Where to Find the Best Tamales in Los Angeles

"Head to South Gate, in one of LA’s local Sinaloan communities, for the simple pleasures of sweet buttery corn tamales, beloved by Sinaloans all over Los Angeles. Tamales are not its specialty, but the limited offerings are well made, including a pork tamal in red sauce with green olives and potatoes if you’re looking for tamales out of the ordinary." - Bill Esparza

The 17 Best Sinaloan Restaurants in Los Angeles - Eater LA

"You can’t go wrong with the guisos here like barbacoa estilo Sinaloa, beef and potato marinated in adobo that melts into a stew that’s slowly braised until the meat is fork tender. Scoop up a perfect bite into a corn tortilla spread with rich frijoles puercos and sopa fría (macaroni salad). Caldo de cazuela, a beef and vegetable stew simmered in beef stock and red chiles, is home cooking at its best. The full breakfast menu includes a generous plate of crispy chilaquiles, red or green, with fried eggs and beans. Whether comforting antojitos, seafood, or weekend menudo, the menu is all things to all Sinaloenses." - Bill Esparza

Stop by to try the traditional dishes from Sinaloa, and was not disappointed. Everything was very good and the agua de cebada was perfect.

TaQoya Branscomb

Google
My favorite Mexican restaurant in Alhambra LA. I’ve eaten here over a dozen times and I always get the perch with beans and rice! This is a cute little family run restaurant with an outside patio. I always order my food and grab a coffee next door while I wait. Even the side salad they give you is truly tasty, with the addition of pickled onions and avocado!🤤

Google
This place used to be better but the food now sucks and is expensive. They also charge you for to go containers! Never have I ever been charged for a food container which by the way sucked! Cause it’s made out of paper and it’s not adequate for a caldo!

Google
Shredded beef tostadas are epic! Very authentic.

Google
🇲🇽 SINALOA MÉXICO (via Eat the World Los Angeles) - Before your orders arrive, a squeeze bottle of crema shows up at the table with your utensils and a housemade red salsa. Crema lovers will be very happy with this arrangement, as anything from the chilorio you throw in freshly made corn tortillas to sides of fries or fresh seafood can be improved with as much as desired.

Google
Plenty of parking in the back... was sitted quickly. Big portions of food given. Handmade corn tortillas. Everything tasted good. Chips n salsa given.

Google
Great food, nice outdoor patio that had a good breeze, excellent tortillas, the salsa verde was my favorite of the hot sauces

Google
Must try the White Menudo. Super Delicious 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Yelp
They have parking space on the back. I walked in and was sitted fast. Sever was nice. Chips and salsa are given out of curtesy. Food portion was big. Tasty breakfast. Homemade corn tortillas. Alot of sitting available.

Yelp
I don't think I have had anything I didn't like, everything on the menu is absolutely amazing. Comida casera the best! Prices did go up and service is a little slow, however,it's still worth eating here

Yelp
Todo mas que perfecto con la comida y servicio., pero ase falta un buen AC , esta muy sofocado dentro del restaurante

Yelp
This place... what can I say...? It's NOT the best when it comes to quality. Presentation looks beautifully, however the taste was horrible. The handmade tortillas are delish, but their meats do not taste fresh. Several of my group complained that the meat was bad. To avoid food poisoning , please do NOT eat their seafood or meats. Opt for a vegetarian options, like tacos de papa with rice and beans. I honestly only recommend the handmade tortillas & corn tamales. Replying to the Owner: Luis, This is the kind of attitude that is making your WHOLE brand "El Sinaloense" have a terrible reputation! From customer service all the way to the food! This might be a cultural thing with the horrible service that comes from your staff, however, not everyone is receptive to receiving that kind of treatment. Your response is so unprofessional it just speaks volumes of the type of business you run. Check the menu? I did sir! And even if you don't have potato tacos I'm sure your restaurant can make them. That's only if you care to accommodate and provide better customer service.

Yelp
I come here often and the food is very homey and always the same has consistency. There's a large dinning area and yet service is fast. I usually come in the evening and the ambiance is on the calmer side. The agua de cebada is reaalllyyy good... highly suggest coming here. The pollo a la plancha is also good. There are plenty of bottled salsas and you get unlimited sour cream and home made salsa.

Yelp
La comida super asquerosa nos cayó mal a mi y Ami familia lo único bueno fue la sodas

Yelp
My family and myself like coming to eat here . Food is very delicious with authentic Mexican taste. Their menu is full of different plates so there something for everyone. I really recommend there Torta Mixta it is fire so good. They also have fresh made liquados which are so good also. Trust me this place won't disappoint you. Their servers are very friendly and attentive very great service.

Yelp
The food is delicious! Everything I've tried honestly has that homemade feel to it. My favorite is the sopes and carne asada plate.

Yelp
Food is good but the 1-star is for the inconsistent business hours. You might make the drive out and come to find out it is closed. We pulled up at 6:30 -- restaurant hours online clearly state 9pm closure Sunday. We drove out and they literally locked the door as we were heading to the front door. The people inside saw that we were attempting to dine here and didn't even have the decency to address us or apologize for the early closure. Wanton disregard for customer service implies a lack of civility in the way business is tendered therefore I shan't be returning. Super unprofessional - super unreliable hours - lack of professionalism or regard for clientele = 1 star. Update your hours on Yelp, Google etc.
google avatar

Martha M.

Yelp
Second time coming here after calling prior to arriving and they confirmed they were closing at 9, we arrive right now at 6:46 and it's completely closed. Makes no sense why they confirm it's open and it's totally closed. Terrible!!

Yelp
If you speak Spanish it's comida casera! Meaning home made food. It's like eating at your moms place, if you're Mexican. Nothing fancy or trendy just good wholesome food. I like coming here because the food takes me back to when I was young and having some of my moms cooking. Nothing fancy or trendy, just some simple, delicious huevos rancheros or huevos con nopales with some beans and queso fresco and the best some hand made corn tortillas! I normally go for breakfast so I haven't tried all their food items but their sopes are just as yummy. The only one item I did try and wasn't satisfied with was their machaca. It was too dry for me. It seems like a family own business and so like most places at the moment their low on staff so don't hold that against them. One last thing. I've gone quite a few times and the waitresses have changed, for the most part their ok but maybe once one could have been a bit more pleasant.

Yelp
Great food, tastes just like my mom's and grandma's cooking. We're from Culiacán, Sinaloa. Muy buen sazón! I highly recommend this place if you want authentic Sinaloense food.

Yelp
This place was great! Parking is a pain- hardly any street parking and the back parking lot is a bit of a mess as it's shared with apartments. The food however, amazing. I tried the beef tostadas and sopes. They were delicious especially with the consomé that you pour over. I also got corn tamales which were amazing. Prices were cheap for the amazing quality food. I got there a bit late so they were sold out of most seafood. I really wanted to try their agua chiles but maybe next time. Service was fine and food came out pretty quickly. They weren't too busy on a Saturday night. I can't speak for how authentic the food is because I've never been to Sinaloa but the food was mouth watering good. I will definitely be back. Their menu is ample. There is definitely something on the menu for everyone.
google avatar

Rosario L.

Yelp
My family is from Sinaloa! This place is legit! The servers and the owners are so nice and accommodating! The booths are spacious and the location is clean. I ordered the machaca. Bomb! Just like Los Mochis! I also ordered the chilaquiles verdes! Be careful, they are bomb but spicy!!! I also ordered los tamales de elote. Bomb! Even the frijoles, which have to be good if it's a Sinaloa spot, were on point. I will be back!
google avatar

Michelle A.

Yelp
Got to say that this is a really really great spot to get your pozole and even barbacoa!!!! Ive been here several times as the flavors of the food are so good !!!! They always make the best food and they make it on the spot!!!
google avatar

Anabel B.

Yelp
I had the chicken enchiladas, served with rice and beans I got the frijoles puercos option. Food is fresh and delicious. Portions are reasonable I had a pork fried tamale and I wasn't disappointed reminds me of my aunts cooking. They also serve you salsa and the red one was my favorite not so spicy, it wasn't runny/watered down.
google avatar

Diamond M.

Yelp
I really recommend this place, super fast service and the food is really good. Especially the Chilaquiles Verdes are so good , they have a really good taste to them. The smoothies are highly recommended, the banana smoothie is so good.
google avatar

Karen H.

Yelp
Great service & amazing food! Definetly a must place to try out!! The staff is very friendly and welcoming.
google avatar

Steve O.

Yelp
The chilorio (con verduras), the beans and the tortillas. It's fat-on-fat-on-fat and boy is it lovely. Worth the drive from any point in the LA metro area. Not a joke. What's chilorio? It's almost like a ropa vieja. 'Cept the base is pork. It's got more of a kick. And the pork, once shredded, is fried in lard. If you aren't sold, you're not my kind of person.
google avatar

Yelp
I used to order from el sinaloense in hp, but girls are always sooooo busy provide bad customer service and are very rude ! I started ordering from sinaloa express and let me tell you way better service food taste the same not sure if same owner different name. But this spot is amazing fast service ! Parking located in the back . White menudo , chilaquiles , machaca and frijoles puercos bomb !

Darlene K.

Yelp
Food was decent. But the employee was rude and the place was dirty. Would not recommend!
google avatar

Jeanette G.

Yelp
The worst customer service ever! Don't go, the lady she's so disrespectful and she's always right no matter if your showing her. I Oder to go, I get home the beans are so watery I guess they water them down and little bit of meat. I called to get my money back and the lady said if you bring me all the food I'll return you the money. I get there and she said she was not giving me the money back. WTH who does that??? Plus she makes a big scene in front of all her customers eating. (How embarrassing). I just leave because it was embarrassing for me to fight over 48$. I'm sorry if I have misspelled or said something wrong but I am so mad! That was mines and my son breakfast. They didn't say sorry nor offer me a new plate! They just didn't care about their customer. If you see their reviews most of them say they don't care about their customers.

Yelp
Authentic with that homemade taste Sinaloense food. The choco milk Is also so good I love it. I've tried the Barbacoa with frijoles puercos and sopa fría. The menudo is also good. The tamal de puerco. Love it. Service and prices good as well.

Ana S.

Yelp
Food is great, when it's open. Their hours and days vary and to my disappointment always seems to be closed when I'm in the mood for their costillas in chile rojo.

Maria T.

Yelp
I was so sad when they moved locations because I thought I'd never get to eat their food again, well, thankfully they didn't move too far because their food does not disappoint. Everything is super yummy!! I would post a pic of my sopes, but I cleaned out my plate.

Miguel A.

Yelp
Great spot, much better than the one in Huntington Park, food is always great, and no attitude service.

Elizabeth O.

Yelp
AMAZING food tastes just like my abuelita makes!! Definitely recommend this place if you're looking for real Sinaloa food! 1
google avatar

Maria M.

Yelp
This place is not worth comming too, the food was salty presentation was horrible, and they give faucet water yuck!! Save your money go some place else...

Susie D.

Yelp
Overall food was delicious and authentic! I loved the machaca and home made corn tortillas. The coffee was also delicious. The frijoles puercos were a little bland. Service was good. The server was attentive. I can't wait to go back and try a different dish.
google avatar

Art R.

Yelp
First time here these guys are new so I came for tacos but fell in love with the beef sopes served with a side order of broth so amazing. I recommend big time.

Natalie F.

Yelp
You looking for authentic Mexican food this place is it!!! Staff is the friendliest and most helpful when you don't know what to order recommended to everyone and anyone
google avatar

Cynthia L.

Yelp
I placed an order for 3 orders of chilaquiles and I payed $42!!! That's literally $14 for each plate of chilaquiles that tasted very plain. There was nothing special about it. I was disappointed to say the least.

Hector S.

Yelp
Best food in South Gate ! Taste just how my grandma used to make rip 10/10 would recommend Anyone who disagrees is wrong
google avatar

Beatriz M.

Yelp
I've been to Sinaloa Express with my family so many times and let me start by saying it's super delicious. What makes it even better is the fact that is owned by a family. Makes you feel like home, the server (a lady who's name I can't remember) is super friendly always welcomes us with great customer service. She makes sure we leave happy. Which we always do. I would be coming back every time I'm in the area. Thank you guys so much can't wait to be back
google avatar

Fabian L.

Yelp
Delicious food but business is business if you can't pull your weight don't advertise it. Waitress was nice but give her some help . Just cz I was my kids I would had walked away. . Next time I'll stick to state st sinaluence .
google avatar

Edgar M.

Yelp
We finally made out to their new location. We are loyal customers from their first location in El Sereno. They are so missed there. The food is delicious! Quality is great. Taste is amazing! It's as tradition Sinaloense food as can be. The machaca, asado, sopes, bistec de res, chilorio, barbacoa, and chilaquiles are my favorite. The frijoles and frijoles puercos are amazing! Hand made tortillas are great too!

Erick .a. G.

Yelp
Literally gave the worst customer service the lady that attended me had such a mean attitude because I was asking questions about the food, the food was off and salty. Can't imagine messing up a easy to make mexican food like tacos and fajitas. Wouldn't recommend, for the price you can find better places, like pollo loco

Cynthia S.

Yelp
Their orange juice was good because is freshly made but their food is not flavorful it's dry and taste refrigerated.
google avatar

Camilla P.

Yelp
This place is absolutely delicious, so authentic, so clean, I feel welcomed every time I eat here (and so does my stomach) the staff is absolutely amazing, they really have a heart of gold and make my family and I ALWAYS feel like part of the family!!!! They make everything with love and I am so glad we found this spot! I tell everyone about them because they deserve all the business and success!!!! Truly amazing!!!!!
google avatar

Jasmine G.

Yelp
Ive been here a handful of times and the service has always always been amazing. It reminds me of being served in my tias houses. It exudes the hospitality anyone receives when they visit family.
google avatar

Terri L.

Yelp
Glad they moved to a bigger place food is great and owner are very friendly and nice come and try the place
google avatar

Edenia H.

Yelp
Randomly decided to try this place out since I was nearby. I got the chicken enchiladas which were really good and better than most that I have had. I didn't really like the rice and beans too much. The cashier was nice and it wasn't busy so it didnt take long for me to get my food. Cool little place.
google avatar

Carolyne O.

Yelp
Everything is delicious the sopes, asado 100% Sinaloense señores , you will no regret it at all.. friendly service, súper clean .. I just love this place. When I saw that they were gone from Alhambra and I was so sad guess what! I found them here in South Gate and now I'll for sure be making the drive.
google avatar

Tyler G.

Yelp
Fantastic and unique and very inexpensive. Best Beans I've ever had. Great experience overall and they offer delicious homemade corn tortilla quesadillas.

Maria G.

Yelp
1st time visiting yesterday. Sunday 12/20/2020. Arrived at 2:40Pm and were denied service because closing time is at 3PM. The cashier said they need to "clean". Drove 35 miles to check this place out. Never again.

Suzanna S.

Yelp
Good food and service. No chips and salsa st your table. Torta was flavorful but small. Menudo blanco was ok - nothing against it but I've had better. Tamales de puerco are delicious. Need to come back to try the frijoles puercos.
google avatar

Daisy F.

Yelp
This is my go-to spot when I'm in the mood for some genuine home-made Mexican breakfast. Reminds me a lot of my mom's cooking which is always comforting, especially since I live on my own. The staff is always welcoming and friendly.
google avatar

Jaay T.

Yelp
The best !!!!!!!!!! There chocomil shake bombbbbbbbbbb takes me back to my days in Mexico
google avatar

Mayra T.

Yelp
We drive all the way from Pasadena to enjoy the great food. My husband is from Sinaloa and he says this is "the real thing". Everything we have tried is delicious. Despite the 35 minute drive we are regulars at this location.
