Small Cheval Gets an Opening Date in Logan Square | Eater Chicago

"The Logan Square location replacing the long-running ice cream stand will debut on Monday, July 14, at 2815 W. Armitage Avenue. Ownership (Hogsalt, the hospitality group behind Bavette’s and Au Cheval) acquired the original stand in 2023 and has incorporated the stand’s name onto its ice cream menus. The concept is a spinoff of Au Cheval, first debuted in 2015 in Bucktown, and has since expanded to several city and suburban locations." - Ashok Selvam

I miss OG Freeze, but glad we have this. Burgers are as good as other Small Cheval. Seating is great. Bathrooms have AC and clean. Early early happy hour is awesome. Pro move: order your ice cream after you’re done with food using QR codes on tables. Don’t let that ice cream melt!

Picked up an order; chicken sandwich add cheese ($) extra sweet pickles and fries. When I got home and opened it I was sadly disappointed to find no cheese and the set for the burger, onions (which I hate) and dill pickles. Tried to call; but no answer on their end just an automated message. :(

First time visiting this restaurant for dinner and looking forward to my next. Good food, great service and fun vibe…drinks and ice cream was a plus on a beautiful Chicago evening! Thanks to the management team for trying to keep it going with a non-stop line!

The vibe here is fantastic! The root beer float and the shake were also delicious. The burger and fries though? They were eh. Au Cheval has a great burger. Small Cheval though? Probably the driest, tasteless burger I've had. We had the one in Wicker Park a few years back and thought we had a bad batch but seems like it's consistent as it tasted just as bland years later at a different location.

Every time I order a hand dipped cone I always have to remind them to actually dip it in the chocolate even though the menu shows it as hand dipped by default and I specifically mention hand dipped cone initially. This has happened twice now. Tbh it doesn't seem like the staff's fault, I think the upper management just doesn't take ice cream seriously (I haven't had the burgers yet). Details matter and I notice especially when it comes to ice cream. Also it shouldn't take 10 minutes to get an ice cream cone. And finally one more issue, get rid of the 3.25% restaurant surcharge which is hiding behind the cups!!

I waited 15 minutes for a simple soft serve. I told management. They realized they messed up. Offered a refund, and I refused as that was proper hospitality courtesy. However, I think it would help if they had two windows like the previous establishment. They're trying to put out burgers and ice cream through that small space. It is such a shame because I was hopeful that this would be different.

While nothing can replace The Freeze, this place comes close. Super family friendly, but folks should be encouraged to share seating. Several folks spread out across entire tables with only parties of two or three. Also, no fault against Small Cheval, but there are way too many folks with only marginally well behaved dogs and little concern for the ways in which their dog’s behavior impacted those around them. Even as a dog owner, I would prefer if the restaurant didn’t allow dogs.
