The 32 Best Restaurants in Oaxaca, Mexico | Eater

"Chef Rene Saynes runs a lively, hip space for his innovative menu of seafood dishes, starring ingredients from his parents’ hometown of Juchitan in the Isthmus Region of Oaxaca. Ceviches, fish tacos, towering aguachiles, and oysters on the half shell show off the bounty of Mexico’s waters. To drink, try the La Chula, a popsicle made with mezcal and seasonal fruits that’s served inside a michelada mixed with your favorite beer. [$$]" - Omar Alonso

Outstanding! Mostly outdoor seating, in an incredible patio & garden with impeccable vibes. The plants, furniture & colours feel very cool-jungle. The music is perfectly curated too. We arrived around 12:40 on a Sunday to find out it didn't open until 1pm, but we were invited to sit at a table and wait on the patio, which was very kind. The service was far beyond what I would expect at a cool restaurant like this- our server was incredibly professional- attentive service, friendly, helpful and accommodating. Pet friendly- our dog was welcomed and offered a bowl of water. The food was excellent. The ceviche was exceptional, and the batter on the fish for the fish & chips was so airy & crisp! Incredible! Great cocktails- a fabulous place to spend a lazy afternoon! Thanks & can't wait to be back!

Lovely, small seafood restaurant with outdoor seating. Oysters only available Thursday-Sunday. Not everything on the menu was available, but we had the aguachile & it was delicious. I also recommend the cerveza preparada.

We stumbled upon this place on our walk back to our airbnb. We liked the outside the decore was bright and interesting, so we decided to stop. Best decision we have made! The food was perfectly seasoned and very tasty. The décor is so cool and the service was excellent. May I recommend that you try the Toro Tostada.

Ordered a bottle of wine to settle in, and they recommended the whole fish special, which was red snapper. Cooked perfectly and is more suited for 2 or 3 people to eat. I did my best! Great staff and ambiance so definitely hit this place up!!

Interesting presentation of the fish and chips. Potato chips with deep fried Robalo fingers in a box. Nice light batter with tartar sauce. Shrimp quesadilla had a generous amount of shrimp and cheese. For my taste, the appetizer sauces were a bit too spicy and the fish batter could be more flavorful. Give them a try.

The place looks very nice. But on a Sunday at 18:30 we were the only guests and lots of staff jumping around. We do not speak Spanish well and after a double check of the menus we realised that the dish was with mussels. Yeak. In one minute of ordering we changed. That was a problem because the cook had already made the ,toast, for the civicha . Well then use that toast is my suggestion. Still we could not change the dish. That made me angry and then we could change te dish. Minutes later my fish and chips came. This is really speedy gonzales! I did not enjoy this dish at all. The chips were patato wedges that were undercooked. The batter of the fish was much too thick and the inside was soggy. I would rate the civicha a 10 and the fish and chips a 1.

Everything from service, vibe (playlist = 🔥) to food was impeccable. Luis, the server, explained and made recommendations over the whole menu. This included pointing out options that you would only find in their restaurant because of their chef and products specific to the area of Oaxaca

Google
One of the few restaurants in Oaxaca that do fresh fish well 🩷 Lots of fish, shrimp, octopus option. We also loved their michelada Chula that included a paleta (that surprisingly balanced and complemented the drink)

Yelp
When we ate here, there surprisingly weren't many people! We ordered a handful of items and absolutely loved the freshness of the seafood, especially the octopus. It's a pretty casual place where you can order a large selection of dishes which means that it's bound to satisfy different types of palettes. They offer complimentary soup in an espresso cup; unfortunately, some did spill on my friend's leg (accidentally) as they were placing it in front of her. They felt very bad so ended up giving her a complementary dessert which was generous of them.

Yelp
A wonderful experience. The eating area is very attractive and the food was very good. A mistake on my part was the ceviche de atún that had chipotle mayonnaise which overwhelmed the beautifully fresh fish. Desert float de coco was great despite my concerns if would be too "coconut forward " Service was very attentive and the atmosphere great with a good selection of music that was not too loud

Yelp
Fresh seafood and excellent service! Their cocktail was also very good. Came back twice during my short visit. If I lived full time in Oaxaca, this would definitely be my go-to.

Yelp
Our favorite meal! Wonderful service, Luis & Roberto were fantastic. Great atmosphere and just a perfect vibe. The food was incredible (tacos pewe, shrimp coctail, and the fish special with huitlacoche risotto were our favorites, but everything was delicious). Fabulous drinks and overall just a fun sweet spot.

Yelp
We spent a beautiful Sunday afternoon tasting some amazing Seafood dishes and drinking local Artisan beers. Our new friend Luis was a fantastic server and made our first meal in Oaxaca a memorable one.

Yelp
When in Oaxaca, I strongly suggest a visit to Sirilo Restaurant on Calle Amapolas #400 in Reforma. Sirilo is a brightly colored, warm, welcoming place with absolutely fabulous food and excellent service. Frankly, we opted for Sirilo only because it was close to where we were staying and we were too tired to explore other options. What a serendipitous decision! Luiz, our affable, knowledgable, and amusing waiter walked us through the menu and made a couple of suggestions, starting with a tasty bottle of reasonably priced Verdejo wine from Queretaro. For entradas, he convinced us to try tuna ceviche (for me) and a shrimp taco for my dining partner. We both followed that with the grilled mahi on a bed of risotto and sautéed mushrooms, with a small side salad of wild greens. All of the seafood was fresh and cooked to perfection. The greens could have been picked that morning, and had a delightful dressing with a subtle citrus flavor. Our taste buds were truly dazzled! Make sure to save room for dessert. The night we were there, they offered (among other choices) lavender ice cream topped with three small homemade donuts, and covered with a heavenly cloud of cotton candy. It sounds like a bit much, but trust me, it was amazing! The chef/owner Rene clearly knows his way around a kitchen. High quality food, creatively prepared, coupled with reasonable prices and superb service make Sirilo a "can't miss" experience.

Yelp
This place is amazingggg!! While in Oaxaca I got a recommendation to visit this place for great (and cheap) ceviche. I stopped by on Sunday evening before heading out the city to check it out. First, the place is very cute and not traditional (in its looks), which I loved. My friend and I ordered two guacs, an horchata, fish ceviche, vegetarian quesadilla, and the banana dessert. Everything was fantastic! My favorite was the fish ceviche - it was delicious and huge for the price of 50 pesos (I thought it would be small initially). The only downside is that service is veryyyyy slow. Be aware of that so you can visit when not in a rush.

Yelp
The menu is perfect journey through the gifts of the sea - civiches an other dishes of mariscos.i tried Aguachile Verde which was tart and spicy, and was perfect. Others had tostadas de pescado. The place has an amazing vibe. Now a light rain is falling, a shot of mezcal and music floating through the space. A Oaxaca moment outside the busy center.

Yelp
The taste was very good since I had not found a good seafood place in the city. I had the mango ceviche and it was delicious. My friend had the camarones al ajillo and it was wow.

Yelp
This place is awesome, quaint and a bit out of the way but worth it to try and find. The pulpo and shrimp tacos were great as were the ceviches. Very creative approach to seafood in Oaxaca!

Yelp
The best restaurant we ate at during our 2 week stay in Oaxaca City. The Taco Pewe was the most amazing taco I have ever eaten. Beautiful and exciting contemporary twists on classic Mexican cuisine. Also, the most reasonable prices. Even though the location isn't central it's truly worth the walk (about 30 minutes from the Zocalo) ~ atmosphere is also lovely!! A must during your stay in Oaxaca City!!
