24 Hours in Taipei: What to Eat in Taiwan’s Capital | Eater

"A decades-old ice cream parlor (70+ years) celebrated for adventurous, unconventional flavors—examples range from salty shredded pork and pig’s knuckle to bitter melon, Taiwan Beer, red-hot chile, and spicy green wasabi—alongside more traditional choices like red bean and green tea; the founder embraced novelty and challenging flavors." - Leslie Nguyen-Okwu

Google
The one and only!!! Must try! 😁 Especially for those adventurous ice cream flavours. Really yummy. Owners or staff very nice... If you order two scoops, they make sure you finish the first before serving you the second.

Google
In Taipei it's not easy to get a European style ice cream, and it gets quite close to that. It's not cheap, but has very interesting flavours so I tried the meat floss and lychee. Meat floss really tasted like that, although it was a little creamy - I would recommend only to adventurous people 😅. It's funny that they exhibited a lots of awards and articles, but if you look closely those are actually about the owner's running results, not the ice cream. Nevertheless, I think it's worth a visit, this is the closest you can get to a gelato in Taipei:)

Google
2025.04 Just look at all those varieties of flavors..!!!! Really impressed by this place and the owner~ The staffs are nice and the ice cream was good, a bit sweet but are good and rich! We ordered kidney beans, sesame, passion fruits, strawberry, chocolate cookies and cream. I wanna try the meat floss next time~

Google
Disappointing experience. The ice cream was overpriced for what you get—taste was very average, nothing memorable. The staff seemed indifferent and the service attitude was quite poor. Definitely not worth the price. If you’re in the area and craving something better, I highly recommend Yongfu Ice Cream nearby—much better value and a much friendlier experience.

Google
Passed by this ice cream many times over the years but never went in. Finally decided to go on a hot day and it was just alright. It’s a traditional store located near Ximen that serves a variety of unique flavors, like Taiwan Beer, Pork Floss, and Kaoliang liquor. We weren’t feeling too adventurous so we got some of the fruit-based flavors. Service is quick and the manager is relatively curt with her interactions with customers. No samples are available, she just kept saying “imagine the flavor, but cold” repeatedly. Seems like it’s advertised to foreign tourists abroad as there were a couple others that came in while we were eating there who weren’t Taiwanese. Although the flavors are unique, not sure if I’d come back to try them. We’ll see

Google
I tried the savory ice cream with meat floss in! Very unique experience. But overall I would say It’s alright if you came from NZ/ Australia where ice cream/ gelato is as good as! But it’s good to eat and chill and it’s near the train station too.

Google
I visited this icecream shop since 2000, when I was young I didn’t have a lot of experiences having icecream like this place and it blew my mind! I remember there’s a flavor with mixed fruits but I couldn’t find it last time, but still I had their pork floss and longan icecream and they are still good

Google
The weirdest and most interesting ice cream I have ever tried!!!! How can they make ice cream from pork floss, chicken or chillie pepper??? Must try in Taipei!

Yelp
Ascend the stairs and you will find yourself in a kind of old timey ice cream joint plastered with newspapers proclaiming the greatness of this ice cream place. So place your order--they have very eccentric options ranging from lychee and guava, to meat floss. I was blown away by the depth and just how realistic the flavors were. The guava literally tastes like guava--in ice cream form! There isn't any feeling that it's artificial or added sugar--it's like they have transformed whatever flavor they wanted to capture right there to an ice cream in a bowl. This place really stood out to me and I will be back to try out the rest of the flavors on their menu!

Yelp
I had taro and guava flavors. Both are great! Taro is the flavor you can only find in Asia, especially in Taiwan. Guava is the tropical fruit that is popular is Taiwan. The ice cream shop serves total 73 flavors! Can't wait to try more in my next visit!

Yelp
We love ice cream especially ones with unique flavors. This place has flavors that I guarantee you've never heard of or have tried! The staffs here are nice and even grandma spoke a bit of English. There is a lot of seating and there was no wait when we came by on a Saturday at 5:45pm. It's too bad we waited till our last night to try this place because we definitely would have loved to try their unusual flavors like pork knuckle or sesame chicken! We got a scoop each of chrysanthemum and custard apple. There was a strong flavor of the chrysanthemum and the custard apple was light. We loved them both. Not sure if they offer samples like they do in the US, as we didn't ask. The ice cream melts fast so eat up quick. They accept credit cards too.

Yelp
Ice cream shop on the second floor that is highly rated and interviewed for their unique flavors. If you're ever in the area this is a must try. They have I think over 30 flavors to select from but the ones on the board are the most popular flavors. The ice cream is legit the flavor it claims to be. Even the park floss tasted and had pork floss in it. Something really unique to experience if you're in the area

Yelp
Creative and unique ice cream flavors. I tried the wasabi (surprisingly very good and not overpowering), kidney bean (subtle earthy flavor and lightly sweetened, and jasmine tea (not strong in flavor but still mellow and sweet)

Yelp
If I wasn't so determined to escape the sweltering weather, we would've missed the unassuming door-to-a-stairway entrance from the street. There's no visible sign in English to Snow King Ice Cream - located on the 2nd floor of the building. Luckily I vaguely recognized the Chinese characters 雪王冰淇淋 (Xuě wáng bīngqílín). I was a sweaty mess from following my teenage niece and nephew shopping throughout the nearby Ximending area (aka teen shopping heaven). My mouth was dry, my head was pounding, my legs trembling with fatigue. "Let's eat ice cream!" I announced. "Aunty, I'm lactose intolerant!" my niece cried, still wanting to shop. I don't care, we're all going to Snow King Ice Cream! We managed to snag the last few counter seats near the window. They offer some crazy ice cream flavors like pork floss or kidney bean or even Taiwan beer, but since it was my first time here, I ordered my favorite flavors lychee (they spell it litchi) and watermelon. My scoops arrived in old fashioned ice cream glassware and it was the perfect respite from the Taipei city heat! I love this place! Quick, friendly service. Seems like it's family-run with a cute little grandma at the cash register.

Yelp
Great little ice cream shop that may be difficult to find because it's upstairs. My favorite ice cream shop is Salt & Straw in Portland and Snow King doesn't exactly compare to the uniqueness since it's not a blend of flavors, but they make flavors out of food items you don't expect. They have an English menu here. Yay! Not sure if we met the owner or just the lady that works there, but she was super friendly. Had a scoop jasmine tea ice cream and the tea flavor was nice and strong. I loved how it wasn't overly sweet. If you are trying multiple flavors, the lady will tell you what order to eat them in since some flavors are stronger than others. Worthy visit!

Yelp
This place was a little bit hard to find but it was worth the search! The sign for the place is a small bright light blue sign. I believe all the ice creams were homemade and they were all so good. No worries for foreigners because the lady can speak pretty good English! I got the strawberry, mango, peach and Kaoliang. The strawberry was my favorite and the Kaoliang tasted just like you were taking a shot of whiskey (which i should've known)! A little bit too much for me, especially since I was hungover from our night out from before. Definitely worth a shot trying this place out. They had a TON of different flavors as well!

Yelp
This ice cream shop is on the second floor and it have so many flavors to choose from!! The staff were very friendly and brought the ice cream over to us after we ordered. My boyfriend and I started with one flavor each, longan and watermelon. The watermelon one was amazing and you can taste watermelon pieces! There are also seeds inside. I wasn't a fan of the longan but my boyfriend enjoyed it. Afterward, I was ready for seconds and I got the passionfruit which was also very refreshing and delicious like the watermelon. It also had seeds and was on a bit on the sour side but so good! I will definitely come back to try the other flavors whenever I'm in Taipei again. But I'm too scared to try the savory flavors hahah.

Yelp
Snow King is one of my new favorite finds in Taipei! It's a small ice cream shop located on the second floor- definitely easy to miss if you're not paying attention to the sign (my friends and I had to backtrack). They serve lots of local fruit and tea flavors, as well as some more eclectic flavors such as kaoliang and pork knuckle. The ice cream here is lighter than ice cream back in the U.S., so it makes me feel like I can indulge a little bit more. I came here with three friends and we got scoops of hibiscus, peach, chocolate chip, white wine, lychee, oolong tea, mulberry, and guava. Each scoop ranges from about 80 to 120 NTD, and all the flavors we had were super delicious. Guava was a standout surprise for me. I felt like I could sit in Snow King and eat ice cream all day. The family that runs the place is super friendly and speaks a little English. Highly recommend for the local vibe and delicious ice cream!

Yelp
This place has been around for decades, and they definitely deserve to keep going! One of my good friends recommended this place to me as a stopping place during any down time on my itinerary. I was surprised that my mom had come here for ice cream when she just graduated college which was back in the 70s so of course I wanted to check it out and support them! While each scoop of ice cream was probably $5-6, it was worth it cuz there were so many interesting varieties. If youre asian youve probably had the dry porksung, which they offer in ice cream form. They also have beer flavored ice cream, pork knuckle ice cream, and many other unique flavors. A definite must visit place if you want to try some exotic like ice cream flavors than the original and plain vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, etc.

Yelp
Snow King Ice cream, 雪王冰淇淋 is one of the coolest places in Taipei. Why? 1. They're a family-run business that have been successfully running since 1947. Back in those days their shop naturally wasn't located in Ximen, but it was the ol' pops pushing an ice cream cart around the city. Now they have a big, bright shop up a narrow staircase in Ximen. Service is amazing, and you're certain to be having a conversation with the heir of the ice cream-kingdom. 2. Since the beginning of their time they have constantly worked on their flavors, making them as authentic as possible. There is no artificial flavors, or additives. Often you'll see the label saying "chili-flavor", but you don't really catch any chili flavor. At Snow King this is not the case...it's burning hot! They have worked on the chili flavor for a long time, to always satisfy the pickiest customers wanting it spicier and spicier, and now it really is spicy! Now they have 73 flavors to choose from, some of them aren't always available, but most are. My favorites so far are chili and bourbon (20% alc.). Both have strong, powerful flavors, and are best when combines with a softer variant, e.g. chocolate/coconut/vanilla/matcha etc. If you're having chili you MUST have another flavor. 3. They buy ice cream by the bucket, scoop and offer delivery; which means if you find your favorite and simply cannot live without it, you can take it home with you! 4. It's cheap. A generous scoop varies at around 50-80 NT, depending on which ice cream you get. Alcohol-ones are naturally more expensive, but also oh-so-good! Enjoy!

Yelp
You have to climb the stairs up to the second floor where you can find a small shop with 73 flavors! Using only local fruits and products. You'll find the funkiest flavors, egg, pork floss, taro, sticky rice, basil, chilly pepper. For the adventurous I would recommend the chilly pepper and pork floss for extreme taste. Basil and taro are really good too. Very heavy taste. In terms of price you're around 70-150 NTD per scoop (quite a big one) What I like about the place is that the boss recommends which one to eat first (the order) so the taste doesn't get mix up too weirdly.

Yelp
Lives up to the hype. The American that I am, I had to refrain from ordering more than two scoops. Both flavors I tried (peanut and black sesame) were outstanding. Thankfully, they weren't too sweet.

Yelp
My friend living in Taipei brought me to this small, inventive ice cream shop. Yes, tourists visit it. But it has not been around almost 70 years because of tourists! I sometimes make my own ice cream, but I never imagined the flavors Snow King pioneers. In the USA, we are in an ice cream flavor renaissance, but Snow King is way, way ahead of the USA! The staff is nice and there is plenty of room to consume your frosty treasures. To get an idea - beef ice cream - they have it. But they also have the sweet ice creams you desire from childhood.

Yelp
2.5 stars. Cute, family-run ice cream shop that has been around for a while from what I understand. They serve up 70+ flavors, ranging from fruits to teas to savory. There is no sampling here and no mix and match of flavors. You pay per scoop, and depending on the flavor you choose, each scoop is a different price. Most flavors were between 90-130 TWD. We got one scoop of the custard apple (soursop) for 130 TWD, which is ridiculously steep for one small scoop. It sounds like they have doubled their price within a year. Also a note about Taiwanese ice creams compared to the US: the ice creams here are more like sorbets. There is very little, if any, cream used, so the taste is going to be different from what you would expect from an "ice cream". It's a little hard to find since it's just a store sign in the middle of an alley that leads you to a narrow staircase to go up to the second floor where the shop is. Plenty of seating inside. Friendly staff.

Yelp
Must eat in Taipei! I highly recommend for tourists or people who love gelato. I would say the texture is more like gelato than ice cream. Snow King Ice Cream features flavors made with local fruits and savory dishes such as braised pork knuckles, sesame oil chicken. Very interesting but I haven't get the courage to try though. Many years ago, the store was on the first floor with at least a hundred of flavor. Now it is on the second floor, with reduced but still extensive menu featuring the it flavors. As far as I remember, both taro and jasmine tea are pretty good. I had 釋迦 custard apple today. It is a little sweet for me simply because l prefer the pineapple custard apple. But it is very flavorful. You can tell the ingredient is fresh. It is basically a custard apple in gelato form. The staff is extremely friendly. English menu available. My favorite part is the lady who works there (maybe the owner?) would give you a brief intro about the ingredient and tell the story behind it. Such a wonderful touch.

Yelp
I was really disappointed with this place. For beginners it's very pricey and you can't try any flavor before you buy it. The ice cream is also mainly lightly flavored ice. The quality did not live up to the expectations or price at all. 7-11 ice cream is much better and enjoyable.

Yelp
Snow King is a must for visitors to Taipei. It is a small shop which offers truly unusual flavours. The shop was opened up 68 years ago by Mr Gou, who, judging by the menu, has a fantastic imagination. It's still a family run affair although Mr Gou is retired. There 73 different flavours, which included classic fruit (some seasonal), herbal teas, nut and taro flavours. However, the real surprise is the savoury flavours, which include Chilli, Gingli Chicken, Pork Knuckle and a wickedly zingy Wasabi flavour! They also have alcoholic flavours such as Taiwan Beer, Grape Wine and the local spirit Kaoliang. They also offer non-dairy options, and a menu is available in both English and Japanese. I like the coconut, passion fruit and Wasabi flavours. But I still have a lot to try! I strongly recommend checking this out, for it really is quite a unique dessert experience. It's not super cheap, but since they make it all themselves and it is so unusual I think that is fair enough.

Yelp
Ice cream shop running since 1947!! Has at least 50 flavors !!! Including pizza, basil, pork these kids of salty special tastes. 50TND/ball. Not very cheap but the materials are good. It use "real food" to make ice cream not artificial taste which you can really taste. I recommended fruit flavors like watermelon very good and also special that you can't have it anywhere. And "red bean" flavor is also very nice! If you're not dare to try those salty flavor but still want something special, Watermelon or red bean are good way to go ! They also sell ice cream in bucket! If you really love some flavor and want it home~ You can also buy a bucket home! It's 2800ml per bucket, so equal 28 balls in it And it cost 20 balls. So in a way cheaper. Must try place! And please tell me how is it if you tried the salty flavor hah.

Yelp
A cute shop with lots of ice cream flavors. My friends and I got the tea, mango, guava and papaya. (We weren't feeling too adventurous and didn't get their crazy flavors like basil and meat) You can tell they use fresh fruit in their ice cream. The ice cream was very creamy and not icy with full flavors. Come try.
