Yelp
Considering how North Beach (and San Francisco for that matter) offer an infinite amount of Italian Trattoria's in a very small radius, trying to pinpoint exactly which place you wish to dine at on a Saturday evening can be a very daunting task. Those that know me already know that I ain't into those fancy chic places where you need to wear a $3000 suit, a $500 of Italian loafers, and a Rolex watch. I am way more into the old school mom-and-pop places. And after looking at dozens of Italian eateries, I finally settled on "Sodini's Green Valley Restaurant".
Located a block from Columbus Ave. in the heart of North Beach/Telegraph Hill, Sodini's lies directly on Green St. and adjacent to Grant Ave. This particular area is loaded with tourists, locals, and is a very popular destination. I do not advise attempting to park your car here which is why it's best to arrive by foot, Muni bus, or Uber/Lyft. I took the 45 Union Muni bus (from my hotel), made the quick 6 minute walk, and arrived during the late afternoon of Saturday 4/1/2023 at around 5:40pm. Since this place does not take reservations and considering it was dinner on a Saturday, I was a little concerned about wait times. However upon our arrival, the owner Mark was the one that greeted and seated us. And best of all, there was NO wait! Nice guy that made sure that the business was flowing smoothly.
The building itself has that rustic old school look and feel to it while being placed directly below a few apartments. They do offer limited outside dining but all the magic here is on the inside. Here you will find a full service bar and an endless amount of pictures focusing on past entertainers, local talent, and some of the history behind Sodini's. You can spot photographs of the great Frank Sinatra, the Rat Pack, and other well-known people past and present. As far as the decor, don't expect anything fancy about this place; here you will find distressed leather barstools and tables that look as if they're several decades old.
Since I already knew what I wanted prior to coming here, my choice was simple. This was none other than their "Linguini w/Clams" in a creamy white sauce complete with a side of garlic bread. I opted with their white house wine which is a perfect pairing that goes with the pasta and clams. My +1 ended up going with the "Linguini w/Meat Balls" in rich marinara sauce. Service was very attentive as our waiter made sure we were taken care of in a timely manner. There was a different waiter that made sure our waters were continuously getting refilled.
One interesting thing about the the staff/employees here is that they were all sporting t-shirts that resembled the early-2000's HBO show, "The Sopranos". However, this said "Sodini's" with a red gun pointed upwards. I must say that this place is lively but has that gritty old look to it, just what I enjoy. Our meals arrive rather quickly. I was quite impressed that there was about 10 clams on my dish complete with a spork to dig the clam out of the shell. Everything tasted above average while the texture of the pasta hit the spot. However, the side of bread was so small to a point where I was done in a couple of bites.
All in all, "Sodini's Restaurant" is a very good restaurant worth checking out. Just the nostalgia alone is worth a visit if you plan on checking out a piece of history in San Francisco. Is it the best Italian I've ever been to? No it is not. But it is very good and worth the money spent. With that said and done, I am giving Sodini's an above average 4-star Yelp review. Grazie! and Mangia!
