sour in the best way. To top it off, you need to get their perfect Thai iced tea. I've gotten takeout here more than weekly since moving. Opart Thai was my go-to before but I believe their quality has gone down over the years i.e. less flavor, more dry food, skimping out on protein and none of these are the case for Silom 12. Even the biggest Thai lovers won't regret ordering from here. Take it from me!

C F.

Yelp
The vibe was amazing. I almost don't want to post so that the vibe stays as it is The hot and sour soup was thinner than I've had in the past and I really liked it; it was also actually spicy which was both good and more than I was expecting/prepared for--but no regrets. The paht woon sen with chicken was perfectly fine. The pricing was great. I almost don't want to review this place so no one else discovers it.
google avatar

Nicole W.

Yelp
Just here to say the mango sticky rice needs more attention. If you've ever been to Thailand you'd understand how necessary this is. The mango is always so good, the sticky rice on point, the coconut cream is icing on the cake. If I could eat it everyday I would.
google avatar

Lisa P.

Yelp
I got take out from Silom 12 last week and had a wonderful experience. Food was ready right on time. They have it well organized and the restaurant is blocked off so you can only have 1 people in at a time to grab food and go. I had ridden my scooter over and saw me struggling to fit it in my backpack and came out with a bag so I could carry it more easily. And the food is really good! I got the spring rolls and mango sticky rice. The spring rolls are an app but great for a light meal for one person.

Yelp
Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. Looking to try a new Thai place, I feel like Yelp and GrubHub let us down. We ordered crab rangoon, pad Thai with chicken and panang curry with shrimp. Of all the dishes we got, the pad Thai was the least liked. Manfriend got it and wondered where all of the veggies were, it was pretty much egg, noodles and chicken. He found it rather bland. The panang curry was ok, it seemed a bit light on the shrimp, but had a decent amount of spice. GrubHub didn't specify spice levels, but I asked for medium in the special instructions and felt they delivered. The crab rangoon was probably my favorite of all the things we got; a good balance of filler and wrapper. Overall, fine, but unlikely to make our Thai takeout rotation.
