On the Grid : Skosh

"When Skosh opened in 2016, word quickly spread around the city. By 2017, word had spread nationally when Jay Rayner, The Guardian's top food critic, encouraged the people of London to jump on a train and visit this gem of a restaurant. He wasn't wrong, the food is am-az-ing. Skosh means "a little" and all the dishes are served in the form of snacks and small plates. Order away until you can take no more but remember to keep room for dessert!" - Abell Design

"This bright, lively restaurant is still one of the hottest tickets in town, and it's easy to see why. Located just up the road from Micklegate Bar – a 12th-century gateway to the city – its name comes from the Japanese word meaning ‘small amount’, referencing the menu's sharing-plates format. Six or seven dishes is about right between two, with each one incorporating bold, precisely balanced flavours with real skill. Indian cuisine has a palpable influence on the cooking, but so does the rest of the world – with dishes like masala monkfish and the superb hogget 'shawarma'." - Michelin Inspector

An unforgettable dining experience. We ate at 7 on a Wednesday evening and the restaurant was abuzz with the gentle clatter and clammer of contented diners. And crikey Moses did they have reason to be. The food was exemplary. We ate mackerel, chicken, seabass and tempura broccoli. The latter was so good my girlfriend ordered a second portion it really was as good a vegetable dish as I’ve ever eaten. Even the bread and butter was drool worthy! Impeccable wine pairings. No room for dessert. Our waiter was knowledgable and attentive without being overtly intrusive. A perfect combination. This place is most certainly worth the hype. We’ll be back.

Surprisingly bad. I went to this restaurant with my girlfriend to celebrate and had high expectations considering the high price and good reviews (including a Bib Gormand from Michelin). Ordered £120 worth of food, with most of it being mediocre/passable at best. All the food looked good but tastewise some were sorely lacking. The onion flatbread was good, the crispy lamb belly was great and the tempura broccoli was amazing. On the other hand the fried chicken massaman was chewy where fried chicken should be crunchy, the jersey chaat was tough and just tasted like boiled potatoes, the koftas were passable but I’ve had far better in York for far cheaper, the pork belly tasted like cheap Peking duck (even though the meat itself was obviously high quality). The mackerel pho was downright terrible; soft skin on the mackerel, watery, tasteless. Portion sizes were small, but this is to be expected in a fine dining establishment. The service itself was good, our server was attentive, but we were served food on chipped plates on three separate occasions (I only bothered taking photos the second and third time because I was so surprised at the low standard). Given the high price, this is unacceptable. The restaurant atmosphere was quite good generally, very modern, although some of the decor was very tacky ( gorilla head lightbulb, pig ). I’m personally ambivalent on the open kitchen. Overall, not worth the high price, other restaurants in York offer better food for cheaper. Fine dining is supposed to justify the high price and small portions with exceptionally tasty food, and the food at Skosh wasn’t that.

A brilliant night at a venue full of atmosphere. The food was brilliant and the wines on the menu matched the international twist of flavours. The staff were very engaging throughout the night and they were very knowledgeable on the menu. Overall, a brilliant night and we would go again if we lived closer!

The best food we have ever had ! The restaurant was full when we entered, it had a really nice noise and vibe. Diners looked really interested in their dishes. We sat at the bar and had a Kentucky Bourbon and a cocktail whilst we waited for our table. We were seated with a view of the kitchen, which was really fun and interesting, watching all the chefs work and interact from their stations. The food was served in perfect timings, allowing us enough time in-between each dish. The mix flavours in each of the dishes was incredible. Sweet and sour. Spiced and pickled. Crunchy and soft textures. I genuinely believe this the best food I have ever eaten. Nothing was overbearing or too much. It simply worked - every dish. 2 entrees each, 5 dishes shared- was perfect. Cocktails for my wife, and a half bottle of Italian red for me. The price, was a lot better than we expected, when the bill came. We were pleasantly surprised. We will be back, happy to drive from Manchester just to come to Skosh !

Decent small plates that invoke flavors of various dishes around the world. But quite honestly, it is pretty over praised. The plating and look of the food is amazing, but the overall flavors for many of the more ethnic dishes are almost there but miss the mark. The flavors feel incomplete compared to the original dishes that many of the small plates are based off of. For the price that is being paid and the accolades that this restaurant has, it is fairly disappointing.

We had a delicious dinner for my husband’s birthday. Every dish was very good, however some were overly salty (coming from someone who loves salt!). We had about 2 starters each, and 5 of the larger plates to share, plus one dessert. This all came out to about £130 (including two glasses of wine each. The service was good, with the staff taking note of the birthday boy and congratulating him. A spendy dinner, but would recommend if you want a bit of a treat!

Loved this place. Relaxed atmosphere. Fabulous staff with Amelia being particularly helpful and funny making a fuss of us on our wedding anniversary. The food was exceptional and not too much which meant we left full but not bloated 🎉🥂❤️

I have wanted to come here for some time and finally it materialised. I was amazed at how busy it was, but that didn't dampen my enthusiasm for what was ahead. The service was prompt and helpful as to how to approach the menu. It's basically a very alternative type of tapas experience. The opening dishes, namely the 'Hens egg' and lobster dumplings, were exceptional. Our lack of knowledge of the menu and its method of delivery meant we started mixing cuisines such as Thai and Greek. The food was still brilliant and enjoyable and I would just order differently on my next visit. A very good restaurant and concept.

Yelp
Spectacular food and service at this Michelin-rated contemporary British restaurant. I was curious to try this place as the food served here has an international influence, especially of Asian cuisine. The menu changes frequently and is viewable online. Plates are tapas style with a suggestion of ordering 3-4 per person. We had the following, all of which were unique and delicious. I would definitely recommend the famous "hen's egg" that had such an interesting combination of slow-cooked egg yolk puree on top and crispy cheese and leeks in black vinegar caramel on the bottom. Snacks: - hen's egg - summerfields, leek & black vinegar (£4.50) - padron peppers, smoked cods roe, crispy pork skin & chilli oil (£8) - puris of duck liver mousse with plum & furikake (£8) Raw: - sea trout cured in kecap manis with lime & peanut (£4) Vegetarian: - cauliflower pakoras - mint, tamarind & yogurt (£9) - beetroot & strawberry with sesame & nasturtium (£9) Fish: - miso glazed hake with courgette, feves & sunflower seed pesto (£18.50) Meat: - crispy pork belly with watermelon, peanut & nam pla (£12) Afters: - lanark blue 'trifle' - garden rhubarb, pickled beets, sorrel & buckwheat (£8.50) - yuzu pav' - raspberry, rose & pink peppercorn (£9.50) Reserve in advance if planning to dine here. Only 9:15 PM was available for the Saturday of our stay in York even when booking a month early. We were seated at a high table next to the open kitchen and were able to watch the chefs prepare the food. Almost all the tables were full during our two hour stay.

Yelp
Bit of a mixed bag review Pros; wait staff were incredible, friendly and knowledgeable The food was hit or miss but what did hit (tandoori pigeon, popcorn chicken) was really really good. Cons; I dined on a Saturday night and the part of town the restaurant in is basically drunk person central. Just gangs of roving screaming drunk teenagers as far as the eye can see. Made the walk here very unpleasant Fellow diners; for a Michelin recommended restaurant, half of my fellow patrons were belligerently inebriated. I almost got into a fight waiting to get my table. Might just be York in general, but it definitely marred my experience. I know it's not the restaurants fault, but it is what it is Price; a little inflated for what you get. Not terrible but definitely charging you for a Michelin experience you don't quite receive So overall: good but not great

Yelp
I stopped by this small lovely place for the end of my visit in York and it was an amazing place. We didn't have enough time to enjoy all the dishes so we tried 5 of them- fried califower, fried chicken, spicy beef tartar, chargegrilled Octopus and lamb belly. Fried califower- it's crispy outside but so tender inside with all the amazing spices. Fried chicken- it might be the most plain dish of these 5 but was pretty tender enough. Spicy beefy tartar- my favorite one from the 5. It's just so amazing with fresh beef and tasty sauce. Chargedgrilled octopus- it's a lit small compare to the price but the octopus was really tender. The lamb belly- it's tender and juicy. The only part I didn't like it that much was I still can taste the stinky part from the lamb. The service was great and the interior was cozy and nice. I really like this place and will come back if I am going to York again!

Yelp
To check out more pictures and detailed review on 10 Eats I Still Dream of (London, York, Edinburgh), please refer to my blog: https://laviedeshan.wixsite.com/home/single-post/2017/08/25/10-Eats-I-Still-Dream-of-London-York-Edinburgh This is the best surprise for me! Skosh is a small restaurant in York. If you don't pay attention, you will pass them by easily. I highly recommend either making a reservation or coming before the dinner rush and hope there's a table available. They serve small dishes and they recommend choosing 3-4 per person but you can easily order a lot more. We tried to sample as much as the menu as we could. Note: I think they change the menu a bit according to seasonal ingredients, but this is a bit of what we had.

Yelp
Small plates with fantastic flavors and textures! We had crispy pork, duck liver mousse, probably the best beets I've ever had, a raw scallop pizza, grilled octopus and lamb carpaccio. I don't think you could go wrong with any selection. We sat at the chef's bar and were impressed with how many cooks they had and how seamlessly everything was plated. The wine list was exquisite too. If you are in York, book a table at Skosh.

Yelp
Went here on our first night visiting York. Very inventive, modern tapas with a bit of an Asian flair. The food was all quite flavorful. Very friendly service with good recommendations for both wine and food. I might recommend reservations as there was limited availability when we dropped in on late Sunday afternoon.
