8 Great Places to Drink Wine in Walla Walla | Eater Seattle

"Tasting at Sleight of Hand is a little like visiting your cool uncle’s den. Walls are decorated with colorful, trippy posters — mainly blowups of Sleight of Hand labels — hanging above shelves filled with thousands of rock LPs. You can pick a record from the collection and make it the soundtrack of the tasting, which leads to the occasional spontaneous dance party. Grapes from some of Washington’s most coveted regions, including Red Mountain, Snipes Mountain, and the Rocks, go into a diverse range of wines, including several single-vineyard syrahs." - Matthew Lombardi

I’ve been a member here for over a decade due to their incredible syrahs. I had never visited just loved the wine. But always great virtual communication and service. I moved to walla walla last year and have been so fortunate to meet this team and experience this winery. I mean this is as good as it gets. Great wine, great people, great location, great vibe. The co owner and winemaker Trey is the most approachable and authentic person you’ll ever meet. He’s always gracious to guests and treats everyone as a friend. The staff has always been kind, fun, and knowledgeable. The location is fun and welcoming. I only regret I didn’t meet these folks sooner. You’ll never regret a visit here or enjoying any of this wine. Full stop.

Google
Friendly casual winery with a chill vibe and great music. Dog friendly and they really mean it. Loved this place and loved the wine. Can’t wait to go to their Seattle tasting room.

Google
Awesome environment. Sleight of Hand has found a niche mixing music and wine. Great wine and patrons can pick records (there are hundreds to choose from) and they will play your choice while you comfortably relax in the lounge area.

Amanda Vandenberg

Google
Loved the atmosphere here, very different from the rest of the area wineries with their unique 90s music collection, themed artwork and records for sale, wine was great too!

Google
This was an added stop during our wine tour. Our guide mentioned the over 2000 vinyl records and my wife's eyes just lit up! We had our picnic lunch an a bottle of The Conjurer! Which was recommended by Tim, he actually recommended the lower priced wine and it was so delicious! We had to leave with a second bottle! Highly recommend! We will definitely visit them again! Such a fun and friendly atmosphere! And we had to leave with some swag!

Google
This is the friendliness most welcoming tasting room I've been too. If you like music and wine, this is your place. They have two tasting flights, Bordeaux varietals wines, and Rhone varietals. When I was there, they were only pouring the Bordeaux flight. I liked the Riesling and the Cab Franc dominate wines.

Valerie Paxton

Google
It's just a cool, relaxed place to drink delicious wine, listen to music and hang out with friends. We always feel welcome at Sleight of Hand.

Google
sending a review from Boise, ID. I had the pleasure of meeting Trey in a business setting where I got to try an assortment of his amazing wine. Trey was a delight to be around and such a book of knowledge and creativity. I plan to come to wallawalla just to enjoy the tasting room soon! Cheers Trey! -Emma from the boise co op

Yelp
Amazing ambience, service (Tracy) is great and super chill. Wines are interesting, robust and unique. Merch game is on point even if that's not the goal in a winery. Will try to hit their tasting room in Seattle next week too.

Yelp
This is a winery that has a lot of fun vibes and cool merchandise. The wines not too shabby either. The place is chill and fun employees. They also have some barbecue if you get a bit hungry.

Yelp
WOW this place is UNIQUE! Friendly (Maddie, Traci!, Tim, Pamela and NPH were awesome!!) for sure but their RECORD COLLECTION is outrageous. You heard that right. Select your record of choice and sit back and sip while enjoying your favorite classic tunes. Oh, great service and great wines!
google avatar

Takako S.

Yelp
If you love music and wine, this is your place. Layback atmosphere and good wines. You can look through their vinyl record library and pick your album to play! Many club members donated their old records and visit here to play while they sip their glasses, thought that was neat. They also have a bottle collaborate with Neil Patrick, who is an amateur magician, that was a fun red blend. We got a bottle of cab blend and Syrah, that was dry red and nice acidity. If you are not big fun in juicy red, but like to taste red, try this!

Yelp
Such a cool concept and idea! This is a winery for music lovers. The place is covered in the owner's music memorabilia collection (which skews heavily toward Pearl Jam). There is a record selection that you can browse through and choose a record to listen to while you sip your wine! It is pretty extensive and you would be surprised how many options there are! The service and staff was amazing! So kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. Knew plenty about the various wine flights. They have a variety of music inspired merch that are photoshopped plays on famous record covers or band logos. Definitely a great spot to hang out. Definitely close to being a perfect experience, and need to come back. The wine we tasted during our flight was still a bit young, and maybe that is just subjective. Definitely want to come by here again to sip and listen to more jams! Love this idea. Make it one of your stops in Walla Walla!

Yelp
One of our favorite wineries to visit in Walla Walla. The space (which was expanded in the past few years) is rock/turntable themed and is a great combo of retro plus modern. Service is friendly and knowledgeable. This past time we were there there was even a magician doing... you guessed it... sleight of hand! I was a bit reluctant at first but was definitely won over. The wine is probably why you are here - it's some of the most consistently delicious wine in Washington, or anywhere. Made with care and complex but accessible - I especially like the conjurer. We bought two bottles but were on our bikes so they kindly held our bottles until we could come back in a car the next day. And finally, as a queer/trans couple we always appreciate a place that makes it overly clear it's celebrated and okay to be who we are!

Greg C.

Yelp
Great experience at Sleight of Hand! Once the 2 customers who were doused in perfume (going wine tasting, really?) left we taken carte of by Madi who did an awesome job! She ran us through the current tasting flight while we browsed all the music memorabilia which is way cool! Also, thanks Madi for playing TNT for us, it brightened up a cloudy, rainy day.

Yelp
We loved this place! Charming outside patio with shade. Inside is modern mixed with retro and a splash of Pearl Jam (you'll see what I mean). Upon entering, we saw they were playing records from a turntable behind the counter and we were given the option to choose any record from their huge collection along the wall. It was so fun to peruse. They also have records for sale. Wines were good. I was impressed by the not sickly sweet reisling and the Psychedelic Sarah. We joined their club! They have a great story about Neil Patrick Harris so be sure to ask when you're there. Maddy was very fun and kind. Glad we had her as our sommelier.

Yelp
Welcoming and humble winery. Choose a vinyl and they'll play it for you. Cozy inside and out. Great wine. Affordably priced. All about you, the visitor, and your experience in Walla Walla ... the wine speaks for itself.

Yelp
This place is soooo fun! The wines are wonderful. But the staff and ambience make it special. They have an extensive collection of record albums. Every genre you can imagine. You can go in, pick out your favorite vinyl records and just rock out while you enjoy the wonderful wines. A very fun visit !

Yelp
This is an unpretentious place with a lot of character, and outstanding set of wines. The 6 person (plus one dog, shout out to the fluffy and friendly Ruby) operation is inclusive and welcoming. They have a strong sense of self and point of view that translates to an excellent set of wines and a very good time, steeped in vintage classic rock music. Of the 6 wineries we've visited so far in Walla Walla, this is by far my favorite.

Yelp
I have been a long standing lover of SOH wines. My husband and I stumbled upon this winery after a casual trip to Walla Walla. We loved the fun vibe and the wines were tasty. We enjoyed being a Club member and had fun at their functions. Over the past four years the hateful posts by the owner with regard to our country have been difficult to stomach. As a business person and a public figure, Trey has spewed hatred towards anyone that does not align with his views. He has verbally attacked SOH lovers that buy his wines yet do not adhere to his political perspective and blocked them because they love their country. You may enjoy their wine but this business needs some serious leadership that allows individuals from all parties and all races and all viewpoints to be a supporter without having to listen to his hatred. His last post with hashtags that ALL started with #fu$k (only he did not use the $) are outrageous. This is not a political issue but rather a business problem. If you want to appeal to the national and international public, you need to set aside your opinions and accept all who support your business because it is the people who buy your wine, regardless of their beliefs, that have fed your family and made you successful.

Yelp
We were in a rush and our wine expert (Tim I think) was really helpful about giving us quick descriptions. Wine was great,, ambience was great, service was great. I will be back when I have more time!

Yelp
This is such a fun place! Great music and fun stories about the wine and how it all started. Love supporting the smaller wineries, and this one is very unique is a great way. Check it out
google avatar

Yelp
This place is amazing. There are hundreds of records from Dr. Dre to Dire Straits, Taylor Swift to Talking Heads. You can select what you want to hear & get it on deck so you can listen while you wine taste. If you're more into that patio life, they've got that, too! We had a magician stop by our table to perform card tricks, too. At $10 a tasting, you get 6 wines which is a good deal. The rosé was my favorite but the wines were all enjoyable. They also waived my tasting fee because my two friends bought bottles, even though I didn't buy anything.
google avatar

Josh H.

Yelp
Excellent wines... Both of the Syrah's were some of my favorites. My wife is huge (Understatement) Pearl Jam fan and the the decor was suited for this (Understatement). Unique option to pick a record from their collection and have it play during your tasting. Can't beat the vibe and the vines. Service was top notch

Yelp
I've been here 3 times and it never disappoints. Traci is a great host and can expertly handle a large crowd, and the rest of the crew is friendly and and nimble. Beautiful outdoor area that allows your dog friends to hang out with you or snooze under a tree. I now own 3 of their tongue-in-cheek rock & wine tees - super clever designs!

PB D.

Yelp
Such a shame that politics has to get in the way of enjoying wine. Let's focus on our visit. We were last at SOH about 7 years ago and were impressed enough with the wines to join the club. Due to an overabundance of their wines in our cellar we dropped them a year or so ago and have missed them ever since. On our visit we found the staff attentive and the wines were delightful. We even had the opportunity to enjoy a little magic show. How did he know we picked the 9 of clubs? Bottom line good wines, although they aren't cheap, and a great atmosphere.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
Wow.. I listened to them on a podcast, saw reviews, read about them, went on their website to make a reservation and wanted see what their tasting room looked like for my upcoming visit to Walla Walla, so I came here. Putting a personal political views infront of your product as a retailer is so wrong. Even in their reply is with excuses and reinforcement of prior comment. When drinking wine, people want to enjoy the fruit, the winemakers skill, the story behind the vintage, and appreciate life itself. Very disappointed. I am not going to go. I don't need to pay for someone's opinion.
google avatar

Becky C.

Yelp
This is a really unique winery; rock n records. The woman was super nice and friendly, the tasting was cheap and we got to try 6 different wines! The venue was really cute, and the overall vibe was laid back and fun! I would definitely come here again!
google avatar

Yelp
Famtastic tasting room with plenty of outdoor seating and great wines. Extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great selection of music playing just for us. Neat t-shirts with rock & roll themes.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
Excellent wine! We came in yesterday and had our tasting with Tracy. She was great at describing the history of each wine, vineyards, and labels. Wonderful experience. Highly recommended. Love the theme. Archimage means head magician. He is an actual magician whom the owner loved and asked him to be on one of the labels, the wine named the Archimage is excellent. This magician also designed the other labels. The Conjurer (great wine) is a selfie of Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser), apparently he was one of the first members. The other labels are pictures of the owners family. Very cute :) I do not usually like very sweet wines so I was hesitant to try the Reisling. It was excellent. The Chardonnay was definitely one of the best I have had. My husband enjoyed all the Reds (Conjurer, Archimage, and Illusionist). Definitely worth the stop.

Yelp
During a wine weekend in Walla Walla, we stopped by Sleight of Hand Cellars. This place is always super busy. They play vinyl and have fun wines to try! An outdoor patio is available to sit while tasting.
google avatar

Robert J.

Yelp
Amazing wines, great tasting room! Rock and roll atmosphere and great attentive staff...can't say enough about this place, everytime we're in WALLAWALLA it's a must stop!
google avatar

Kathryn F.

Yelp
Each wine is lovely. I hate rosé and left with a case. The atmosphere in the tasting room may feel like your living room if you love mid-century modern, Pearl Jam, and 70s/80s alt rock/punk rock. It's a GenX Xanadu.
google avatar

Charlie N.

Yelp
Staff was arrogant and rude. They act as if they are doing you a favor by pouring the tasting you paid for. There are several other options nearby with better views and great service.
google avatar

Kelsey L.

Yelp
This place is awesome! It's super cute, they let us pick our own music, they were dog friendly which is always a plus for us. Tim was our wine server and he was very knowledgeable and super friendly and funny! There was another woman working that was great but I didn't catch her name. They made sure everyone was six feet apart and safe. Would totally recommend this place to friends.

Yelp
I would give this place zero stars if I could. We were visiting from out of town and got lost. We called to let them know that we would be late, and gave a precise ETA. We had to leave a voicemail, because after multiple attempts, nobody bothered to answer the phone. Upon arrival, we were told that our voicemail stated we were canceling our reservation - 100% NOT true; there were 4 of us who were present when the message was left where the exact ETA was stated. The person at the counter was EXTREMELY rude, and said they could not accommodate. One of the people we were traveling with reached out to the office to explain the situation, and the person who responded was even more rude, and implied we had been over served. We had been to 1 winery prior, which was 40 minutes away. Out of our group of 4, not a single one of us was even slightly intoxicated. I absolutely understand if a place is too busy to accommodate our late arrival, but there is absolutely no need to be SO extremely rude about it.

Yelp
What do you get when you mix some grapes, a vintage magician, and Eddie Vedder into a top hat? Sleight of Hand Cellars! This is the most fun I have had wine tasting ever. We hadn't planned to stop here, but since it was on the way back to the hotel, we decided to check it out, and so glad we did, as it was one of the top 5 best places of our Walla Walla trip. When we walked into the tasting room we were immediately warmly greeted by the server. She was extremely knowledgeable and passionate. The record player was booming some great classic rock hits, the walls were adorned by vintage magic posters, and you knew you had walked into a special place. It is definitely a different experience, but once you get sucked in by the magic of the place, the quality of the wine makes you linger. I loved all the wine, they were all very approachable and were delicious now and will be in the future. Because they each in their own right were so good, it's hard to pick a favorite. They were all very full of flavor, had long finishes, and well balanced. If I lived in the state I would be a wine club member in a second. The wines were also a mix of prices, some more affordable than others.

Yelp
Amazing young magician does Street Magic on Saturday's while we tasted fabulous wines! Overall a really good time.
google avatar

Judy H.

Yelp
Very tasty wine - enjoyed the 100% Syrah and bought a bottle. The labels are quite ingenious and loved the Dark Side of the Wine T-shirt. Tracy was a great resource for wine info about the Walla Walla valley, friendly and easy going. GO THERE!

K P.

Yelp
One of the most original wineries in Walla Walla, the vibe is amazing, and the wine bottles have character second to none. We had such a great experience and can't wait to go back again.
google avatar

Ron P.

Yelp
I've driven past this place more times than I can count. Just never had a reason to stop and went to other wineries nearby. Last week my wife said she had read something good and we should stop in. We did and it blew away my expectations. It's one of those underwhelming on the outside, VERY VERY FUN on the inside type experiences. You open the door and it's an homage to Pearl Jam/magicians. There's Rock and Roll playing, there's a very knowledgeable staff and some wines that exceeded my expectations. Maybe I'm just burned out with the standard tasting room at this point. But walking into a place that's a little more upbeat while retaining the knowledge and service was just a blast.
google avatar

Ivy D.

Yelp
This tasting room is like nothing you've ever seen. If you want a unique experience and great wines go to Sleight of Hand!!
google avatar

Vickie D.

Yelp
Our last stop of the day and a fun place! We ended up joining their wine club because we liked so many of their wines!.
google avatar

M P.

Yelp
After several stops, as a former bold red wine drinker who no longer handles reds well, this is the favorite. The riesling and roses are super worthy, and the location allowed for good conversation with like minded peers.
google avatar

Rick G.

Yelp
Wow wine was ok but the attitude of the lady running the bar certainly left a bad taste in my mouth. Pass on this place and give Saviah next door your business pleasant and far superior taste
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
This was stop #3 on a day of wine tours. Every where we had visited, the staff and owners were very friendly, knowledgeable and personable; Flying Trout, Balboa, Zerba. We walked into Sleight of Hand and there were only 4 other guests present. The owner was there talking with a couple of the other guests, and we were looking forward to hearing about the wine. So, we waited behind them for a tasting....and waited....and waited. Not once were we even acknowledged, with a "Hi", "Welcome!" or a "Hey, be with you guys soon!" type of statement. I have no issue with waiting for service, but even after the group was busy talking among themselves, the owner just continued to ignore us like we weren't there. Another salesperson ended up helping us, and the wine was just ok. I'd recommend trying any other winery in the area where people actually care when they have customers.
google avatar

Chuck B.

Yelp
A genuinely unique experience. Wine tasting to the sound of Van Halen, INXS, or whatever band out of the hundreds of vinyl options they have on hand. Although we liked several of their wines, the music actually became a hinderance to the experience. It was playing too loud for us to hear the server or have a conversation with our friends. Even with the distractions, we still purchased several of their wines. BTW, even Van Halen played too loud can hamper wine tasting. My kids are now going to start calling me "old."
google avatar

Carmen L.

Yelp
Nothing bad to say! Great service and wines were very good! Unique design! A must see while in Walla Walla!

Yelp
My wife joined the SOH wine club during her last "girls weekend" and this was my first trip to WW and to SOH. It was great meeting Trey and Jerry, and if you like tall, hot blondes with dreads... you're going to love the tasting room server, Jeanine. She's super friendly, knowledgeable about the wine, and easy on the eyes. The wine is just that good. Not much more to say about it than that. I have a feeling that this wine could end up as one of those "secret mailing list" wines that we all overpay for... but maybe not, Trey is super cool and I'd like to think that's not his style. The tasting room location is right across the street from the Marcus Whitman, although they're building a winery outside of town, next to Saviah Cellars, where they used to make their wine. PS.. if you meet Trey, don't make fun of Pearl Jam... he takes it personally.
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
What a fun place to visit, unlike any other winery I have been! We were introduced to these wines at a restaurant in San Diego and loved them. When we pulled up, there was food truck on site - fantastic idea guys! When you walk in, the rock and roll music is playing loud, they have a huge set of albums; all of their t-shirts mimick rock and roll songs and they have a turntable - is that cool or what? The tasting was fun and the staff there are great! A definite must on your list.
google avatar

Ruthy R.

Yelp
Wow! What a great experience. From the cardboard cutouts welcoming you to the cellar room with comfy couches and jute box! Excellent wines, entertaining and knowledgeable staff, delicious wines! Great selection of music and you can even choose which vinyl you would like played (depending on how busy they are). $10 tasting fee refunded with $20 purchase. Great selection of fun tshirts. Magnum and double magnums available for purchase. Staff took their time with our group and did an excellent job of explaining from where grapes were sourced and how many cases made...etc. Truly a wonderful experience.
google avatar

Randy B.

Yelp
I might be biased here as Trey Busch is one of the coolest winemakers around. Just take a look at his record collection and Pearl Jam memorabilia and you can tell he is a person who likes to Rock. His wines also Rock! Go check out the new tasting room at 1959 JB George Road. You will not be disappointed! Great article on the winemaker at http://blogs.seattleweekly.com/voracious/2012/02/walla_walla_trey_busch_pearl_jam.php

Yelp
Sleight of Hand has a quaint little tasting room conveniently located in downtown Walla Walla so it was one of our first stops after arriving into town for the Autumn Release weekend. They have decent wines with a great theme that revolves around magic. As it turns out, I've tasted their wine at the Magic Castle in LA and am really happy that Trey and his crew were able to get it poured and sold there. We visited during the Autumn Release weekend but they weren't doing anything special the afternoon we visited. Their wines are good but seem to play it safe and I tasted nothing exciting nor memorable.
google avatar

Chris F.

Yelp
Located on the downtown Walla Walla winery mini-strip, worth stopping in while you're strolling the town. From the website: Launched in 2007, Sleight of Hand Cellars inaugural release included the 2006 "The Magician", a multi-vintage wine called "The Spellbinder", and a "Right Bank" Bordeaux-style blend called "The Archimage". The wines were an immediate hit, and within months, Sleight of Hand Cellars was named as one of the "The Next Generation" of up and coming wineries in Washington State by Seattle Magazine. I adore the Magician, 100% Gewurztraminer: "...pale straw in color and highly aromatic, classic dry... aromas and flavors of crisp green apples, rose petals, and lychee-nut, and is the perfect pairing with spicy Asian foods."

Ali K.

Yelp
Horrible service. The woman there was extremely rude and with so many wineries to choose from, it's not worth going to this small, cramped, dark tasting room with no view and subpar wines.
google avatar

Tina T.

Yelp
What a dope ass place!! The lady was super nice, friendly, outgoing and overall great. The wine was delicious and my goodness.... we absolutely love the atmosphere! This is a must place to stop and check out for sure

Yelp
Hands down one of the most fun places to taste wine and listen to music in the Walla Walla valley! No need to be intimidated here... this winery has a funky, laid back music theme going on. The walls are lined with shelves of classic vinyl record albums; just ask to pick one out, and they'll play it on their old-fashioned record player for you! The owners have a connection with Sub-Pop records in Seattle, so new music arrives several times a year. And we haven't even gotten to the wine yet! You'll enjoy sampling their Cabernet blends, which incorporate Cabernet Franc and Merlot grapes from the region. Of special note: "The Conjurer" and "The Archimage", both aged in new oak barrels 11-20 months. Oh yeah, the wines are all named after types of magicians, and the labels beautifully echo the turn-of-the-century posters which used to advertise shows by Harry Houdini and the Great Thurston. These winemakers are also crazy about magic, so the tasting room sort of feels like the punk rock lobby of a magic castle. You can see why Sleight of Hand is being called a "cult" winery... their wine club hosts great parties several times a year (Neil Patrick Harris is apparently a member; maybe he'll make a trip to Walla Walla sometime!) The staff is great here... Traci is almost always there and will make you feel at home. Be sure to pick up a bottle when you visit... this wine is made in relatively small batches, and isn't easy to find elsewhere. Now, watch me make this glass of Merlot disappear..

Yelp
I will never go here again. We had bought the wine before and enjoyed it but our tasting room experience will prevent me from ever buying it again.
