A Smoking New Barbecue Spot Is Headed for H Street - Eater DC

"Forthcoming barbecue restaurant Smokin’ Pig is remodeling a former Atlas District dive bar in the hopes of serving smoked ribs, brisket, and whiskey this summer. The area newcomer is moving into the space formerly occupied by Kitty’s Saloon." - Tierney Plumb

This place is small but it's a vibe. Dre the manager was awesome and Tori was awesome too. I've been to Texas and had Texas BBQ and this place was in all ways superior. Amazing brisket. I had the cowboy which is a burger with pulled pork in it and other things. Sorry I don't have a photo of that it was gone too quickly. I do have a photo of my wife's loaded baked potato with Mac n cheese and brisket. That was amazing as well. To sum it up: an amazing hole in the wall spot.

The chicken was OLD. I'm pretty sure I got reheated OLD chicken from a day or two ago. Not fresh at all. The brussel sprouts are a bit salty but the flavor was really good; just heavy handed on the salts. The ribs were DRY. The baked beans were pretty decent and the large baked potato was good.. the pulled pork was super vinegar-y. Way too much vinegar and way too tangy. You can't even taste the meat. $60 wasted. I bit a bite of each and couldn't do it. Absolutely disappointing. Everything was DRY, SALTY AS EVER OR OLD. You'd think at 1:30pm on a Sunday it would've been fresh lunch foods. I really wanted to like this place but nothing in my taste buds would allow it.

Google
A great local restaurant, where you can to watch a game and share drinks with friends. The meat was so tender it fell right off the bone. One member of our party raved about the giant turkey leg, stuffed with homemade mac & cheese. Our fully loaded baked potatoes were packed with flavor. Our server took great care with my food allergy. Thank you, May, for making tonight's meal both safe AND SPECTACULAR!

Stopped by after a full day hoping for a good meal and a comfortable atmosphere....well all our expectations were not only met they were exceeded. Nanci our hostess/bartender/waitress and chuck the pit master were an exceptional team. The meal was delicious and the aforementioned team were welcoming hosts. Is your travels bring you to this side of DC be sure to stop by and pay them a visit.

Went at 5 pm on a Thursday. Service was good, food was great. A lot of spice in the pulled pork. Cilantro coleslaw was unique. Mac and cheese had good seasoning. Drink special was strong and tasted great (Mango Henny). We would go back again.

Google
If you go ANYWHERE, go here. The food was out of this world. The greens were perfection, I got a chicken sandwich with Mac and cheese and I think I licked the plate. The service was amazing. They almost couldn’t fit us in and totally accommodated us- they were friendly and kind and the vibe was perfect. Seriously best BBQ ever. Just go.

Google
Came in just to order some Togo food and have a drink while I wait. Was greeted by Nancy and she was so attentive and kind to me. This was my first time here and she was very patient with me and helping me with my order since I had trouble figuring out what I wanted. Made me a fantastic margarita while I waited for my food. Also shout out to Chuck for also assisting me with my order and answering some questions I had while I was here. He knows how to throw down back there on that grill ! Food was delicious. These guys are so professional and nice. Will be back and I’m bringing people with me!

Google
Amazing southern BBQ! The food was the best we had in DC on our 8 days being there. Nanci was a great server, very attentive and nice. Gave the atmosphere 4 stars only because the music was very adult rated and we had kids with us. If we're ever in DC again, we will definitely go back.

Yelp
The Happy Hour was HAPPYING: During my second visit, I had the spiked lemonade, which was nine dollars and massive --plus smoked wings (not on hh$! with Carolina Gold, barbecue sauce, and another spicy barbecue sauce--paired with delicious collard greens. The bartender was super friendly and the scene is real chill. A great post work, unwind venue.

Yelp
Our waitress was very kind. We sat at the bar cause the tables were a little wobbly. Me and my partner ordered 1/4 ribs and 1/2 of ribs which comes with two sides. My ribs were really salty, but the sauce was sweet so I wish it could have cancelled it out. My mac and cheese was bland. And the beans tasted like they were in a can. My partner's had the better sauce.

Yelp
Decent BBQ here, but the service is super slow and not very attentive. I wouldn't recommend coming here if you don't have an hour or two to burn. My wife and I ordered 2 Smokin' Aces combos ($22 each), which consists of chicken, 2 ribs, and your choice of beef brisket or pulled pork, 2 sides, and bread. My wife told the server she had a gluten allergy and couldn't have the bread or wheat products. And guess what was on the plate when the food finally arrived? Yep, 2 slices of bread on both of our plates. After ordering, we sat for what seemed like forever until they finally came over to apologize for the delay and that the kitchen was tied up with Uber Eats orders and would get to ours soon. Ok, then why was the table next to us already eating their BBQ sandwiches when they arrived after us? Also, didn't those Uber Eats orders come in before or after I placed my order?! When our food came, not only was there bread on both plates even though we told them that my wife had a gluten/wheat allergy, they only brought a single tiny disposable container of BBQ sauce!! How ridiculous when we ordered 2 BBQ combo plates at $22 a plate!! We asked for more, but they only brought 1 tiny container each time. Eventually, I just gave up and ate my meats dry. There's no reason 2 BBQ entrees should've taken nearly 2 hrs! Not recommended unless you have a lot of time on your hands, or are looking for a place to drink and chill. Not a place to grab a quick bite; that's for sure!!

Yelp
This is the first time I've ever eaten somewhere and had to send the food back. It was basically inedible. Staff didn't seem surprised that I couldn't eat it. Never going back here. Terrible! My husband choked down some of the food but ultimately threw out more than half. The best thing about this place is leaving.

Yelp
This place is a ViBe!!! Randomly was on Hst with my good girl friend, looking for a nice brunch spot. All the hot spots were full and long waits, so we stopped by Smoking pig on the humble. This place is a GEM. Great vibes ! Great music! Diverse atmosphere, Good food!!! And what a great bar tender / manager (Travis) was. Also this place is black owned With a very diverse group of people coming through. I can't say enough things about this place. Me and girlfriend both was happy and said this will be our Lil spot to come kick it and chill every so often. Thanks smoking pig for the love and great food!

Yelp
I ordered 1 pd of brisket, potato salad, collards and mac/cheese. I recieved less than a pound of brisket, too much mustard in the potato salad and not so tasty mac/cheese. Gave a bad review to Uber Eats and they did refund the money for the brisket but that was nice but did not cover the food not received which left 2 people hungry. Maybe eating in we would have received better. Will not order from there again nor recommend this place to my friends. Too bad because the brisket itself was good.

Yelp
First visit but solid 4star. Amazing service from bartender Don. Very friendly, helpful with recommendations, and efficient. I enjoyed the atmosphere and decor. Lots of nice touches to compliment the BBQ theme. I enjoyed the combo, called the Smokin' Aces. Choices between brisket/pulled pork and the brisket was so good. It was tender, tasty, and full of flavor. I also enjoyed the chicken. I went with the dark meat vs white. It was great, almost melted in your mouth tender. The two ribs were a wonderful taste for what demands a revisit for a half or full rack. Great flavors all around. It comes with two sides so I tried the Mac and cheese and the brussel sprouts. Both were good but nothing amazing. The Mac was real cheesy and sprouts were crunchy. Bacon on the sprouts would have been a welcome upgrade. $2 cola refills and $.50 for additional bbq sauce. I enjoyed the Memphis and tried the Carolina as additional charge. The Memphis was great. Hard to comment on the Carolina since I don't love mustard (I had forgot Carolina was a mustard base...oops). No desserts. For a Saturday night, they weren't too crowded. Definitely give them a try.

Yelp
shit was terrible, they don't serve alcohol because they don't have there liquor license because the dumb ass owner forgot to renew it, the food was dry no flavor and there was a smell in the place, they have an upstairs that's not even open either, this place six balls!

Yelp
To begin with we had the best service with our waitress, she was kind and very prompt. We ordered the ribs chicken and brisket and it was all delicious. The greens were fantastic. We walked from the neighborhood we were staying in.

Yelp
I'm hoping this is a one off, but the chicken in my order was raw (see photos). I was pumped about a new que place in the hood so ordered from Doordash recently. I got the Smokin Aces (ribs, chicken, brisket) with the mac n chz and slaw, as well as a turkey leg and a side of Brussels. I originally got the turkey leg with Alabama white sauce but they called me to let me know they were out of it so I asked for that girl's suggestion and ended up with the Carolina gold sauce. The turkey leg was GINORMOUS and really really good. Crispy skin on the outside and very moist on the inside, you don't find too many que places around that do turkey legs like this. Ok on to my combo. It was ok. It wasn't bad, but I wasn't blown away by it. Pretty standard by que standards. Except that while I was eating the chicken, I found that it was raw and had to throw the rest of it away. Thankfully Doordash makes it easy to resolve issues like this so I just filed through them and they gave me money back on that platter. The mac n chz and brussels were pretty bland to be honest. Slaw was good! I'll probably give this place another shot, but won't be ordering the chicken.

Yelp
The food was great. My husband had the wings and they were amazing. I had the big bbq and it was really good. Music was great in the bar and the bartender was very helpful! Only downfall, I'm not a huge bbq sauce fan. Would've liked to be able to have the sauce on the side.

Yelp
I knew it was bad when the entire ride to my destination I smelt NOTHING! I got the Smokin Aces that came with 3 meats, I chose ribs, brisket and pulled pork. They forgot to sub out the chicken so they gave me a side of pulled pork as well. My sides were baked beans and greens. The "baked beans" taste like can pork and beans with a strong red bell pepper taste. The greens taste braised, but were some how dry and lacked flavor. The brisket was dry and flavorless, ribs not tender and under seasoned. The chicken, that I didn't want, was the tastiest. NONE of the meat taste as if it were grilled or smoked! Maybe "Smokin" means the pig was off that yeah! After I ordered I notice the different bbq sauce flavors. I asked and she said they charge .50 cent per bbq sauce! What?! Oh, the pulled pork was sweet. I, personally, don't like sweet meat so that was a No as well. This was an unfortunate disappointment......

clarissa t.

Yelp
I give this place no stars at all just received my order. I order a 1/2 slab ribs only received 3 pieces which was the end part of the ribs. This ribs were dry overcooked with like to no sauce. The Macaroni & cheese was try with no taste at all. For a person who love ribs & nearly eat out was very disappointed. I will NEVEV order from here an again. Oh!! I spent a lot of money to throw them ribs in the trash. NEVER!! If you want food with this place just go in. Save yourself the headache. SUCKS!!

Yelp
Someone left a review and stated how they have never had to send back a whole plate of food. Let me be the second person that agrees with this statement because I almost did the same thing. Let's start with the hair in my canned beans. The beans were so basic they had to be from the can. Secondly the ribs were mixed old and maybe fresh mixed. There is no way my order of ribs were cooked that morning. Now I did not give my hairy beans back to the server because I just felt so disappointed that I just gave them that as a--it happens. After trying to eat old mixed with I assumed fresh ribs I was just done with this place. My lady got the brisket and man was it fatty and again not fresh. I've had Lewis Barbecue in Charleston SC so I know a good brisket. This food including the sides wouldn't cross the South Carolina border--just simply not edible barbecue. I mean to be a so called Chocolate City where's the excellent soul food? DC is a place where you can get drunk, lounge and talk who's who and all the federal jazz blah blah but when it comes to great street foods you'll be kind of left without and hungry. I live here in the immediate city of Alexandria Va so I know the area. Fine dining for sure but good soul food it's lacking baby. They even served this expensive dinner--55.00 plus automatic 18% gratuity with cheap plastic spoons dining in. I really felt bad for the family of five that sat down as I was leaving my entire plate almost untouched. The patron asked how's the food? If he was paying attention to all the food left behind he'd understand it was not good at all folks. H Streets has to have better venues than this place because this is not it. No pics I wouldn't want to misrepresent with pics that doesn't tell the true story of a lousy place to eat in DC. Do better

Yelp
Normally, I would drive to southern avenue to get some pulled pork barbecue . But today, I decided to try Smokin Pig located on H S.T. NE. What a mistake I made. The services were not good at all. I arrived there a little after seven- I ordered three sandwiches and rib tips. I waited over an hour just for the cook to come and say my food was given to somebody else, really!!! When my food finally come out, the cook basically said I took care of you. I get home!! So dam!!disappointed!!!!! Rib tips were so tough and dry. The barbecue sandwiches called big moma were so skimpy. They looked like two pieces of bread with two scoops of meet dry and tough. Below is a picture... This is terrible, back to Good Ole Johnny Boys where they over load you with meat and sauce on two fresh buns..

Yelp
I was really excited to welcome this BBQ joint. I've gone here three times now and here's my opinion: while the bbq itself is tasty, their service isn't great. Every time they get my order wrong in some way. Today they mixed up two of my sides again -- I ordered mashed potatoes and sweet potato fries and instead got potato salad and regular fries. A good restaurant pays attention to all the details, and this isn't acceptable. I would suggest that if you ever order from here and do pick up, be sure you actually got everything you ordered.

Yelp
Unbelievably dry. What the hell is this dry ass Turkey leg? Smokeless BBQ at its finest. This was some garbage for real. Can't wait to light my own damn pit after tasting this mess. I hope someone learns how to smoke meat up here. So disappointed.

Christopher W.

Yelp
Drove all the way from Alexandria VA just for them to be closed when google and the front door times stated they are open. What a fucking waste. 0 Stars

Yelp
Great spot for some bbq! Food was delicious with a variety of menu options. However this place is small so be sure to go early or on a non busy day. Unfortunately while there we heard the cooks arguing, but the waitresses were reassuring.

Yelp
Nice addition to the H Street Corridor. We have tried this place two times, the first time was during the first week of opening and the second time is well after. Extremely, unnecessarily and painfully slow. Both times we ordered from here we were quoted 15-20 minutes (from the restaurant and via online ordering). We waiting 45+ minutes for our order. The salmon sandwich is delicious and very filling but it doesn't take 45 minutes to prepare salmon. The macaroni and cheese and collard greens were extremely bland and not to our liking. They ran out of ribs the first time we came and I cannot say I'll ever get to try them because honestly driving the extra 5 minutes to other barbecue place is worth it to avoid the ridiculously slow wait times here. Additionally the staff is very lackadaisical about orders being late and/or running out of food. I hope this place can get it together.
google avatar

Morgan D.

Yelp
I'm going to cut them some slack because I ordered my meal two hours before closing on a Sunday night. I ordered the ribs, mac and cheese and onion strings to carry out. They were onion rings and pretty thick - not what I was expecting - but ok. The mac and cheese, while definitely made in house, was bland. The ribs, though, were inexcusable and nearly inedible. Burnt, tough, dry. They had been cooked individually- so, the little meat that was on them was desiccated. Had I been eating in house, I'd have sent them back, as I carried them out, I just wasted money.
google avatar

Yelp
The best way to describe this place is to say its above the average but not above average. My standards for BBQ are really high and while Smokin' Pig probably beats alot of places it is not exceptional. My test is always the brisket, and while decent it was lacking the development you see in outstanding briskets from other places. Sides were good. I appreciate the sweeter baked beans. If I could give 3.5 stars I would. Definitely worth a visit and a good option in the Atlas District.

Soraya B.

Yelp
We ordered today (to pick up) a disaster not meals: plain jane potatoes: we got a potato without any butter or cheddar cheese. 2 brisket sandwiches : the bread was too soaked in the sauces that it was impossible to eat it, just a mess. And the WORST, 2 The outlaw: we only had 2 slices of ground beef, no bread, no tomatoes, no letus, noooothing...... We spent 100$ to get shit not food.

C S.

Yelp
Lucky to have stumbled upon this place. The best brisket I have ever had. The ribs were perfect, and the service was great. The only thing that went wrong was they didn't have vermouth for a martini but mom didn't care. Wish I lived here I'd eat here a lot!! Thanks!
google avatar

Karina U.

Yelp
The food is BANGIN! We ordered the cowboy burger and 1/4 pound of ribs and everything was tender and juicy. The Brussels sprout side was something else entirely and the seasoning is just magical. The Mac and cheese I could take or leave though. The table behind us got a Turkey leg stuffed with it and it looked massive. Service was very friendly but new and didn't know how to make some drinks or how to combine checks because for some reason they started as split. The downer of my experience was when I asked where the bathroom was and was told by the new employee to go downstairs but there was a leak in that bathroom that was splattering everywhere and I have no idea what I got all over me but it was disgusting. I later found out there was a perfectly fine bathroom upstairs where we were eating...

Melissa H.

Yelp
Tried placing orders twice this year, but service is super slow so I never received my orders. Save yourself the headache and pick somewhere else. My order tonight was cancelled after waiting over 1.5hrs.
google avatar

Princess L.

Yelp
Omg 5 stars. Just go and get some. My food was delicious. I could've ordered 12 wings but i was being good. The bartender Sparkle is amazing. The food taste just like grill food and everything was perfect.

William M.

Yelp
This place recently reopened for indoor seating after many months of doing carry out only. They have hired new kitchen staff. The place was empty on a Thursday night but they served up extremely good brisket and chicken. All the sides (mac, brussels spouts, beans) were spot on. Kids loved it. The chef came out to make sure we loved the food, which we did. Only feedback is that the beer wasn't completely fresh, nor did they serve it in proper pint glasses. Also, it is very odd that they only accept orders through UberEats and Door Dash. I saw the bartender turn down a customer who wanted to order there and carry out. Why send somebody away empty handed? Anyway, work out a few management kinks and this place gets added to my rotation for sure.
google avatar

Fancy2Fierce ..

Yelp
This place seems like a vibe for cocktails and talking.. but the food was a no or not right now for me. I got the Smoking Ace (thinking I'm saying it right) which was 3 kinds of meat & 2 sides that totalled up to $24.20. The meat was overly seasoned... Mac and Cheese was crumbly and the Collard Greens needed like 35 more mins of cooking but okay. Will I go back? No but thanks for the experience
google avatar

Yelp
So...I really want to give this a 3.5 but because it is a black owned business, I will go higher than lower. Y'all already know that I am going to KEEP IT REAL! First, let me say that the food was AMAZING! We ordered the salmon BLT, rib platter, and pulled chicken platter with a side of fries. The food was really good! However, the WAIT was longggggggg and our order was a bit mixed up. We ordered mashed potatoes, greens, coleslaw, and macaroni and cheese. We received potato salad, macaroni and cheese, and fries. The young man that brought the food was adamant about the sides not being on the receipt...and we were adamant about what we ordered. After a minute of going back and forth about it (he was not rude, really nice) we were like forget it. I mean it really irritated me that instead of him asking the young lady (that was 10 ft. away) about the order, he gave us the side of coleslaw and was like, "Please just tip my bartender!" SIR, we tipped her already! Over 20 percent might I add even though this is a take out order that we have had to wait almost an hour for. My suggestion is to order ahead so you can avoid the wait. My favorites so far are the fries, the salmon BLT, and the coleslaw. I LOVED THE COLESLAW.

Yelp
I'm not sure if I just caught them on a bad night, but I ordered the Tennessee salmon sandwich and it was simply terrible.

Yelp
We were just about to start our 5 hour drive home but decided to make a quick stop for some BBQ and this place was absolutely so good. The staff was super friendly and I will make it a point to come back next time I'm in town.

Yelp
Very nice local bar with barbecue BBQ. The pork ribs are outstanding. Cash & Kiyah will take very good care of you. Very friendly atmosphere, good drinks good food good vibes.

A D.

Yelp
Tender, delicious beef brisket and ribs. Collard greens delivered great flavor with just the right amount of vinegar. Coleslaw was fresh and tangy. Potato salad - delicious! Can't go wrong here, and the people who work here are gracious and charming. We'll be back.
google avatar

Ellie N.

Yelp
Went out on a limb to try this place while we were in town, and we were not disappointed! The food and service were great! Perfectly spiced pork and ribs, hot and ready in just a couple of minutes! Unfortunately, I did not get to try the cocktails, but the bar looked fully stocked! Would highly recommend!
google avatar

Stephanie J.

Yelp
This food was the bomb- I got BBQ chicken and my boyfriend got brisket and they did not disappoint! The staff is so friendly and was very patient with my indecisiveness. Thank you for a wonderful dinner!

Yelp
So happy we happened upon this place. A good friend of mine and I were looking for a place to grab a bite, and we could not be happier with where we ate. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel at home. The food was delicious, the staff was friendly- what more could you ask for?

Andrey M.

Yelp
Came in for a couple of drinks, asked the bartender how much a margarita was and happily got 2. But when I got the check, they charged me 50% more than what they told me and didn't seem to care at all. There were only 2-3 other people inside, it wasn't busy; oh well, don't recommend it.
google avatar

Tuba B.

Yelp
My friends and I came here right before close. Cola put up with our antics. She also made some great drinks. Food was great. Will be back coming back for sure

Mike B.

Yelp
We put in a large amount, nearly $200. First, the stuffed potatoes, Mac n cheese weren't seasoned AT ALL, the burger was dry and over cooked on the outside and medium in the middle, and the greens tasted canned. When we arrived home from ordering take-out, we noticed a side order of collard greens and several sauces were missing and called to let the restaurant know. The man who answered the phone was argumentative and said "I put all the sauce in the bag." The manager then took the phone and said everything was ok and if we could come back and we agreed. When we came back, the manager argued with us over the amount of sauces we could get, like we weren't owed the sauces THAT WE PAID FOR. Why are they so defensive over sauce? We'll never know. They didn't even mention anything about the missing side, which cost more than the sauce(s), they gave us that with no issue. We'll never go back, avoid this place and their bad customer service. After driving back to retrieve the missing items, no one said thank your for supporting nor did they apologize for the mistake.

Robert T.

Yelp
Not a lot of space inside. Service took a while & the kitchen was backed up. Did have on the Final Four game which was the reason why I was out in the first place. Decent food, just felt like I caught them at a bad time. Ran out of the beer I wanted too

Dynise B.

Yelp
Amazing!!! Walked into the bar area which is kinda small. They do have an upstairs but it was closed at the time. Great music playing and customer service. We had a party of 9. We arrived during happy hour 4-7pm. Their beer, drafts, and rail drinks were discounted. I think rail drinks were $3. They also have cocktails which are $8 on happy hour. I got the Hst Lemonade- Tito's vodka and lemonade. Me and my boyfriend shared a dozen smoked wings. I wish I got a picture because they looked great and they were delicious. Everyone was so friendly. I will definitely be back.

Dean P.

Yelp
Picked up ribs and sides from them this past weekend for a small party. Some of the best I have had in DC. Price was reasonable. Menu is complete. Owner and staff are friendly and helpful. My new goto place for takeout or eat in bbq.
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
Pretty good food. But though! Prob a 4 star but I give it 2 cuz I ordered takeout via Uber eats, showed up early and was told it would be about 10 more mins. I waited outside for 10 mins, came back inside and asked about my order. I saw what seemed to be my order on the table. Watching that sit, cooling down, I asked two employees about my order and they didn't do anything and then finally they gave my order after five mins of me standing there watching my food lose its luster.

Cisco F.

Yelp
Amazing place that makes you feel like family. I was recommended this place from someone that used to live here while I was on the big island of Hawaii. It lived up to the hype and satisfied my bbq cravings. The wings were amazing and the Mac and cheese were on point. The owner Bernard came out greeted us and made sure everything was good. If your in the mood for bbq or to have a drink this is your place.

Yelp
We stopped at this little spot our first night in DC. The smell is what we noticed first. The drinks were strong, the service friendly, and the food was amazing! We tried the ribs and brisket and they didn't disappoint. Would definitely eat here again.
