"Set on the water in Rockaway, this Thai spot pairs flavorful seafood-centric dishes, Thai teas, and tropical cocktails with scenic views in a nautical room of wooden beams and soft blue booths, plus a full bar pouring colorful drinks in fish-shaped glassware; it’s open daily from noon to 10:30 p.m." - Nadia Chaudhury

Similan On The Bay - Review - Rockaway Beach - New York - The Infatuation

"Right on the water in The Rockaways, Similan On The Bay is a Thai restaurant in the old Thai Rock space, which closed in August of last year. Though the space remains the same, the new owners are launching with a new menu and a renovated space, complete with seashell-shaped barstools and miniature ships surrounding the dining room. Put it on your list for some post-beach pad see ew." - Willa Moore

I had an amazing experience at Similan on the Bay. The restaurant is beautifully designed with a warm, modern atmosphere, chic teal booths, stylish bar seating, and cozy outdoor tables overlooking the water. The views are absolutely spectacular, especially at sunset. The staff was exceptional. Mia and the rest of the team were so attentive and welcoming. Service was prompt, and friendly. The food was delicious. Combined with the ambiance and service, it was a very pleasant experience. Definitely recommend stopping by.

I had a fantastic dining experience at Similan on the Bay in Rockaway Beach. This spot offers a wide variety of Thai seafood dishes that truly impressed me. The standout for me was the whole fried fish Pla Lui Suan—perfectly crispy on the outside and full of flavor inside. The Mangosteen Salad was another must-try, refreshing and unique. I also tried several other dishes, including the Crab Fried Rice, Crying Tiger beef, Tom Yum Hotpot, and Grilled Squid—and none of them disappointed. Everything was well-seasoned, fresh, and beautifully presented. Another plus is their full bar, so you can enjoy cocktails or mocktails while taking in the gorgeous bay view. The atmosphere is one of the best parts—being able to see the water and the bridge makes the meal feel extra special, and at night the view becomes absolutely stunning. Highly recommend this place if you’re looking for authentic Thai flavors with a scenic, relaxing setting.

I can see why this place has 4.9 in ratings! It's only been open for a couple of months I was told, and I was very impressed. First off, my server, Christa, was so attentive and recommended the best, most authentic Thai dishes, which were the mangosteen salad and the Goong Karee (curry prawns). The flavors were incredible and so tasty! For dessert, I mentioned in passing it was my birthday and they came out singing and a candle with the banana coconut cake I ordered, which was delicious as well! The atmosphere is great as well. Stylish and warm and spacious. This would be a great spot for a date, but also a big group celebration. At the moment, they've got halloween decorations up to add to the festive vibe. The only thing that makes me sad is that I live far! I will definitely find time to come back here though - there are more items on the menu that I'm dying to try!

Everything about the new Thai restaurant Screams Delightful! From the moment you walk in, you are welcome by a wonderful host who sit you out on the beautiful back deck over looking the bay.. Everything in the restaurant was Recently redone: It’s definitely an elevated experience! The food has to be some of the best Thai food I have ever had! Ten out of ten for everything! We got a couple of our regular dishes and some great suggestions from our Waitress Puefei. She was very knowledgeable with the menu. She took her time to explain things. With her suggestions, we were able to try a few new dishes that we were very pleased with! I also like to add the atmosphere was very calm and relaxing. The music was nice and it wasn’t too loud. We were able to talk and enjoy our dinner. This place is a great vibe. We will definitely be back what a great and so much needed addition to the neighborhood!!

Eufai our server was very pleasant and very knowledgeable about the menu, as well as, the story behind the name of the resturant. My appetizers where delish, however., my fish entree was a bit dry and under seasoned. The presentation was nice plus I was pleased wirh my portion. My wife pleased with her meal as well. We both brought food home with us.

First time dining here, and I was completely blown away. As an island girl who grew up dining near the ocean in the Caribbean, this place instantly took me back. The atmosphere was spectacular—stunning views, beautiful décor, and the perfect setting. The food was incredible! I had the curry coconut scallops, which were absolutely delicious. Our group of 20+ was well taken care of—the staff was attentive, friendly, and efficient. Orders came out quickly and exactly as requested. The restaurant was clean, the music set the right mood without being overwhelming, and everyone in our group had a wonderful time. Thank you for your warm hospitality. We will definitely be back!

Only a month and a week old, my husband and I decided to have lunch at Similan on the bay. What a beautiful restaurant. Everyone was so pleasant and happy to see us. We had the lunch special which included an appetizer, soup/salad and an entree. My husband ordered the fried dumplings, coconut based chicken soup (I’m sorry I forgot the name) and the Crying tiger entree. I ordered the scallion pancakes, salad and the crab refried rice. Everything was absolutely delicious. Hot and fresh and came to our table quickly. My husband ordered a strawberry lemonade. He enjoyed the lemonade so much he ordered a second one. We sat out on the patio which was such a pleasant experience. What a beautiful day. We are definitely coming back for sure. What a lovely afternoon

Amazing! I came here to celebrate my birthday and I had an awesome time there. The food was really good the drinks were really good as well. Our server was really sweet. Recommend getting a patio seat before summer ends.

Yelp
First time we went service and food was truly delicious and all the staff were very welcoming. Second visit hostess barely looked up or interacted with us just brought us to the table and left. Our waitress was wearing a hat with a political statement that we found offensive. Hope these issues are addressed so we can feel comfortable going there again. I also feel if the waitresses are wearing hats it should have the restaurants logo not sports teams or political statements.

Yelp
Wife and I just had dinner at Similan's on the bay and we had a very nice experience. Appetizer that we had were the calamari which is served a little differently, but very tasty and hot and we also had the Thai pancakes which were crispy on the outside moist and flavorful inside so they were great as well. My wife had the Masiman curry shrimp, and I had the crispy Bonita with mango sauce and it was delicious. Great addition to the Neighbourhood looking forward to going back Thank you very much William, (the proprietor) for a great night out.

Yelp
We had a reservation for 7 PM and placed our order at 7:10. Unfortunately, the service was extremely slow. Our appetizers (beef skewers and dumplings) didn't arrive until about 35-40 minutes later, and the entrées followed just 10 minutes after that. The food itself was very disappointing. The entrées lacked flavor and spice, and the seafood was not properly cleaned--it smelled unpleasant and was completely inedible. To make matters worse, a family member ended up with food poisoning afterward. The service was equally poor. Our server was rude and, instead of acknowledging the birthday we had noted in the reservation, simply shoved the bill at us without offering dessert. When we raised this with management, they dismissed it as a "system glitch" and had no response when I asked why desserts aren't offered regardless. The only positive aspect was the drinks, which were good. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough to make up for the long waits, overcrowded atmosphere, bland and unsafe food, and unprofessional service. Overall: I would not return and do not recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Housed in the former Thai Rock location, we were never satisfied with the food at the former - it seemed too bland and not "Thai-enough". So when we heard another thai spot was opening, we were praying that it would be more authentic and save us from driving to Williamsburg/Greenpoint/Manhattan for Thai Food runs. We were so pleasantly surprised with Similan on the Bay!!! Their crying tiger steak was on point; duck curry was crispy and flavorful and their scallop curry with grilled scallops was so much better than the one we had at FishcheeksWilliamsburg ... It was a busy Friday evening with live music (though a bit on the loud side) the staff was very attentive + helped make our night out a success Thank you! We can't wait to go back

Yelp
The ambiance in this restaurant is peaceful and magical, the view is unique and the inside dining area is equally as beautiful as the outside dining area. My boyfriend and I sat at the bar for a quick meal before the ferry came and we loved it, the bartender was very nice and my drink was so tasty. The food was also really delicious and beautifully prepared. Everyone was very nice and accommodating I can't wait to come back and spend more time at this special gem.

Yelp
Easily the best Thai place we've ever eaten. Authentic, delicious food, and our waiter Jack was there almost all the time. The atmosphere was quietly elegant and completely enjoyable. But above all, come for the food.

Yelp
Food was horrible overpriced I ordered a dish and they said they could not make it without the sauce in it why they could not do that I don't know all the dishes are made to order the service was horrible as well brought the apps over before the drinks and the waitress kept pushing more drinks and food to up the bill so she can get a better tip which was included in the bill so that would explain why she did not pay much attention to us it was better when it was Thai rock

Yelp
I have to make an update to a previous review. We spoke to the owner about our few concerns and they were addressed immediately. Can't say enough good things about the staff, food, service and ambience. We have been here four times in the last two weeks with every meal being something truly delicious and authentic tasting. Duck curry, Thai dumplings, soft shell crabs, chive pancakes, mock duck pad see ew; I could go on and on. Don't miss this place! Worth a trip from anywhere!
