The 18 Best Coffee Shops In San Francisco

"At Simple Pleasures Cafe, you wouldn’t blink twice if you saw a neighborhood book club plopping down on the back couches or staff greeting long-time regulars by name. The coffee shop is a feel-good, all-day gathering spot in the Richmond—even if you just come in for a quick cappuccino, don’t be surprised if you end up staying for hours with a good book by the big windows. In terms of the actual menu, there are hearty cafe staples like bagels and paninis, and a straightforward list of espresso drinks served in to-go cups." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez, patrick wong

Best Dog-Friendly Bars and Restaurants in San Francisco | Eater SF

"In the Outer Richmond Simple Pleasures Cafe keeps large parties buzzing with a big parklet suited for groups of any size — including any amount of animals. The neighborhood institution has served the city since 1978 and, while it’s well-lit parklet is much newer, longtime residents need no instruction to get their morning fix on Balboa Street." - Dianne de Guzman

Google
You can tell this is a community gathering place. Very laid back and people knew each other. We were not content with our order. ,we wanted two single orders of espresso and getting one shot divided into two demitasses was not cool. First cup had the froth and filled 3/4 th of the way. Second cup had no froth and filled 1/4 of the way. Plus it was cold. Very disappointed. If you are familiar with how espresso should be served and want a hot shot of it, this is not the place.

Google
The best chai late i have ever had. Would Travel to San Francisco just for that 💜kind service too. Also there was a sticker i liked, so i got it tattoeed so i can be reminded everyday how i love it there and the time i spent in San Fran.💜

Google
Simple Pleasures is a mainstay in the Outer Richmond. The roast their own coffee, their vanilla iced lattes are my personal favorite, baked goods are so good, the space is great so you can chill or work, they have an outdoor parklette, and they serve beer later in the day. I love this place.

Google
Simple Pleasures is the best— always has been, always will be. An Outer Rich force of nature. Excellent espresso drinks & a great London Fog, phew. Beers. Baked goods, phenomenal. Everything a person could need. Best place to sit and chat. We love you, Simple Pleasures!

Google
Great coffee ☕️ and food is delicious. I was here every morning and afternoon during my stay in San Francisco and would recommend to anyone looking for great coffee, food and a really chill atmosphere to relax and or meet some really cool locals to learn some history about SF, Thanks Mike and Jon 😊

Google
Good coffee & excellent breakfast cookies (Egyptian shortbread is out of this world as is the almond cake from Dianda’s). Fresh bagels from House of Bagels but I didn't see any plant based cream cheese. The chai is A++ as is the service. Love their dining room; a nice throwback, friendly neighborhood cafe.

Google
This cozy cafe is a community favorite and is always busy. There is both indoor and outdoor seating bit I prefer to sit inside since Balboa is windy most of the time. Their hot sandwiches are really good and unique. I definitely did not expect the jalapeno in there. The dutch crunch is best enjoyed when the bread is still crunchy. Their pastries are also really good though they are kind of pricey. Wish they put the names and prices of their pastries up front.

Google
Simple Pleasures offers a very classic Richmond district cafe experience - multitude of pastry/protein bar/snack options with a wide array of coffee & food options as well (mostly sandwiches). The vibes in here are great, it’s longer than you’d think and plenty of space to work. Musician came in and played very relaxed music. Also a slight warning! There’s a simple pleasures coffee roasters that comes before it but that’s not this one. We got confused!

Yelp
Food and coffee are great, service is laid back and friendly, all in a very homey decor.

Yelp
Decided to not gate keep this place any longer- I ran in here before Outside lands a year ago to use their bathroom and get a pre-festival snack and boy was I blown away. Such a cozy experience and now make it a mandatory pit stop on my walks through the avenues. Great pastries and area to work or catch up with a friend. Has a college vibe yet also a place to find older generations reading ewspaper. Friendly service too & love the bulletin wall with events.

Yelp
I had a great tuna sandwich today on 9-grain bread filled with lots of yummy goodness, healthy and mmmm good!

Yelp
An Outer Richmond gem, Simple Pleasures has been a mainstay since 1978, offering coffee, sandwiches, bagels and pastries. We ordered drinks and a sun-dried tomato pesto cream cheese bagel, which was delicious! Prices are very affordable and there are many regulars in the crowd of customers! It's a small bustling warm and friendly spot worth stopping by if you're in the hood.

Yelp
First time visiting and this is a great local spot. I would give the latte and the overall vibe of the cafe a 5, but the croissant a 3 (personal preference). The croissant was very large but not as flaky as I tend to like them. I think in the future I might try them for lunch, since they had beers and other drinks on tap that would make a pleasant afternoon.

Yelp
If you're in the city looking for a good latte that isn't over powered by the cream then this is the spot. My go to order is a large iced vanilla latte with an extra pump of sweetener. Comes out to just under $7 and it is worth every penny. The carrot cake was pretty good as well. Overall it's a great little cafe to come and hang out in or grab something quick to go.

Yelp
They're only open until 9pm now? Back in the mid-'90s, I used to visit this cafe every couple of weeks, and drink beer 'til the wee hours (way after 9pm!). And then afterwards stand outside like a goof waiting for a bus after midnight! I lived on 16th and Geary at the time, was in the SF State writing program, and all by myself in San Francisco. Taking a bus from Geary to Simple Pleasures was a fun night out for me. I'd start out writing/reading, then as the night went on, I'd meet a lot of people there to converse with.

Yelp
Neighborhood coffee shop. Comfortable, friendly. With a few tables and a park-let outside.

Yelp
I stopped in for the first time today with a friend and had a great experience. It's a charming cafe with lots of character with seating inside as well as a lot of spots to sit outside. I had a London Fog which was delicious and a sesame bagel with sun dried tomato cream cheese and veggies. It was toasted and very good! Veggies included olives, onions, lettuce, tomato. My friend enjoyed her coffee and bacon egg and cheese bagel. Staff was super friendly and they take credit card. Perfect way to start the morning and not far to walk to the ocean!

Yelp
Fantastic Lil throwback coffee shop with fresh pastries bagels and sandos to please everyone's appetite. Nice selection of craft beers and wine for your afternoon thirst quenching provided in a hip artistic environment. Serving locals and explorers like me since 1978. Stay hungry, my friends! Mangia

Yelp
Been going here since the 1980's. Lovely cafe that feels like a comfortable living room. I hope it never changes, so many fond memories!

This place is an absolute gem. timeless, affordable, all ages, community center. I hope it stays open for a long, long time.

Yelp
It's not as easy to find a chagaccino as I wish it was. This place has them and they're not too far from my job so it made me happy to find them. Nice place, nice people, nice options.

Yelp
Just order a sandwich and the sandwich maker went from washing dishes to making my sandwich without gloves. Highly unsanitary

Yelp
It was my first time here . This place is awesome. You can sit in this cafe and just look at the walls and take pictures. There are lots of pictures and posters and arts from years and years ago hanging all over the place . I loved it not because of their drinks and pastries but just because of its atmosphere. I ordered a Chagaccino ( which was ok ) and it was my first time trying it and I ordered one of their pastries. Employees were nice and friendly. I will definitely go back .

Yelp
2023 being my maximist era, this café has checkered floors, random walk art, posters from eras ago. I'm getting teary eyed. I stopped by on a Friday morning, and it was mildly popping. Enough for a low chatter but not loud enough to not be able to read or study in their back room. Lots of seating on a Friday at 7:00 AM. The staff is friendly without being overly chattery (I guess that's important for me?) Drinks range between $3-5. Alt milk is extra. Bagels range between $3-7. They serve sandwiches and alcoholic drinks as well. I got a london fog which was made just right and very hot. It wasn't very sweet, so if you have a sweet tooth I'd ask for extra syrup. As others said, the hours are for the early birds and post-dinner coffee drinkers (me).

Yelp
both the lox bagel and latte were delicious. the cafe is cozy and there is plenty of seating, wi-fi, and outlets; it's an ideal space to work remotely, chat, or simply parallel play. there's a shelf full of games, books, and nat geo magazines. as you can see my friend and i made ourselves at home.... workers were friendly. love it when a cafe as a neighborhood bulletin board. bathroom is quite small, but has everything you need will definitely come back the next time i come to sf xo

Yelp
How SF Cafe's use to be in 80's & 90's Super bohemian vibes and kind people of all walks of life. We came out here after our Seacliff Ocean Beach walk. Loved my Chagaccino and Gluten Free Pastry. Best when foggy. Oh Huge: They are open from 6am- 9pm! Great place to hang out. They also serve cold beer! Oh I just noticed peeps have one hiccup they write a one star review and take things so personal. This is a legacy SF place roasting beans since 1978 and going nowhere. Staff super nice to ALL. Enjoy! Coffee shops= Happiness. This was a pleasure. We will be back.

Yelp
I moved to the Outer Richmond a little over a year ago and have been coming to Simple Pleasures several times a week since then. The staff are friendly, service is fast, and they have an impressive range of food and drinks. I personally love their Chai -- unlike other Chais that are more sweet than anything else, theirs is well-spiced and so good. More than that, they aren't just a cafe -- they're a community hub. They host weekly Open Mic and monthly Trivia Nights (special shoutout to MC Rick!). It's always a fun time and a great way to meet neighbors and make new friends, plus their trivia prizes are almost exclusively merch/gift cards for other local businesses -- it's just so special and just really highlights their commitment to uplifting the community. If you're ever in the area, do yourself a favor and check them out! They are truly a local gem.

Yelp
7 or 8 years ago, this place was a nice neighborhood cafe to have a coffee, have a breakfast, and hang around. Now they are not the same. Last Saturday morning, I went there and ordered cream cheese and veggies with cinnamon and raisin bagel to go. I waited for 11 other customers for a barista to start my bagel. I thought about canceling my order. Thank God, 11th customer who was white male ordered bagel as well. Right away, one of the female baristas started his bagel and mine. What does this mean for you? When I brought back the bagel at home, cream cheese was not really there and the bagel was not even cinnamon and raisin. Bad customer service, wrong order, terrible execution. I suspect that racial issues are going on this place. But if you're white, you'll be fine. You'll have a good time, keep support them.

Yelp
March 2022 update... Perhaps it is time to paint the bathroom? I prefer the lattes but time sometimes only allows for drip coffee...the drip is often served how shall I say 'not hot' since by the time they slosh the water into the pour over and into the cup and add cream it has cooled off...I like pour over fine but I like hot coffee served hot even more. The outside seating area is pretty darned good even on cold mornings which are typical on 35th and Balboa.

Yelp
My wife and I were booked to perform on the first ever comedy show at Simple Pleasures Coffee. It was ourfirst time there, and the place is awesome. First and foremost the staff is super friendly and welcoming, great art and decor, free wifi but here's the kicker I ordered an iced carmel latte with soy and it may very well have been the most delicious (and most beautiful) cup if coffee in my life. Come out for the coffee and stay for the comedy. I've never said this before but I wish I could give them six stars.
google avatar

Yelp
Come for the free wifi, stay for the tunes. I love this cafe. It's a great spot to work from and get a bite or a drink. I also love the music they play. It's a very nice and friendly neighborhood spot with very welcoming staff. They have some board games inside as well which I appreciate if you want to come here with friends. I could easily spend hours here.

Yelp
Stopped by this little bagel and coffee shop the other morning looking for an easy breakfast option, this was the only place open during this current pandemic environment. The place is small but markers and social spacing is enforced, face covers are required. All of the staff are covered and gloved as well. This new odd normal has definitely and obviously changed this business. No longer is inside seating allowed, and the outside has been paired down to just the built in wooden benches and a singular table. The line moved quickly, my order taker friendly and kind, a large cup of coffee and a scrambled egg with cheese and bacon bagel. I paid, got my cup of java and went back outside to wait for my breakfast sandwich. It may have taken a bit longer than normal? But all considering and the fact that after driving and looking for blocks for anything open, I take it! I can not stress how impacted this neighborhood has been effected by the shut down and now current environment. My coffee was strong and hot just the way I like it and my poppy seed bagel sandwich was as well, and it definitely served its purpose for nurishment the morning of my visit. 3.5 Stars - Rounded up for being open and a good cup of coffee when everybody else was closed 00704

Jeff ..

Yelp
Such a great energy in the place, very welcoming and warm. The service is attentive and caring, and the food and coffee does me just fine!
google avatar

Paula C.

Yelp
Just popped in here early Monday for a hot coffee. They had some nice background jazz music playing over the speakers and cozy little seating areas for everyone. I got a cafe mocha, which was essentially a fancy hot chocolate with coffee in it but oh man it was good and frothy. I can say it was intentionally made with care. We were on our way out but definitely could have spent some time in this loungey cafe, we were really feeling the vibe of the cafe. Definitely check this place out.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here to do stand up. They had one guy named Virgil play the whole time and leave no time for comics. It is super disrespectful. I talked to them on the phone, told me I was good to go. I asked to go after Virgil they said they were shutting down and they threatened to call the doll. Ridiculous. Gain some respect for the comics.

Yelp
This is very cozy community coffee. I often take my friends and clients here for meeting. The services are great and friendly. I don't drink coffee I normally have tea and sandwiches and they are very good so far. Check it out for yourself. Enjoy

Greg C.

Yelp
Everything about simple pleasures is incredible! From the food to ambiance, these owners know how to make a perfect cafe!

Kari V.

Yelp
Very cute cafe with indoor and outdoor sitting! Coffee and sandwiches are great!!! Big plus is they're open till late in the evening.

Isha B.

Yelp
Unassuming but charming neighborhood spot. Friendly clientele - I live in the neighborhood and like that it's all locals like me. Hidden gem for chill outdoor happy hour. Fieldwork IPA on draft! and a public parklet with sunset views down Balboa on a nice day
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
Great place to stop by to pick up a sandwich or a coffee. It's definitely a local neighborhood spot so you'll meet friends in the neighborhood as well. The veggie sandwich good and so are the other offerings. Food comes out pretty quick too! They have mic night events and you can also study or get some work done.
google avatar

Joseph A.

Yelp
I like a rich roast , and Simple Pleasures delivers that. A Coffee House that's been around for Decades , and has only gotten better through time , is a reason to add a stop along Balboa as a part of a morning routine. Looking forward to lounging inside or at the Parklet again, but in the mean time I will settle on a Rich cup of Coffee in semi solitude.
google avatar

Isabel L.

Yelp
Cozy little cafe that truly does live up to its name. It's certainly no frills inside, the interior and furniture are pretty old but so cozy and filled with old photos and what seems to be longtime customers. A great little spot to hide from the cold / enjoy a hot drink with a friend or by yourself!

dan w.

Yelp
I bought a pound of expresso bean coffee from the young woman at the counter. Got home to find out it is regular coffee beans. Not expresso beans. No good!
google avatar

Ron S.

Yelp
Great service, excellent menu, awesome Coffee, wonderful pastries and bagels, friendly atmosphere , great neighborhood Cafe, near Ocean Beach!

Eric O.

Yelp
Simple Pleasures Cafe serves amazing quality drinks and is a wonderful atmosphere to spend an evening (0: I've been avoiding this place like the plague due to the presence of a walrus-esque, odious patron named Bill that used to frequent the joint; but I've heard he's kicked rocks, and I can't wait to return for some hot Java and good vibes!

Liyi D.

Yelp
I have been to this cafe for a couple of times when I was in the area. This is such a lively hangout place in this neighborhood. It feels that everyone knows each other. Service is always friendly. Please note to get there early if you are craving for a bagel. They certainly get sold out fast. Overall it's a good casual spot for a cup of coffee.
google avatar

Jeewon L.

Yelp
I REALLY don't recommend this cafe. The coffee is bad. The owner is an incredibly rude person (was honestly shocked by this!). Many other reviews seem to point to the owners or staff being very rude, too. I just had to share this publicly.

Nick M.

Yelp
We called ahead and asked to do stand up. They td us we are welcome to come and do stand up. After the person (who may have stake in ownership) played, they said it was over and none of my friends nor me could play. We ordered food and drinks before. The food was terrible and the the drinks were tap so were fine. But go to this place at your own risk. Not worth it. Go somewhere else.

Thomas J.

Yelp
Absolute mess. Owners are rude and condescending. If you want to have a fun time in the city, do not go here

Kat G.

Yelp
Amber loves coming here once a week. They make her a special sandwich. Thank you for being the best . Ps. Great coffee too

HB H.

Yelp
Edit: Multiple reviewers here have mentioned racial discrimination. As a foreigner but not a person of color, I can't comment, but I've certainly was made to feel very unwelcome by their staff. I suspect they only prefer one type of patron: White hipster. If you're not anything like that, then they treat you like earwax. Ok, my review: Place is physically dirty and cramped. Pastries are old. Coffee is overextracted. All of that I'd forgive except some of the more recent hired staff are shockingly unbelievably rude. This is a place for the same ten locals to hang out. If you're not a certain type of local, they treat you like dirt. No matter how well you tip, or how often to you patronize their place. It's not a public facing establishment, it's more like a hang joint for some clique and the food and service just happen to be there out of force of habit. Two blocks further west on the south side of the street there's another cafe with more sane operations and more broadminded attitudes towards people of all backgrounds. They close at 5 and Simple Pleasures stays open later. That's the only reason why I kept going to Simple Pleasures, but after a most recent insult, I give up. Scrrrw this place, i'll brew my own coffee from now on.

Jackeline V.

Yelp
regular up until yesterday. my sisters and i have been coming here since high school with the same order multiple times a week for years now. yesterday there were new employees we'd never seen before. (younger girls) they only looked our way without bothering to even take our order. the nice older lady noticed and helped us. our order: 3 salami sandwiches on ciabatta no olives or mustard. we usually dine in but were running late so we left. once we arrived to our destination all of our sandwiches had MUSTARD and NO MAYO. we were too far and late to go back so we didn't but it truly is a shame after being long time customers. listen to the reviews and stay away if you're not white.
google avatar

Jonathan C.

Yelp
One of the best mochas I've had in a while. Good amount of chocolate, just right on the sweetness level. You can adjust the sweetness on your own as well. Loved the outdoor seating in front.
google avatar

Natalie R.

Yelp
The. Best. Single brewed coffee in the west side of San Fran. They have great beans. Great attention to brewing so if you are a coffee snob you can NOT go wrong. If you are wanting 5 star service you really can't complain. This is not that type of place. They also have a limited but exceptional selection of draft beers (who doesn't like sculpin?) and wine and food too which is also worth trying. Sitting out front is nice too and they have the space.
google avatar

Sophia V.

Yelp
As other people have said, service is lacking in this coffee shop and they really know how to make you feel uncomfortable ordering anything. I've been here a couple of times and they never fail to mess up my order. I'd go elsewhere. And yes, I've also experienced them serve other, ahem, patrons first.
