The Best Caviar and Tinned Fish in Philly | Eater Philly

"Small World Seafood’s business model is easy to love: just sign up for its weekly newsletter to see what’s available, and order for pick-up at its Northern Liberties storefront or one of its other pop-up locations in the city. Although its inventory changes regularly, it often keeps caviar and tinned fish in stock, with past items including trout roe and wasabi tobikko, a Japanese roe perfect for sushi and poke bowls." - George Banks-Weston

I love getting fish from Robert and Andy and everyone else at Small World Seafood. Quality is top notch and pricing is very fair and they remember your name (and even the couple of times I’ve messed up and missed ordering deadlines etc they have been super accommodating..

I started ordering from Small World Seafood about 8 months ago and am now a consistent customer and order every Friday I am in the city. I cannot speak more highly of the quality of the seafood and friendly service for pick up. I have tried many varieties which have all been incredible tasting and fresh! Every time I pick up, I always am met with great customer service, including wonderful recommendations for cooking!

On behalf of my sisters and I, thank you, thank you, thank you for an extraordinary experience at SWS. We appreciated your welcoming personality, your insight to the restaurant business and of course, your impressive wealth of knowledge of the seafood industry. How lucky were we to get that one-on-one time with you to tour your store as well as the distribution facilities. You were more than generous with your time and Small World Seafood products. I was especially impressed with how you stepped up to the plate during the Covid crisis and used your business to help and support the community. Your passion for good quality seafood is infectious; your emails are educational and enjoyable and your mission is purposeful. You have a new fan base in us. We will be singing your praises to our colleagues in the culinary field. See you at the Chestnut Hill and Bryn Mawr farmers markets. We will be looking for the next email and updates. With Much gratitude,

Zack W.

BEST SEAFOOD purveyor in all of Philadelphia and beyond. Hands down, without a doubt. I have been buying from Small World Seafood/Robert Amar for a few years now and every single thing I have purchased has been amazing. The fish rotates throughout the year and it is top quality and always either fresh or blast frozen on site. Here is a sampling of the many types of items I've bought from SWS: Faroe Island Salmon (sushi grade), Ahi/Albacore/Big eye Tuna, Swordfish, Mahi Mahi, Striped Bass, Grouper, Rainbow Trout, Flounder/Fluke, Spanish Mackerel, Shrimp, Greenland Turbot, Red Mullet, Red Snapper, Bronzino (both whole and filleted), Redfish, Sea bass, Skate wing, Jonah Crab, Blue crab, soft shell crab, lobster meat, mussels, clams, oysters, local cheese, olive oil from Italy, local mushrooms, local pasta, babka making kits, Smoked whitefish salad, homemade fish cakes, local cheese, Lox, and even dog treats made out of cod fish parts! There are recipes posted on the Small World Seafood website that are easy to follow and beginner friendly for those hesitant to cook with fish. I'm grateful for Robert Amar & Small World Seafood and I should have posted this review years ago! Sign up for the email list, place your order on Wednesday and you will not be disappointed. Also, Robert Amar is an incredible human being and you are supporting a fantastic local business! Thank you Robert Amar & Small World Seafood!

Google
Love their seafood and weekly service. As good as anything you can buy at any high quality restaurant, if not better!!! Highly recommend their related products too, such as labneh, bacon, sausage, and smoked fish, usually from other local businesses. Speaking of such, a very nice way to support a local Philly business, who supports other locals. Highly recommend!!!

Google
Small World Seafood has the best quality and service of any fishmonger in town. They are an online operation and each week they send out an email to tell you what's available based primarily on timeliness and freshness. Customers then meet their truck at specific points in the city on specific days. For us, it's in front of the Hopkinson House in Washington Square on Fridays. Their products are always fresh and delicious. If the halibut or tuna isn't good that week, they won't offer it. If it's out of season, they won't sell it. Pricey? Yes. But well worth it. Personally, I would only buy seafood from either Small World or the very fine John Yee in Reading Terminal Market. You can't go wrong with either of these great shops.

Google
The best fish you will ever eat at very fair prices. Such a fun way to buy fish - Robert cares about every piece of fish he sells! And gives great ideas for prep. I highly recommend.

Yelp
We love what Robert and team are doing! This pandemic born business has certainly made a difference for us in ramping up our cooking game, but also often eating healthier as well. We appreciate the standard items that are available often like the salmon, but also really look forward to when other items enter the mix. I always look forward to lobster, for example. They always have something for everyone (that eats seafood, at least). I love that they also support other local businesses and have had items from places like Oui Pastries, El Camino Real (their bacon is delicious!), Third Wheel Cheese, and more. It's helped us try a lot of things we normally cannot access as easily. With pickups in several locations across the city or on N 4th St, it can be convenient for most. They also have some other shipping options, but I cannot speak for that as I live incredibly close to their base so pickup is quite easy for us. If you like seafood, I highly recommend Small World Seafood!

Yelp
Small World has me eating well every week! They have delivery stops around the city but I go to the brick and mortar store in Northern Liberties for pickup. There is metered street parking as well as a parking lot that is free during pickup hours. You sign up for the mailing list, order on Wed and pickup on Thurs. The emails every week detailing the trials and tribulations of fish supply are so colorful and have been something to look forward to during the pandemic. I love trying new types of fish and being able to prepare restaurant quality food without the restaurant quality prices! My favorite has been the soft shell crabs, which I deep fried as tempura. They sell the fish in 2 lb packs, which is usually too much for me to cook at once, but the fresh fish freezes nicely. They also engage with other local businesses to sell their goods, like herb butter logs and beautiful mushrooms. Everything I've ordered has been amazing and delicious- lump crab, mussels, lobster tails, cod, Arctic char!
