"Sometimes, everything comes together. The stars align — it’s a perfect night, you’re at a great restaurant, the company is stellar, and all is right with the world. Sir and Star is the kind of restaurant that can create such sensations. For starters, it’s in the middle of nowhere. To be more specific, it’s in Olema (population: 55), an old Marin County logging town that was a 19th-Century “raunchy row of cardrooms, saloons and establishments of even lesser repute.” The restaurant itself appears to be housed in one such establishment of lesser repute — the Olema Inn, which has been around since 1876. There are animal heads on the wall, and elaborate candle-arrangement-slash-sculptures to reinforce the point. Point is: the vibe is excellent. The food holds up its end of the bargain. We hesitate to use the word “rustic” (because what does that really mean?), but it applies here. There are game birds that seem like they might have been shot just hours before, and fish from Bolinas Bay a few miles down the road. We got the impression that a meal at Sir and Star is a lot like what it would be like if a British hunting lodge had hired a really good chef. They also served mead. This deserves its own paragraph, because we’ve never really had mead at a restaurant. It tastes like a high-class hybrid of champagne and craft beer, and if that doesn’t sound good to you, you haven’t had good mead yet. We predict that mead is going to take the dining world by storm: you’ll soon be seeing headlines about how mead is a “hot food trend.” And while we don’t normally comment on service unless it’s insanely good or insanely bad, this night fell firmly in the former category. We showed up about 45 minutes early (there’s not a lot to do in town), and were graciously rewarded with snacks, wine, and mead, while whiling away our time in comfortable chairs. It was the perfect pre-meal experience, thanks to some very nice front-of-house staff. So if you’re in the wilderness of Marin, looking for a place to hang your hat, Sir and Star is it. This is one of the great dining experiences in California. Food Rundown Fried Green Tomatoes A nice Southern dish to start the meal. The tomatoes were nice, but the greens and corn on the side were even better. Rolls with Seaweed Butter Goddamn do we love squishy bread rolls. And the extra flavor burst of seaweed-infused butter makes them even better. Smoked Squash Soup We’re spoiled for unsmoked squash from now on. Faux Gras Duck Liver Silly puns usually don’t lead to good restaurant dishes. This must be the exception that proves the rule. This duck liver outclassed nearly all the goose liver in the game. We’d never suggest it’s a good idea to bring the foie ban back, but if the replacements are this good... Endives with Potatoes A few too many potatoes for the paltry serving of endives. But some nice tangy (fancy) ranch dressing. Lamb Neck The problem with neck/collar/tail dishes in general is that while they sound cool, the fat-to-meat ratio is way too high. This edition did not escape that problem. Quail with Stuffing Better than Thanksgiving? Definitely, if you don’t let familial love cloud your vision. Lemon Curd with Soft Serve Ice cream is the best dessert. It’s even better with toppings. Fudge with Soft Serve (See above.)" - Max Child

"Approximate Drive Time: 1 hour Why it’s worth it: While other restaurants around Point Reyes largely rely on local oysters, Sir and Star harvests, hunts, forages, and fishes for just about every ingredient on its menu. The food is a true expression of West Marin — set in a historic roadhouse with lovely garden views." - Eater Staff

"Since it opened with lots of fanfare and accolades in 2013, Sir and Star seems to have fallen out of the media’s eye... It’s not oysters that give Sir & Star its deep sense of place, it’s Grade. With her artist’s eye and quirky wit, gravelly voice and cloaked garb, she sails through Sir & Star’s multiple rooms like Madeline’s Miss Clavel, tending to diners." - Rachel Levin

Incredible did and fantastic service. All ingredients in their 7-course meal clone from within 50 miles of the restaurant. Highly accommodating to guests with dogs.

I wish I could give them 10 stars. Honestly. I dropped in on a very busy Saturday night over the weekend without a reservation. They have a fixed menu in the dining room on Saturdays and small plates by a fire place in a more casual dining area next to the main room. When I informed the hostess that I was vegetarian and would be happy to just pick a few things off the small plates menu she suggested that I consider having the chef create a special vegan menu just for me that evening. It was five courses plus dessert, and it was one of the best dinners I have ever had in my life, and definitely the best vegan meal I have ever experienced. The chef brought out each dish personally so he could tell me about the ingredients and how they were prepared. The hostess was delightful and the rest of the wait staff were fantastic as well. Very nice wine list. Small, intimate dining room with unique decor. Very cozy and welcoming. I will never forget the whole evening, from start to finish it was magical.

This is a wonderful intimate restaurant and luckily we could all squeeze in. It is nice to see a finer dining experience in this tiny remote community. We all opted for the lamb special and it was delicious. Unfortunately, the service was lacking and inconsistent. The food coming out of the kitchen was presented nicely with well-developed flavors. The service on the other hand was thin and needed a lot more refinement. Our waters were promptly filled but when our settings were cleared, it was a toss-up who would get enough back to eat the next course. The staff were determinedly rushed to service the modicum of tables; 1 or 2 more attendants in the room would have been great to bring back the serenity of our meal. They need to work on getting more trained wait staff to service the restaurant to the level of the food and perception. The next time we are this way, I look forward to a more homogeneous experience worthy of the intent.

I have been here at least 5 times and every one of my experiences has been spectacular! Tonight we had the most amazing mushroom soup, my husband had tenderloin perfectly cooked and I had cod fried perfectly moist and delicious, but when the icecream came... oh my god! Forget it! I've never experienced such sumptuous icecream as that before! Service was second to none. Can't wait to go back. Warning, price point is high but totally worth it if you are prepared for it. Also, the ambience is really awesome. Feels like you are in someone"s living room Just come for a special occasion and don't be in a hurry It's not that kind of place. But, I hear they offer small plates in the front room on Saturdays, so if you just want to check it out without doing a prix fixe and emptying out your pockets this might be the night to go! Either way ... GO!

Service was great, restaurant is funky yet stylish. We had the 7 course Chefs dinner for 4. Good, good, good. Meat and vegetarian choice there. We don't eat at this level of restaurant that often as you're afraid not getting bad food and poor service and paying a lot for it.... Well this was a treat. May have to do this more often. Recommended. $$$ 1/2

I was sadly disappointed by this restaurant, and I had been looking forward to trying it for some time. We sat in the informal dining room as we were not doing the 3 course meal. My halibut was dry, either overcooked or previously frozen? And the serving size was quite small for an al a carte item, it seems they use they same size plates for their entrees as they do their 3 course meals. Quite a rip off for the price. My husband's meal was good, but not hot. A very limited 'wine by the glass' menu. The wine glasses are thick, clunky glass, the kind you'd use at a party because you don't care if they break. Definitely not a fine dining experience.

Overpriced and pretentious. The lamb was way undercooked and the service was lacking for that price range.

Phenomenal food. I’ve eaten here a handful of times and always return to the vegetable bouillabaisse. I’ve never had anything like it, creamy and rich but not too heavy. If it’s not on the menu that night you can request it and they will almost always make it.
