Sunset Squares Slice Shop - Review - Nopa - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"After being crowned air hockey champ at Emporium, or getting blasted off tequila sodas and sweating through your shirt at Madrone, the next order of business is a visit to Sunset Squares Slice Shop—a.k.a. the late-night pizza destination in NoPa. The more casual outpost of Sunset Squares is down the block from most of the Divisadero bar action (just follow the “Hot Pizza” sign), and is ready for you to inhale their snappy sourdough crust at a degenerate hour (they’re open until 2:30am on weekends). This pizza spot is as straightforward as it gets. Order on the tablet, snag a stool to debrief the drunken shenanigans, and let a piping hot slice of pepperoni or barbecue chicken bring you back down to earth. Is this the best pizza you’ll ever have? No. But it is, at least, a step up from the DiGiorno in your freezer." - Julia Chen

San Francisco’s Best Pizza By The Slice | Eater SF

"San Francisco pizza teacher Tony Gemignani wrote a book called the Pizza Bible, which basically makes him a pizza deity. At this slice shop and several others across the city, his team serves very big, very high-quality slices of cheese for $5, pepperoni for $5.25., and some fun topping options like a“purple haze,” with mozzarella, purple potato, pancetta, rosemary, pesto, feta, oregano, romano, and garlic oil." - Caleb Pershan

Google
We went to the Slice Shop for the gluten free deep dish pizza, and the collective wisdom of the Internet delivered once again. Finding gluten free deep dish pizza is very hard, most places just go with the thin crust because it's much easier. But not the Slice Shop! Their gluten free barbecue chicken deep dish square pizza was outstanding! The two of us polished four squares in negative time. The gluten free crust was virtually indistinguishable from regular crust. The toppings were delicious. The two sauces were generous and made this an appropriately messy experience. We'll be back!

Google
I'm from Michigan so I was excited to have a taste of home! The Detroit-style (square) pizza was delicious and flavorful, with really good quality ingredients - I wouldn't say it was familiar, but it was a delicious San Fransisco twist on a classic!

Google
JUST GOOD - NOT GREAT. Admittedly, I got it through Postmates. That being said, it’s not that it was cold that I didn’t like. Rather, it just wasn’t cooked that well. To quote Dave Portnoy - it didn’t have a great undercarriage. It was not crispy and ended up being more mushy than anything else. The top was cooked well and the toppings were tasty, the c’est/dough itself is what was left lacking.

Google
I live nearby and go here often. I’ve tried most of the menu and I’m a huge fan. My favorite square pizza is the butter chicken. They do a good job of a flavorful sauce that’s very satisfying with the sourdough. I thought it was a great balance where the sauce is thick enough to mesh with the bread very well. I almost always get their buffalo wings. They’re very crispy and the sauce is tangy. I like that the wings are fried and not baked at some lower quality pizza spots. Their Italian sandwich is a good lunch pickup also.

Google
Pizza is consistently delicious! Love their Detroit style pepperoni or chorizo pizza!

Google
Got two slices of pepperoni after a show at the independent and we were super impressed! Texture and flavor were great. Came right out of the oven. Place was clean, music was good, staff was friendly. Will revisit!

Google
I was born and raised in Detroit and this place was disappointing. There’s definitely better Detroit style in SF than this, dough was practically raw in the middle. Points for creativity (mapo tofu topping was good) but execution left lots to be desired

Google
I NEVER leave reviews but I want to say that I LOVE THIS PLACE and I love that they are open late and have good food!! My favorite dish is the garlic bread! The owner is a amazing guy and he made my experience amazing! I will DEFINITELY be coming back!! Next time you think about getting pizza get it from here!! You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
If you're just looking for a casual late-night spot to get some food, then I recommend this place. If you want to really enjoy your pizza then this might not be the best choice. The service is fast as they heat up your slice in a few minutes, but it's fairly oily and expensive for what you get.
google avatar

Clara L.

Yelp
ok pizza but convenient and opens super late. Bulgogi fries were really dry, would not recommend their fries!

Yelp
Wanted to try their Keto slice pizza so I ordered delivery from this place. While I'm at it, I also ordered a vegetable slice and a cheese slice that are not keto. We like the pizza slices.
google avatar

Kristo V.

Yelp
I ordered a pepperoni round pizza. It was prepped and cooked in 10 or 15 minutes. Pizza usually has to bake longer than that. The pizza was oily and not fully cooked. I had to put the pizza in my oven to finish cooking it and it still wasn't that great of a pizza. I have to say the kitchen staff was really nice.

Yelp
I have not ate here before so don't have comment on that But I have negative comment about the professionalism and credibility of establishment/management. Had an interview today at 2 pm and the manager canceled it 20 mins before the Start time, sent me a message at 1:43 pm. I was already on my way and it was very unprofessional of him to cancel last minute. I would have appreciated if he told me a day before that it's canceled or asked for reschedule. I actually went there in person because I didn't see this message sent at last minute. Everyone's time should be valued equally.

Yelp
Fast. Friendly. Pizza was good, but felt like the toppings could have been more fresh. The crust and sauce were good. Only reason for the docked about: Not all of their pizzas are available by the side. It's a tiny place on the inside but here is some seating.
google avatar

James A.

Yelp
Had the mushroom square, a slice of the mapo tofu square and a slice of round pepperoni. Everything was excellent but the highlights were the toppings on the mapo tofu and the dough for the square pies in general. The dough was incredible. Excited to try more pies.

Yelp
In the pursuit of finding the best pizza shop in San Fransisco in a late night daze I found sunset squares and it has some lovely pro's and some cons that are irrelevant! The pizza ? Incredible. A nice thin crust, the dough isn't too doughy, the sauce is just right and the perfect amount of cheese and pepperoni. With options for sodas and beer on tap (I think). The staff was kind, and the service was quick! With amazing music and a good party atmosphere, this was the perfect pick me up spot. When we got here the night revitalized and we kept going! Having a pizza spot across from madrone and emporium is brilliant, it beats out the hit or miss hot dogs, and it's open later than Popeyes! The fact that it's open so late is incredible, and I'm going to say their one con is their bathroom isn't selfie approved! But they do have a bathroom that was clean, so that's good! I'm adding this to my late night rotation !

Yelp
Quick and overall tasty. A tale of two slices : a perfectly popping vegetable slice that was 100% delicious (the robust flavor of the fresh cherry tomatoes nailed it) and a decent - but not of the same caliber slice of mushroom. So a five star and theee star slice I'm averaging to 4. It was alls raced nice and (freshly) hot. Ambience - it's fine, a place for a quick bite on Divis. You won't want to linger here with your hot date though. Ordering is via screen kiosk. This wastes time for pizza (no personalizations or mods are offered, this ain't boba) that they have sliced and ready to heat for you. I asked if I had to use it the answer was a nice but firm yes.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here after going to the Emporium barcade, this place is open until 2:30AM. Pretty good service and quick! You order off the iPad system and the food comes out quick. Oscar the manager was very nice, we talked to him while we waited for our food at 2am. How he has the patience for all the drunk people coming in at 2am is such a blessing haha. He was such a pleasure to talk to while we waited for our food. Come here for some late night pizza after the bars! Just put your name that you'll remember for your order haha (witnessed so many people putting random names lol)
google avatar

Yelp
Fast and in a good location. Not a great place for a date but great for pizza on the run. Pizza must be ordered from a kiosk.
google avatar

Jay A.

Yelp
I swung by before an event next door at Club Waziema and I was starving. Ordering from here is done on a touch screen where you can add drinks, toppings and other items. I can't even remember what the slice I ordered was called but it was a square slice with pepperoni and mushrooms (I added mushrooms to it), and it was delicious. I think it could've sat in the oven a little longer to heat up cause it was a little cold in some parts but very good and flavorful, and I think the crust was even seasoned as well. It was my first time trying this place so I'm not really aware of what they're really known for when it comes to slices but I really enjoyed it. The ambience is chill, the ordering process was easy, the wait time was short, and the seating arrangement is simple, just like how pizza by the slice places should be. Next time I'm in the area, I'm definitely going for a slice.

Yelp
Our go to pizza shop. Delicious flavorful pizza. The square ones are our favorites. Especially the cheese one

Yelp
So happy to be able to order Gluten free pizza on divisadero after Little Star closed. Even better? Slices!! I've been here before after a night of drinking and it took a long time (admittedly- probably us not having it together!). This time we ordered ahead and it was perfect. We ate inside and people watched because we got there pretty early.

David O.

Yelp
Do not order from this companies website. If you do order, order through a 3rd party that will refund you. I ordered two pizzas for delivery and 30 minutes after ordering received a text that they had to cancel the order, no other explanation. Ok, that's a bummer but life goes on. However they still charged me the full amount and tip and delivery
google avatar

Denise C.

Yelp
Sunset Squares on Divizadero was fun. I got a mushroom slice and the crust was interesting. Pizza Pizza! Thanks for playing Duran Duran for me homey. Next time.
google avatar

Yelp
Good but quite overpriced for such a tiny square; leaves something to be desired! I do appreciate that they're open so late though.
google avatar

Yelp
3 but I only tried the boba drink. Save ur money buy a come. Boba was about 8 ounces, had a weird after taste, and was too sweet but you can probably just ask for 25% sweet. Boba was $6-$7 I didn't try the pizza so I can't speak on that.
google avatar

Amy W.

Yelp
It pains me to give a 3. The pizza was decent, it is the systems that are horrible here. There is a big sign in the window about $2 mini slices for lunch (see my photo, and it has been there for weeks). BUT there is no option for $2 mini slices on the self order kiosk that basically blocks you from entering the main part of the restaurant. The guy at the register said you had to order them at the register (which is Way Past the kiosk at the end of the counter). ALSO I saw an instagram post the night before saying 1/2 price NY slices for lunch starting today - Again - Nope, not registering correctly on the self serve kiosk. (I have photo proof of that post attached to this review as well.) There as also maybe a system glitch as it took about 20 mins for me to get my slices (the register guy mumbled something about it - but note that the "register guy" is also the pizza-making guy.) There were only 2 people working and they obviously needed help. To the good part of the review. I got 3 slices - 2 mushrooms and 1 pepperoni, I figured they would be teeny tiny since a lot of the reviews complained about the size of the regular slices, so I figured 3 minis would equal 1 regular. But NO! - it was (as far as I could tell) 3 regular Detroit slices (measuring 3"x4"). So a fantastic deal if you know about it - and then have the nerve to interrupt the guy making pizzas to ask about it... Management - these are some tough times - I get it - but you MUST MUST get your act together on this location or I fear you will fail. A couple came in as I was leaving and they had ordered online and thought their order would be ready - they said it would be another 20 mins - so something is up here.

Yelp
I grew up in metro-Detroit and love me a Detroit square style pizza. I ordered a pepperoni slice and it was delicious. I really enjoy the sourdough bread. Makes a nice crispy texture. Will order again! Also love that there's delivery til later times! SF needs those options!
google avatar

Chloe H.

Yelp
Has a vegan option but you have to buy it by the whole pizza. You can get it smaller if it's gluten free. Vegan pizza is good but could be better.

Yelp
So- I've walked by & gone inside several times. It's always kind of trippy. Can't tell if they're open, dark tint on windows on Divis. No visible people manning the front of the store. It's weird in there. I think it used to be a different pizza joint. One associated with a high rated Detroit style pizza. Then that one quietly left & a different pizza place replaced it. The names are similar. It's confusing. Okay- here's the deal: I can't speak to slices or squares or special pizzas they make. I'll tell you that the buffalo wings were soggy but good size. We put them under the broiler & it helped immensely. Pizza: We've only ordered their standard round sourdough pizza crust. First time with Pepperoni & this time with mushrooms. Those pizzas were delicious! If you like a darker & crispier crust, maybe mention that when you order. Tonight we tried out the cookie they offer. Oh damn!! We should have ordered 4! We're not huge fans of chocolate chip cookies, but this one may have changed our minds. Thanks guys!

Arden R.

Yelp
Naomi was the sweetest ever, made sure my friends and I had the best service. Can't recommend a better place.

A L.

Yelp
First time having sourdough pizza and it was phenomenal! Crust was so cheesy and crispy. Pepperoni was perfect! Definitely new favorite spot!

Wayne W.

Yelp
Yelp reviews are a bunch of crap. It's mostly entitled children complaining that someone wouldn't bend over backwards for to indulge their neediness. Unfortunately, Yelp has become a juggernaut, and this gibberish is now important to a business's livelihood. Most yelpers would probably give a bad review if they placed an order online, and the restaurant didn't have it when they came to pick it up. When I'd been in before, there were 2-3 people behind the counter, but this time was one exasperated individual. In the brief time that we spoke about my order not being received, three different machines beeped and spat tickets at him. Stressful to say the least. Nonetheless, my dude stopped what he was working on, wrote down my order, and whipped up my pizzas in the time that it took me to play a couple rounds of sudoku. No harm, no foul. I will be a regular customer.

Rebecca D.

Yelp
Downgraded 1-2... open yay. Good square pizza yay, prices nope. Non square pizza nope. Time to get pizza mixed Waiting OVER :20 for a slice of pizza. The pizza has been downsized and not well cooked.... For 25 min + in person I could be home and get food delivered NOT worth it
google avatar

La H.

Yelp
$20 for 2 vegan mushroom slices?! Wth. Wanted to try this place cause I had heard the Detroit style pizza was supposed to be good. Very thin crust for a Detroit style and the price is just outrageous. Won't be back. Plus tired of being charged the "vegan tax" for things

Dwight T.

Yelp
Does not operate stated hours and staff closes store prior to closing time. Workers were chatting it up and lied about hours.
google avatar

Kyle A.

Yelp
I ordered here late night while visiting San Fran. I got the Chicken Tenders and Pepperoni Pizza Square. The Chicken Tenders were great, but you didn't get a lot of them. The pizza would have been perfect if cooked a bit longer. This food review would have gotten a "Great" review if there were more tenders in the order and the pizza cooked longer. But the taste of both were awesome.
google avatar

Dub W.

Yelp
AVOID Slices show up looking like they're cut in half. They sent me two half Sicilian slices. If I put them together I can make one $20 slice. Wheeeeee. Called them and they said yep that's the portion. That picture in the menu is a full Sicilian piece, and it's SQUARE. Everything on the menu is square or round. Why wouldn't I expect half size rectangles?? As an aside I have literally never had a rectangle piece of Sicilian pizza in my life, but who's to say. Its cool that they left a nice big empty crust border on the pepperoni piece too. The kind you uhhh always see on uhh... Sicilian slices. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhh
google avatar

Ty S.

Yelp
Good value for the price but my expectations were way higher. The pizza logs are essentially mozzarella sticks in an egg roll wrapper. Fresh and tasty but lacks a punch. Maybe some garlic inside would elevate. The $2 lunch special slice is a steal however the slice did not taste fresh.
google avatar

J. S.

Yelp
This satellite of Sunset Squares should have an easy 4 stars. While their price-to-slice isn't balanced and they chose a location peppered with other pizza options nearby, they have a decent thing goin' and some variety on the menu in case you're not feeling entirely pizzaey. They're dinged a star because their parent outfit is supercilious.
google avatar

JarredJoseph G.

Yelp
Came thru after hitting Madrone. Not packed and was served immediately. I'm guessing with the small numero of reviews, they're pretty new? Idk. Anyway, order was quick and heated nicely. Overall vibe was great with hella good music, playing Common Market as I grubbed. Overall a decent place to grab a bite when u been drankin, but a bit pricey nonetheless. $17+ for two slices
google avatar

Bob D.

Yelp
Rip off rip off $7.25 for this mini mini slice this place is a rip off. Do not go. You can bit a whole pizza for the price of a slice elsewhere. And it or terrible pizza. Tasteless. No Italian pizza I know Is this terr

Yelp
No!!!! What happened to you sunset squares??? You used to be so tasty. But a Detroit style pan pizza shouldn't look like a doughy thin crust! You all used to be so much better. I hope you get your mojo back because this is a poor shadow of how you started feels like finding out an old friend has moved away forever. Hope this isn't a sign that you're overextended and closing soon. BTW these lovely 4 tiny squares can be delivered to you for only $28.
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
The food wasn't bad but it just wasn't great. I think it would be a good late night slice after drinking if you just stumbled upon it but I don't think I'd come back intentionally for anything I ordered. I got the BBQ chicken pizza and the cheesy bread, both of which were just okay. The guys working were very nice though.
google avatar

Leticia S.

Yelp
I found this place picking up my mom. The garlic fries was Amazing!!! The chicken Ceasar salad was ok. I wish the salad had more lettuce than chicken and it did not have any cheese. The pizza was good. Was it wroth the amount I spend. No!!!!
google avatar

Christian H.

Yelp
We ordered their pepperoni pizza and hot wings. The pizza wasn't even fully cooked and it was super doughy and gross. The top barely had any colour. It's like they rushed the pizza. Three different Uber eats pick up cancelled when they got to the restaurant citing that the food wasn't ready. It took them so long to make the food it's a wonder why it's so undercook. The wings were totally flaccid. WHAT A RIP OFF. I should have heeded the warnings on the review.
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
A decent square slice and they're open late. It's not as good as square pie guys or something but it's cheaper and it's going for that "post bar" market and does that well. It's better than the other nearby pizza option in Seniore's.
google avatar

Joanne K.

Yelp
I'm not as crazy about pizza as most people, mainly because I'm pretty picky with my pizza. But when I saw they also served boba, you know I had to give this place a try! For me, the topping on a pizza needs to taste good as in the perfect blend of flavors, savoriness, sweetness, etc. And the crust needs to be the perfect texture like crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. Simply having bomb topping options smothered in grease won't do for me. This place has a decent selection. I ordered Caesar Salad, Margherita Fries, BBQ Chicken slice, Market veggies signature pizza, Cheesy Garlic Monkey Bread, and Korean Tiger Boba. The salad was barely enough to serve 1 person as stated. It was supposed to come with kale and sun dried tomatoes but it was romaine and cherry tomatoes. The fries were too soft but that was maybe because the steam from being left in a container for a bit. The veggie pizza needed more veggies or else call it something else because it had only a sprinkle of vegetables and it was on the dry side. I expected the monkey bread to be a bit sweet because that's how monkey breads are. But it was basically garlic bread in pull apart style. Overall, it was a disappointing experience for me. If I had to give this restaurant another chance, I will order from their other location on 9th since it looks like they have different items.
google avatar

Sebastian W.

Yelp
Not one to judge quite seriously on pizza, this place was mediocre if not horrid with ambiance, service, and communication. Staff is super unprofessional and dismissive, and makes customers uncomfortable. Blasting music while the distinct aroma of burned pizza lurks through the space. Hostess said 20 mins for a take out order, ended up waiting twice that, enough time to write this review. The only reason I didn't give them the lowest rating is because this place is still new and there's still opportunity to turn things around.
google avatar

Bryan J.

Yelp
Tried this place for a second time and pizza is still undercooked. Raw dough all in the middle and the pizza is barely 1/2 inch thick. Like $30 for a pizza that isn't even cooked all the way is super frustrating. Especially on repeat occasions. There's much better pizza around than here.
google avatar

Victor C.

Yelp
High-quality dough and ingredients = amazing pizza. The pizza at Sunset Squares rivals some of the best in the city. I personally like the round-style more because I'm a fan of a crispy bottom but the regular squares has a nice crust on the edges also. Don't skip out on the focaccia, also! Will come back again another time to try the Bulldog slice.
google avatar

Madison M.

Yelp
Delicious Detroit style pizza!! Nothing special about their regular crust. Go for deep dish and you will not be disappointed! Each whole pie is 4 square slices, so it is a bit spendy, but absolutely worth it. Customer service was not 5 star, but I'm not going to dock them on that because they just recently opened and I have faith they will figure that part out once they get their feet under them. As for what to order- We got a pepperoni, a Phil, and a veggie and all were absolutely delicious. 3 pies (fed 4 people well) came to just over $100 with tax and tip.
google avatar

Bolo B.

Yelp
Staff was perfectly nice. Pizza is flavorless. You also wind up paying almost 6 bucks for a slice of plain cheese pizza (fyi. i got the traditional triangle shape rather then the square) that looks about the size you got in your grade school cafeteria...way too small for the price. There are better pizza by the slice options nearby including the one right next door.
google avatar

Jason P.

Yelp
I ended up waiting over 20 minutes for my 2 slices of pizza! They were around $8 per slice, and the pizza wasn't even that remarkable. In fact it got cold on my 5 min walk home (after waiting 20 mins for it to heat in the oven??) How does a by the slice pizza joint take time? Isn't the point for it to be quick? There's a maxim in project management: you can have it fast, cheap, or good; pick two. Didn't get any of those at Sunset Squares. Would go back if they lowered their price below $5 a slice, but wtf. By the slice pizza places don't have to be complicated. Fresh ingredients, rotating slices into the oven routinely, and the economy of scale is supposed to make it lower cost than a higher end pizza place and also a fairly quick process. Somewhere Sunset Squares got it wrong.

Ariana R.

Yelp
Burnt square pie , I would've appreciated if they would've been honest with me, I would've just waited for another but surprised they decided to give me a burned pizza
