How This Coffee Entrepreneur Beat Incredible Odds to Give Back to War-Torn Rwanda | Eater LA

"Opened about a year ago by Jack Karuletwa—who survived the Rwandan genocide and built the business to help the poorest Rwandan coffee farmers access the global market—this café pairs a trendy Los Angeles coffee-house look (brick arches, glass windows, a visible silver eco-friendly Loring roaster and an aqua-and-white Synchro T2 espresso machine) with a clear social mission. The shop roasts in-house and practices direct trade with a women’s coffee group in Musanze, on the doorstep of Volcanoes National Park, sending farmers pictures and videos of customers enjoying their beans and directing proceeds to causes such as Gorilla Doctors and organizations that build schools and support widows and orphans. The menu features three signature drinks—Jen’s latte (white chocolate), Baby Wyatt (steamed milk with banana syrup, banana slices and whipped cream) and Gorilla’s Eye (drip coffee with a double shot of espresso)—alongside classic espresso and brewed offerings. Roasts are offered as medium, medium-dark and an extra-dark French style (no light roast), and the beans are described as showing citrus notes (lemon, orange) or bourbon-varietal flavors of caramelized cane sugar, cinnamon and chocolate; the owner plans to expand sourcing to neighboring Uganda, Burundi and the DRC while keeping support for Rwanda central to the operation." - Eater

Google
A solid coffee shop with lots of goodies and the interior design was top notch. I just ordered a matcha latte with whole milk and it was pretty good. Solid taste and temperature with a good amount of sweetness for the honey. I’d definitely come back here again to try their other menu items or even stop by to get some work done at their solid patio and lounge area.

Google
I was not expecting this to be a full menu cafe but it is. Gorgeous location with more than enough seating and atmosphere and so much more than simply coffee! I stopped in for breakfast. Great coffee & pastries! I shall return for lunch soon!

Dianna

Google
Large seating area. The lobby seating has a nice ambiance. Everything is served in to-go containers even if you're staying though. The tea bags are sourced from Harney and Sons.

Mathias Longo

Google
The place has a good vibe, good location, and excellent service. Perfect for work. Pastries are also good. Coffee isn't perfect, wouldn't say it's specialty coffee, but it's very good. We asked for a late, which came with a nice latte art, and a macchiato, which has been properly prepared, using only foam on top of the espresso shots.

Google
Great coffee! Delicious and big pastries. Love the wood and rainforest vibe this place gives off. Full of plants and fresh air. The coffee is full bodied and taste great. Blueberry muffin was scrumptious. Loved the decor.

Sling Stoned

Google
Own roasted coffee. Roasted perfection. ALOT OF SEATING. No waiting lines (however was afternoon). Huge pastries. A lot of food options from scratch kitchen. Worth the walk. Unfortunately Fresh squeezed juice bar closed. Hey owners a coffee in a real cup would be a nice touch that not many coffee roasters have in DTLA. See you at some future coffee shows when you share your coffee with the world. Cheers.

Thursday Goals: Hot Latte and Cold Brew and look busy until the weekend gets here. Lol. Without further ado, let’s begin this new review. Silverback Coffee of Rwanda is a coffee shop that offer great coffee and ambiance. Furthermore, it has an inspiring story that you will truly admire. What I like the most about this coffee shop besides their drinks was Jack’s, founder/owner, vision and mission especially for Rwanda and its wildlife. This store is located in Echo Park by Sunset blvd. Also, they have one other store in DTLA’s Art District. I arrived on a sunny morning; I was warmly greeted by one of their female barista. It’s interior infused by Rwanda culture and wildlife. Moreover, it has an exposed brick wall which gave the inside a more prodigious look. It has a wide space (~2,200 sq feet) where one can walk freely without invading other people’s territorial space. I perused their coffee list posted on the wall; they have wide variety of drinks. I ordered the Silver Lining Cold Brew, a Silverback Mocha Hot Latte and a plain croissant. They carry regular (8 oz.), medium (16 oz.) and large (20 oz.) size cup. My Silver Lining Cold Brew was smooth and sweet; Hot Mocha Latte was brewed perfectly and flavorful while their plain croissant was puffy, soft and of modest quality. Service was fast and efficient. Prices were average and competitive for the area. Staff were amiable, competent and followed health protocol. Free Wifi available. Street metered parking and public parking lot were available. Collectively, these make me conclude that I truly enjoyed my experience, drinks and its atmosphere. Overall, I highly recommend this coffee shop and will definitely come back again.

Yelp
love a specialty coffee shop that opens very early! i got a really good iced oatmilk latte and a beautiful view of dtla!

Yelp
I've been to this place since it opened. Started off great. Wonderful decor and I thought it was at a great location. But it feels like the place is slowly but surely ending its run. I don't think they are getting the business traffic they hoped for. They have slowly reduced their menu. Use to have soups, no more soups. Used to have hot food, now I don't believe they serve any hot food- at least not at lunchtime. Too many menu items are out of stock.
google avatar

Min Seung K.

Yelp
Worst matcha I've ever had. Very watery and no matcha flavor. Had to throw it away after my first sip.

Mariezabelle E.

Yelp
Went here with my friends. Coffee tasted great ! We ordered the turkey croissant and it was amazing ! ULY the barista was so nice and friendly. And the ambience is so relaxing in the middle of downtown.
google avatar

A. P.

Yelp
Just not good. They have several items on the menu that I have tried to order but they never have the ingredients to make them. Today I tried to order a green juice as they have several juices on the menu and the clerk told me "we don't make juices." Then why do you have all those juices on your menu??? I've ordered the green juice in the past and that time they were missing two of the ingredients but I gave them a pass at the time. This place is in my building so it's convenient but more often than not I have to walk across she street to get a bite to eat because they are out of this or that. Annoying!
google avatar

Regina P.

Yelp
My FAVORITE place to work remotely. The coffee is great, the staff is nice, cut the chit chat short, and it's always super clean. They have a lot of comfy seating and tables. Almost every seat inside has an outlet nearby. They have a nice patio too. Free Parking, like most areas of DTLA, is basically non existent in the day time, so if you can get there by public transit, use that. The cheapest parking for 1-2 hours is probably the library across the street, you just have to validate it inside the library. I love it. It's usually kind of empty, but I definitely recommend it.
google avatar

Nami A.

Yelp
Fantastic cappuccino and even better service: fast and friendly. Located inside the Gas Company Tower, you would think this coffee shop serves "whatever" coffee to curb the cravings of 9-5 folk who work at the Tower, but you would be very wrong! Like I mentioned, cappuccino slaps and the vanilla oat nitro brew is DELICIOUS. And to top it off, percentage of profits made goes toward organizations that build schools in local areas of Rwanda and provide services to widows and orphans impacted by genocide.
google avatar

Cindi A.

Yelp
Love the service, friendly owner, and amazing coffee! Our favorite is the Jen's Latte

Lune S.

Yelp
Super cute place! Spent an hour talking here because the ambiance was amazing. Cashier and barista were really nice as well!
google avatar

Kyoung K.

Yelp
Def try their stuffed croissants (turkey cheese, ham chesse, and spinach cheese). It's a bit pricey $6.50 but I think it's definitely worth it. It was flakey buttery and tasty lol. I had the spinach one and it'd was a bit spicy but I enjoyed every bits of it. I got some other ones for my coworkers and they too really enjoyed it. We all got full off on 1 croissant. I always pass by to get to the office and have to stop by to grab these. I haven't tried their coffee or other beverages but I look forward to it. Ambiance is nice and chill.
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
The space is really open and welcoming. There was no one there when I stopped in after my physical therapy appointment at around 11 AM. That meant I had no wait to order and my coffee came out incredibly quickly. The blend I got wasn't as smooth as I would have liked but it was still fairly tasty. I would try something else next time.

Vij T.

Yelp
Lovely coffee and lots of comfortable seating! Can't wait to try the food. Friendly staff.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
I've been here multiple times and I'm generally disappointed. Today was the last straw. I paid $16 for a "turkey wrap" that was basically just lettuce with a slice of turkey and two tomato slices in each half.

James M.

Yelp
Coffee was mid, cappuccino was blah, milk was frothed and foamed to hell and back. What else are your options downtown though?
google avatar

Gabriel R.

Yelp
Always enjoy returning to this gem of a spot My go to is the Caramel Latte. So tasty and smooth (sounds as if I'm describing a Scotch ) But so often coffee can taste bitter when ordered from the wrong place. Not the case here. This place is charming has a good vibe and reminds me of some of the New York coffee house's that the "cool cats" hung out in

Martin C.

Yelp
Trying this place for the first time. We bought a turkey/ avocado sandwich and an avocado toast with salmon.. the sandwich, were like home made. Nothing special and the amount of meat was very low. You would think for that price, you might get a sufficient sandwich with meat! But it was very poor prepared! First and last time. $52.00 for 2 sandwiches. Come on!
google avatar

Carlos F.

Yelp
DANGEROUS PLACE! If you value your waistline and beach body, stay away! The pastries are amazing. The raspberry cheese danish and the cinnamon roll created by Chef Brian is out of this world. Their cold brew is one of (if not) the best in LA. The coffee overall is fantastic. The people in the front are also very patient and helpful. If you have a sweet tooth, it'll be hard to decide.

Lorna B.

Yelp
The salads and food are good but the downside is the music. Wow it's not good music, and it's very loud so that it's not a hospitable place to stay while you eat. I keep coming back but almost always take food to go.

Maria M.

Yelp
I am floored at the excellence of my cup of coffee today! I believe it is the best coffee I have ever tasted. The flavor was rich, robust, yet incredibly smooth. The flavor was mildly sweet and spicy. I am returning tomorrow for beans, as well as another cup.
google avatar

Ana L.

Yelp
Asked if it was possible to get a shaken espresso. The associate then proceeded to tell me with a bad attitude "You're going to have to explain to me what a shaken espresso is cause I don't go to Starbucks." I then apologized and asked if I could get an espresso shaken with milk and ice. She then proceeded to go tell the Barista in Spanish and laugh. Not the kind of negativity I was looking for on a lunch break from Jury Duty. The coffee was decent and overpriced.
google avatar

Julianna B.

Yelp
Ample seating, great food and good coffee. I came by echo park to work on some stuff. I chose silverback coffee and all my expectations were met. Their coffee was great, as well as their very large soyrizo burrito. I would come back & try their pastries!

Maria R.

Yelp
This coffee shop has the best coffee in DTLA. The coffee has a unique and fresh taste. Their pastries are delicious and the staff are very friendly. I love the setting, great place to bring a book while enjoying a cup of fresh coffee. I highly recommend it.
google avatar

Brooke R.

Yelp
Stopped off here on the way to a dodge game (I'm not a dodge fan just riding along) and the guy was super helpful with my order. I told him I liked ice coffee and he recommended the cold brew with vanilla. It comes with cream. Very delicious and not to strong. I even got a stamp card. If I ever come back I'll defiantly stop here for more!
google avatar

Kislev A.

Yelp
Silverback Coffee of Rwanda is currently open for business. You can't stay and there's no indoor seating, but don't let that stop you from coming and grabbing your coffee. And what a coffee it was. I had to ask the barista what the difference was between the Flat White and their Latte: The milk for Flat White is less foam and more steamed milk. The coffee itself is interesting. I'm not a coffee expert or anything, but is it just me or there is none of those "citrus" notes or "floral" notes or "caramel notes". I wonder if this is what coffee tastes like without additional flavors like "citrus" and "lavender" and all those added flavors. Kinda earthy. Clean. Also, looking at the bags of beans on the shelves that are on display, I noticed that your choices were light roast, medium roast or dark roast. The coffee was great tasting, clean and simple.

Ryan P.

Yelp
Hands down best coffee i have ever had! Food was amazing and the owner Jack was extremely polite and hospitable!
google avatar

Caroll P.

Yelp
I work in the area & though I have a favored coffee hut + barista close by, I still enjoy venturing down Sunset to try the other local coffee businesses. Today, this place was on my list. However, as I parked, I noticed the bookstore close by has a cafe inside. I was tempted to grab coffee at the bookstore because that just seems right. But there was a young lady sipping Silverback's coffee waiting for her friend right out front of the bookstore. I took a chance and asked her for her thoughts on her coffee & I shared my dilemma on being torn between these two coffee joints. She totally talked me into trying Silverback. So, I walk in, the place is flawlessly clean & aesthetically pleasing to my eyes. The young lady who took my order and charged me (I really wish I took down her name) was super chill, friendly & cool. I really enjoyed this, as my afternoon Latte is a special treat & "me-time" ritual. My latte was ready pretty quickly. It was beautiful & frothy, just how I like them. I had to snap this photo given the elements of the store & this delectable Latte. YES- the Latte delivered in taste & quality. Based off of all of these factors, I will definitely make stops here regularly, when I'm in the area!
google avatar

Katelyn V.

Yelp
My coworkers and I love grabbing our morning (and occasional afternoon) coffee here! The staff are always so welcoming and will help you decide what to order if requested. Don't forget to try something from the food menu! There are great options and large portions. (:
google avatar

Baneen N.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place while walking downtown and happened to be there on their first day open! The place has a great vibe and plenty of space. The cookie we got was delicious, and the silverback caramel latte was SO smooth. Smooth enough that I had to try the straight espresso afterward. I was hoping for Portuguese-level smoothness for the espresso, but it still had a bit of a sour bite. They have food options too for lunch. Staff members were super friendly despite our endless questions. If today wasn't our last day downtown, we'd be back to try more from the menu!
google avatar

Rick H.

Yelp
Very nice hidden place . Good vibes. Will come back to his location . Nice place to just relax and enjoy this vibe
google avatar

Yelp
If you're looking for really good coffee, Silverback Coffee of Rwanda is a must. Since living a quarantined lifestyle, I'm grinding my own beans and brewing coffee at home more. I have bought a few different brands, and none of them compare to Silverback Coffee. I used to put a lot of creamer and sugar in my coffee (don't judge!!!) but honestly this coffee doesn't require it. The coffee is aromatic, smooth, and a pleasure to drink. I had an opportunity to visit this location in Echo Park. The staff were kind, pleasant, and helpful. I ordered a cappuccino and a piece of coffee cake. Although we were unable to eat inside due to covid, my husband and I sat outside briefly to enjoy and appreciate our coffee and pastry. Before leaving, we had an opportunity to catch up with the owner/CEO Jack Karaletwa. Jack used to coach our daughter's basketball team some years ago. He approaches his business the same way he does his players. With compassion, care, humbleness, enthusiasm, and appreciation. I highly recommend picking up a coffee to go, or if you can't make it by the coffee shop, order a bag online. You will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Mel B.

Yelp
I'm always looking for a great salad or sandwich for lunch near the office in downtown LA, and Silverback did not disappoint! The Cobb salad was beautifully put together with generous portions of bacon, chicken, egg, and blue cheese. Mine was ordered without tomato, but if that's your jam, I'm sure they'd be great on this salad as well. The staff was pleasant and helpful and the place was nice and clean. But what impressed me most was how affordable it was. There aren't many places in LA where you can get lunch for less than twenty bucks anymore, and my salad was a reasonable $15, including tax. I will definitely be back to try more items from the breakfast and lunch menu!
google avatar

Shaniek D.

Yelp
Anywhere I can find a lavender latte in LA with multiple vegan milk chooses is always a win for me. The music is a vibe, it's big spacious and cozy and they have an awesome drink menu. I'd highly recommend this place!!
google avatar

Jason R.

Yelp
Just had the best iced coffee I've had in a LONG time. Cool spot in DTLA just down the street from The Broad. Wide open space with outdoor seating in front and back and lots of room inside. The pastries looked amazing but didn't try any... this time. The owner gives back to his home country of Rwanda to help both the people and the mountain gorillas so their philanthropy is as good as their coffee!

Curv C.

Yelp
UNSANITARY AND HEALTH HAZARD! I ordered a decaf rose latte with oat milk for me and a regular latte with oat milk for my coworker. I took a sip of mine and didn't taste any rose, so I requested a remake of my rose latte. I also tasted regular milk instead of oat milk. The barista appeared distracted and poured dairy milk into a silver cup and began to steam it. He almost repeated his mistake, and when I informed him, he poured the dairy milk back into the milk jug. This seems unsanitary and I am concerned that basic hygiene was not being applied. Is this reflective of Silverback Coffee's health policies? My coworker also confirmed that what he got wasn't oat milk. Why charge extra for dairy free options if you're not going to accommodate for customers' dietary needs? We are both lactose intolerant, which is actually a medical condition.

Aline B.

Yelp
Delicious, attentive and so kind. In this downtown LA area where most breakfast/lunch food places are gone, Silverback Coffee of Rwanda is an excellent choice. Up on Bunker Hill this place is great. Karen at the front greets you like a friend, offered delicious food options, like the avocado toast I just engulfed which is made on the yummiest bread and washed it down with a lovely cappuccino! Gotta try this place. It is great ..you wont be sorry to try them out! Bye...Breakfast burrito is calling me...

Yelp
This is my new favorite coffee/lounge spot. Perfect location, great service, fresh pastries and delicious coffee. I had a Vanilla Bean Latte and a cheese danish. The environment is really chill and they have some cool merch as well. Do yourself a favor and stop by and feel the vibe.
google avatar

Nubia O.

Yelp
This place is one of my favorites coffee shops here in Echo Park. They don't only have delicious coffee, teas, drinks and pastries; but a nice space to work or study at. Also the help they give to people and gorillas in Rwanda is amazing! A certain percentage of their sales go to a foundation that help kids who are the product of violent acts and their mothers to continue with their lives. Plus they help the wildlife and more over there. I wish more businesses would chose to help people in countries in need so it's nice to support businesses with a purpose like this one. Drink menu is very extense but the people working here are very nice at recommending you stuff according to what you like. I've had mostly their lattes with whole milk but they do have other substitutions. My favorites so far have been their peppermint latte and the gorilla eye which is espresso shot in water. Street parking and paid lot on rear.

Yelp
I've been here sooooo many times and never had a bad experience. However today whoever closed was the most rude person I've ever encountered in customer service EVER- from literally anywhere I've ever been to. I usually come earlier in the morning so I genuinely had no idea that it closes at 1PM. I was coming to just buy a friend who also loves this place a gift card - and was met by some tan guy in a bandana yelling to get out. He wouldn't even let me get a complete sentence out. Just kept yelling to get out. He could have just been normal and said they're closed. When I left I checked the hours/time and it had only been 4 minutes since they closed. He acted like I showed up an hour later and was demanding to be served. It was just very unnecessary and bizarre.
google avatar

Matthew M.

Yelp
One of the worst pour overs I've ever had, especially for the high price. I like the large space and ambiance here but wouldn't come back.
google avatar

Alexa G.

Yelp
I had amazing time, the coffee was phenomenal and the customer service A1. I would definitely recommend this coffee shop.

Yelp
I love this coffee place, they just have the best of everything from breakfast menu, bakery, the staff are awesome the atmosphere is chill and the drinks are so great, the nitro vanilla oat cold brew is the best way to get the day started love this place.

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
Obsessed with this new addition to DTLA. Great spot to meet with people, work since they have a huge seating area. Coffee and service is amazing.

Olivia T.

Yelp
I tried the iced caramel latte and it was delicious. Really nice employees. Would definitely recommend.
google avatar

Hakima H.

Yelp
delicious coffee and friendly staff! my friend and i ordered the rose latte and jen's latte and it was the perfect pre hike energy boost that we needed. i'll definitely be back especially since they have so many different types of coffees and teas on their menu! :) we got there around 8:30 on a saturday and there was plenty of street parking and seating available.
google avatar

Tara J.

Yelp
Such a beautiful coffee shop right in the heart of Echo Park. Here you can get premium Rwandan coffee blends and a great ambiance as well. Great service and reasonable prices. I feel like this place is the perfect hidden gem on this side of town.
google avatar

Regina Q.

Yelp
Had a bad experience just know there. I ordered a bagel + lox to eat on the seat outside because of COVID, and the guy gave me the bagel with lox and all the other ingredients in plastic containers, and I had to prepare the sandwich on my own without a knife or a plate because they didn't included it. When I went to ask if I could have a plate and knife to finish making the sandwich, the employees were both without masks inside the store talking around a tall table full of food. After seeing that I just felt like going home. Besides not covering their faces inside the coffee store, all the cups, straws, to-go box containers are not eco-friendly, and it was just a bunch of plastic. Disappointing.

Yelp
[COVID-19] Hours: 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM Parking: Street Available for take out and outdoor seating This coffee shop replaces the Blue Bottle that was here before it. It's a beautiful spacious coffee shop. Easy to social distance inside. The VANILLA OAT NITRO COLD BREW ($6) did not disappoint. Picked up a bag of beans which were more affordable than other coffee shops in the area. Looking forward to coming back and trying more of their speciality drinks.
