NYC’s New Restaurant Openings - New York - The Infatuation

"Smiley Coffee is a cafe from a company that trademarked the  smiley face back in the 1970s. The same company also markets smiley-face wine, and clothing, and everyone who works at their Lower East Side spot wears the requisite yellow uniform. Drinks include matcha lattes and a signature Cloud Cap—essentially an iced cappuccino with cold foam." - will hartman, willa moore, molly fitzpatrick, sonal shah, bryan kim

Great cappucino - on the sour side of espresso, thick foam consistency and beautiful latte art. The vibe inside is great, with moody brown and yellows. Only complaint is that there's not enough seats or table, and the other window seat don't even have a table. There is an open space that can be better utilized. We tried their jasmine cappucino, they use real tea leaves grounded into a syrup. It was a bit sweet, but still good. Coffee is expensive though at $6.50, way more expensive than other coffee spots in the same street, and I can't even have a dine in cup or enough seats.

I ordered an oat milk latte and it tasted sour. I wasn’t sure if the milk itself was bad or the coffee beans themselves have very acidic notes, but my coffee unfortunately was not very good- but my husband’s Americano tasted fine. The service and aesthetics are good, but coffee has not yet been perfected.

Google
I feel like Smiley Coffee deserves a much higher rating than the current 4.2. Some people leave critical reviews over small details, even though the shop executes things far better than most coffee spots. The coffee is phenomenal, the matcha is amazing, and spot-on. They recently added food, and it honestly tastes just as good as I expected. Overall, everything is high-quality, well-made, and worth it. Would absolutely go back and definitely recommend. I honestly think people default to negative reviews simply because it’s easier than crafting positive ones—but this place is doing it right.

Google
I absolutely LOVE this place for the ambiance, the aesthetic, and the way it feels like European cafe culture. The staff is also very friendly, and I love that they play jazz music inside. HOWEVER, and I hate to say it, the coffee is not very good. It appears the baristas are not dialing in the beans correctly and either under or over extracting. If they’re able to master this, this will undoubtedly be the spot. Nothing worse than loving everything about a coffee shop, except for the coffee itself :(

Loved my visit to Smiley Coffee! Sitting at their outdoor tables on a nice day is such a treat, perfect for people-watching in NYC. I tried the special cherry foam cold brew and it was amazing – so unique and delicious. The foam was light and the cherry flavor wasn't too sweet. Great coffee, great spot!

Google
The place was nice with cute aesthetics and lovely staff. I ordered the cherry foam cold brew and it tasted really bad though. The coffee was incredibly sour and it had a really off taste, I don’t know what it was. It genuinely left me feeling sick the whole day. I’ve seen a few similar reviews of sour coffee so would recommend looking into that, I think there’s potential for this to be a really great spot location and aesthetic wise it’s just the coffee was awful.

Google
I have never paid more for a latte in my life. $10 + ! Was it good? Yes. Was this because I paid so much, probably. Would I go again? No way. However the staff is so incredibly nice, just can’t believe the coffee is so expensive.

Stopped into Smiley Coffee Shop while I was roaming around the city. The coffee? Smooth, strong, and priced like they actually care about folks just trying to get through the morning without burning a hole in their pocket. Place had a warm vibe, people smiling like they meant it. Felt good to sit there for a bit. Only thing that got to me was seeing a dog jump up on the counter. I love dogs, don’t get me wrong, they’re better than most people. But where folks are getting their coffee and food? What got me more is that no one said a word to the dog’s owner. That’s really where the issue starts. You can’t blame a dog for being a dog but someone’s gotta step in when it crosses the line, especially in a place serving food All in all, worth stopping by if you're in the area. Just hope they keep the counters for the coffee, not the canines. – Zach

Yelp
cute little cafe! the matcha was alright but the cold brew was really good. a bit overpriced for the amount because the cups are TINY, like so small. a good one time visit but probably would not be back in all honesty. the baristas were really nice and the service was pretty quick so that is always a plus. minimal seating options so most likely is a pick up and go unless you get lucky and find a seat

Yelp
I popped by to check this cafe out as I have been seeing it across social media. It's part cafe, part clothing store with some bench seating indoors and a few tables outdoors. The ambiance is very cool with lots of dark wood tones and pops of a mustardy yellow. It's a very Instagram worthy aesthetic. They have a pretty solid menu of coffee and tea drinks, alongside some signature drink items. I ordered the coco matcha cloud and it was really good. My only qualm is that the drink was $7.50 and absolutely tiny. The service was warm and friendly, but I don't know that I'd go out of my way to come here again.

Yelp
Cute place. Took a while for latte to come out when there's three people on staff and I'm the second person waiting for my drink. But the coffee was pretty good. I would come back and get it often. But be warned the cup is like either 8 or 10 oz for like $7+. But quality is not bad.

Yelp
This is a cute coffee/ clothing shop. They have other accessories too. I had never heard of this place before seeing it on social media. Their menu looked good for coffees and other drinks. I went with the Cloud Capp as that is what the viral drink from this place is. It was tasty but comes in a small cup and for the price it's a bit steep. The cold foam disappears quick if you are not a fast coffee drinker like myself. I would go back and try one of their other drinks. The staff who worked here when I was there was very nice. So, honestly I would give this place 3 stars. But the coffee and customer service mad me it go up to 4. There is really nothing that special about this place to me at least.

Yelp
As a New Yorker I have no problem paying up for coffee and / or waiting in line, but Smiley Coffee was next level ridiculous. There was NO wait to order and yet they insisted people line up outside (forcing hype?). Even more egregious was my "Cloud Cap" that cost $8+, had less than 6oz of actual liquid and the cold foam was totally nonexistent. Avoid!!

Yelp
Had a matcha with macadamia milk - super smooth, no sweetener necessary :) Loved the vibe too, such a pretty spot.

Yelp
Came here with my husband on a Sunday afternoon. I got a matcha and he got a cold brew. Both were delicious and the matcha in particular was great, not one of those places where it just tastes like a cup of milk. The place was really pretty also!

Yelp
I am obsessed! Adorable branding and ambiance. Coffee and pastries are delicious and so reasonably priced, especially when compared to other specialty coffee ships these days. One of my new favorite coffee shops. The merch is also super cute!

Yelp
This place is nuts- my size "small" was $9 and the cup is the height of my index finger
