Unfussy and authentic, this Kansas City barbecue joint serves up perfectly smoked brisket and burnt ends in a casual, cafeteria-style setting.
"Slap’s, like Joe’s, is another KCK BBQ spot with long lines and counter service, but what makes it stand out are the sauces. Their spicy sauce is traditional BBQ with a kick, while the sweet one tastes overwhelmingly like honey, and we have indeed seen people drinking them like they’re cocktails. We prefer putting the sauces on the Mike Johnson sandwich that combines brisket, jalapeño sausage, and white sauce on a pretzel bun, or dipping some hush puppies or fries in them instead. Get here when they open at 11am, as food starts to run out after lunch (with burnt ends being the first to go)." - ryan bernsten

"Slap’s, like Joe’s, is another KCK barbecue spot with long lines and counter service, but what really makes it stand out is its two sauces. Their spicy sauce is traditional barbecue with a kick, while the sweet one tastes overwhelmingly like honey. We have indeed seen people drinking the sauces like they’re cocktails, but we prefer dipping hush puppies or fries in them instead. Get here when they open at 11am and order the Mike Johnson sandwich that combines brisket, jalapeño sausage, and white sauce on a pretzel bun. Just know that Slap’s shuts its doors as soon as they run out of food, so you’ll want to get there before 1pm to beat the lunch rush." - Ryan Bernsten
"Although Slap’s didn’t open until 2014, it’s already become a KC landmark thanks to its solid combo plates and classic feel. The restaurant is clean but casual: Expect Styrofoam cups, self-serve sauces (skip the sweet, score the spicy), and outdoor-only seating (for cold days, there’s a covered patio with heaters). It’s also a fine place to experiment with less-popular meats. Slap’s Polish sausage and juicy, thin-sliced turkey are some of the best in the city. There’s usually a line at lunchtime, but it moves fast — and the bar will serve you a beer while you wait." - Liz Cook
