The 8 Cantonese Restaurants That Make Me Want to Move to Canada | Bon Appétit

"A no-frills late-night spot famous for a velvet-textured steamed pork cake threaded with fresh ginger and salted fish, richly cooked in its own fat; other highlights include meaty clams in a sticky sweet-salty black bean sauce, garlicky crisp-tender snow pea leaves, and cold Kokanee beers. The atmosphere is utilitarian (Sprite boxes, TVs playing Food Network), but the reliably dialed-in, flavorful Cantonese fare keeps the place packed with couples and families well into the night." - ByElyse Inamine

Foods are excellent. Can keep up the standard most of time. It is very Canton/Hong Kong style dishes. A middle size dinning area but always packed of people. I suggested you always book the table before you go. Service has a room to improve, not the worse but not very friendly either. Therefore, if you do not care about service at all, this is the place you should go.

I read the reviews (good and bad), and honestly, was thoroughly impressed with this place. The 叉燒 (BBQ Pork) I had here was the best I've ever had. Nice level of thickness to their pieces, an interesting level of slight chard on the outer layer, yet still juicy on the inside. Plus, the 燒肉 (Roast Pork) was had the crispiest skin I've had compared to most other places in Los Angeles. HOWEVER, I have to take points away from their 乾炒牛河 (Beef Stir-fried Rice Noodles). The flavor was really lacking. Color was off, and it was much more oily than they normally should be. I took it to go, but honestly, had to dump half of it the next morning. BUT they did redeem themselves with the level of service --very nice people! On top of that, despite only ordering so few dishes, we still got dessert at the end! 紅豆沙 was really good! Had some cooked 糯米 (sticky rice) or 黑米 (black rice) maybe? Added a nice distinct flavor to it. Oh, and my girlfriend had some really good 薑汁撞奶 (Ginger juice over gelatin milk)! It was nice and rich, very creamy and custard-like (possibly used egg whites). If I got anything wrong, please let me know! Total came out to almost $70CAD, and then I decided to add the total to $80CAD for tip. Would definitely love to come back and try their other dishes.

Was there at about 5.45pm and the place was already crowded. We were lucky to get a table. The food was good and large serving (don't have small serving). You can also ask for their free soup.

Extremely tasty authentic Cantonese da laang dishes. The late night discount specials start after 9pm and though pricier than other competitors, the quality is better and the portions are generous. If you buy 3 dishes, it comes with a free large plain rice congee. Highly recommend the pea shoots in consomme which were so tender and rich, the deep fried silverfish, deep fried pork intestines, and honey garlic spareribs. The taste of the food was all on point and was so satisfying. Would definitely return.

Google
There are very few da lang late night places in Richmond that open after midnight so tried this place as we haven't been here for a while. The prices are quite expensive and the dishes are not large, but the food is tasty and there is a variety. Lots of parking late night so it's preferred over Vancouver places. It's busy even weekday night, but the service is not the best

We decided to try Sing Yee for the boss’ s birthday dinner. We had reservations for 930pm but were seated 20 minutes later. The restaurant was busy so I had high hopes. Our server was attentive and friendly. We ordered plain congee and many dishes. Everything was served hot and yummy. Definitely worth trying out in Richmond!

Google
This is one of the Chinese restaurants that opens till late in Richmond, BC. It serves many Canton dishes as well as some Chiu Chow dishes. We ordered 5 dishes (see photos) for 6 of us. The best is the deep fried intestines. For those who like this dish must know that the crispiness is the key. If deep frying for too long, they will become very dry, but if too short, it would defeat the whole purpose of having this dish. Sing Yee managed to do it JUST RIGHT. And I love the appropriate amount of fat they left on the intestines to give them more flavor. The deep fried duck meat and taro is not bad. The meat in the taro remained juicy and tender with the right amount of flavor. It would have been better if they had a better control of the deep frying time (honestly I don't understand why they did so well with the pig intestines but not this one). As you can probably see from the photo, they turned brown and became quite dry because of deep drying for too long. The fish fillet and the steam fish came as a combo for $59.90. They both tasted alright. Nothing outstanding. The WORST is the beef briskets with daikon. If I really had to rate it, I would give it 1/10. Why? The beef briskets were very dry and tough, and the daikon were not fully cooked. Not to mention that there were so little beef briskets. The photo might have given you an impression otherwise, but in fact the briskets were so thinly sliced. We regretted for ordering this. I think we may still visit again given Sing Yee's long operating hours and the vast variety in its menu. We will never order beef briskets though.

Google
Legit Cantonese style night restaurant. The only thing not too authentic is how nice and polite the servers were, it ain't like that in real hong kong restaurants. The steamed milk dessert is top notch. Was opened till midnight on Friday, great Late night option!

Yelp
Parking on the strip mall. Take credit card, cash, debit. The place has outstanding service. Ordered: Fish fillet and sautéed veggies - large portions - very savory Soy chicken - very tender chicken and good solid taste. Free - Soup and dessert Rice extra A great ma and pa shop with a huge variety of dishes. Reservations recommended

Yelp
Tried it out first time and likely the last time. Was expecting it to be better given the fierce competition of restaurants in Richmond. Price on the high side too. Set meal for 4 is over $100 and the dishes are all very average. Nothing to write home about. No rice as mentioned in previous review. That young no smile male cashier is unfriendly just him alone made me not wanting to return. Unfriendly greeting as we walked in. Did nothing when dessert was spoiled. Anyway enough ranting. Just lots of better choices in Richmond and Vancouver. Located in the typical strip mall (Continental Plaza). Free parking as expected but spots are kind of tight. PS Come to think of it , food not better than 24/7 Lansdowne No. 9 restaurant in my opinion - if you really need food in Richmond late at night.. No. 9 offers better value not dishes at $30+ per plate.

Yelp
Good food, service and price. First time eating here and trying their 打冷宵夜 da Lang Siu Yeh (late night dinner) menu. (After 9pm). Have not had any Da Lang in years, but it was delicious! Interesting tidbit...Apparently 打冷 da Lang comes from 潮州 Chaozhou China. And the 打 does not mean to "hit", but to "eat"? Only thing I wish there's an improvement on would be better spacing of their tables for Covid! I loved the table we were at, but can't say the same for the rest of the restaurant though. They do have a thermometer check at the entrance though, so that's good. But with the new vaccine passport roll out on the 13th, I would highly recommend this place.... Especially for their late night menu... So 5 stars? (After the 13th?) Anyways... food is good!

Yelp
This review is for their 9pm and after, da-lan or 打冷, menu. A good 打冷 menu is wide in selection, "smaller" in quantity, moderate to low in cost due to the smaller plates, and free congee. Sing Yee hits all of these bases. It is crammed. The wait staff will probably rush you to order if you come at 9pm. This place is awesome, and there are people waiting - at 10pm! We went with a party of 14, occupying the biggest table they have. I tell you; it's awesome. Our wait person clearly knew what she was doing to move us along. You might say she's rushing, but she definitely has a rhythm to her work to make sure we get our food in a timely manner. And I appreciate that more than anything else. We had a table full of food and more, literally. They paced our food until there was room on our table. We all enjoyed the many dishes greatly, which is impressive for 14 people. We ordered lots of hardcore HK dishes that were very satisfying especially because they are hard to find. This is not the complete list. Hard to find dishes: - Pig Intestines - crispy fried, soft on the inside, over pickled diakon and carrot sticks. - Deep fried chicken joints with chili pepper and salt - Marinated duck chin in soy sauce - Pig Blood with Chives - Braised Beef Brisket in Clear Broth Relatively common dishes: - Gai Lan with oyster sauce - Deep fried squid with chili pepper and salt - Clams in black bean sauce - Honey garlic spare ribs - Sauteed pork with green beans Enjoy their uniqueness. Don't ding them for the rush at 9pm. If you want to take your time, come at 10:30pm and after.

Yelp
First time there. Order the 3 dishes for dinner -- pork chop, chicken, and a veggie with chicken/prawn. All of them tasted great -- not too salty nor greasy. Good thing we made reservation as the place fill up very quickly. Looks like we found another place to eat.

Yelp
This was used to be my family's go to place when we go to Richmond. Their food was delicious at reasonable price. However, after Covid, everything has went up a lot especially for the live seafood. I understand that restaurants have been suffering during Covid, but their lobster and crab market price is 15% more than other Chinese restaurants. Also, their tables are quite close to each others, they put us right at the door where everyone can walk by and there was no space to social distance. Having said that, I still enjoy their food and the portion is very decent here. Hope they can improve and we can come back to aupport them!

Yelp
We ordered the minced beef fried rice, salt and pepper tofu and sautéed clams. Overall the dishes were tasty. We like how they treated all customers the same. Being non Chinese spoken customers, they brought us complimentary soup and tea. At the end of dinner, they offered us free dessert. We have been to other restaurants where we were not necessarily offered those. We did have to flag the wait staff because they are so busy. Prices are indeed on the high side.

Yelp
We came here for late night "da lang" on Saturday at 9pm. We made a reservation for 14 people and didn't have to wait when we arrived. We were already very excited coming in because we don't have these places in SF. We ordered a total of 14 dishes and had three big bowls of congee for the table. If you order three items, they give you a free big bowl of congee. Some of the dishes were better than others, but there were definitely some standout favorites! The clams in black bean sauce were tasty. The honey garlic spare ribs were SO good. I didn't expect much but it was seriously so delicious - sweet without being overpowering, and fried to perfection. The fried salt and pepper white fish was really good and just perfect with the congee. It has been so long since I've had it so it was extra exciting. And the chicken knees were also surprisingly good! One major disappointment was the salt and pepper fried squid. It was just so dense and the fried layer was doughy. I don't feel like this is a hard dish to get right, especially since they do some others so well. All of the omelettes weren't great, either. I couldn't even taste the oysters in the oyster one. I also couldn't taste the white fish in the white fish one. And the salted veggie one was too salty. I'd skip on ordering those. Service was so-so. There was a young guy who seemed a little lost and timid when wanting to ask us something. Maybe he's new haha. The older lady taking our order was super efficient but snappily so. But all good, we enjoyed our meal nevertheless.

Yelp
This is our "go to" hot spot for late night fare. The boss lady is very friendly and we've been patronizing her restaurant for a long time! They have a late night menu "Da Lang" Hong Kong style late night Tapas; dishes are smaller then regular portions, so you can order more varieties. Ordering 3 or more items and you will get a complimentary congee. The restaurant is also very good with their lunch and dinner menu items, traditional Cantonese dishes are done with good "wok hei" ( proper control of heat with the wok ) so items arrive piping hot from the kitchen. If you do not want to have the late night tapas items you can also choose from their Rice and Noodle dishes which are also done very nicely!

Yelp
August, 21, 2019 Went there for late dinner @ 9pm. It was full house. Took them half hour to give me congee, but the congee was chunky powder congee. I was extremely hungry. I almost died.. Honey garlic ribs... pork taste like not fresh, not crispy, color not right, small portion. But the owner and her 2 sons just ignored us, maybe they were too busy. It's taste awful, it used to be my favorite dish in this restaurant, but not anymore. So disappointed. Pan fried oysters pancake... eggs was half cooked, soft and not crispy. Oyster was fishy. Pork chop with sweet and sour sauce, this is only dish still taste good. It's time for us to find another place for late dinner now. The owner keeps saying .. all the employees went away, nobody work here anymore.. They used to have chinese old man worked for washing dishes. At least 3 cook plus one owner work in kitchen, but on that day just only one indian man washed dishes, owner and 1 cook inside the kitchen. Front end just only lady owner and her 2 sons worked.

Yelp
Very reasonably priced restaurant. We came with 11 people and ordered 8 dishes and the total came to $225 after tip. Their peking duck is pretty well done. Like most Chinese restaurants, you can pick how you like your peking duck. We chose the skin wraps and lettuce wraps. For the wraps, they give you well cut slices with a bit of meat. I like this because there are some places that don't cut it well and leave not much meat on the duck and leave you with the skin only. The lettuce wrap dish's duck is well-seasoned and flavourful. My family said that this is one of the best they've had in a while!

Yelp
Good food & service. Pricing is high for their regular dinner menu. Their "late night" menu is available starting at 9pm and pricing for dishes are around $10-15 range. If you order a certain amount of dishes (I think it was 3-4x) you get a large bowl of plain congee. I really like their honey spare ribs :)
google avatar

Roger D.

Yelp
The service was great. The food was very good and there is a huge selection available. I definitely recommend this place to add everyone that enjoys Chinese food.

Yelp
If you're comparing this late night to No. 9 in Richmond, this place is a lot better, cleaner and tastier. They have recently updated their menu and being family run, the owner is always there to make sure everything is running smoothly. This is why you will end up seeing a lot of familiar faces and repeat customers. They have a dinner special that if you order 3 dishes, you get free congee so great if you are going with a group. When I go I try to order different dishes to try different options but my favorite dish there is still their Taiwan cauliflower with Chinese sausage. Their Peking duck and crab is also very good. As there are many Chinese restaurants in Richmond, this is one of my go to places for late night. I find the main reason why I'd rather come here is the service and the quality. Come check them out if you're in the area and I don't think you'll leave disappointed.

Yelp
As my previous review, I liked this causal and simple place for lunch. That's why I took my parents and in-laws here for dinner. We had 4-course meal dinner plus live crab and sticky rice for dinner. The dishes were good and filling. The portion of foods were good and reasonable price.

Yelp
Sing Yee Restaurant has been serving in Vancouver for quite some time. They have open a 2nd branch inside Richmond Continental Square formerly called Lam Chu Kee. I dine out here tonight & was quite surprised that they were so busy... First impression: Well lit & okay decor. Service: waitress are quite attentive especially the boss lady, she's the busiest.. Price: not the cheapest but consider good value. Efficiency: it was fast for the food but slow for the bill (we have to ask 3 times) Taste: so far so good, very little MSG :)* Overall: B++ Free parking at front and accept credits. I would return for sure!
google avatar

Ger T.

Yelp
Hidden in the middle of their menu is a family 'set dinner' option, which comes with soup and dessert, and you just pick the kind of entrees you like. Rice, interestingly enough, is not included. Tried the bitter melon with spare ribs, preserved vegetable with beef, and fish belly tofu hotpot. All were excellent with no reservations whatsoever. A waitress was really pushing their live seafood, hard; we politely declined. But we did feel a bit dwarfed by tables beside us having Peking duck, roast squabs etc. In fact, business is so brisk for them now they no longer need to open for lunch, just dinner till late night.

Yelp
Great family owned restaurant! Very authentic! Friendly and helpful in explaining all of the dishes.

Yelp
A great Cantonese style family restaurant. Good variety of dishes. Flavor is consistent and ingredients are always fresh. Best to come as a group so you can try out more dishes.

Yelp
Chicken was raw. Brisket was dry and tough. Staff had no remedy. With so many food choices in richmond. Don't waste your time.

Yelp
This was one of those Wunton restaurants that was always second fiddle to a place like Hon's Wunton or Wonton Mein Saga or Michigan Noodles. Why did it have to be that way? The food has always been pretty good and in the past I would have rated the dishes that I've a solid 3 to 4 stars depending on the dish I had. For Wunton (wanton, wonton?) it wasn't bad. Kind of in-between the old fashioned Wunton from Hons and almost like the Wunton like Michigan. This place really needn't be second fiddle to those other places. Service was friendly, they speak English and Cantonese and a bit of Mandarin. The food comes out fast and you're always left full after a meal. This particular occasion I had a mixture of feelings when it came to rating. They had signage that the were open late and I guess their business has really gravitated to the late night snacks. Trying to compete with No 9? I would think their food here is better. I'll have to try a late night snack then one day. So! For my lunch, I had Wunton and (another dumpling) soup with noodles and a side dish of Tripe. The Wunton noodles were quite nice. Good lower glycemic index carbs that is better for me than pasta or udon noodles. The Wunton and that other dumpling that I can't spell was supposed to be an even mix between the two dumplings, but I got 3 of the "suey gao" (god I think I just butchered my attempt at naming it) and it seemed overcooked. The dumpling skin had fallen apart on all my dumplings. I onle got one piece of Wunton. So I was a bit saddened that there wasn't an even proportion between the two dumplings and it seemed that the cook either didn't care or figures I was just a "short white guy in an Asian skin suit" and wouldn't know the difference. I would have given it a 4 star, but this was a borderline 3. I'm not complaining though. My tripe was different. At other places the sauce is thicker. This dish was like it was in a puddle of thin soup. It was almost clean looking in comparison, well, more like watered down. Flavour wasn't as full in comparison to the other restaurants I've compared this to. To be fair, I know that the food is better. So I'm wondering if it was a different cook? New ownership or the business has evolved somewhat? I love the location and this mall offers alot when it comes to food services and competition if fierce. Hopefully they will find a way to no longer have to be second string in a concert of Wunton houses in Richmond. They have great potential, and with Hon's gone by the way of the tax mans heaven, this place can find it's niche.

Yelp
Food is ok at best. Server keep upselling the fish and the Peking duck just like other review mentioned. During dinner, one of the dish has a big piece of plastic food wrap inside. We told one of the guy(maybe the owner) about it and he didnt even apologize. Will never come back to this restaurant.

Yelp
It's not bad for what it is - Chinese restaurant with noodles soups, BBQ meats, stir fried noodles, congee, and some other dishes. It's located in a particularly busy square with many other popular restaurants around. Conclusion: rush hour = no parking! We showed up at 12:30 PM and it was busy. We took a few minutes to find parking. The parking lot is huge, so you will always catch the odd car leaving. The restaurant itself was packed. By that time, most tables were mid-meal. We waited another 15 minutes for a table. We ordered a congee, a noodle soup and a stir fried noodle. The stir fried noodle was served in about 10 minutes. 30 minutes later... the congee was still missing. The congee was for my colleague's young daughter, and she was hungry. So, we asked a server why the congee was taking so long. We ordered congee for her so she wouldn't have to wait very long for her food. Most places have the congee cooked and ready in a large pot. The server explained that they make their congee from scratch. She then made a nasty comment about how we should "do the right thing as adults". I'm assuming she meant that we should try to share our food with my colleague's daughter. Duh... we did. She wants her congee. I had the noodle soup with BBQ meat and Sui Kao. It was OK. On top of everything, our tea cups were never refilled. They really go to extra lengths to avoid eye contact with customers. The only way to get their attention is to yell. I didn't appreciate the unnecessary remarks and inattentive service. Other than that, the food and prices are OK.
google avatar

Brent L.

Yelp
I've missed their "old fashioned" style Cantonese eats ever since they moved away from Victoria Drive. It was only recently that I rediscovered their yummy food and the high pitched owner. Still solid as always and food's very reasonably priced. The server wasn't the friendliest person you'll meet, but she was very prompt and you can be certain that when the going gets tough/busy, she'll have it under control. Would come again for sure!

Yelp
Sing Yee is a casual family owned restaurant where you come here for congee, noodles, comfort Chinese food. The restaurant is clean, bright and simple. Located in Continental Plaza on the far side facing Cambie Road, Sing Yee plays neighbours with Deer Garden Signature, Gyo-O, Pearl Castle and Yuu Japanese Tapas. Service is prompt (sometimes a little weird) and the food arrives quickly. I found myself here on most lunch hours for a bowl of congee and some salt and pepper deep fried tofu. Congee with Fish Slices Creamy, smooth and velvety. It is not watery nor burnt. It always like to get their watercress with mince dace fish paste , fresh fish slices or salted pork with century egg. Salt and Pepper Deep Fried Tofu Can be tricky at times, some restaurants uses chili paste and toss it a few times and tofu is soggy. Sing Yee is crispy with minced garlic, jalapenos, onions and salt and pepper. Dry Beef Pan Fried Rice Noodles Unlike some places that tend to drown this traditionally comfort dish in oil, Sing Yee does it pretty well. It is easy on the oil, yet there is a lot of heat from the wok. Daily Special Veggies - Baby Bok Choy Fresh. Lightly seasoned with salt and garlic. Beef Brisket with Noodles This was bit of a let down. The flavours weren't all there and the sauce was rather thin. When mixed with the soup it is very bland. The brisket itself was somewhat dry and not as tender as I'd like. Singapore Spicy Rice Noodles A good spicy curry flavored dry tossed rice vermicelli with a medley of shrimps, bells peppers, bbq pork etc. This restaurant also offers seafood and other chef specialty dishes in addition to mixed-combo sets for dinner. Sometimes it's the simplest food that comforts you and hits the spot. Salt and Pepper Eggplant Most people won't think of ordering eggplants deep fried and tossed in S&P, but it is actually very tasty. The juiciness and the freshness of the eggplant balances the heat of the S&P. Crunchy exterior and a soft center. Braised Fatty Pork Belly Tender and juicy soaked in all the natural goodness of pickled vegetables, five spice, soy, rice wine and other marinating sauces.

Yelp
Food was actually very delicious. We got the chicken and mixed veggies, fried cod and seafood noodle dishes. Didn't care for the noodles that's why I'm giving 3 stars but the staff was friendly and prompt.

Yelp
We walked past this restaurant at 9pm on a Saturday night and saw a packed house. So we thought we would check it out. Ordered 3 people combo meal for 4 of us, thought it would be enough for some small eaters :)) The combo came with a big bowl of chicken feet peanut soup, 3 main entrees of pea vine vegetable, pork belly, cod fish clay pot and red bean soup as dessert. Rice not included. WOW! Everything was very good, great Cantonese meal. Even as we were leaving at 10pm, it was still full house. Price is reasonable. So we'll be back for sure.

Yelp
Just had a meal there tonight. First time trying it out. Located at continental plaza with ample parking. Ordered the following : salt & pepper fried pork chop $15.80 Pan fired flat noodle with beef $10.95 Beef brisket and wonton noodle $8.30 Service was slow and not attentive. Food was slow coming to the table. Overall not impressed. Taste was average, nothing great. Pricey for what you are getting. Better option would be to go to #9 restaurant. Andy Richmond bc

Yelp
It is one of my fav cantonese restaurant in richmond the portion is quite big.

Yelp
I went a few times. It was good at first but got worse and worse. Poor service, rude waitress. When business is particular good, they give you less food. Poor value compared with lots of Chinese restaurant. It averaged $25 dollars for each of us, 8 total and I did not even eat because the food was so poorly prepared. They are always short staffed. So when they are very busy, they just rush out whatever. But I think they are still good when there are few customers or eaters. I am just not gonna go back anymore. Not for a long while.

Yelp
Fast Food Service is Better 1. Every time we dine there they sell you their fishes. When you order fish is when they chat more with you. If not, they give you that face. 2. Sat down and ordered. 30 mins later when we wanted to add one more dish is when they realize nothing has arrived yet and the order was not put in. 3. Two dishes came and we ordered some rice. 10 mins later more food came and they ask "do you want some rice?" is when they realize the rice order wasn't put in. 4. Server comes by and offers dessert on them. But they give them to everyone every time. How's that even funny? 5. They sell limited pigeons every night. We called in the afternoon to reserve 3 orders. We said 2 are for here, 1 to go. When we order more to go dish is when they tell you the 3rd order of pigeon was sold to another guest. 6. Owner comes and tries to explain about the pigeons. Wants us to wait for another 30 mins. When we told her about the problems so far, sigh she WALKS AWAY WITHOUT ACKNOWLEDGING OR SAYING ANYTHING before we even finished telling her about her servers. 7. We ordered single dishes. When asked why is there a combo on the bill, the owner gives you a menu and asks you to read it yourself. Perhaps you can just explain that it is cheaper to order that way. If she would sincerely apologize and admit to the oversight we would feel better. But that "I don't care" attitude is just a highlight for the night. In the end food was good but we won't go back again.
