18 Iconic Seattle Dive Bars

"No bar leans into Ballard’s seafaring roots quite like Sloop. The place even launched a yacht club (meaning racing boats rather than Jeff Bezos-style) with trophies displayed prominently. Other key dive bonafides include reclaimed wood, flannel-clad regulars silently watching sports, and a menu that favors anything deep-fried. Seattle’s Best Dive Bars | Eater Seattle

"Home to the “Slooper-size” — 33.8 ounces of cold, crisp, beer at a shockingly low price — the Sloop is a Ballard fixture beloved by newcomers and locals alike. A nautical theme and a surprisingly good veggie burger makes this feel like a particularly Seattle-y establishment." - Meg van Huygen

Why Seattle Is One of the Best U.S. Cities for Food and Drinks

"The city’s bar scene is filled with dives and cocktail lounges, ensuring there is something for every kind of drinker. There are the historic dives like Sloop Tavern, home to the “slooper-size,” which is 33.8 ounces of beer at a very low price, and Hattie’s Hat, which has been operating since 1904, always has a weird VHS playing, and is crowded with dock workers and college kids alike." - Daniel Modlin

Google
My favourite spot to drink for sure! This place has unbeatable prices and really great food.

The Princess and The Troll

Google
A fun, local place. The drinks were cheap and the food looked good. We had great service from the bartender (I think her name was Cindy). She was very friendly and outgoing. The bar was also dog friendly and had pool tables. If back in the area, we would definitely visit again.

Google
The food here is really quite good and also good value, consistently so. The onion rings are especially great. Vibes and atmosphere are like a neighborhood bar, not all that divey to be honest. Everyone's chill, and there are darts and a pool table along with a jukebox.

Roxanne Murphy

Google
My favorite spot in the city. Great pool tables that are affordable, great bartenders, cheap beer, and good food. It attracts the right people and a great place to be on a Friday night.

Google
Great dive bar with great service! Food is average and cheap! Oh yeah and a great price on beer! I’ve been going to The Sloop for years and years. One of my favorite spots in Ballard to grab a quick beer and eats. Dog friendly and they have a small area for outside seating when the sun is out. Darts and pool too!

Google
Excellent vibe. Pretty wide open, way bigger inside than it looks. Pool, arcade games, affordable bar food. Clean-ish. Pints or giant beers, good selection on tap and in bottles. Off the Ballard Ave drag so definitely more of a locals bar.

Google
What a great dive bar! They have two pool tables, some arcade games, the Mandalorian Pinball machine, good food and great prices! You have to go up to the bar to order food and drinks but they'll bring the food to your table. Great place to unwind and let loose.

Collette Kitchell

Google
Love this place and the staff! Cyndee is the best. The burgers are the delicious and very affordable especially compared to rising prices in Ballard restaurants! Definitely try the Hawaiian or the mushroom bacon swiss burger!

Yelp
Sloop is amazing. The burgers really hit the spot when you're hungry. They're simple, straightforward burgers and fries and the food comes out quickly. The beers on tap are exactly what I want when I come to Sloop and it's easy ordering at the counter. It's got a classic vibe and I've enjoyed it every time I visited. It's low-key, casual, and nice for hanging out with friends after an active day. I hope this place never closes down.

Yelp
The food portions are generous as well as delicious! Fish and chips were great and the coleslaw was a good addition. We'll be back for take out for beach picnic evenings!

Yelp
We stopped in before a movie at the Nordic museum. I've missed going to dive bars! The Green carpet is a vibe. There are 2 Pool tables and a few arcade games. Plenty of indoor seats and 3-4 Outside tables. The beer was average. There are even Lottery cards for sale.

Yelp
Sloop is a cozy spot in Ballard. We enjoyed two plates of 2-piece cod fish and chips that came with the option of regular fries, waffle fries, or salad. There were multiple choices for dips/dressings as well, and we chose to try the blue cheese for our salad. Salad portions were generous, the fish were fresh, and we really liked the waffle fries. The staff who served us was attentive and friendly too. There were some game machines on the other side of the bar -- looked like a fun place to come with friends on evenings!

Yelp
Picked up lunch for coworkers a couple Fridays ago. Cheeseburger was ok. Cheap price and tasted like it. The club sandwich was atrocious and my order of a burger dip. Are you kidding me. Two frozen hamburger Patty's no seasoning. Slapped on a slightly toasted roll and that's it no cheese huh? Au Jus was tasteless. Couldn't even eat half of it. Never again
google avatar

Yelp
A neighborhood favorite! The ambiance is always friendly and warm--it's not too big or small of a bar and with the layout and lighting it feels cozy. I come here for the games (buck hunter and occasionally, darts) and the beers (option to go big at 34 and 55oz). We got nachos to share and it was okay, it was a bit salty so the sour cream was helpful.

Yelp
Solid dive neighborhood bar - it gets packed here on the weekends with the locals. Love they have mini corn dogs. They are so cute and filling! Great accompaniment to whatever you're drinking at the tavern. Check this place out if you're by the locks - the chicken strip meal looked out of this world and I can't wait to try it next time I'm there.

Yelp
A classic old town dive bar in Ballard with pool tables, darts and pull tabs. The highlight for me are the burgers which are actually really solid for bar food. My go-to is a bacon and blue cheese burger with choice of grilled or raw onions and a wide selection of potato/fry options. We've always had the same blonde bartender/server and while I don't know her name, she's always got a great attitude and takes excellent care of our group.

J J.

Yelp
Garbage. I was sitting there enjoying my meal with my family when a black couple walked in and they would not serve them. Both of those bartenders walked out of the building. It was so sad and disgusting sloop. You need to jump into 2024 I don't care about color I'm white and black, mixed but you can't treat people like that we're all the same. hatred only hurts yourself. My ancestors are hillbillies too but y'all need to grow up.

Yelp
Great place to stop by if you're around the area. I was at the Ballard Lock and after me and my friend came here for lunch. Found out this place is awesome. Cozy, vibing, and dive bar style. I looked at the menu and wow the food here is great and generous price for what the economy is nowadays. Mostly everything is still under $10! You can't beat that. I will support this local Tavern fosho! Overall, definitely will be back here!
google avatar

Yelp
Nautical themed Ballard Bar on the "outer limits", so it's not in the typical twenty-something Ballard fray. Nightly food specials make it hard to choose from the special and the regular menu items. Home to beer batter fish and chips huge schooners of beer "the sloop". The Nachos are good and plenty even on the half order, and there is a good selections of apps. Roomy tables, bar seating, and pool tables make for a fun place. The service is friendly and attentive.

Yelp
I've lived in Ballard for years and LOVE this place. Friendly staff and patrons! The best bar food and cold beers etc!

Yelp
This is the place to grab a meetup after sailing rock climbing playing together at the Golden Gardens or the Locks Beer and good bar food See ya then.

Yelp
The Sloop is the last tavern in Ballard so of course my wife and I had to go check it out. Free parking can be found on the street or in the back of the Sloop. Visa and MasterCard are accepted forms of payment. Indoors one will find: pull tabs, arcade games, darts, pool tables and TVs. The Sloop offers a decent selection of craft draft beer. The Sloop offers an extensive food menu that pairs nicely with beer. My wife and I each ordered a Sloop size (34oz) Manny's and Seapine IPA for $10 each. Frosty deliciousness paired nicely with a sunshiny day. We shared the Mini Corn Dog (qty 8) appetizer for $5. My wife loves these little nuggets so she was thrilled to see them listed on the menu. Our server, Wil was outstanding. Friendly, knowledgeable, funny and happy. If you like unassuming and unpretentious places as much as my wife and I do, be sure to drop into The Sloop the next time you're in Ballard. Thank you Sloop for keeping it chill.

Yelp
Best fried food in Ballard They have all the good stuff: Mozzarella sticks Wings Fries (extra crispy) Onion rings Chicken tendies 34 oz beers

Yelp
OMG, THE BURGERS! Don't bother with any other food here. Do yourself a favor and get a cheeseburger. You'll thank me later. The only other cheeseburger in Ballard I really like and will go out of my way for is at Giddy Up's, but I live close enough to Sloop to walk there. You can play songs via the TouchTunes jukebox, play pool, play pinball (and they have the Ghostbusters pinball machine), and buy pull-tabs. The only thing you can't do here is drink liquor, because they don't have a liquor license. And you probably can't get naked in here, either. At least, I wouldn't advise it. And that sucks. The liquor part. But, whatever. Get a Rainier beer and a cheeseburger, and your life will suddenly be ten times better.

Yelp
I love sloop! Been coming for years now, the staff is always so great! We really enjoy Cindy and Karl. Patrick is great too if he's around! Always a great experience and have always left happy. Recommend it to everyone I know!

Yelp
The Sloop always make you feel welcome and at home. It's a part of Ballard that is a hold over from days gone by. I have never had a bad meal here and the price is right. A great value. They have weekly dinner specials. Friday and Monday is steak night. It's big, juicy and always cooked perfect. Comes with salad and baked potato. It's big enough for two, or take home leftovers. Burgers are the best as well. It is the best price for a quality steak in Ballard. Great staff as well. I hope this institution never leaves, it's special.
google avatar

Yelp
The Sloop is the best dive in town. Plenty of games, TV's, and sometimes a few dogs pop in. Prices are fair and the people are great. Sloop rocks dude.

Yelp
Love this place, great food friendly staff and the jut box has a wide variety of music! I left my phone one night while here and when my friend called it the bartender picked it up and stayed after close so I could come grab it. Drinks are very reasonably priced as well! Definitely my favorite bar in my neighborhood.

Yelp
Classic Old Ballard. The staff is great and friendly. Food is always awesome. Never leave Ballard!!

Nice place to grab lunch. Great burgers. Clean. a certain ambiance. Cole slaw a bit bland, but good.

Yelp
Awesome little dive off the beaten path. A must go to bar in Ballard! Great food, atmosphere and cold beer!

Yelp
The Sloop is a good-ole northwest tavern where local fisherman and landlubbers alike can kick back with a cold one after a long day. It's right on the western edge of Ballard, so it isn't infested with hipsters like some other beer halls in our tiny burg. Thirsty? Choose from the brews. Hungry? Club sandwich and chicken burger are tops. The food is good and prices are reasonable. Order a giant Slooper beer or a schooner, but be patient with service. Relax and enjoy Ballard the way it used to be: friendly and unhurried. They've got some swag items for sale, too. Here are some of my fantasy tag-line ideas that aren't quite ready for prime time: Get your Sloop on. --------------- Regroup at The Sloop. --------------- Sloop in the slip? Slip into The Sloop. -------------- Be a super Slooper...sail on in. -------------- 65 years and still Sloopin' -------------- Sloopersize me!

Yelp
staff assumed I was the help. ignorant never going back

Yelp
The Sloop Tavern is the perfect antidote to the typical, upscale Ballard Bar. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a craft cocktail but sometimes I just want a large, cold stein of cheap beer and some bar food. The Sloop is celebrating its 65th year in Ballard and hopefully it's around for another 65. The Sloop is a no-frills kind of bar with cheep beer (you can get a 32oz stein for about $4), pool tables, buck hunter, and pull tabs. It reminds me of a typical townie bar from the Midwest. The patrons are a nice mix of new Ballard residents and "old timers." And the food far exceeds expectations. Fish and chips are solid and their buffalo wings are the best wings in Seattle-- and I'm not being hyperbolic about the wings. The wings are super tender and fall off the bone, nice crispy edges, and they're meaty. See you at the Sloop!

Khalil H.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing service here. I'm not sure of the male bartenders name but he was a white guy, very accommodating. The drinks are good and they've got a good selection too. I love the juke box because they have a wide selection of music and the volume is perfect level. Definitely a favorite bar of mine in the greater Seattle area
google avatar

Jim B.

Yelp
Take a seat and get yourself a Sloop sized draft beer. You will find yourself right at home here if you are a dive bar fan like myself and so many others. This place has so much personality you can taste it before you even walk in. Most important to me though is that a dive bar has good food and Sloop delivers here. Typical bar menu but they take their food seriously so everything is good including one of the best burgers in the city. Sloop Tavern is absolutely my kind of place and I hope to be a regular at some point. I'm working on it.
google avatar

Bonnie B.

Yelp
Friendly, tasty, cheap. The best locals spot we've yet found in Ballard. No hard alcohol, but a good selection of ciders and beer. Probably wine, too, but I have gone there yet. Pool is pretty cheap and there's a variety of other games.
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
OK, I know this is just a dive bar. And I've been here before and it's been what you'd expect. The food is kind of like a diner would have... Which doesn't mean that it's bad. I've had some decent burgers and some palatable fish and chips here. Today however was a different story. It was around 4 PM when I arrived. I hadn't eaten lunch so I was really hungry. I sat down and the female bartender came and took my order of a Seapine IPA and a bacon cheeseburger with fries. The place was "lightly" occupied. There were a number of people seated at the bar and some guys playing pool, but it was a very chill atmosphere. I didn't see anybody eating, just drinking. For some reason that I can't fathom, and certainly not due to any kind of rush or busyness, my food took a really long time to get to me. The kitchen wasn't cooking for anybody else so I don't know how that happened. I heard the bell ring indicating an order was ready, which I assumed was mine, and looked forward to my meal arriving, but my server didn't show up until at least five minutes later, after a second bell. And, horror of horrors, though no surprise, my food was cold. The french fries looked like they had been cooked over and over again and they were cold. The burger was cold. The place wasn't busy, no other food was coming out of the kitchen, why was my food cold? I wish I were the type of person who would say, nicely of course, it's cold please get me a fresh one or whatever, but I'm not. I'm glad sites such as yelp exist where you can talk about your experiences without a big confrontation. The bartender, my server was a very nice lady. She was super sweet and friendly and I liked her personally. I don't know if she went AWOL when my burger was first ready though, but she definitely let me down with the cold meal! 11/14/2019 I revisited The Sloop with some friends, despite my unfortunate experience the prior visit. Although the place was popping, we were happy with the service. I decided to take a chance and order the fish and chips (I chose waffle Fries). Everything came out hot and delicious! This was a good visit! And I will be back.

Jeffrey K.

Yelp
One of the only real bars left in Seattle. Zero pretense, good food, beer, pool, and good people. It's not fancy, but I doubt that's what you expected if you're here.
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
If there is one thing in the world that I love, it is a good dive bar. As I was cruising in Ballard my eye was instantly attracted to this little joint. My small little group agreed we should hit up this spot after lunch. If I could box this bar up and take it with me, I would!! I loved this place! My friend told me we had to get the "Slooper." Sign this girl up! If you want to know what that is.... You should probably put this place on your list to visit. This spot has a ton of personality and the people were very friendly. We got the corner booth right by the bar, aka the rock star booth!
google avatar

Liliane D.

Yelp
This place doesn't make any apologies for what it is, a hole in the wall with great food and large cold beers at a reasonable price. Hungry? I strongly recommend the BLT, Reuben, or club sandwich (not on the menu) with seasoned waffle fries. If you order the club sandwich (my favorite), split it. You'll thank me later. This sandwich is huge and soooooo good! Thirsty? Their huge beers are cheap, and cold! (no full bar)
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
The Sloop is an institution. You don't go there for the refined ambiance and gourmet food. I love the old school neighborhood dive bar vibe. I always get a Sloopersized Rainier. Free billiards on Tuesday. Pull tabs and Big Buck Hunter. What more do you need? Ignore the whiners. Get some friend food, drink a cheap beer, and relax. This isn't Cap Hill.
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
I'm a fan of a good dive bar, but would say this one is just alright. The service was pleasant but slow. For example, when we came in and sat down, it took awhile for her to come over to our table for the first time. The food was priced great. The food itself tasted good, but wasn't food that would bring me back. We got the fish and chips as well as the nachos. Fish and chips was mostly good, one of the fish pieces was soggy, not crunchy and the tartar sauce was not very good. I like that they use wild cod, and the ones that were crunchy were good. The nachos were pretty good, and were not skimpy on the toppings. My complaint with the nachos is that I wish they had house-made parts like guac and salsa, otherwise they're something I could easily throw together at home. Was fine that we went, but I probably wouldn't be back since the food was pretty basic.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to pop in for an afternoon snack after we spent a couple hours wandering around the Ballard locks and watching the boats! We had about 4 hours to go before dinner, so our party of four split an order of Slooper nachos, cream cheese jalapeño poppers and a club sandwich. The club sandwich was cute because the waiter had it plated in fourths after we mentioned just once that we were going to share the food. Nice attention to detail! Although the food wasn't really my fav (I'm just not a fan of jalapeños,) the guys gobbled it up quick! The table next to us had the famed 32oz beers that looked impressive. The turkey club was good, nice amount of meat, thick carved cut style. Since they plated the 1/4 sandwich for each of us separately, the pickle on the side was also cut into fourths! lol! Cute! Beyond this, the waiter was friendly and service was very quick. The place wasn't too packed though it was a gorgeous sunny day and the locks were busy. All in all, nothing to really write home about, but it was convenient and tasty tiding us over until dinner. Of note: Really cool murals on the side of the building! Would be a fun picture spot!
google avatar

Viktoriia K.

Yelp
This is probably not the best place if you like fish and chips. Portions are really small and you can get dead french fries:( Besides their meal, the restaurant looks kind of dirty, and you don't have a lot of wish to be sitted there.
google avatar

Alexandra P.

Yelp
Hooray for dive bars! Theres no way you can not like The Sloop Tavern. It's not the biggest bar, but they make best of their space. And of course you can't forget the famous sloopersize beers! I've been here quite a few times, its usually at the very beginning of a long night stumbling around Ballard. They have two pool tables, one dart board (that breaks sometimes in the middle of a game), golden tee and my favorite...big buck! It's a great place to kick back with some friends and have a few beers. Very centralized location so, it's easy to get around from there.
google avatar

Pete S.

Yelp
I came here for one thing...to start an old fashioned bar fight in a ancient fisherman's drinking cove, and once I realized everyone was nice, I opted for the other mythical item served at this location, the double cheeseburger with seasoned fries. First off, I couldn't believe the quality of presentation on this burger. It looked like an advertising photo! At this point they had me, no way does a burger look like that and not taste great and you know what, IT...WAS...YUMMY. No more to say, but you better get the seasoned fries, or you'll be escorted out of the building by a fishmongers daughter.
google avatar

Megan C.

Yelp
Great little bar in the back corner of Ballard. If you're looking for a fancy meal...do not come here. If you're looking for a cheap meal with a beer...come here. I've only had the taco Tuesday, which was good. $6 for 3 tacos. But usually I come here for the fantastically cheap beer. SLOOPER SIZE ME

Yelp
I've been an irregular visitor of The Sloop since I started racing sailboats out of Shilshole Marina in the mid 70's. It was the perfect spot to spend the last night with bandmates before I got married in 1990. And now that I have moved to the Kitsap Peninsula in 2015, I try to make it a point to visit The Sloop whenever I visit friends in the city. The vibe is chill, the prices are still some of the most reasonable you'll find anywhere in Seattle and the regulars are still friendly and always have a smile. The Sloop is one of the last institutions of its kind in Seattle and if you haven't visited, you should.
google avatar

Trisha F.

Yelp
At first I thought, "How could I not have reviewed the Sloop?" and then I realized that the Sloop is just that-- forgettable. No full bar here, fellow lushes. Just a questionable selection of wine and some beers. I am not a beer drinker, so I will not comment on that selection, but WOW. If all you are going to sell is beer and wine, you should probably stock a little more than Sutter Home and Chateu St Michele or whatever other crappy stuff I was forced to swill here. They do have a lot of pool tables, which is cool, some video games, and a very laid back vibe. Needless to say I will not be back until someone else drags me in, as was the case with my first visit.
google avatar

Erin B.

Yelp
PERFECT DIVE BAR. and more! The games definitely make this place a step above the rest but come for the cheap and delicious basic food groups (chicken strips, burgers, nachos) and the magnificent MUG of beer. I haven't had this quantity of quality beer since Berlin. And that is saying something. Plus the waitresses is a gem! Tip her nicely you cheapskates- skimp on beer prices, not on tips. Please feel free to make ample jokes including the word sloop, it is all in good fun.

Pete J.

Yelp
Went there tonight with a small group only to find the bartender to be really rude. It could be because he was the only one working and the place was pretty full. Either way he gave a lot of attitude which I know ,from working in bars, it is not the best way to act toward customers. I don't know his name but slight build with black glasses
google avatar

Andrew M.

Yelp
Giant "Sloopersized" mugs of beer for $4-7?? I'm getting thirsty writing this review! The Sloop is a great casual bar, slightly off the beaten path in Ballard. Although that just makes it easier to find parking. But I'd suggest leaving the car at home all together since driving anywhere after you get your hands on a few Sloopersized beers is not advised! On top of the great beer prices, the place actually has pretty good food as well. I recommend their burgers, quite good. They've also got a decent number of TVs for catching a game, darts, buck hunter, and pool tables. My one complaint would be that service can be spotty... ranging from great to you'd need a flare gun to get any attention. Obviously, this is usually a product of how busy it is at the time since they usually only have one or two people working. Also... don't go in expecting to get a margarita or a martini, the Sloop is a tavern, meaning BEER. And that's just fine with me.
google avatar

Tim A.

Yelp
Great food on site or take out. The staff members have always been friendly and efficient. I love this place.
google avatar

Katie A.

Yelp
Sloop it up to experience, but in my "elite member" opinion, this place has gone a little down hill- just slightly, people. I still love it.. but I liked the old crowd better- the longshoreman, the sailors.. the LIES! In the last few years, it's become a refuge for white hats- the frat crowd. It's not too terrible, but it becomes that way on weekend nights. Big Buck Hunter, a decent Juke, and pool.. pretty great for crowds- you can usually find a table. Stick to the weeknights and the uber cheap 32oz beers for $6 (microbrews- $4 for the cheap 'uns). I haven't eaten here- and I never will. If you've ever been in, you'll see why. Two Sloopersized Mac n' Jacs down the trap.

Yelp
My wife and I are from Seattle, but now live in SOCAL. We moved to Seattle in 2017 to deal with some financial issues and discovered the Sloop Tavern in Ballard. What a find! We love good "tavern food" and the Sloop has it in spades!! Our favorite was the fish (Cod) and salad! Sooo good! The food, service, prices are outstanding and it is a tried and true, good old tavern!! I wish that we could move it to SOCA!!
