Slabtown New Seasons Workers Officially Vote to Unionize - Eater Portland

"Sinful Confections, a bakery that specializes in gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, and vegan baked goods, opens today at 9053 SW Barbur Boulevard. The bakery was established in 2015 by baker Julie Middelstadt, who started developing recipes for treats like chocolate chip cookie dough brownies, oatmeal creme pies, and more for her gluten-sensitive kids. Staying true to its roots as a farmers market vendor, Sinful Confections will offer beverages from market vendors Blind Coffee Roasters, N2 Nitro, and BWild Kombucha at the bakery." - Janey Wong

Best bakery EVER! Every time I come I can enjoy dessert without being worried about having dairy. And It’s so good it’s hard to imagine what whey use instead of dairy but as far as I know it’s magic! I ordered my husband’s birthday cake after trying one of their cupcakes! It was nice of them to walk me through the options for ordering it. You can also order online. I’m not a big sweets person but this was the softest fluffiest chocolate cake I think I’ve ever had. Thank you for the sweet treats!

Google
Best dessert shop in Portland. Even better that they are gluten free and allergy free. They made the most amazing chocolate cake for my wife’s birthday. This is an amazing dessert place and the fact they cater to allergies makes it even better.

Google
I recently visited Sinful Confections, a gluten-free bakery, and I was extremely impressed. The service was exceptional and the staff was very friendly and informative! The food was delicious and it was hard to believe it was all gluten-free. The coffee was also excellent, perfectly complementing the baked goods. I highly recommend this bakery to anyone, gluten-free or not. I will definitely be returning!!!

Google
Hubby is really gluten sensitive, to the point cross contamination makes him sick in minutes. So when we unexpectedly found ourselves staying the night in Portland our hopes were not the highest for finding a yummy morning treat. We were delighted when just down the road from our hotel we found this place. Employees were nice, and they had a semi decent selection. We were a little bummed no cinnamon rolls, (only on Saturday), but we spotted a pumpkin spice bar. It was delicious. Moist, good flavor, looked appetizing. We would definitely eat it again. It's so rare to find a good gluten-free bakery. Next time we are down here we will be sure to snag a cinnamon roll to try.

Google
I was shocked to see that there weren't 100% 5 stars on this place...! It is our favorite place in town-- for anything edible! We live in deep NE Portland and drive all the way out for the goodies. I am allergic to gluten, soy, and dairy, and not only can I have basically everything in The store, I haven't had anything like it since realizing I had allergies (over a decade ago). Hands down beats Petunia's or G.E.M. or any of the other alternative bakeries. My partner has not allergies, and still will get a bunch for herself. We had Sinful Confections for our wedding, and no one had any idea it was gluten/soy/dairy free-- and people thought it was amazing! Anyway, if you haven't tried them-- do it!

Google
got a cookie sampler, an oatmeal creme pie, and a cinnamon roll, and they are all SO GOOD! I stumbled upon this place at the salem saturday market and the cinnamon roll is the best i’ve had in ages, cookies are delicious. I have celiac and finding gluten free baked goods is hard. This place blew my expectations out of the water!

Google
My favorite booth at the Salem Saturday Market. Gluten-free AND vegan AND delicious. Everything is good but the loaded cookie is my favorite.

Google
The price was about what I expected (more than I wanted to pay but on par with reality). The employee was helpful and he was friendly to my kids. Desserts were hit or miss, but that strawberry-frosted birthday flavored cake slice was quite a HIT. I totally forget it was gluten free. Just fantastic. But don't get the monster cookie.

Yelp
Wow...I love this place. I got an oatmeal cream pie, a salted caramel cupcake, and a cookie Oreo bar. Everything was amazing and highly recommend it. All items area gluten-free and dairy-free. They label all items with potential allergens so if you have additional allergies read the labels. Plenty of parking which is nice too.

Yelp
I have food allergies so this place is a dream come true. I can walk in and get anything without having to worry about what's in it. I don't understand people who don't have food allergies writing bad reviews for this place. If you don't have food allergies, came to Sinful Confections not knowing they were gluten free, then posted a bad review, that is your own fault and you should be ashamed of yourself. Go get your Fred Meyer donuts or whatever. You have tons of options. We need more places like this because they are rare and for those of us who don't have all the options all over the place, essential.

Yelp
Unless you have food allergies (we do not) don't go there. Our cookies were not very tasty and definitely not worth the price. I feel bad for people that have food allergies and have to pay these high prices for little substance. We got a cookie Woopie pie and a salted Carmel thing, i don't remember if it was a cookie or brownie. Also the gal pulled them out of the case with her hand no glove and put them directly on a tray, no paper. At least put a napkin between the food and the tray. Very odd.

Yelp
Full disclosure, I have no aversion to gluten or dairy. I came here because of my wife's dietary needs. I just want food that tastes good. Heads up- the food here tastes amazing! We started off with a cinnamon roll. They were awesome and heated it up for us, and it was amazing. Normally rolls are dry for me but this one was perfect! Gooey deliciousness. We got some of the oatmeal creme pies (we call them whoopy pies). These were flavor explosions! The cookies and the filling were spot on amazing! We will come back just for these cookies! The pumpkin bars were soft and moist, the seasoning was a little intense for me. The lemon bars had a great texture and were nice and sweet, I would have loved a little stronger lemon flavor. What we bought should have been dessert for a week, but it ended up being a very nice dinner instead. Sooooo good, I can't wait to get back! Great service, great baked goods!

Yelp
Sinful Confections recently opened a shop on Barbur Blvd. in Barbur Plaza. We were stopping to purchase a gyro two doors down and noticed the shop. We have since been in to try their products two times. The owners, husband and wife team, are super friendly and welcoming. We learned that they got a start at many of the PNW farmers markets, where you can often still find them; Beaverton, Tigard, Wilsonville and Portland. It was great talking with the two of them, learning more about their journey to their baking business and new storefront. They have a deep passion for what they are doing and it shows. They specialize in cookies - many are stuffed with a rich cream in between two cookies - what they call loaded cookies. They also have baked bars - such as lemon bars, cupcakes and coffees. Their products are allergy sensitive recipes (gluten free, and soy free). The store is quaint and smells amazing when you walk in ~ the sweet smell of fresh baked goods comes from the back of the shop. We each opted for two different kinds of loaded cookies. My husband got the oatmeal and I got the chocolate. While both were good, I enjoyed my husbands oatmeal with a nice balance of a nutty, sweet and hint of cinnamon with the sweet filling between the two cookies. It's nice to have a bakery in the neighborhood.

Yelp
We stopped in before leaving on vacation. It was their first weekend in a brick and mortar store. I'm very confident that this place will succeed! The husband wife team is great! Very nice, customer focused and have great treats to eat. I'm late writing this review, it's been a couple of weeks and I'm craving more sweets. Great Job!!

Yelp
Found them from the Capitol Hill Motel I'm staying at, right across the street. I came here last year in September to check them out. Omg I've never had A Blondie Brownie melt in my mouth. I flew In Wednesday and got bloodies and the cinnamon roll. A very nice selection of all pastries. Much Mahalo

Kathy B.

Yelp
Not great. To be fair I only tried the brownie and a lemon bar. (13.00 seems a bit high) I know dairy and gluten free is a challenge, but these were dry and not great. Maybe they were made the previous day ?

Yelp
Our little guy turning 3 so we wanted to treat his friends at daycare. However, due to multiple kids having allergies like dairy, eggs, nuts and gluten ....we were very limited with our choices. Thankfully, we found Sinful Confections. Not only did it meet all our criteria but these loaded cookies tasted great as well. They also individually wrapped each cookie, along with a sticker that shows all ingredients. Made it very simple for us. We would definitely come back!

Yelp
Sinful connections is delicious! Everything is so delightful and there's quite a myriad of treats! I want to visit their store, every time I've seen them at the Portland Night Market, the folks are so kind and helpful!

Yelp
Staff were lovely! I tried the choco chip cookie and it tasted like there was more sugar than cookie! Waayy too sweet, like over the top. Also tried the nitro can Oat milk Chai, I didn't know that it would be overly full of sugar too! Way too sweet!! There wasn't even ingredients listed on the can so it was deceptive, all it reads is oat milk chai, so that's all I expected was oat milk and chai, but it was mostly sugar. X___X

Yelp
Amazing variety of gluten-free treats! I picked up a cookie sandwich and a cookie dough brownie. They were a hit!
google avatar

Vanessa H.

Yelp
The brownie with cookie dough was amazing. The oatmeal woohoo pie pie was really good but as well. So amazing to have a full vegan bakery that doesn't just do cupcakes, although they have those as well! Super friendly staff as well.

Arreis S.

Yelp
Love this place!! I've only been a few times and each time I am amazed. The cookies are delicious!! Also the ladies there are so kind.

F O.

Yelp
$20 worth of chocolate peanut butter brownies (a total of 3 brownies) were almost inedible. I sent my daughter to pick up treats for a ladies meeting. When I was cutting them up (about 10 minutes after she got home), I decided to taste them. Dry. Dry! Dry!!! And they didn't taste good either. But I had no choice, I brought them to the meeting. Most of the women tried them, but left the remainder on their plate. When I asked if anyone wanted to take the remainder (way more than half) for their family, no one was interested!!! Just to be clear, most of the other dishes brought were eaten and, if any was left, were enthusiastically taken by the other ladies if they were offered. Super sad that these were so bad. Even sadder that they were so expensive and also bad.

Yelp
This place is awesome! The owners have been a part of local farmers markets around town for years, and have finally opened up a brick & mortar. Everything we have purchased from them has been of the highest quality. My daughter has celiac, and this place is awesome! Many places in town only do GF cupcakes, but they do so many other things including cupcakes. They also have a full coffee bar with free milk alternatives! Check out their 4 nitro drinks as well We love them at the farmers markets, but now we can go any time for any occasion! Stop by and support these amazing owners!

Yelp
We've purchased Sinful Confections cupcakes for two separate occasions and they have been a HIT with the crowd each time. I typically get the sprinkle / confetti cupcakes for the kids and the assorted flavors for adults. It's honestly the favorite menu item of the day / night.
google avatar

Yelp
We had their Snickerdoodle Blondie Bar and brownies tonight at the South Waterfront farmers market. Both were outstanding. I look forward to seeing them again next week.

Erica C.

Yelp
We had been looking forward to this opening and unfortunately we will not be coming back. At $5 per cupcake, they are exceedingly small. I recognize that inflation is at an all time high but the cake does not even fill a standard cupcake tin. When I took a bite, the cake was so hard and felt like it had been sitting out for a few days. I couldn't even swallow the one bite. The service was nice though!

Yelp
THIS PLACE IS EVERYTHING My god daughter who has the most limiting food allergies I've ever seen, was able to have almost everything, she was almost screaming with excitement when she told me. I am so thankful for this place with all the wholesome ingredients. And... it's SO good. Definitely a safe choice for food restrictions, allergies, and even someone like me just wanting to indulge without the guilt.
google avatar

Temari A.

Yelp
I came in for dairy free cupcakes. Not only did they help save the day, the cupcakes were a hit! They were so tasty, and everyone couldn't help but enjoy these vegan cupcakes. Thanks for saving the day!

Robin S.

Yelp
I've been munching on Sinful Confections goodies for several years now and have always been satisfied. From farmers markets, to the stand they had at Bridgeport Village and now their cute shop on Barbur Blvd...easily my favorite go to GF shop! Samples, variety, price, taste, texture and customer service, cinnamon rolls and quiche! And they have these amazing Nitro cold brew coffees, horchata and teas...yumm! I've never even heard of nitro horchata and tea!! I also love that they support other local vendors by displaying and selling their cute stickers, decorating kits, and bbq sauces!! Julie and her team support the local community and raised $$$$$ to help people buy groceries around the holidays. And, I LOVE that they support or local police and fire departments! Hands down-amazing!
google avatar

Claire D.

Yelp
good service and a great selection of treats! We got the pumpkin spice cupcake and ginger snap whoopee pie, both were so tasty!
google avatar

Haley R.

Yelp
Sinful confections is a fantastic well run company. Julie is such an excellent baker. She takes her time making sure that everyone is always satisfied and continuously surprises with the most AMAZING flavors ever! Delicious vegan desserts are hard to come by and she does such a fantastic job with her flavor choices that you wouldn't even know they're vegan. If you want to support a vegan dessert business, This is the one. Don't look any further. Beyond the excellent cupcakes, the items are competitively priced and worth every cent! Keep killing it!

Ken T.

Yelp
This review is for a 8" gluten and dairy free two layer cake. First, I selected chocolate butter cream on the order form, and got vanilla. Second, it was over-baked and very dry. The center fell, so they compensated with over an inch of frosting on both layers in order to make it level. We ended up throwing most of it out. While the cake looked nice before we cut into it, the overall product combined with a high price tag made this a big disappointment (we have had 5-star vegan/gluten free layer cakes elsewhere).

Yelp
I was so excited to receive the Blueberry Lemon cupcakes for my birthday. It is hard to find a tasty GF treat on the West side and the positive reviews had me excited. Unfortunately the cupcake was so dry and tasted more like a muffin than a cake. The blueberry frosting was also hard and difficult to bite into. The frosting was also heavy with a gritty powder sugar texture. So sad! No one in my family liked them either, such a disappointment!

LL J.

Yelp
the cupcakes were delicious. the cinnamon buns were banging. i was shocked they were so good for vegan and gluten free bakery items!
google avatar

Thuy N.

Yelp
I love cakes, donuts, and all sweets. The stuff here is very pretty but not a big fan of the taste.

Brad P.

Yelp
I have a 6 yr old son with multiple allergies and issues that cause him to break out in rashes. As a result, my wife and I felt horrible for him as he could not enjoy treats with his friends during parties or heck, just when the occasion allowed. Coming across the vegan gluten free aspects of this place, as with many others, I had my reservations as to whether or not my sons body could handle it. We gave it a go and knew if our son broke out we would simply have another place we couldn't go for our treats. Not only did his skin not break out, but we were all pleasantly surprised at the deliciousness of the treats. The softness and crumble was delightful. And that taste is perfectly rich. After seeking out a place like this for so long, despite the drive for us, being in north east, it is worth it to give our son that childhood smile.

Yelp
The pumpkin bread and pumpkin cupcakes are to die for. So happy to find a gluten-free scrumptious treat.
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
This business was incredibly responsive and got back to me right away about my order. They were flexible with days and offered delivery, messaging me at 9pm like champs. Found their cupcakes in the Gresham Farmers Market and they were very delicious. Thanks to them for their kindness to me and to the vegan community!

Morris W.

Yelp
So happy to have found Sinful Confections. We are a household where gluten free is critical and their treats are so great, it's almost impossible to believe they are truly gluten free (and dairy free)! Because of COVID, we've had them deliver, and they've been great! Whether you have dietary restrictions or not, they are amazing!
google avatar

Penelope M.

Yelp
It's really hard to find Gluten-free baking products that are actually comparable to the real thing, but these cupcakes are truly a pleasant surprise! Thankful me and a friend found these by chance and we will certainly be back
google avatar

Keatin R.

Yelp
stumbled upon them at the beaverton farmers market & now i dont think ill be able to resist buying a treat every saturday from here on out!!! i never feel compelled to write a yelp review on anything, but seriously the cupcakes were way beyond good -- the texture and consistency were absolutely perfect, & the taste was amazing. i got the german chocolate cupcake, & a strawberry chocolate one. both are so good, & the fact that theyre vegan as well?!? its just ludicrous. well done, & thank you !!

Lauren Z.

Yelp
Love love love these cupcakes! I don't exclusively eat gluten free or vegan, but these cupcakes are my absolute favorite treat/dessert!

Abby H.

Yelp
I should start by saying I'm not gluten free or vegan and these are still the most amazing cupcakes! They have the perfect texture, the frosting is always yummy, and her snickers flavored cupcakes would be the one food I would want to be stranded on a deserted island with! My son loves mint chocolate chip and my daughter is a huge fan of lemon poppyseed. You can't go wrong with Julie and Sinful Confections!

Stephanie S.

Yelp
First of all. The cupcakes are so so so tasty. Secondly, Julie is so amazing. I contacted her the night before my husbands birthday and she put aside cupcakes just for me. We will DEFINITELY be back!
