The 38 Best Restaurants in Sydney, Australia | Eater

"The sourdough starter at Sixpenny is older than the restaurant (which opened in 2012). Nicknamed Bob, the fermented culture came from Oscillate Wildly, where Sixpenny owner Daniel Puskas previously worked. Beyond fresh loaves, it shows up in Sixpenny’s Yesterday’s Bread (blitzed leftover slices refreshed with coffee). The chef also created the mead vinegar custard with strawberry consomme and frozen raspberries, first introduced in 2016, which is unlikely to ever exit the menu given its hold over diners. While Puskas continues to offer guidance, current head chef Tony Schifilliti (Cirrus Dining) has put his creative signature on the menu, injecting his love of fermented ingredients into items like roasted koji ice cream or ink-sauce garum with fish. Since Sixpenny was awarded three hats in the 2019 Good Food Guide, landing a booking can be tricky. But you can always buy Schifilliti’s Cura seasonings from P&V Merchants, the city’s best bottle shop for filling your pantry. Must-try dish: Pick up the chef’s mushroom shio koji from P&V. It tastes like the Sydney alternative to Noma’s mushroom garum." - Lee Tran Lam

One of the best dining experiences I’ve had in Sydney. If you’re celebrating a special occasion, this is the place to go. The staff were attentive and the chefs came out to explain each dish, which felt like something out of a movie. The food was beautifully presented, full of flavor, and crafted with care. Highly recommend for a truly unforgettable night.

I spent some time deciding whether to give 5 stars, and in the end, I believe this restaurant deserves it. First, the service is excellent—truly top-level. The staff were attentive, professional, and very accommodating of my dietary restrictions due to allergies. They even offered thoughtful replacements, which I greatly appreciated. Second, the food itself was very good, though I did find the portions on the smaller side. I probably could have enjoyed one more course to feel fully satisfied. Third, regarding beverages, there is room for improvement. The original sake I received had been opened for over a week and had developed a sour, off flavor. Once I mentioned it, the staff promptly replaced it with a freshly opened bottle, which was much better. Lastly, the wine pairing could have been stronger. 🍷 It only began with the second course, and the dessert pairing felt a bit heavy with two intense pours (a bitter and a tawny). It might flow better if the pairing started from the first course, and perhaps just one thoughtful pour carried through both desserts—maybe even swapping in tea for balance. Overall, the combination of outstanding service and quality food makes this restaurant worth a visit, and with a little fine-tuning on the beverage program, it could be even more exceptional.

Located in Stanmore in a cute house. Sixpenny received 3 hats in 2025 and I understand why. Food was amazing and service was impeccable. We have been coming to sixpenny over the last 12 years and it never disappoints. The flavours are on pointe. Wines were matched perfectly and Vincent the sommelier was very knowledgeable. Thank you Ruby for looking after us. They even give you a card to celebrate your special occasion so that was a nice touch.

As someone who loves to look at the menu prior and knowing what to expect, this was exciting. George and the team were so welcoming, truly made the night special. The atmosphere was cozy and comfortable, and the food was so beautiful! I will be dreaming of the XO butter for weeks to come. Usually we never get dessert, but my goodness, every single one was phenomenal. Overall a fabulous experience and totally worth the money. Highly recommend, we will absolutely return! Thank you Six Penny 💛🙏🏻

Vincent took such great care of us from the beginning. The food and drinks were lovely; I can't complain about a thing except that the service was a bit slow, as there was quite a long wait between the main courses. Overall, it was one of the best meals I've had this year. Thank you, guys!

Absolutely delightful dining experience. We never managed to book with enough lead time so waited many years to finally enjoy this delicious meal. Loved the small number of tables, keeping the main dining area quite cozy. The dishes were outstanding and thoughtful.

I booked sixpenny for my husbands birthday. It was the most unique dining experience I have had. The food was very unique but tasted delicious and there were 7 courses. Each time a new dish was given to us it was passionately explained to us by either a waiter or chef. The waiters were very friendly. You dint actually get the menu until you leave, in a sealed envelope which is cool. They gave us a very cute birthday card too. The food was very fresh. I only found the 3 hour sitting too long but it was a great experience.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ If you’re hesitating — just go. This place is on another level. Highly, highly recommended!! I’ve dined at many hatted restaurants, including 3-hats , but this one easily tops them all. From the plating and flavour to texture, balance, ambiance, and the attentive service — everything was flawless. In my experience, many fine dining places start strong with entrées but lose their charm as the meal progresses. The mains often lack depth, and the overall experience feels too predictable. But here, it was a whole different story. Each dish built on the last — surprising, layered, and truly moving. It delivered a new kind of excitement that fine dining should offer. That said, there is one thing to keep in mind — the full course takes time. In our case, we were the second table to be seated, and we finished in about three hours. However, if you’re dining during peak hours when the restaurant is full, it could easily stretch to four hours. So plan accordingly, and take your time to enjoy every moment. I only wish I could give it six stars. One of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had. Highly, highly recommended

Yelp
Sixpenny ...I have ever experienced such intimate service. The staff were so attentive, knowledgeable (sommelier), intuitive or flexible. We couldn't fault our experience. It was a special evening for my husband and I. A belated birthday celebration for him. The whole experience was the epitome of finesse. We feel so fortunate to have Sixpenny as a local. And although, this was our first experience we will return! Hopefully the staff are reading my review. You guys were so professional, sharp and ..."Copy review Please

Yelp
Came here with a couple of friends for dinner and absolutely loved it. The ambience the service and most of all the food is amazingly good. After having been disappointed with top end restaurants in Sydney I was not sure what to expect but, this place changed my perception from the first mouthful right through to the end. It was also the first time I have seen people present the dishes that looked the same but one was vegetarian. The mascarpone butter is divine here and probably the best butter I have had in Australia. We had three seafood courses, a meat course and two dessert courses with amouse and petit fours to start and finish the meal. The seafood courses were great and cooked to perfection. The roast pork was really good too with intense rich flavour. The dessert was just amazing and so tasty I had to lick my bowl ;-) the warm petit fours at the end were like the perfect end to an amazing meal. Service and food combined it's probably the best place in Sydney I have been to. Happily come here any day.

Yelp
Came here for my birthday on Friday (which was a surprise) and I just have to say this place is AWESOME. I only go fine dining a handful of times a year, and I wish I came here earlier, because this is the kind of place that requires repeat visits. Sixpenny does the whole farm to table thing, as they have their own farm next to Berowra. It must be a damn good farm because everything here was damn delicious. They take a page out of Noma's handbook, utilising the best of Australian produce to make something definitively Modern Australian. Their service is great; super attentive and informative, and patient as well. The only thing is they are slightly stingy with their wine pour. Other than that, just a great experience all around. We had a party of 10 (had the room in the back) and we ordered the smaller degustation set. The first two snacks we had set the bar low...they really weren't anything special, one being salt and vinegar chips and the other Cucumber Pickled in Rose Geranium. The latter was not received very well, and honestly we think sixpenny does this on purpose because the rest of the dishes were fan-freakin-tastic. Seriously, if you wanna talk about going from 0-100 this is what sixpenny does once they bring out the Green Tomato & Cheese Gougères. From this menu, all you need to know is: Jerusalem Artichoke Scallop - DELICIOUS Eggplant with Burnt Onion - DELICIOUS Crab with Silky Macadamia and Camomile - OMG OMG OMG Potatoes Roasted in Fresh Mustard with Lemon Thyme & Spinach - DELICIOUS Marron with Tomato Butter & Fennel Pollen - OMG Pork with Cidered Garlic & Caramelized Witlof - OMG OMG Milk Curd & Honey - DELICIOUS (if you're not lactose) Poached Prunes with Plum & Jasmine - SEMI-DELICIOUS (not a prune fan) When dessert came, we were beyond stuffed...but after seeing the sixpenny chocolate cake (for my birthday) I had to have a taste and I do not regret it one bit. It's chocolate nougat, and if you've ever had a Three Musketeers, it's kind of like that in a cake, but much tastier. Awesome restaurant, one of the tops in Sydney.

Yelp
Wow! I had the set the bar high for this restaurant as had wanted to go here for a long time. It did not disappoint. It is an unassuming small place and you would easily miss this 2 hatted restaurant if you walked past. The service was impeccable. It is the small details that count. All the staff were lovely and the nice touches like bringing fresh napkins, constantly refilling the water glasses, cleaning up the water marks as they saw we were taking pictures, and even bagging the petit fours as we had an extra course of dessert and thought we would be too full. Personable and able to gauge the diner, it certainly elevated the evening. We went with the large menu which included canapés, 5 courses of savoury dishes and 3 courses of desserts, and an optional special dessert. The chefs present each course to you and explain the components of the dish. This is a nice touch. We were brought House made Sourdough Bread and Malt & Honey Bread. Good fresh bread is always appreciated. This was served with a mascarpone butter. Interesting and yummy. To begin we were served canapés of Lightly Pickled Cucumber With Rose & Raspberry which was fresh and crisp. Green Tomato & Cheese Gougeres. Very tasty and the choux puff was oozing with the delicious filling. I don't usually like pumpkin but the Pumpkin Scallop reminded of a potato scallop but with pumpkin instead and it was nice and crispy. Onto the Venison Tartare With Boudin Noir Baked Beetroot & Hazelnut. The venison was soft and tender, the Beetroot added a fresh zing to the dish and the hazelnut crumb gave it a wonderful crunch. Next was the Potatoes With Oyster & Raw Mushroom. It was not the most inventive dish and kind of paled in comparison to the other plates of food. It was a boiled potato topped with raw shaved mushrooms. The oyster emulsion that came with it was nice but not as exciting as it could've been. Spanish Mackerel With Radicchio & Fermented Cucumber is the next course. I wouldn't usually choose mackerel as my first choice of fish but this was utterly delicious. Moist and well flavoured it paired well with radicchio to add a bitter note to this dish. The sauce was rich and added a depth of flavour to the fish. Following this was Kangaroo Consommé With Smoked Eel & Turnip. The consommé had a rich depth of flavour and very meaty in taste. The eel was perfectly cooked and enveloped in turnip and topped with grated egg yolk. Again eel is not my first choice of seafood but I enjoyed this. The duck was replaced by Cowra Lamb With Pumpkin Sauce And Endive With Garlic And Pecans. Lamb was tender and melt in the mouth. The endive salad was crunchy and went well with the lamb. The dinner was rounded off by the following; Mead Vinegar Custard With Frozen Raspberry & Strawberry Consommé. The custard was silky, the bits of frozen raspberry gave it a great tartness and bursts of texture to this dessert and the consommé was nice and sweet. Well rounded it was my equal favourite dish. Reduced Milk Sorbet With Cucumber & Peppermint Granita was nice but I really dislike mint so although the sorbet was lovely and cucumber gave it an interesting twist, I had to pass all the granita to my dining partner so I didn't have to taste most of it. There was a base of apple purée. My other favourite dish was Mascarpone Ice Cream With Lime Jelly & Sweet Rice Custard. The ice cream was so smooth and creamy. A hidden treat of lime jelly gave it a sour note to balance the ice cream. I couldn't really find the rice custard. Topped with freeze dried mandarins, it was crunchy and zesty. We couldn't say no to the St Honore Torte (puff pastry, hazelnut creme patissiere, vanilla chiboust, profiteroles, winter truffles). The pastry was nice and crisp on the bottom. Wish there was more creme patissiere as it was really delicious. I think there might have been too much chiboust and it overwhelmed the dish a bit. Profiteroles were just right, crispy on the outside with a toffee coating and creamy custard in the middle. The truffles were the decadent touch to this dessert. Generous shavings on top it added a savoury and earthy element. Overall I would highly recommend this restaurant. The service was highly professional and thoughtful. The food was inventive and well constructed.

Yelp
My husband and I have been to Sixpenny for both lunch and dinner so have had the pleasure of having both the 6 and 8 course menus (and as mentioned by the previous reviewer, with all the little bits and pieces inbetween it is much more). The food is exquisite and imaginative and we love that the chefs often come to the table and explain what the dish is. The delicious bread is homemade and warm and comes with a mascarpone butter. Heaven! And we just love the cookie jar at the end!! The service is very attentive and the restaurant itself is simply furnished but very stylish. We're so lucky to have such a gem just a block away.

Yelp
With high profile restaurants closing their doors left, right and centre, one might have thought it was a bit ambitious to open a degustation only restaurant in a slightly less restaurant trendy suburb. But, sixpenny did it anyway. And, boy, I for one am glad they did. Sixpenny, named after the popular sixpenny restaurants of the 1850s, is a local corner restaurant, that is anything but. Seating approximately 30 people in the dining room, with a private room comfortably accommodating 8, this is an intimate outfit and it seems Stanmore's residents have embraced their new local. The space, while elegant, is understated and unpretentious. They say they don't want you to feel uncomfortable, as is sometimes the case in those 'fancy' establishments and I think they've achieved it. Warm woods, compliment cream walls. It's an upmarket 70s retro vibe in my mind. Thirty-something chefs James Parry and Daniel Puskas can tout some serious cooking credentials between them, having worked in international restaurants Noma and WD-50 as well as Australian favourites Sepia and Oscilate Wildly. Now do I have your attention? They offer 2 degustation options each evening, a 6 and an 8 course menu and they're happy to wine match for you, should you desire, or you may prefer to order your wine separately. Most wines come from NSW and ACT, by the glass or bottle. In keeping with their intimate feel, the dishes are brought to your table by the chefs themselves. A nice touch. Our 6 course degustation menu (which I realise looks like more than 6 courses by using dot points, but trust me) is as follows: * Cheese & Onion * Rye Toast * NZ Yam * Malt Chips * Duck Tongue * Knuckle Sandwich * Pickled Pear, Ricotta and Rose Geranium * Crab, silky Macadamia and Camomile * Snapper, Pumpkin Seed Cream, Soft Leaks * Leg of Lamb with Sweet Onions and Grassy Herbs * Chewy Rubarb, Yoghurt Whey Meringue, Camomile Ice Cream and Honey * Native Ginger, Poached Green Strawberries, Rosella * Beetroots, Mead, Steamed Brioche and Honey Ice Cream (an addition, compliments of the chef - thank you!) *Malted Rye (OMG - can I say - It's like an amazing adults version of Milo and ice-cream)! * Lamingtons, Cookie Jar One word. Stunning. In every way. From the service, to the presentation, to the flavours. So, make your booking now and experience a degustation to remember.

Yelp
Recently opened, this small venue is a great find. Used to be the Codfather and seems to be founded by the same guys who do Oscillate Wildly in Newtown, the 8 course degustation is fantastic.Of course I say 8 course but if you include the tasting plates and bits and pieces that come with the degustation, it ends up being around 11 courses, so plan for around 4 hours. We didn't do the wine matching, but 99% of the wines are Australian and the ones we were recommended were great. Favourite was the crab with macadamia milk and the beef - oh and the salt and vinegar chips - so thin you could see through them. It's relatively expensive - $125/head when we went but really worth it for the flavours. They have their own herb garden, greenhouse and beehive out back as well, love the local flavour. Service was very attentive and the chefs came out to serve and explained what each dish was. Fantastic.

Yelp
Sixpenny is an amazing restaurant. We went for a special occasion and indulged in the 6 course menu with matching wines. The food was absolutely faultless. Amazing flavors, techniques and presentation. The crab and macadamia dish was a particular highlight. My only gripe with the night was the woefully meager pours that are served for the matching wines. It was downright stingy. most pours wouldn't have been more than about 30ml... wtf? barely enough to take 3 sips and enjoy the match. I really do recommend that everyone go to Sixpenny - however if you do, buy your wine by the bottle. Their extensive (and pretty reasonably priced!) wine list will give you much more satisfaction than doing the "matching wines" option.

Yelp
We had a great 6 course degustation here a few nights ago! We've been to many of Sydney's best and the food here stacks up. The matched wines were pretty decent too - though they lose a star because the pours were the skimpiest EVER! Easy to forgive though considering the food and the amazing staff. Got out of there for $450 for two. Update: $450 for two, not $350...

Yelp
Pretty enjoyed the snacks! Green tomato melt excellent with cheese. My favourite dishes are macadamia crab and pork. Silky macadamia merged with crab in a fresh and sweet way. You can even feel the crab is alive in your mouth, seriously. Also, caramelised witlof tastes amazing with pork! These two are amazing!! Not used to kangaroo consommé. The desserts were not very impressive, but not too bad!

Yelp
Wow. Amazing. This restaurant can rival the best in the world, I think. It is a set tasting menu and they don't reveal to you what is on the menu in advance. They'll just start bringing out dishes and each one is insanely delicious. Everything from a delicate sliced apple salad to veal roast. The meal ended with this dessert of roast pumpkin in honey. I can't stop thinking about it. All I want to do is talk about how good this food was. Expensive, but well worth it if you're splurging. Service was also impeccable and setting was small, intimate.

Yelp
Spend the damned money and come here. The food and service are first class as ranked against ALL the world. Its a 6 or 8 course fixed menu and the wine pairing is an inexpensive way to sample some unusual wines in a reasonable portion. You can check website for example menus, and you have my word that its top notch eating, not a dollar wasted.

Allan M.

Yelp
Fourth visit here and perhaps the best food yet. Sixpenny continued to challenge itself and rise to new heights . Tried the smaller 6 course menu as you get bigger hits of the dishes we like. The raw mushroom and potato dish memorable, the roast smoked duck breast sensational. The combination of flavour, texture, variety and balance fantastic and friendly natural efficient service from staff who want to be there!

Andrew P.

Yelp
This is definitely a special restaurant. The front room where we ate was intimate and not too dark or noisy. I had the matching wines which gave me an experience of wines from around the world I have never experienced. The food was delicious and it was novelle having the chef bring it to the table and give a description. The quality was heavenly. Currently the best dining experience I have had for many years. If you are looking for a special date night this place is recommended
