Find the Best Thai Take Out in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Soberfish is one of a couple of Thai restaurants that also serve sushi, beautifully presented in a sunny corner eatery in Minneapolis. Soberfish now has its own app for pick up orders, so that hankering for sriracha fried rice and spider rolls can be more easily satisfied." - Alex Lodner

Google
I’ve eaten here only four times but each time I have I’ve loved it. I always tell people to check it out if they’re looking for a new place with good sushi or Thai food.

Google
The lunch special options are a fantastic value here - daily until 3 p.m. - even on the weekends! The food is very high quality. I've tried several different rolls of sushi, the Tom Yum soup, and the Pad Thai here. The Pad Thai is perhaps the best I've ever tried anywhere. Service is friendly and the space has a cute contemporary feel to it. I highly recommend!

Google
We have dined here many times over the years and are never disappointed. It is always difficult to settle on what to have because everything is well prepared, fresh and delicious! The fresh spring rolls are a great starter and then a roll to share and then whatever else you decide will be more than enough!

Google
Went for lunch on a Monday afternoon. Promptly seated as it was slow. Offered water and menus. Ordered the lunch special of 2 for $14 with spicy salmon and the califorina roll, and we ordered another full order of the rainbow roll. The rainbow roll has great flavor and texture. The spicy salmon was Minnesota nice spice! And the California roll is just a classic. To have sushi this good for a fair price was definitely a treat on a Monday afternoon!

Google
Yummy stir fry that tasted like curry 😋 I wasn’t a fan of the bowl though because it spilled everywhere. The baked muscles, papaya salad, dumplings, and oysters were good. Personally thought the sushi rolls were decent but not my personal fav. Lastly the strawberry mimosa & mango mimosa was delicious & definitely hit!

Google
This restaurant offers a delightful selection of main entrees, and their customer service is top-notch. While the majority of their food items are amazing, it’s worth noting that their sushi menu is limited to just two non-raw options. As someone who doesn’t eat raw sushi, I found this aspect slightly disappointing. Other than that, this is such a wonderful place to go to.

I recently dined at a restaurant and was truly impressed by the exceptional service. The staff was attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to ensure a delightful dining experience. From the moment I entered, they made me feel welcomed and valued. They were knowledgeable about the menu, provided insightful recommendations, and catered to dietary preferences seamlessly. Throughout the meal, they checked in regularly to ensure everything was to my satisfaction. This level of service undoubtedly enhanced my overall enjoyment of the meal, and I can't wait to return for another wonderful experience.

Went on a date here and the food was phenomenal! I'm pretty sure I had the best green curry I have tasted so far in the US. The spring rolls were also amazing. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Soberfish has been a bit of hit or miss since I started going years ago. They used to have a decent happy hour but that changed a few years back and the offerings on the HH menu got smaller. I have not been back in a little while so not sure what it is now. The Pad Thai & the drinks are kind of what hooked me to Soberfish in the beginning. I've tried other dishes and appetizers and wasn't too moved by them. The staff aren't super friendly, there's very little interaction. It's all street parking but usually don't have issues finding a spot.

Yelp
An unfortunate set of events finds us here :-/ After spending hundreds of dollars and giving this restaurant numerous opportunities to make it right, I decided never to return due to one thing that is severely lacking: CONSISTENCY! The food can be delicious one day and mediocre the next: additionally, I have been overcharged on multiple occasions while simultaneously receiving incorrectly prepared entrees. We order the same three entrees and while mistakes happen, there is no logical excuse to explain the quality differences that occur so often at Soberfish. I cannot ignore how vehemently they protest when errors are pointed out. Please prepare for battle if ever you require a refund or price adjustment due to their actions or lack thereof. FINAL Thoughts: This place has the potential to be awesome if they correct a few fundamental flaws and focus on consistency as well as service. Choose Wisely Fellow Foodies! #LiveEatBeHappy

Yelp
Soberfish has delicious sushi and Thai food! I ordered the salmon roll and California roll and my boyfriend ordered pad Thai. They have two lunch species, both are $14 Thai lunch special: one Thai entree and soup or salad or an appetizer. Sushi lunch special: 2 sushi rolls. Service was great - it was quick and our waiter was friendly. They only have street parking, so parking can be difficult to find sometimes. Overall rating: 10/10

Yelp
We went out of our way to eat here since the breakfast place we originally wanted to eat had a long wait. Our server was super attentive and friendly. Service overall was great. My wife's cup of water had an imprint of the previous diner which was disturbing. Starting with the sushi, it was evident that attention to detail was lacking. The rice, a fundamental element of any sushi dish, was disappointingly hard, almost to the point of being unpalatable. To make matters worst, this error was repeated not once, but twice during our meal, suggesting a systemic issue in the kitchen's preparation process. Moving on to the fried rice, one would expect a comforting blend of flavors and textures. Instead, what awaited us was a dish plagued by the same hard and unyielding rice encountered in the sushi. Frying the already tough rice only served to exacerbate the issue, resulting in a dish that was difficult to chew and ultimately unsatisfying. The Pad Thai, often a highlight of Thai cuisine, fell flat in terms of flavor and execution. Instead of the harmonious balance of sweet, savory, and tangy flavors that define this dish, we were met with an overwhelming sweetness that drowned out any semblance of complexity. Furthermore, the choice of thick and chewy noodles only added to the dish's lackluster appeal. Overall, my dining experience at Soberfish was marred by subpar ingredients, lackluster execution, and a noticeable absence of flavor. It is my hope that the establishment takes heed of these shortcomings and endeavors to rectify them, lest they risk alienating discerning diners seeking a fusion restaurant. We left the table exactly how it was presented to us, paid and left. Waitress brought boxes for us but the dishes cannot be saved.

Yelp
I am a fan of Soberfish (which has a full bar for the record). Fresh ingredients, artfully prepared at a fair price. The service is consistently attentive. To top it off, the setting is charming. Never had a bad meal here. I should go more often and so should you!

Yelp
I always enjoy going to Soberfish! It has a good menu with something for everyone, and the happy hour pricing is great. Service can be a little hit or miss, especially depending on the time of day. Typically I'll come here for sushi because it's always fresh and tasty. Recently, though, I tried the drunk fish noodles and was pleasantly surprised! All of their noodle, curry, and rice dishes have the option to add tofu, mock duck, chicken, beef, pork, shrimp, or calamari. I like the options for customization! The portion size was generous for the cost. I'll definitely return to try other non-sushi items. They've got a rotating draft list that always includes some great local brews. The cocktails are reasonably priced as well. Parking can be a challenge, especially during the winter months. There's a small, shared lot behind the building that's usually full. Plan to park on the street and walk a block or two.

Yelp
Thai restaurant. The sushi was decent, like any normal sushi at other places. The noodles was a lot better, the flavors are within every bite. It's classified as spicy but wasn't that spicy. The service was brief and the servers were really nice. A lot of window for light to come through, very open space.

Yelp
Soberfish is a Thai and sushi spot that serves mainstream dishes but didn't wow me in any way. The oshinko maki ($5) is vegan by default and not bad but not particularly memorable. The kanpyo ($5) is vegan by default and fine but unremarkable. The W8 Chinese broccoli ($13) is vegan by default but really bland. It's a stir-fry in a bland, clear sauce that was piled on way too much. The vegetables were drowned and flavorless as a result. The W1 Thai holy basil ($13) is vegan by default and also flavorless. There's too much sauce and the the dish didn't really feel stir-fried. It was like they steamed the vegetables and then just poured the sauce on top. The service is friendly. It's a decent space. But if you're looking for better Thai food, go to Amazing Thailand in Minneapolis or Phi Chay in St. Paul. If you want better sushi, go to Kyatchi in Minneapolis.

Yelp
First time in the area and was very impressed with the food, service, and everything in between! Here's what we had: - Green curry with Tofu (10/10, made for nice leftovers the next morning) - Pineapple Curry with Chicken (perfect amount of sweet and savory) - Spinach curry with Peanut Oil and Tofu (delicious) - Pad Thai with beef (highly recommend, also great for leftovers) - free tempura fried ice cream for my best friends birthday (yummy of course) - Thai tea (VERY sweet) Our waitress was kind and helpful. She went out of her way to double check peanut contaminants for my friend who is allergic. Got seated right away and enjoyed the overall ambiance of the restaurant. I will definitely be returning!

Yelp
We've been here a few times, and each time the service was slow, even though the restaurant wasn't very busy. They have a good variety of food and drinks on the happy hour menu. The tuna tataki was delicious, the sushi was okay but fell apart easily, and the fried rice was really disappointing--super bland and not worth the price. Probably won't be coming back anytime soon.

Yelp
Food was amazing and service even better. I came here for HH and it was sooooo tasty and good. It's right in my neighborhood. Convenient location and intimate spot. Great restaurant for a date night or solo dining by the sushi bar. Come visit ASAP!!!

Yelp
The service was good. We went for the happy hour which was nice to see so many choices on the happy hour menu. We liked the spring rolls, and we ordered the broccoli tofu stir fry and the tofu sweet and sour. We thought the entrees were okay but we weren't crazy about them. My date had said he'd tried the pad Thai before and he didn't like it because of the flavor and so many green onions. The decor and ambiance was beautiful. Maybe I'd have to try more on the menu but personally I wouldn't really feel a desire to go back.

Yelp
Best Thai restaurant in the Twin Cities hands down. Great environment for dine-in and timely takeout service. All the food is good so you really can't go wrong but I typically get the green curry or rama spinach curry, and can't skip the Thai tea! So many vegetarian options and have never had bad service. If you live in Minneapolis and haven't been here, it's a must that you try it.

Yelp
Been here multiple times and it never fail to satisfied my taste bud. Before graduating from college this is a place that is close to my college ( Augsburg). Every time I come back here, the food just always taste so good. First time trying the green mussels and it was pretty good. I don't know what they put on top, but it was delicious. As for the wing, it would be great if the wing was actually well mix with the sauce, but it taste good. The wing are pretty big too! The drunken noodle was good, however i feel like there wasnt enough noodles, it had a lot of veggies. The last but not least, the fiery beef salad. That was so delicious I couldn't finish it . I had it spicy and it was pretty spicy, however it can be handle. The portion of the food was just right and the services was amazing! Overall, a place I would always come back to!

Yelp
Soberfish is a cheap entry to sushi and Thai. None of the food is great. But it is also isn't terrible. And the pricing is hard to beat for acceptable food. However, inconsistency can be a problem. I recently ordered fried rice spicy and it came out basically as white rice with some chicken. It was horribly done. I'm glad they exist when I want a cheap sushi option but they are definitely lacking compared to good sushi and Thai you can get elsewhere in the cities.
google avatar

Yelp
Came for lunch, got the papaya salad and the Panang curry - both were amazing! Don't skip the spice on the Papaya Salad, it adds so much to the flavor! Also the portion sizes are big, especially for the reasonable price point. You will leave with a full belly. Missed the opportunity to take a picture of the food because we ate it so fast. Great service, huge menu, nice ambiance.

Yelp
My Party of 8 met up recently @ Soberfish for Happy Hour @ 430pm. We ordered many apps, couple bottles of wine and tons of sushi. 1 hour and 10 minutes into sitting at the table, the server told us we had to leave and go sit at the bar because they needed the table for a reservation that was coming in @ 6pm. We had already ordered more sushi, which they put in a to go box and we cancelled the extra 2 bottles of wine. All 8 of us were very confused and had never been treated this poorly at this restaurant or anywhere really. We spent well over $200+ and to be treated like garbage made it a horrible experience. None of us will EVER be back and will be sure to spread the word on the HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SEVICE AT SOBERFISH. There are many other Sushi places to go check out in Minneapolis/St Paul. Please go check them out before going to this Sushi Dump.

Yelp
Wow, hidden gem! We stopped here on a whim because we were hungry and nothing else caught our eye. Unknowingly we arrived during happy hour. What a great happy hour menu! The chef's choice sushi plate was high quality and melted as soon as it hit my tongue. I really liked the spicy yellowtail, as it wasn't made of minced fish with spicy Mayo. It was chunks of fish with some sort of chili oil in it. The egg rolls were pretty meaty. All the dipping sauces were flavorful. They served Coke products, which is a plus in my book. The Seward Neighborhood is fortunate to have this place.

Yelp
Great neighborhood sushi bar. Great food, nice staff and friendly patrons. Come early and get happy hour prices.

Yelp
This place says it us open until Midnight in Friday's but we walked in at 8:45 pm and it was shutting down. Talking my about false advertisement. Freaking place us not even that good. And it smelled like someone took a crap in it. Maybe it was a good thing they refused service. Not recommended.

Yelp
We went on a Monday night, I've heard good things in the past so we were excited to try it. The restaurant was 2/3 empty. We started ordering drinks, they took about 20-30 mins to get to us, we ordered sushi at the same time and this took over and hour to get to us. We understood the industry is short staffed and tipped well regardless, I believe there was only once server in the restaurant and 2-3 sushi chefs. The sushi was good value and quality however, but do not come here if your hungry or in a hurry.

Yelp
Excellent happy hour! I was trying to find a sushi restaurant with a happy hour and Soberfish delivered! Overall everything was quite delicious for the price. Spicy salmon roll was a hit!

Yelp
Been here twice for happy hour and once for the lunch specials. We ordered different things every time and loved it all. Very fair prices, friendly service, and good vibes!

Yelp
Soberfish has been a favorite spot of ours since we first went! My BF always (and I mean always) gets the pineapple chicken curry. It's delicious and savory with a hint of sweetness from the pineapple! I love their tempura dinner! You get a small salad and miso soup to start. The main dish is the tempura! Shrimp, zucchini, mushroom, asparagus, onion, and sweet potato with a delicious dipping sauce. Yum! For dessert, I highly recommend the mango sticky rice if it's available. Delicious!

Yelp
I went during happy hour and felt that everything was fine. I ordered the dynamite roll, gyoza, and nigiri from the happy hour menu, and soberfish noodles. I wasn't particularly impressed by any of these items, particularly the dynamite roll (tasted very different from other dynamite rolls I've had). The nigiri was the best part. The service at Soberfish was great! Our waitress was very kind and made sure our water was always filled! Overall, I would recommend going during happy hour!

Yelp
The sashimi here is so good. I was actually surprised. My cousin took me here because it's her favorite sushi place. We ordered a variety of sashimi and two rolls. The sashimi 4/5. Hot Fire Roll 5/5. Soberlicious 3.5/5 I actually really enjoyed my lunch here. The food was great but it is on the pricier side. Most definitely be back one day.

Yelp
First, I'd like to say we had a great waitress! I believe her name was Becky? She was newer to the restaurant and still helped us out with no problems. The second part of my review is not as pleasant. The food was subpar and basic at best. I ordered the Garlic Wok with chicken and it came out soupy with no flavor. Don't get me wrong it smelled amazing! Then I took a bite and it was hard to distinguish what I was even eating. My partner ordered sushi, she was expecting freshness but it ended up tasting like grocery store level sushi. My bill was $50 and for what we ate... we will not be returning to this restaurant anytime soon. The place is lovely and small but what's the point of the food isn't good.
google avatar

Trina V.

Yelp
Soberfish has a great happy hour menu of apps, rolls, and drinks. They also are good with gluten-free accommodations if someone in your party has a gluten allergy or sensitivity. Although I have only gone for the sushi (which I would recommend coming during Happy Hour for), there is a large menu of different food items that would satisfy non-sushi people. They do have their own small lot to park in, but there is also lots of neighborhood parking depending on the day/time.

Yelp
Stopped by with a friend. I remembered that they had great Sunday deals. This is the old True Thai restaurant, on the corner, for those of you who cannot place where Soberfish is located, also across the street from Perkins Riverside They have a lunch menu, where you get an entree and an appetizer for $10 until 3pm, I think. Then their Happy hour starts. I had Red Curry and miso soup and then ordered a full size appetizer of the Sober wings (basically fried wings with no sauce). The wings were decent. I might go solely for their wings, but they had other good things to eat as well. I was pleased though and remember wanting to eat the last one that I was splitting with my friend. Decent wings. Service was nice, friendly, checked on us just enough to not be annoying or feel forgotten. She had the formula down right! Decor is nice & cozy. In the front area there is a fully loaded bar, about 1 booth, and 6 tables. Past the bar there are more tables, a fire place, and an overflow room or private room. In the sushi bar room there are about 4 or 5 booths and a couple tables and seats at the sushi bar.

Yelp
I like the food here, always come here with my family. The customer service isn't as good but still ok. Hard to find parking.

Thomas M.

Yelp
I only tried one dish, the pineapple curry, but it was excellent. I don't get over to this part of Minneapolis much anymore but will definitely have to go back at some point.

Yelp
Super good food! Parking is on street (as far as I could tell), but easy. The space is bigger than I expected, which included a bar. But the food!!!! Excellent sushi! And big portions!

Yelp
The Thom Yum soup with shrimp and veggie spring rolls were amazing. The service great. I recommend and will be back soon!

Yelp
Happy Hour on a Fridayyyyyy!! Pre-gaming before a comedy show. My 3 friends and I went to Soberfish around 5:30 on a Friday. The place was not quite busy at this time with many seating options throughout. Happy Hour ended at 6:00 so we had to make some quick decisions to get the deals. I was quite impressed with Soberfish's drink and food options on the menu. The discount is a few dollars off the original prices. I really enjoyed my vegetable egg rolls. I loved the crispy texture of the shell. It was quite oily but still tasty. I didn't really enjoy my vegetable pad Thai so I will try something different next time. My friend's sweet and sour chicken was different then what he expected. He still enjoyed the very colorful dish. The sushi and sake were delicious. Our server was attentive and friendly. I look forward to visiting Soberfish again in the near future!

Yelp
Good enough sushi quality.   But taken in the context of the highly competitive Japanese restaurant scene in the twin cities, I can't say this is any better than slightly above average.    Nice location near U of M campus. GOOD:   Fish quality is never bad here, and in any city other than Minneapolis would seem outstanding.   Nice appetizer menu, and good selection of standard Thai dishes.   Decent enough sake selection.   Nice dining room ambiance, halfway between neighborhood joint and casual romantic.    Best of all are the prices:  Some of the most reasonably priced sushi in the area. MEH:   On more than one occasion I've seen the sushi chefs ham it up with customers at great length.  Not only is this loud and distracting for diners, but it most definitely delays table service.   Sober Fish has the longest wait for sushi that I've seen in any twin cities area restaurant.     Sober Fish is a favorite among my friends, and I like bringing my wife here for date night when we have places to go in the area.   But otherwise, I don't think this place is really much beyond a local neighborhood destination.

Marisol M.

Yelp
Food is definitely delicious and worth the money !!! Workers there are super friendly. The atmosphere is super chill and cool. Love their lychee Martini!

Yelp
Never been inside, but I've ordered delivery/take out 3 or 4 times now. I'm so grateful that this place exists that I almost want to give it 5 stars, but it's really a straight down the middle 4 star place. I love that I can get a decent thai beef salad, some baked mussels and a couple sushi rolls from the same place. Some of the sushi rolls are not the best, and they seem to be lacking the more basic options, but all in all, it's about as good as sushi delivery gets here. I'm used to nyc where you can order sushi delivery from about 20 places at any time. It's the most common delivery item there, but I forgot that it's less common in the rest of the country :( Anyways! I'm sure I will be ordering from here many more Sundays. Keep up the noble work.

Yelp
Food was very good and nicely priced. I dined in because I wanted tempura which I wouldn't expect to travel well. Covid guidelines are enforced. Dine in lunch crowd was very sparse. I'll be back.

Yelp
Ordered delivery from soberfish for girl's night, through a third party app. I got the pineapple curry with chicken and vegetables. When vegetables was selected I was expecting other vegetables to be added but that was not the case. I was able to look past that because the pineapple curry with chicken was sweet and tangy and very delicious! Also, all the portions were large. My friend ordered the pad see ew and unfortunately it was nearly inedible for her because there was sooo much cracked black pepper it made it too spicy for her taste. This must have been a one off situation because she has ordered this dish from there before and has not had that happen. My cousin ordered the crunchy roll and it was well liked. Another friend ordered the patak seafood combination which they really liked and it looked really good but unfortunately I couldn't try it due to a scallop allergy. Regardless of the two mishaps I would order again due to taste and portion size.

Yelp
Thai food plus sushi? Yes please! My friend and I couldn't decide on what to get for dinner, she was really in a sushi-mood, and I was decidedly not. So Soberfish was the answer to our prayers. Our server was attentive, friendly, and helpful. Our drinks were delicious, and the food was even better. I like to try the same dish at all the Thai restaurants I go to, to compare and judge fairly, and Soberfish was definitely up there with the best.
google avatar

Gabi S.

Yelp
The food was spot on! Location and service were the only downsides. First thing we noticed upon walking in was the sign warning against common theft. Second, our server did not wear a mask when speaking with us, or at all really. Nobody else was in the restaurant at 3:30, so our food was quick and perfect. I would go again, hopefully when the restaurant was in a better appearance. It appeared to be deconstructed relatively, assumably from Covid. They had constant to go orders being picked up at 3:30, so I assume it's a neighborhood favorite! Again, we loved our rolls!
google avatar

Caitrin F.

Yelp
This review is for their takeout and does not include service/location/etc. so really only based on quality of takeout food. Also have never ordered sushi here so cannot speak to that. As for their Thai, SO GOOD. Get here, order, it eat, smile because you're friggin happy you did! Really love their papaya salad. It's spicy for sure but refreshing and well balanced. Red curry was very good and veggies included were delicious. Pad see ew overall good but would have enjoyed a bit more sauce. Drunken chicken wings were delish!! Can't wait to order here again.

Yelp
This is my go to local sushi restaurant. I usually only go out for sushi during happy hour, and this place has a great menu during it. Last time I went out I tried the oysters (always wanted to try oysters), but I gotta say I didn't like how these ones were served. I wanted a more simplistic serving and these ones came in a lot of the ponzu sauce and whatever other seasonings they used, therefore I didn't really taste the oyster itself, more so just the sauces. If you're like me then I'd recommend asking for a more "dry" serving of them. Also, they are pretty small servings (5 for $10 off appetizer menu).

Yelp
Awesome sushi and Thai food. Great ambiance, this place has become our go to sushi place.

Yelp
Pad Thai is so good! There noodles are their best option. Sushi is solid too. I come back often! Highly recommend!

Yelp
I had a nice little visit to Soberfish recently ordering a bunch of food off the menu to share with friends. We started with the spring rolls (gotta try the classics everywhere!), chicken satay, cream cheese wontons, and the sober wings. I was hoping to order the salmon head, but the rest of the table politely asked me not to; hopefully it will be on the menu the next time I come! The spring rolls and the dipping sauce were tasty and herbaceous; actually some of the best I've had in a while. The chicken satay itself was cooked and seasoned well, but the peanut dipping sauce and the cucumber vinegar were a little on basic/bland side. The cream cheese wontons were exactly what you'd expect, and the wings themselves were good, but the sauce was super runny that I actually had a problem with it. If you are going to do a basic salt and pepper seasoning, I feel like you should have a thicker sauce that actually sticks on the wings and this just seemed like dipping it in lightly flavored vinegar. If it were thicker I think I would have liked it! After apps we ordered some rolls and a curry to share. We decided on Massamun curry after the server indicated that was the customer favorite, hamachi, a caterpillar roll, mothra roll, a veggie roll, and a spicy tuna roll. The curry was rich and flavorful, but I was a bit disappointed in that even though the menu indicated that it was spicy, the serving we got was at like a 0. Spice level = ketchup. I would have liked a bit more heat and a bit more sourness/acidity to cut the heavy coconut milk. The rolls were on the good side of average (the fish seemed higher quality), but the actual star was the veggie roll! Those that had it stated that the soybean wrapper was super tasty and that it had a good mix of flavor. Overall the food was pretty good and was well priced. I think it's a great place to meet with friends and have a good time.

Yelp
I've been here twice now. The first time was for a private party and although I arrived a bit late after most orders were taken and wasn't hungry at the time, I never was once approached by the server if I ever wanted anything, I had been waiting to order a drink so I had to get someone's attention after awhile. Second visit: came during happy hour. Not that impressed. We ordered the shrimp tempura, eggrolls, 4 rolls, and the tempura ice cream. They use too much rice and too little fillings so you pretty much fill up on rice. We realized we only got TWO shrimp tempuras and the rest of the plate was filled with a bunch of carrot and onion tempura and it cost $7.00 on the hh price list, the shrimp size didn't even makeup for the price they are charging. What a rip off.

Yelp
Soberfish is a cool sushi and Thai place. The sushi is adequate and the Thai is on point but clearly secondary to St Paul's Ruam Mit. My curry was on point but my friend got a soup that totally sucked.
