I really wanted to give this place a 4.5 or 4.7, but since that isn't possible I rounded up. I had a hankering for a Chicago dog after hearing a podcast talk about them and I had not had one in several years. A quick google search told me Skip's was just down the street from where I was working in Decatur. I decided to give it a try, and I was not disappointed.
There were 2 others in front of me in line, but when it was my turn, I ordered the 2 Chicago Dogs combo with fries and a root beer. The gentleman who took my order's name was Skip. I assume he owns the place. After ordering I asked him about the cheesesteaks. He says they're great, and before I have a chance to ask, he says "We serve them on Amaroso rolls!", so I knew immediately I would be coming back to try them. Skip nad the rest of the staff were super friendly and provided good service throughout.
A few short minutes later, they called my order number and I went to the counter to pick up my lunch. The dogs looked GREAT. They are served on poppy seed buns, with mustard, relish, sport peppers, a pickle spear, tomatoes, and of course celery salt. They came in a basket with fries.
These dogs were amazing. All beef of course, & they tasted just how I remembered and expected. Great flavors from the whole garden, the dog and bun made for awesome entrée. The fries were hot and perfectly salted to compliment the dogs, so this first experience was definitely 5 stars.
Two days later I returned for my cheesesteak. This time Jesus took my order. While not quite as exuberant as Skip, he was also friendly and polite. I ordered the cheesesteak combo with a root beer.
Again, just a few minutes later my order number was called. I retrieved my basket from the counter but was a little less impressed with the appearance. The sandwich looked good of course, but the large Amaroso roll was not full as I expected. Instead, the meat barely filled half the bun half full. The basket also came with fries.
I took a bite of the sandwich and it was VERY tasty. I loved the simplicity of onions, cheese, and beef melted together in a warm bun. The bun was perfectly toasted and had some sort of butter or something on outside that made my fingers a little greasy. As I continued to eat through the sandwich I was never disappointed. It was warm and flavorful to the last bite and after finishing my fries and my drink I left satisfied.
I would probably rate my second trip a 4, because everything was great, but I really would like to see more meat in that sandwich. Maybe offer a "double meat" option for a couple bucks more? The prices are very reasonable and fair for what I received so I would definitely be willing to pay the upcharge for a bigger sandwich.
All in all - Skip's is great and will be a regular stop for me anytime I'm in the area.
