7 Great Drive-Thrus For When The Outside Is Too Much

"It’s all things Chi-town at this hot dog and burger joint in Avondale Estates. Staying in your car means you’ll miss out on the Chicago sports team memorabilia plastered on the walls inside. But you’ll still get the most important thing: a Chicago dog with the usual fixings (big slices of tomatoes, tangy sport peppers, you know the drill). The all-beef dog is thick and juicy, and one bite recalls visions of the Bean. Even if you're not hungry, keep Skips in rotation for their handspun chocolate milkshakes—creamier, smoother, and more reliable than that chain with the perpetually broken shake machine." - juli horsford, jacinta howard

The 14 Best Hot Dogs In Atlanta

"For more than 40 years, these Chicago transplants have been slinging their Vienna beef hot dogs and a handful of sandwiches from their location in Avondale Estates. The interior of the casual counter-service restaurant is laden with memorabilia from every Chicago sports team, so we really feel like we’re getting a Chi-Town experience every time we go. Before you get too bewitched with that Jordan poster (though we get it, that’s one beautiful wingspan), make sure to place your order for the meaty Chicago dog with the usual fixings (big slices of bright tomatoes, tangy sport peppers, you know the drill) and wash it down with a creamy chocolate milkshake. All we need is a Ditka lookalike, and our trip to Chi-lanta would be complete." - juli horsford, demarco williams

Get Your Hot Dogs Here, Atlanta

"Established in 1979, Skips is a Chicago-style hot dog staple in Atlanta. Beyond the obvious choice of a Chicago dog, which comes topped with mustard, relish, onions, pickles, peppers, tomatoes, and celery salt, try the quarter pounder Polish sausage served with sauteed onions, spicy mustard and a slice of kosher dill pickle. The classic grilled “jumbo dog” will also satisfy the craving for summer’s best sandwich." - Eater Staff

Excellent Chicagoland food! The Italian Beef sandwich was superb! Chicago dogs perfect! Very fresh tasting and flavorful. And the Peanut Butter shake was the bomb! Love it!

2025-1 Update: As promised, I came back for the Italian beef… dipped, with hot peppers. It was just as I remembered from Chicago, although I wouldn’t get dipped….the bread dissolved making it a fork and knife operation. My wife had a tasty burger. Service and atmosphere is great. We will be back!!! Original 2024 review: Great place for you to enjoy some Chicago favorites in a Chicago styled fast food establishment. Great staff and food. I has a Chicago dog combo, and will be back for another of my favorites, the Italian beef. Many other items from wings and burgers to cheese stakes and polish sausage. Indoor and outdoor dining. I stopped by mid afternoon for a quick bite. Interestingly bathrooms are accessed from outside.

Came here for a late lunch during the week, and it wasn't too busy. Mad at myself for taking so long to get here. Loved the vintage decor inside. Gave it the real Chi-Town fan feel. Staff was fast and super nice taking orders. I got the Chicago style dog and an Italian beef. Both were amazing, and what I loved about the place were the prices being so reasonable! This is one of two places in the entire ATL Metro I've been to that do a Chicago-style dog proper justice. I'll be back.

Casual seat and eat diner. I got the Italian beef sandwich. My first time trying it. I wouldn't get it again. Not for me. My guests got the skip burger and hotdog. They liked it.

I used Skip’s catering for a large corporate family event that I organized and I can’t recommend them enough. The owner Gabe was extremely communicative and helpful throughout the planning process and was such a pleasure to work with. Definitely recommend these guys if you’ve got a picnic or event that needs some awesome burgers and hot dogs!

The young lady who took my order needs training on dealing with the public. It was a painful experience for me but wasn’t worth the personal stress to prove to her that she was wrong but I thought someone needs to know. I ordered a combo with onion rings and a drink. I had a long drive so the drink was most important but it appeared “after testing” all that there either needed more syrup or repair for some other reason they had close to no taste of the soda so I decided to opt for the sweet tea. I read one container said unsweetened so clearly I chose the other one because it made sense to me that it would be sweet so here I am whole my food is prepped having a difficult time with the drinks working for me. I went to the cashier and asked if it was time to add more syrup because they are all flat and she didn’t even take a breath before she said “that’s impossible because they were just taken care of” WRONG REPLY!!! Then I said well can you add some sweet tea and she said I was headed to do that and when she poured it in and I tried that one too it was the same as UNSWEETENED and as I was going to tell her she turned and walked away. No expression. No kindness. No understanding. No compassion. Just absolutely the wrong energy to take care of customers especially a new one/first time visiting. So I basically paid $12 for a combo and left the cup there. It was not a good experience and I’ve been in customer service for over 20 years and it’s definitely a sad day for any of us expecting what we give.

Google
I just met the Grandson of Skip. This is a very authentic place. I spent 12 years in Chicago! Eating the brat with side of onion rings.

Google
We love Skip's, we been enjoying it for 25+ years. Only fast food option in Avondale. Takes a little longer than Chick-fil-A, but made to order and always VERY hot. A little pricey, but I have heard they pay their staff a fair wage (can't confirm), and the food is always good...so we are grateful for them and the nostalgic atmosphere!

Yelp
Love this place! My go to combo is the Chicago Dog with Onion Rings! Always a treat! Friendly crew and fast service.

Pat D.

Yelp
This place used to be wonderful and reminded me of Home, but now it has fallen off tremendously. The food is tasteless and look at the difference from last year till this year and Italian beef quality. It literally taste like water. 2023 vs 2024

Yelp
3.5 ~ I had been wanting to try Skip's for four years now. My hubby and I originally thought we might end up in Avondale Estates upon moving to GA, so it would've been convenient. We ended up not moving to that area, and I forgot about this place for a little bit. Time passed and I had tried Baby Al's a few times - which I'm a big fan of and which is much closer to me. A few months ago, my mom and I decided to order a delivery lunch from here. We got the Italian beef dipped with cheese, a tamale, onion rings, and a pizza puff to share. Everything arrived hot and fresh even with the distance. The Italian beef was good and flavorful. It was not as big as the ones I get from Baby Al's though. The pizza puff was delicious. I know it's just a microwaveable good, but I hadn't had one in forever, so it was nice for the nostalgic factor. The onion rings were perfectly breaded and cooked but had no seasoning on them. Finally, the tamale was not at all what I expected. It was very small and not really impressive at all. It's not far off from the canned kind if you've ever tried that, just a step up on freshness. Overall, it was a decent meal. They do not seem to have mild sauce as I requested some if available, but none was given. I would get the Italian beef again and pizza puff if I'm in the area, but do not recommend the onion rings or tamales. The Chicago dogs on the site look good, but once again, I usually go to Baby Al's for my Chicago food fix. I still need to try Fingerz and Rickettes one day as I've heard good things about both places as well. Having lived in Chicago for 2.5 years, so far Baby Al's is more on point with what I'm used to, but this isn't a bad spot by any means. I would go with the Chicago dogs from what I've seen or Italian beef if you're in the neighborhood.

Yelp
I wanted the Maxwell St polish. Both were a little burnt but decent. Fries were not tasty. I doubt I'll be back and I would not recommend

Yelp
Been my favorite hot dog place for 40+ years. We moved away and went other places and now my daughter lives in Avondale and it has become our spot to meet. Lots of change but Skips is still here. And still as good as I remem

Yelp
5 stars for hotdog, 3 stars for service, and 0 stars for Italian beef sandwich. Being my first time here, you would think that the cashier would let you know or tell you the offerings since the sandwich comes dry with no onions, etc. Mine came with nothing but two big green peppers since I didn't want the spicy peppers. I was very disappointed considering most of the reviews raved about the Italian beef sandwich. The au jus was spicy, and the beef was tough, and nothing more than sliced roast beef from a deli market. Also, based on the other pictures from reviews, my sandwich was very skimpy on the meat. The fries were decent, and the hot dog was really good.
google avatar

Zane S.

Yelp
The hot dog is good and my son enjoyed his burger but I ordered potato salad and received cole slaw instead. When they handed me the food, they even said that they included a fork for the potato salad. I already had cole slaw on the hot dog. I was looking forward to the potato salad. They need to double check things. There was no one in front of or behind me in the drive-thru line.

Yelp
Came here with my husband for lunch on the weekday. It was busy but the line and service were fast and staff were very friendly and helpful! We ordered the chicago dog, fries, and corn dog. Everything came out hot and fresh and tasted great! Definitely come back again to try other things! Plenty of seating inside and some outside.

Yelp
This place is great, food is good, they have that quick drive thru feel. Prices are inflated and they are al a cart for soon items. Their inside is busy also but I have been served with food customer service when I have gone. Service is quick basic ambiance on the inside. Polish is definitely Chicago style

Yelp
I was driving down Avondale Rd leaving the post office and was ready for lunch and noticed a sign at Skips that said Veggie hot dog combo. I had no idea they offered veggie hot dogs and decided it was the perfect fast meal. Truly hot dogs or hamburgers are good because of the toppings and I made a mistake of only ordering mustard on my veggie dog. It was okay but nothing to rave about. The bun was actually pretty good, very good quality. The fries were seasoned well and the root beer was good. Overall it was an okay meal for lunch. If I go back I would definitely add more toppings. The veggie sausage combo was $13.99. I could definitely save money buying my own veggie sausage, bun and toppings and having a meal at home but sometimes you're in a rush and don't' have time to cook.   I heard good things about Skips and I'm sure I would love it if I ate meat.   Service was also great, very friendly! I love that you have a drive through option, very convenient.

Yelp
Hmmmmm the employees appeared really great, the food hm okay I guess but the price... 6 hot dogs a fries and drinks $65
google avatar

Talisha H.

Yelp
I used to love Skip's, being from Chicago it was a welcome taste of home but it's really gone downhill over the last couple years. Cold food on several occasions, declining quality, dry/stale buns. Also, price increases which seem a bit excessive and the "sauce policy" is just cringe. Hopefully they get it together, because they used to be something special.

Yelp
Food excellent service was first rate ambiance is homey And prices are reasonable!!!

Yelp
Being from Chicago, I've been looking for Chicago style hotdogs and good Italian beefs. Today I came across Skips and had to stop in. They have a parking lot around the restaurant and additional parking in the back. There's also free street parking. I was here around lunch time and it was kind of busy, but I was able to grab a table inside. They have indoor and outdoor seating. I ordered the Chicago dog combo. The hotdog was pretty good. I wish I ordered a milkshake instead of getting a soft drink. But next time I'll try a milkshake and Italian beef. Skip's is also located across from a park with plenty of open space for walking and sitting to enjoy the day!

Yelp
Came for my first Chicago dog, it was great! Friendly service & good prices too. Will come back!

Yelp
The restaurant offers high-quality, fresh food and exceptional customer service. It provides excellent choices for children and serves authentic Chicago hotdogs. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Can you say.... Great service all around! The hospitality here is amazing. From the time we entered the door, we were greeted by staff. The place was clean and sanitary. For a Saturday afternoon, we received quick service with fresh food. The drink station was clean. Dining room and lobby cleaned. Prices extremely affordable.

Yelp
Came through the drive as we were in the area on the way home. They have hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken tender baskets and more. We order two skip burgers and a skip burger combo. Burgers we're good but not mind blowing. Burgers come with everything: tomatoes, lettuce, onions, mustard, and ketchup. Fries were soft yet perfect about of salt. Will try the hotdogs and corn dogs next time.
google avatar

Tank J.

Yelp
Great concept! Food was accurate and stayed warm until we were ready to eat. Alot of menu options to choose from so it is perfect for family dining. They were pricey for the amount of food...no leftovers for your typical meal. I paid $28 and got 6 wings, a hot dog with mustard, 2 orders of fries, a deluxe burger, and 2 drinks. I'll return but not often.
google avatar

Lili J.

Yelp
I have been going here my whole life and it is always great. I have stopped eating beef but when I did I loved their hot dogs and it was always delicious. I love getting their milkshakes because they are a perfect consistency and so good! I have also been getting the chicken tender baskets lately and they are also so good. They are so nice and crispy and delicious. Also the fries, it is worth a trip just to get the fries. The fries are always good and perfectly crispy and nicely salted. Also, the service is always great both in-store and ordering through the drive-thru. It has been around for so long because they do simple food but they do it well.

Michelle W.

Yelp
Above all luv their hotdogs and philly cheese steak sandwiches. Food is always hot cause it's made to order. My only complaint is the customer service on the drive thru. (Chrissy) she goes by the name Chris and says "How can I help". Can often be rude at times. I don't know maybe she family. Customers deserve the utmost respect never forget that.

M S.

Yelp
Amazing! I ordered two pizza puffs with an Italian beef and fries. My order arrived hot and within 30 mins and was very fresh. I very much enjoyed my food. Thank you.
google avatar

Haley T.

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick lunch with my boyfriend. We heard good things about Skip's and wanted to give it a try. Service was good and fast! Food tasted good and the hot peppers perfectly balanced the savory flavors of the Polish dog. Good food overall. Be warned - lunch time is busy here! My boyfriend and I will for sure be back next time we're craving a hot dog.

Yelp
Now I'm not from Chicago, only visited. I would say the quality of this food was just as good as anything I had in Chicago. I have to say for once, Atlanta got something right with this. The Italian beef was fantastic. The Italian sausage was cooked well, and the Italian beef was plentiful and tastee. I would compare it to be just as good as any Italian beef combo sandwitch I've ever had. Then I had a tamale Supreme. Now, I will admit as I began eating it, I was a bit confused. The chili was great, but I was beginning to think there was no tamale. However, that was quickly solved after a short discussion with the staff. Turns out it was in the bottom of the cup. The combination of the tamale and chili was heavenly. My tastebuds were happy as I enjoyed my selections. The decor of the place is obviously Chicago themed. If you are from Chicago, this place might just make you a little homesick. I'm glad I finally visited after it was suggested to me by a friend.

Yelp
When I'm looking for my Portillo's fix this my go to. Cheap, tasty, and I love that their dip has a little spicy kick to it.
google avatar

Marlowe G.

Yelp
First time customers and really loved the portion size of the fries and Chicago style dogs. Everything tasted great! The employees were quite friendly and they get the food out to you quickly. Loved seeing how much history is within the restaurant and loved all of the sports memorabilia. Plus, they keep the place clean, well stocked, and organized. Will try again soon!

Yelp
Great food! Great Italian beefs. I've lived in Chicago and miss the beef combo sandwich's. Is there a bathroom on the premises??? Hands get dirty

Yelp
About 6 weeks ago, R wanted a Chicago dog for lunch, so he looked in Yelp and found Skip's Chicago Dogs in Avondale Estates. Guess where we went? Yep - Skip's! Skip's Chicago Dogs has a free parking lot large enough for all of its customers, plus there is a drive thru window. Customers dining onsite can sit at any of the multiple tables outside that have large umbrellas that provide shade. Customers can also site inside, where there are a lot of tables. The restaurant is generally clean, and, while we were there an employee was busy refilling the napkin dispensers, sweeping the floor and wiping off tables. This is a very popular restaurant, and the employee taking orders at the counter was very quick and efficient, and so the line of customers was constantly kept moving. After looking over the busy menu, R ordered two Chicago dogs, and I ordered two Chicago dogs and onion rings. Curious about seeing tamales on the menu, I ordered two for us to share. We sat inside at a table for two people. Within 15 minutes, our orders were called out and we picked the food up at the counter. Each of our orders came in a plastic basket lined with drip-proof paper. The Chicago dogs were hot (temperature wise) and good, with the usual mixture of flavors going on. I didn't care for the onion rings because they tasted and felt greasy. The tamales weren't wrapped with corn husks, but the masa and the meat both had good flavors. There are so many other things on the menu to try, such as burgers, Italian beef, Polish sausage, Bratwurst, Philly cheesesteaks, grilled chicken, chicken tenders and wings, to name some items. Unfortunately we don't live close to Skip's, so it may take some time before we come back.

Yelp
Great food always miss this place haven't been in a while gotta go soon I always get Chicago hotdog and Italian beef yummy
google avatar

Ann W.

Yelp
Still a four. Couldn't decide between the phill cheesesteak or the Italian so I ordered both and had half of each with an order of fries. Other reviewers said the cheesesteak was small with not a lot of meat and I agree. The flavor was fine but it was all bread. I'd happily pay a dollar more and get more than 3 bites of meat. The Italian had a lot of meat. I added both hot and sweet peppers to mix it up. Definitely did not get 1.00 worth of peppers, see picture. The sauce on the side was not too full of spices but actually really bland and a different color?? Fries look to be hand cut and were the standout of the meal. Not a place I'd visit more than once every other year or so.
google avatar

Coliprime 3.

Yelp
Great food but could really use some more Union rings. The Philly cheesesteak is very well seasoned also.
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
Nice decor, authentic Chicago dogs and Italian beef. The dipping sauce on the Italian beef was a little on the spicy side, not portillos, but overall pretty good. But. Just remember to keep the antacid pills handy.
google avatar

Wes M.

Yelp
Stopped here with my kids for lunch the other day. We just moved from Chicago three months ago and were hankering for some favorites from our home city. Suffices to say the place is legit--Great Beef with sweet/hot and dipped with hot dog and pizza puff for kids. We met skip and he was very kind and gracious to us. Despite being busy, the service and food was great. If you don't like this place, you don't like Chicago food :).
google avatar

Nathan H.

Yelp
I really wanted to give this place a 4.5 or 4.7, but since that isn't possible I rounded up. I had a hankering for a Chicago dog after hearing a podcast talk about them and I had not had one in several years. A quick google search told me Skip's was just down the street from where I was working in Decatur. I decided to give it a try, and I was not disappointed. There were 2 others in front of me in line, but when it was my turn, I ordered the 2 Chicago Dogs combo with fries and a root beer. The gentleman who took my order's name was Skip. I assume he owns the place. After ordering I asked him about the cheesesteaks. He says they're great, and before I have a chance to ask, he says "We serve them on Amaroso rolls!", so I knew immediately I would be coming back to try them. Skip nad the rest of the staff were super friendly and provided good service throughout. A few short minutes later, they called my order number and I went to the counter to pick up my lunch. The dogs looked GREAT. They are served on poppy seed buns, with mustard, relish, sport peppers, a pickle spear, tomatoes, and of course celery salt. They came in a basket with fries. These dogs were amazing. All beef of course, & they tasted just how I remembered and expected. Great flavors from the whole garden, the dog and bun made for awesome entrée. The fries were hot and perfectly salted to compliment the dogs, so this first experience was definitely 5 stars. Two days later I returned for my cheesesteak. This time Jesus took my order. While not quite as exuberant as Skip, he was also friendly and polite. I ordered the cheesesteak combo with a root beer. Again, just a few minutes later my order number was called. I retrieved my basket from the counter but was a little less impressed with the appearance. The sandwich looked good of course, but the large Amaroso roll was not full as I expected. Instead, the meat barely filled half the bun half full. The basket also came with fries. I took a bite of the sandwich and it was VERY tasty. I loved the simplicity of onions, cheese, and beef melted together in a warm bun. The bun was perfectly toasted and had some sort of butter or something on outside that made my fingers a little greasy. As I continued to eat through the sandwich I was never disappointed. It was warm and flavorful to the last bite and after finishing my fries and my drink I left satisfied. I would probably rate my second trip a 4, because everything was great, but I really would like to see more meat in that sandwich. Maybe offer a "double meat" option for a couple bucks more? The prices are very reasonable and fair for what I received so I would definitely be willing to pay the upcharge for a bigger sandwich. All in all - Skip's is great and will be a regular stop for me anytime I'm in the area.

Jodie G.

Yelp
My husband and I were looking for a place that served authentic and Chicago-style hot dogs and Maxwell polish sausages. I'd really missed Mike's in Sandy Springs where we'd gone for almost two decades. The great reviews brought us here, but the food, service and atmosphere exceeded our expectations, so we'll definitely be back! Elated to have found a new "hot dog" home!
google avatar

BeerMe S.

Yelp
It's just an awesome place to get a great hot dog Many varieties to choose from. Also has a good selection of beers! We have been lots of times and never disappointed

Yelp
This pic does this bratwurst no Justice. I ordered this through Uber eats it came to my house so hot and delicious the bun is so soft the broth is flavorful and the sauerkraut is so good but not too sour. The onion rings were to die for that is the reason there is only two left in the picture I eat them all so quickly that I almost forgot to photograph. Food so good that a food blogger forgets to take a picture.
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
Great food. Esp the Chicago dogs. Nice people. Friendly service. Always fresh. Consistent. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Franco C.

Yelp
Love the fact that it's Chicago food. But, the service is pretty bad. I used to go here religiously, but it has been very bad the last few times. I paid for things I didn't get, the meat was very dry, knawing on bread more than any meat or food, feeling more like Arby's than the old Skip's. And they are apparently the only 'Chicago-style' restaurant on the planet that doesn't know what Giardiniera is. I may eat here again because Atlanta has no other Chicago options, but that is the only reason. Sadly, Mike's Chicago Hot Dogs in Sandy Springs closed, they were 10 times better than this. There's a place in Alpharetta that is far better. Skip's is not all that great, used to be a lot better.
google avatar

Rebecca W.

Yelp
Skip's is legit as it gets. They are an old Avondale Estates mainstay and have been here over 40 years. They have a drive through, outdoor seating, and indoor seating, so you can dine however you prefer. Everything is absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced. You can never go bad here. They're most famous for their Chicago style dogs and Italian beef. They also have some other Chicago classics like a pizza puff. I've never had anything I disliked from Skip's. Their staff give great service as well. The cheesesteaks are delicious and served BURNING hot with real slices of meat, none of that steak-umm stuff you get at some other spots that serve them. Not to mention the Amoroso bread!!! The Chicago dogs are served authentic as you get, truly dragged through the garden. My only regret is that I lived nearby for so long and only stopped by a handful of times! I'll keep coming back though!!

Jacob T.

Yelp
Some of the best food in the area many kosher/halal options. Their service is without a doubt the best in a 20 mile radius with a great atmosphere to top it off

Yelp
Went after passing this place a million times and always seeing a line - the peppers for sure make it - exactly what i wanted and served by skip himself at the drive thru :-) super quick and priced well.
google avatar

Gary P.

Yelp
Haven't been back to Skip's in several years so I gave them another try. No difference: the food is great and the service is terrible. If anything, it's gotten worse. It used to be friendly-slow and now it's surly-slow.

Barry A.

Yelp
I pulled in after driving 15 minutes to get there. The lights went off as I am sitting in front of the order screen. They flat out refused to serve me saying there closed. They obviously don't care about their customers anymore. Sad because I have been going there since it was opened .

Yelp
I really loved the food, cozy fast food with a classic warm feel. 10$ will get you full here. Staff is super friendly. Always had a soft spot in my beer for this place.

Pretty good hot dog joint! I'm not a big hot dog eater but this was right by my air bnb and I wanted to get lunch. Decided to get a Chicago dog with onion rings. Lady who helped me was very friendly. Food came out in a few minutes and was pretty tasty. Overall a good lunch experience.

Yelp
Spot on Chicago Dog at this place!! From the 'proper steps' that the toppings should be put on to the color of the bright green relish.... PERFECT! We are so glad we found this place! The Italian Beef Sandwich was awesome too... really delicious, and totally Chicago-inspired! The fries were good but not crinkle cut lol... no worries there. Check out this great place... it has all the Chicago fans decor from Bears to Blackhawks Yayyy!! Ofcourse, if you're an Atlanta Braves fan, that's okay... you'll love the food here! And, we southern transplants cheer for the Braves when they're not playing the Cubs! Go have lunch here.... we will be back! Plus, I need to try the Slaw and Potato Salad. ;)
