The 2022 Eater Carolinas Holiday Gift Guide, North and South Carolina - Eater Carolinas

"If you really want to impress the home cook in your life, show up with a recently released large-format Dutch oven (it holds 7 1⁄4 quarts) from Charleston-based Smithey Ironware. This big boy can handle cooking for bigger groups — which makes it perfect for the entertainer or sizable family in your life. Smithey’s signature finish will never chip or crack, and it looks great just sitting on the stovetop." - Erin Perkins

Smithey Ironware is a truly outstanding company. Our commercial kitchen had very badly rusted and damaged grates on the CharGrill. After not finding any cast iron restoration company that would take on the task I reached out to Smithey. Within ten minutes after sending photos, Lilly, my contact, had reached out to her restoration shop manager and he said YES! The process was so smooth and simple. I'll I had to do was purchase their restoration package on the website. They sent a Fed Ex packaging label and instructions. In spite of the three cumbersome packages weighing 96 pounds total, it was only $120 in shipping fees to the factory and return shipping was paid for by them. In less than 3 weeks I had completely restored grates mailed back to me. If I had to purchase new ones it was over $1,500 and they wouldn't have been have as perfectly seasoned. I recommend everyone watch their short video on their restoration process. If you have a rusted cast iron product, they will bring it back to life. I'm a Smithey convert and can't wait to add their pans to my kitchen inventory. Not only were the professional and efficient but also some of the nicest people in the world! Thank you, Smithey!

I've been a Smithey Ironware customer since 2019. I own both cast iron skillets as well as their carbon steel. These are by far the best cooking tools I have ever owned! In addition, this company stands by their product 100%. The customer service I'v received from Trevor Funderburk, Gil Semple and the rest of the team is second to none and always gives me a good story to tell about my experiences with them and their products. Thanks to all of the Smithey Team!!!! Sincerely, Rodney Lewis

I sent my great grandmother's cast iron skillets to Smithey for restoration. They are not smithey brand. All I can say is the customer service and the restoration of my two pans was exceptional in every way. Thank you

I've been a loyal customer of this company for many years. The products are beautiful and of good quality. Our house burned down in the Palisades California fires in early 2025. The fire was extremely hot. Almost none of our kitchen implements survived. Lodge, Staub, Le Creuset all warped beyond usefulness. All Clad completely melted. The only things that survived completely unscathed were some 100+ year old Griswold cookware. I couldn't find from the rubble any of our Smithey items other than a paella pan and a 14" double handle skillet. They had significant cosmetic damage, but still seemed useable. I contacted Smithey to see if they could restore them at a fee or give me instructions to restore them. They said they didn't make the same paella pan anymore so they couldn't replace it with the same model but they would replace the items under warranty. I told them I just needed help restoring them but they insisted on replacing the items with new items. They even replaced the paella pan with a newer model. The fire was obviously not their fault and they had no obligation to replace the items. That's a pretty good lifetime guarantee.

As you can see the pan is rather new by its color. First off let me say I've been using cast iron my entire life . I've seen pictures of people on here complaining about the cast iron. Obviously some people brag about knowing about cast iron and yet still managed to burn the pan. Anybody who knows anything about cast iron knows you raise the initial amount of heat to reach the desired temperature. Once the temperature has been reached you lower the amount of heat to sustain the desired temperature. I've seen people with burnt pans and blaming the smithy ironware company. Even after claiming that they know what they're doing. Obviously you do not! So stop leaving bad reviews unless you know what you're talking about! With that said.. unlike other cast iron pans other than maybe a Griswold, I was able to do exactly that , raise the heat to the proper temperature and then lower the heat to maintain it. The results you can see for yourself! Nice and even toasting on both sides of the grilled cheese that I made for my daughter! Their pans are nice and heavy which helps maintain the temperature without having to keep the heat up! Anyone who knows anything about cast iron knows that the heavier of the pan the better it sustains the heat. Again don't embarrass yourself by taking pictures of a burnt pan and claiming you know what you're doing when the outside diameter of the pan is still fairly new. They will now gain the loyal customer for life!

Followed all instructions, however eggs and meats still stick to the pan. Reached out to the company. Was blamed that I did not use it the right way. However, followed instructions. Biggest negative, even after it became clear within 2 weeks I won't be able to use the pan, Company refused refund. No refunds ever. They compared the return to wearing shoes and then wanting to give the shoes back after wearing!

I've been buying Smithey pans for 5-6 years now and they are my go to when I cook (which is frequently). Recently I had one of my pans warp and Smithey was kind enough to repair it for me. Fantastic products and fantastic service!

I purchased a polished cast iron pan from Smithey and began using it right away. Initially, the pan stuck and performed poorly compared to my existing stainless and cast iron pans. I researched the company website and found seasoning instructions which I followed exactly and the pan still stuck. A brief note about me: I cook regularly and often and enjoy cooking. I’m familiar with proper heating and seasoning techniques, which are really not that complicated. I frequently cook eggs in various formats in my stainless pans with zero issue. In any case, after reseasoning my Smithey pan twice it still had issues; cooking meat, veggies or eggs. To the point that I started not wanting to use it. This was disappointing as their ads make it seem like a product that will last a lifetime and they frequently advertise eggs being swirled around in the pan — those are the reasons I purchased it. After reasoning the pan it looked awful. The aesthetic looked like cooked grease, and the seasoning frequently chipped off exposing bare metal elements. Again, not demonstrative of their advertising nor comparable to other cooking surfaces. I reached out to customer service who told me I used too much oil when reseasoning, which, I hadn’t. I applied maybe a nickel to quarter size amount of avocado oil, spread it very thinly, and baked per the instructions. Next, customer service said I could pay to ship the product to them and pay to have it restored. At this point, I was tired of all the work and messing with the pan. It simply hadn’t lived up to their claims. When I asked to return the pan, they do have a strict no return policy. When I asked to escalate the issue, a guy named Trevor said he would call and never did. Several weeks later and after multiple email attempts to reach any one else, I gave up. This company does not stand behind their product. Companies that do, would take care of their customers. They do not. As-is the pan sits on my shelf and I plan to throw it out.
