The Best Restaurants Around Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (SLO), According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Open 24 hours a day, strip mall shop SloDoCo turns out some of the best doughnuts in the region. The daily doughnut menu covers the gamut with classics like buttermilk, old-fashioned, cake, and raised options, alongside croissants and craggy-edged fritters. But the rotating monthly specials are where things get more interesting, with doughnuts in flavors like horchata brulee and Biscoff cookie. SloDoCo also offers a handful of gluten-free options." - Rebecca Roland

Where to Eat Around Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (SLO)

Where To Eat And Drink In San Luis Obispo

"Located in a strip mall on the outskirts of Cal Poly’s campus, SloDoCo opened in 2010, and immediately became one of the most popular breakfast spots in town. The bright donut joint has a line out the door by 10am every day, full of people trying to get their hands on a maple bacon bar, rectangular-shaped “pillows”, or their famous tye-dyed marshmallow galaxy donuts. The space is also pretty big, with a relaxed coffee shop atmosphere and free wifi, and it’s open 24 hours if you’re in need of a late-night sugar binge." - brant cox

Google
AMAZING donuts! We were even stopped in the San Francisco airport by other passengers to rave about how great these donuts are. Yum!

Google
SloDoCo Donuts have raised the donut shop bar. Late night hours and creative donut concoctions. Looks like a popular place for college kids to study. Gluten free options available. I had a great Chai Latte, maple leaf donut. crumble glazed and gluten free chocolate fruity pebbles donuts. Good stuff, Maynard.

Google
We heard about this place and wanted to check it out. They have a wide variety of donuts at a reasonable price. We got 3 donuts to try. The only thing about the donuts were that they were very sweet for my taste. That’s why I give them 4 star. I like sweet but this was way too sugary. I think if they go easy on the sugar it would be better.

Google
This location is my favorite, the donuts are always fresh and the associates are always friendly, attentive, and don't mind helping you out with suggestions. A lot of the local university student come here for a late night snack, hangout, and most of all study. I make a 30 min trip to come here almost every other week with my friends and family. We love to support this local business!

Google
Great staff and a great place to be. The However the Doughnuts are closed to terrible . Slodoco has started off okay and the doughnuts just got worse every year. Dry gritty doughnuts they are often times contaminated , definitely wouldn't eat there if you have allergies. Nothing like a chocolate doughnut that tastes like berries. This place honestly has been has been making me start to think I don't like donuts until I eat one someplace else.

Google
A friend gave me an assortment of these donuts and I was very pleasantly surprised! I'm not from SLO or even California, but had seen the signs on occasion. I expected your average donut shop taste (which by all means is very good) but the ones I tried were superb.

Andee Martin

Google
My review is of the Vegan/GF donut only. It is wet. The texture is almost right, but it's so wet, every time I've had one. And there is an aftertaste. Also I've tried a maple and a mocha and they taste the same. Not sure why, but it's unfortunate. Makes me sad since there are already so few vegan choices in the city. 😔

Google
The girls that worked there were awesome and friendly. She did a good job, welcoming me at small talk. I was from out of town. This is my first time at this place. I recommend it 2 other people. The donuts were delicious.

Yelp
I'm a huge fan!!! Came for the first time, a year ago, had to come back! I came all the way from San Diego. I was greeted by friendly staff. Bought, cookies and creme pillow, tiramisu, maple bacon bar and a pepperoni pizza croissant. GET TGE CROISSANT ! Ate it on my way out. Came New Year's Day. A lot of places are closed. So happy you were open. This location is the main MAIN located. It is alot smaller. The inside was quiet. They have cool Merch. Thank you Slodoco!!! See you next year!

Yelp
An O.G. creative donut place. It's so hard to choose a flavor everytime - most recently I got a creme brûlée waffle, which has a torched top and condensed milk filling. These donuts tasted fresh, unlike some I've had at other places where the frying oil is noticeably stale. Logistics: - indoor seating only on the most recent visit but I swear I saw a few outdoor tables in the past - now open 24 hours! - a variety of traditional, cake style, vegan, and gluten free donuts (with latter in a separate case) - they also serve coffee drinks (haven't tried) and classic bottles of milk - plenty of strip mall parking outside

Yelp
sugar bomb but fake flavoring. i wish it tasted more real, like pastry not preservatives and sugar. most people won't notice.
google avatar

Allison C.

Yelp
Wow where do I start? Donut heaven. Such a huge variety of donuts and a very large space. It is so hard to choose and the employee was so nice at answering my questions and guiding me in choosing the right donuts. The donuts were all so fluffy and delicious and it is probably a good thing I don't live in the area! Will definitely be back next time I am in SLO! The creme brulee donut was soooo good as well as the applied filled bear claw with cinnamon crumb - do not sleep on these!
google avatar

Yelp
Really cool donut place. All kinds of different donuts. Definitely worth a try. If you're in the area don't forget the MILK

Yelp
Swing by on my way out of the central coast and looking for a sweet treat to take home for dessert. They had so many options and all their donuts looked great. I settled on a peanut butter pillow but once I got home to eat it I noticed there wasn't a lot of peanut butter in each bite, opened it up and saw the smallest amount of PB ever. It had the potential to be a great donut and sad the filling was so minimal. Hopefully it was just a fluke! Service was quick and friendly, ample parking, and quiet inside with lots of seating and looks like a popular study spot.

Yelp
Quality/Quantity - Got a few donuts and an iced tea. We are regulars at this location. We always visit every time we are in SLO. 100s of donuts to choose from daily; yes, hundreds. They can even do custom orders, see the website. Monthly specials. Atmosphere - Cool decor, see pictures. Semi open kitchen/bakery. You just need to peek, twist your head, etc. LOL. Plenty of mall parking. Huge clean one unisex bathroom. Now it is open 24/7, which is dangerous for me... Service - Good. Price - Very reasonable prices. I would actually say inexpensive for the quality we get. But again, we are regular customers. Owner Comment - Congrats on all your success since 2010 at this location and with your 3 total locations.

Yelp
DELICIOUS and so cute. It's so hard to choose among all the selections, including fun little seasonal donuts (we went in early December and got a reindeer donut with a little red velvet donut hole for a nose and pretzels for antlers). We also got some great iced cold brew and a matcha latte, too. Service was very friendly and quick, and the ambiance inside is great for working or studying, or even just chilling with one of the board games from the community shelf. 10/10.

Yelp
Stopped by after a friend was raving about these donuts. I was immediately impressed with the wide variety of options and flavors! They had the "typical" flavors such as glazed, old fashioned, cream filled, etc. However, they also had new flavor combinations like lavender, matcha, chai, and a specialty strawberry maple donut. Overall the actual donuts were pretty good! They were light and fluffy but pretty sweet so be sure to have your sweet tooth ready to go.
google avatar

Quoc H.

Yelp
Made a donut stop driving through SLO. The area was pretty empty so we were skeptical about the raving reviews but I see why now. Slodoco has an amazing selection of donuts and I wished I could try more but the ones I got were very solid! Staff were also very friendly :)
google avatar

Sarah K.

Yelp
slodoco is a solid place to get your donuts. once you walk in, you're greeted with a colorful assortment of donuts with a super unique galaxy donut! they have OVER 100 options :^) I love their matcha glazed donut
google avatar

Alayna K.

Yelp
Came pretty close to midnight and they were still open! Love the convenience and the huge assortment of donuts. A couple of our donuts were stale, and the Cap'n Crunch cereal was a bit disappointing.
google avatar

Collins C.

Yelp
There donuts are very good quality and probably the best donuts in san luis. There dough is very good, light and airy. Please bring mochi donuts to the store tho i love them and can't get them anywhere. The workers are nice but mostly college students which is cool. Also i really like the scenery.
google avatar

Diana S.

Yelp
We ordered the chocolate pillow, minion donut, maple bacon bar, and the hotdog donut. We enjoyed all of the donuts except the hotdog one lol. The donuts were fresh and flavorful. The worker had great customer service. The inside was clean and they had a huge variety of donuts to choose from. We would definitely come back next time we come down to SLO.
google avatar

Liz L.

Yelp
I'm not a big donut fan but these donuts are delicious. The shop was close by, clean and the staff was friendly. Great selection of donuts and they sell coffees. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Anna Q.

Yelp
We enjoy the variety of donuts and seasonal offerings. The service is always friendly, and the coffee good. There really are so many options and my kids love picking out their favorite. Always clean.

Yelp
Came here 7 years ago waiting in a huge line and have finally made it back to review! I didn't have a big impression of the place when I first went other than the fact that there are so many people if you go on a Saturday morning but I was pleasantly surprised when I came back on a late Friday night to snag some donuts. I got the fun Mickey Mouse pumpkin shaped donut which is pumpkin spice flavored, the lavender donut, and the strawberry cake with sprinkles. Honestly the strawberry cake was a little disappointing and way too dense in my opinion, but the lavender donut really blew me away. It was super fragrant and tasted exactly how I hoped it would and was the perfect ratio of just enough flavor to dough as I take a bite! The pumpkin spice one was also surprisingly good and I love places that do themed donuts for the holidays! Delicious and unique flavored donuts and 24/7?? Would totally come back!

Emma W.

Yelp
It's 9:45 on a Tuesday morning, and the 2 ladies behind the donut counter are still greeting everyone with the energy of a Friday night. It's so nice to be able to curl up with good food and even better cold brew, knowing that the energy in this place is always top tier!
google avatar

Abigail G.

Yelp
They have the best donuts in slo and makes a great late night sweet treat. This is also a great place to study since they have a ton of table space! The workers' auras do intimidate me though.
google avatar

Lahleeh V.

Yelp
Very good tasting donuts. It tasted like Dunkin' Donuts when it started 30+ years ago. I really missed that taste and I'm glad I get to enjoy them again. The server is very nice and helpful. The place is nicely painted, very colorful out of this world donuts. They have game boards and long tables to accommodate a family who can eat and play at the same time. Very quiet when we went on a Friday afternoon. I wish this place is not 4 hours away from home. We will surely be back when we decided to come in SLO for our next road trip. For now, keep up the good work, taste and best wishes to you all.

Erin H.

Yelp
Chocolate donuts are good , the ice coffee mocha was good . Workers very nice and helpful and attend you quickly . Good service , and good place to study

Yelp
Last night on December 23rd at about 10:00 P.M, I walked into SloDoCo Donuts to grab myself and my wife a few donuts; however, I never got a chance to actually "order" any donuts because the woman with glasses and black hair who was working behind the counter was flirting with this dude the entire time in a fairly overt way. After waiting about 3 minutes behind the individual spitting game to the woman working at the counter, I approached the counter and stood right in front of her; clearly, she had no interest in serving any customers, as she didn't even acknowledge my presence. I waited about another minute or so to see if she'd actually acknowledge me and take my order, but apparently respect for a customers time isn't on the menu here. After she failed to even acknowledge me (or so much as look in my direction) I walked away from the counter and left the establishment. What a shame that I didn't get to eat these delicious donuts because of a complete lack of customer service. My wife and I were shocked; we've never experienced anything like this before from any establishment that serves food. Before my time in the military, I worked within the food industry myself and know firsthand that a warm greeting along with courteous and prompt customer service is the cornerstone of staying in business and upholding your reputation (if you care about that kind of thing). Anyways, hopefully management can address this employee directly and rectify this. She was clearly not interested in serving any customers, nor did she seem to care that anyone would want to spend their money at this establishment. It's not her business, right?
google avatar

Katie N.

Yelp
Delicious donuts with a huge variety of flavors - start looking into what you want ahead of time so you can have some time to think about it . Almost everything we got was exceptional. The double chocolate was surprisingly really delicious. You can't go wrong with the maple bars. The blue, galaxy like one was just okay, but did look pretty cool. I was very surprised with how fresh they all tasted. You must stop here if you're in the area!
google avatar

Yelp
Fire donut shop. The only real thing that should be fired is the girl working the night shift with her airpod in and giving me an attitude when i'm ordered donuts for my parents like bruh lol ik we're in the same age group but damn i could feel your 'get out of the store i wanna do sidework' energy so bad. like there's an espresso machine, make a cup of coffee for yourself and pretend that im a person at least damn anyways i love you slodoco
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
Very good doughnuts! Will go again when we visit SLO again loved the taste as well as creativity.
google avatar

Marina M.

Yelp
You can never go wrong a good donut and this place has GREAT donuts. The service was super quick and everyone was very nice. Inside was classic and it looked like a common study spot. If I were out here more I would study here too :). The donuts were also super delicious and fresh, i recommend hehe
google avatar

Mosa H.

Yelp
Local donuttery with really unique donuts. No one in my party could commit to a decision, they all looked so good! The crème brûlée was fantastic- aside from a cracking sugar top, the filling seriously tasted like a creme brulee. The famous galaxy donut was beautiful and tasted exactly like a marshmallow. Another favorite was the matcha- it wasn't too sweet or bitter of a matcha icing! The old fashioned was good, as well. Baristas/cashiers were friendly and took the time to explain to us which were the best selling donuts. The inside of the cafe is spacious with seating.
google avatar

Tony G.

Yelp
I was passing through town and need to get something in my system. Imagine my surprise when I saw on Yelp that there's a 24 hour donut shop?!?! This place is amazing! Not only is it open 24/7, but it's also nice and spacious inside, and most importantly/amazingly is the selection SLoDoCo has!! THERE ARE SO SO MANY DONUT HERES! The selection is nuts! It took me a while to order because I was overwhelmed in a very positive way. There's a lot of unique donuts and flavors like creme burlee, mint chip, snickerdoodle, and these things they call pillows which are like theres flat donut filled heavenly beings haha. I really like that the donuts are super soft, and they don't taste overly sweet. They're not like the krispy kreme glazed where it's just straight up sugar. This place is on my "Must stop/ Must tell everyone and their mama's! List."
google avatar

Michelle H.

Yelp
Best 24/7 spot, if not only spot in town you can go to after a night out !I love how they always have holiday designs and in seasonal designs (these were from December and they might be my favorite ones ! ). I love how they also have vegan donuts too which honestly has helped me a lot after having them. Not the best place to study tho as it is loud and WiFi is slow !
google avatar

Joey D.

Yelp
All the flavors. So many donuts to try. Seriously, I don't think I've ever seen that many options. And most of them looked great. And I liked almost every one I tried. This will be a problem. They really do have a great selection. From many of the standard flavors you'd expect, to more unique offerings like Crème Brûlée, which was shockingly good. Not that I expected it to be bad, but I didn't expect it to be as good as it was. Employees were nice and the atmosphere was laid back. Seems like a great place to hang. Wish it was a little closer than 4 hours away! This was my first visit, but it'll be a must visit each time I'm back in SLO.
google avatar

Jenna C.

Yelp
Every time we are in SLO we come here to pick up donuts for either the drive-in or breakfast the next morning. The donuts are so unique and delicious. My favorite is the snickerdoodle but they are all good including the cereal ones and the traditional ones. The staff is always friendly and the place is clean and inviting. Totally recommend for a great donut.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
Had to stop at SloDoCo when passing through the area. The smell from outside was alluring. It was definitely busy but they keep the line moving fast and have plenty of staff. There is a donut for everyone, and there is a good selection of vegan and gluten free products too. We got a maple donut and some donut holes. All delicious :) Unfortunately they were out of apple fritters which two of us wanted.
google avatar

Katherine L.

Yelp
The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful! With such a huge selection, I wasn't sure what to order on my first visit, but they were so patient in guiding me. My daughter was in town for SLO Days, and I ended up purchasing a dozen for her group--they loved it! I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
The shop is located just across the street from the Tesla super charger which makes it a great little snack on a long drive. I got a glazed donut with frosting on top. The taste was pretty standard for a donut, no complaints about that. They had some funky looking flavors with bright colors and toppings but I just got a more basic one. The price seemed a tad higher than a hole in the wall donut place. 2 donuts and a small ice coffee for $11 seems a little pricey. But the quality was good and I'm glad I got a little energy for the rest of my long drive. I'm sure I'll go back to try some of their more fun options next time
google avatar

Lissa B.

Yelp
Such a fun environment! Art and murals everywhere you turn. And delicious delicious donuts! Their donuts are an experience. So many fun creative flavors and ever changing themes and ideas for their food. You can make everyone happy coming here. Their staff is very helpful and put a lot of love into everything they do. Their gluten free donuts are tender and delicious! Can't forget their drinks!
google avatar

Kim C.

Yelp
I LOVE SDC! I usually stop here on my way to SF because they have the Nutella Pillow which features a music note design on top. I love to bring these for my siblings who are both musicians (they go crazy for these). Plus, we're Italian so we love Nutella!!! Win-win! Andddd, it doesn't matter when we hit the road, this place is 24/7! Aside from that perk, I love the variety here. They have 100 different fresh donuts daily and do monthly features. I'm obsessed with Monsters, Inc and was delighted to see they were one of the specials for June! Absolutely adorable! The interior is big, colorful, fun and inviting. Staff is always helpful and nice. I love that they get excited over my choices! I think it also pretty cool that they do custom orders. The donuts are always soft and pillowy; not overly sweet which is what I love. Definitely give Slo Do Co a visit! They have something for everyone!
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
First time visit and was very impressed by the service. The employees were so friendly, helpful, and patient. In regards to the food, the donuts were okay! They had very cool donut options (and plenty of vegan options) but were a bit too sugary/sweet for my taste. The ones that my partner and myself got were not very airy either- moreso dense. Regardless, if you haven't tried SloDoCo, I would recommend trying it out!
google avatar

LB S.

Yelp
Donuts were nice and filling. Did not need to eat many to be full. I got the captian crunch donut and a colorful donut with nice frosting. Two people working. They were super nice and greeted me. HUGE selection with so many stuff to choose from. Unfortunately, I am not from here so this may be my only time to have it. The shop itself was cheery and had nice music. I read other reviews complaining about not many vegan donuts but right off the bat I can see that to be untrue. Feels like the donut slapped me because it really "HIT the spot!" On a serious note, I would recommend it to a friend if they lived here.
google avatar

Ray M.

Yelp
Me and some friends visited this place around 11 AM on Saturday morning. And I am so glad we gave this place a try! It was about half full, but they was still plenty of seats for us to sit and enjoy our donuts. Everything was incredibly clean. And the atmosphere was pretty calm. I tried two donuts, one was a Nutella filled donut and the other was Horchata donut holes. The texture of the donut was wonderful. There is an incredible amount of oven spring, mix with wonderfully delicious dill. There wasn't very much Nutella in this donut, but just enough to get that wonderful flavor mixed with that sweet puffy dough. The Horchata donut holes were also delicious. Cinnamon sugar outside, with a delicious cream filling on the inside. Honestly, I wish I would've eaten more of them! All in all, this is a place I would definitely come back. Great donuts, great environment, and very friendly staff. I was actually really surprised because they also sell candles. I was very tempted to buy a baking candle to take home as a gift. This place is worth a visit.
google avatar

Yelp
I love stopping by here every time I'm in the central coast. Love their aesthetics, vibes, & of course donuts. They're very fun and quirky. Always excited to see the whimsical donuts they have each time I visit. My most recent visit I found that they have the spiral donuts. It's been going viral in the Bay the past year so it was nice to not wait in line. Also it was really good. It's nice grabbing donuts to go and then heading to dt for a coffee or tea. Also bonus that they have ample room to study/work/read a book.
google avatar

Debbi A.

Yelp
They get outstanding reviews for a reason. Hands down the best donuts I've ever had! The variety of different flavors and kids of donuts with interesting combinations and just the quality of their products is amazing I couldn't stop myself from eating three donuts in one night I'm so going to pay for this when I have heartburn in the middle of the night for eating so much sugar but worth it
google avatar

Denise D.

Yelp
It's our first time here so went a little overboard and got a dozen to try. First one we devoured was the boysenberry cream cheese doughnut, and it was glorious (the one with the pink dot); if I lived in the area, I'd probably get one of these daily if I could (so maybe it is a good thing that I don't live in the area). We then tried the espresso filled doughnut, and it was good and creamy (just didn't hit the spot like the first one .... Maybe if I had a hot coffee to pair it with it might have been better, but I wanted to try the Thai tea which was delicious) ------- Update: box has been finished and my personal favorites are the boysenberry cream cheese, the strawberry cream cheese, the crème brûlée (delicious custard filling) and the seasonal strawberry crunch old fashioned. While all the donuts were tasty on their own, pairing it with a cup of coffee just elevates it. Will return when back in town

Justine G.

Yelp
This was such a cool stop on the way to Los Angeles! We ordered a chocolate cake donut and matcha donut. The matcha donut was unique and had a strong tea flavor. I love Asian flavors, and this was super yummy. As for the chocolate cake donut, I thought it was basic and nothing too special. The inside space was cool and it looked like a lot of students were studying inside. You can play board games, and it looks like a fun spot to hangout with friends!
google avatar

Yelp
A must have for any donut lover. We stopped by around 5pm on a weekend. Not crowded at all. The interior is way bigger than i thought. They have a large selection of donuts and friendly staff! Some of the donuts have cute designs. Our donuts were great, but I could tell they were either made earlier in the day or the night before. I'd usually take a star off for that, but the taste alone was enough for me not to care. Lavender donut - delicious and light with a hint of lemon. Matcha - a true matcha where you can taste the culinary grade powder - none of that fake stuff! Their donuts aren't over sweet. Would definitely be great with hot tea. Their gluten free cake donuts were great as well. We got chocolate, vanilla, and lavender with fruity pebbles. HIGHLY RECCOMEND! Will stop by again!
google avatar

Maria G.

Yelp
Another great find on our drive down to LA. Delicious and creative donuts! Life is too short to skip the donuts but make sure they are from this place. It's all worth the calories. Service was great. They were very patient and was happy to introduce us to their donuts. Ambiance is very welcoming. Very clean and nicely decorated. Already looking forward to our next stop there.
google avatar

Jo W.

Yelp
Stopped by here because my friend is a fan of their donuts. Service was very nice and quick, and there were plenty of seating. When we visited on a Sunday late afternoon, there were a bunch of people in there working on their laptops or hanging out with friends. I had one donut. The lavender is very delicious and the frosting tastes very strongly of lavender. I can't comment on the other donuts, but they did look enticing, and I was tempted to try matcha too.
google avatar

Lauren W.

Yelp
The cream cheese pillow donut is THEE best donut I've ever had in my life. I was visiting SLO for a friend's wedding and on my way out of town stopped to get a donut. I am so grateful while also regretful that I don't live in the same town as this shop. I also ordered a dirty chai late which wasn't the greatest because for my first sip I got a mouth full of powder. I won't dock a star for it though because the donut made everything better ‍

Yelp
It's closing time and there is something missing from your night out. You struggle to pinpoint the exact reason for the yearning that is growing stronger and stronger. As tears begin to form and the sense of loss becomes all encompassing you realize what will fill the void! DONUTS .... Maple glazed.....chocolate old fashion.... And crème brûlée!!! SLO- Co Donuts has just what you need! Okay so nobody really needs a donut but come on, once in a while won't kill you
