14 Excellent Old-School Italian Restaurants In SF

"Near the front door of this North Beach restaurant are the words “No reservations, no decaf, no dessert, no exceptions.” But what this longstanding spot does have are great pasta and small plates. Start with the zingy bruschetta that will make you sweat a little and then get the massive portion of seafood linguine to share—any other pasta dish is a safe bet too. The small dining room gets loud even at half capacity so ask for a seat in the parklet if you want to slurp in quiet." - julia chen 1, patrick wong

Sodini's Green Valley Restaurant - Review - North Beach - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The front window of Sodini’s Green Valley Restaurant in North Beach tells you immediately what it doesn’t have: “No decaf, no reservations, no desserts, and no exceptions.” But what the dinner-only Italian spot does have is solid pasta dishes served in huge portions. Prioritize the linguini seafood, a glossy tangle of noodles slicked in a tomato cream sauce and mixed with enough mussels, shrimp, and calamari to place them all on an endangered species list. If you have room, try any of the soft and squishy gnocchi, too. Just feel free to skip the pizzas, which tend to be soggy. Walking in is typically easy on weekdays—the dark dining room is tightly packed and loud, so if you require a place to slurp in quiet, ask for a seat on their covered parklet." - Patrick Wong

How Did Italian Food Become “Red Sauce”? | Bon Appétit

"An example of the Bohemian-era Italian-American restaurant in San Francisco, offering a soigné-but-informal vibe with red-and-white-checked tablecloths and straw-wrapped Chianti bottles; chefs there developed dishes that were unknown in Italy and adapted to American tastes by increasing meat portions and making Parmesan a common, lavish garnish." - ByPaul Freedman

Atmospheric and full of character — it reminds me of a 1970s film shot by Gordon Willis: underexposed, with deep shadows. A cavernous gathering place for families, with seating that’s cheek by jowl. Framed posters of the Rat Pack — Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and others — line the walls . I need to try a few more dishes before weighing in on the food, but we had the vegetarian pizza, and the crust had to work hard to make up for the curious absence of tomato sauce. I will try their pasta, soup and salad next time. A place worth coming back to.

Google
Solid spot! Extremely generous portions that will definitely leave you full, and very well made food! Came in on a Friday and had a 20 minute wait for 2 people, which is not bad by SF standards. Staff is extremely friendly! FYI no desserts served here but there's plenty of late night dessert spots in the area

Google
A lovely divey in all the best ways, old school Italian spot. Full of regulars, great food & the staff is so nice. We come often - I know there are so many Italian options in North Beach, but Sodini’s is among the best. Their house salad is one of the best I’ve ever had, and the minestrone is a little thick which makes it great for bread dipping. We started with a salad, which even split between the two of us was huge. Then the Lobster ravioli and the chicken Sodini. If they have the lobster ravioli, get them and thank me later. My favorite in the city. Portions are big - so come hungry or plan to share!

Google
I came here because a friend recommended me their gnocchi. Oh my gosh, it was so good. We also got the seafood pasta. The portion was very big for both plates. The server were very friendly and serve as well. They don’t serve any dessert and we luckily brought our own cake. They provide a fork to us. The environment is full of special decorations from the owner, and I love that they put a wedding picture of the owner in the restaurant. I will definitely come back again and try more food.

Google
We had to visit because its No reservations, Decafe or desert. But its yes on everything else. Only problem is the tables are too small for the food that is presented. Bring friends and share.

Google
LOVED this place! Immediately greeted at the door and assured us we were welcome. We asked what time they closed because we didn’t want to be ‘those people’ at the last minute. They stay open until 9:30 and it was about 8:15. The waitress came right over and helped us with our decision. I asked for guidance as I do like to know what a staff might recommend. I ordered the Seafood Fettuccine and my wife got the Gnocchi Pesto. This all happened in under 5 minutes. We weren’t in a rush, but after our experience next door, (see other review for other Italian place) this was a nice change. Our food came out and was perfect in presentation and flavor. It was excellent! Thank you Sodini’s for making our dinner great! Great service and atmosphere! We like when there are no TVs and we have a favorite place in Texas that is very similar to this type of atmosphere. Brat pack music playing in the background. Low lighting, etc. There is a reason they have been around since 1906. Tried and true. Great job!

Google
Sodini’s Trattoria is a place not to be missed if you are in San Francisco. The service, the atmosphere, but especially THE FOOD! OMG Delicious.

Google
I highly recommend this restaurant for excellent classic Italian dishes in a cozy dining room in North Beach. The service is excellent. We loved the Gnochi Gorgonzola, chicken picatta, seafood linguine, and tortellini carbonara. They have a good selection of Italian wines. We also enjoyed caprese and wonderful bread.

Yelp
So authentic! Love love love this place. Not updated at all ~ which is the best vibe ever. Cozy and inviting ambiance with feeling of the past. Decorated with white tablecloths, classic decor, and fun vintage-inspired art. Arrived late in evening as a party of 3 ~ zero wait time and lucked out with window table. Service was excellent and super friendly. And the food....was sooo good! All three of us enjoyed our meals. Food arrived quickly, as requested and warm. We could have sat there all night. Will be back for sure!

Yelp
I've tried this restaurant twice and both times I've been disappointed with the taste of the food. I've tried the tortellini carbonara and the cheese ravioli al pesto. My partner got the seafood linguine and he rated it 3/10. It was watery and flavorless. The kid got the pesto linguine with chicken and he didn't really eat it and he can EAT so we knew he didn't like it. All of the dishes were flavorless and we all had to add salt to make a feeble attempt at making it better. We asked for authentic Parmesan cheese instead of that Kraft powdered Parmesan cheese and they said they don't have any! They offered Asiago instead. What respectable Italian restaurant doesn't have Parmesan cheese? What are they putting in the Caesar salad?? Even Olive Garden has authentic Parmesan cheese freshly grated onto your plate! How can pesto be so flavorless when it has Basil and pine nuts? I didn't think it was possible! My partner said he could close his eyes and taste it and not know what it was! And he has been cooking elaborate meals since he was a teen at a restaurant. For a place established in 1906 and prices above $20 for basic pasta dishes you can easily make at home, I expected better quality of taste. SIX ravioli pieces with the plainest, most bland pesto for $25. An absolute rip off. Costco pesto has more flavor for crying out loud. This place was voted best Italian restaurant but that was probably 10-15 years ago, not now. I've even stayed in Italy for summer school and I can confidently say this didn't get close to authentic. I like that this place is pet friendly though and that there are crayons at the tables for kids to doodle on the paper tablecloths. Other than that, I will not be returning here for a third chance.

Yelp
It was my wife's birthday! We stumbled over this fine Gem. The food was great! I had the lasagna which I highly recommend. My wife had chicken Parmesan Lemon drop martini for myself! Wifey had a expresso martini Our server was Eddie, he was amazing Great experience, food and drinks! I highly recommend coming here Eddie is the best

Yelp
Decided to try this place out for the first time while walking by because many of my usual north beach restaurants had too long of a wait. I was very impressed. Very authentic. Very welcoming and attentive staff. I tried the tortelloni carbonara which was great, a tad salty but I liked it. My partner got a pizza and enjoyed it as well. They also provided complimentary bread which I was surprised because many restaurants in the city have stopped providing a complementary bread or similar option. I will come here again and recommend to friends.

Yelp
They have inside seating and a few outside tables too. I enjoyed all the food ordered. Service was good and nothing to complain about. Someone checked in with his frequently. It was nice to sit outside and people watch. This is a busy street in Little Italy in San Francisco. This must be a popular place because people kept going into the restaurant to ask about getting a table. I would come back.

Yelp
Service was a bit slow but the food was delicious and the place itself is very cute and lively

Yelp
Amazing ambiance, great service and for the most part, very good food. Hang at the bar with the very sullen bartender. You'll want to ask him his name but just say please and thank you. For food, some items are not as good as they could be. Skip the Caesar salad and the bread. DO have the clams and if you must, go ahead and dunk the amazing breathy wine/garlic sauce with bread. The clams are just fabulous. Do have some pasta if you still have room after the clams (LOL). They serve an occasional salmon special that's fairly good but I would stick with. a simple pasta dish. Va bene? Buon appetito!

Yelp
Sodini's Trattatoria is so delicious! It was wonderful to watch chef make his pizza crust. The salami and pepperoni pizza transported me to Italy. My gnocchi with meat sauce was the balance of creamy and tangy. The gnocchi was stuffed with ricotta and spinach and comes with a bit of garlic bread. I soaked up every drop!!!

Yelp
Carbs! Yaaaas! I needed some pasta the night before a trail race and wanted to eat it in the comfort of my hotel -- so headed online to see where I could order something for pick up quite quickly. Sodini's was a fantastic choice! Upon arrival, I received a friendly greeting. I ordered angel hair with marinara, a house salad and also received some tasty bread. This was the perfect pre-race meal. I'd love to go back for a proper dining experience in the future - chill vibe with friendly staff. Thanks for a great meal! 2024: 65/100

Yelp
I haven't been back for a while and the place was still really good. Love the old school Italian atmosphere. The bars is great, loved the bartender, super cool. The line moves pretty fast, plus you can hang at the bar while you wait. The staff moves fast, and the food comes quickly. The only issue, I tried to order the ribeye with pepper sauce and the waitress wasn't having it. I don't know why? I'd paid the different, maybe because the pepper steak came with pasta and the ribeye came with vegetables. Maybe if I order the ribeye with the pepper sauce on the side, she might have went for it.. who know, this it the kinda place you don't ask too many questions ;) We ordered: Bruschetta (Stars 3) It was very heavy on the garlic. It came with 6 large pieces enough for 3 to 4 people. It was just ok. Calamari (Stars 4) l love the 2 sauces, Lemon garlic aioli and cocktail sauce. The cocktail sauce was made fresh with plenty of horseradish. Loved the kick of the horseradish. The calamari was very large rings, no tentacles. They were good, but was sure if they were fresh. I loved the sauce so much gave it 4 stars, without the sauces, it would be a 3. Tortellini carbonara (Stars 5) The sauce was a non traditional carbonara, no egg yolk, mostly cream, but it was a really good cream sauce. Loved the added mushrooms and of coarse the traditional pancetta. Get some! Pepper Steak (4 Stars) I believe she said it was a New York, looked and tasted like one. The steak comes with a peppercorn sauce over the top, which was really good. They cooked it to order perfectly, medium rare. The side of pasta (3 Stars) was ok, I think I'd rather have the vegetables. It was watery, had to mix the sauce in, some extra cheese would have helped. But the steak was so good I didn't mind. Until next time... (hopefully not as long as the last time 2016, thanks yelp check-in... but a search function would be nice, I was scrolling for days!)

Yelp
I always order the gnocchi. Some of the best gnocchi I've ever had. It's stuffed with cheese and spinach. Good portions and pricing. Great area with ambiance.

Yelp
Really cute spot to go because of the old-school Italian vibe. Decent prices, huge portions, free bread, and a full bar. The food was ok, we got a Caesar salad and pesto linguine. The pesto was a little soupy but the salad was tasty. Prices were appropriate and the menu would have something for anyone. Overall the food wasn't anything outstanding but it's worth a visit for the old Italian vibes. Service was incredibly personable and the food came out fast.

Yelp
The food was delicious; the service was spectacular. My friend, who is a S.F. Firefighter, introduced me to this place about a year ago. Since then, I've been coming here at least twice a month. The quality and the taste of the food have been consistent. And, the service is always amazing. They're all friendly and attentive - and - really just genuinely amazing people who know how to provide excellent customer service and make you feel at home. I love this place because of the food and the people who work there. Thank you Sodini's :-)

Yelp
My family dined at the Green Valley restaurant for many years since the 1960's. I hadn't returned to Sodini's Green Valley restaurant in years but as soon as I walked in the door the memories came flooding back. In the heart of North Beach the Green Valley was established in 1906, in the early 1990's it was rebranded as Sodini's Green Valley. Our visit was during SF Fleet Week and the Italian Heritage Parade weekend. The bar and restaurant were buzzing, Mark the owner greeted us and added our name to the list. We were seated shortly, the old photographs of family added to the ambiance. As a starter we shared a House Salad, a generous portion perfectly dressed. For my main I had the Chicken Parmigiana. The chicken was served with linguine in a tomato sauce that was reminiscent of my Nonna's. "La vita e una combinazione di pasta e amore." Tante Grazie

Yelp
went here for dinner at 7:30 on a friday night with 2 other friends. no reservations so i was worried the wait would be crazy since its in the heart of north beach, but surprisingly when i went in i didn't have to wait more than 10 min i think! the owner wrote my name down and let me chill at the bar while waiting for my friends. the place is very cozy, im p sure i saw a lot of first dates happening. it was pricy but everything was so fresh!!! not huge into italian food but would def come back for the pesto gnocchi. it did take a while for our food to come...out but i didn't really mind because of how amazing the freshness and quality was. oh also there's free refillable bread came with the table too! but they'll come out cold and not warmed up tho so just beware !

Yelp
If you ask me, the award for best ambiance in SF definitely goes to Sodini's. Located in the heart of Little Italy, this restaurant has the perfect pairing of an incredible vintage vibe and the most delectable food. I ordered my usual: the Seafood Linguini. This dish is LOADED with seafood, so it's a pretty good deal. The service is stellar, and there are definitely some neighborhood regulars. Overall, a really nice vibe with yummy eats!
google avatar

Kate T.

Yelp
This seems to be a popular spot in the Little Italy district. We got seated right away on a Saturday night even though the restaurant looked relatively busy. We had the Angel Hair Pasta with marinara sauce and a side of meatballs; and bruschetta and the gnocchi in gorgonzola and mushroom sauce. The bruschetta was crispy and the tomatoes were fresh. Both the meatballs and the Angel Hair Pasta were so-so. But the gnocchi was absolutely fantastic! The sauce was super yummy and the gnocchi themselves were like little stuffed pillows. I would come back just for that next time!

Yelp
Ah, the Sodoni's Green Valley in SF--a place where culinary wonders meet the delightful haze of a fabulous night out. Picture this: a Caesar salad that could make Julius himself reconsider his empire, and a risotto so creamy it felt like a warm hug. The pasta with veal? Let's just say it danced on the taste buds as elegantly as Fred Astaire. And then there was the steak, cooked to perfection, leaving us in a blissful food coma. Of course, no feast would be complete without a glass (or three) of their good wine, which paired perfectly with our laughter-filled evening. Even through the lens of our slightly tipsy state, the dining experience was a memorable one, with flavors that stood out and an atmosphere that encouraged nothing but joy. If you're looking for a place to dine fabulously and perhaps a little tipsily, Sodoni's Green Valley might just be your next stop. Cheers to good food and even better company!

Yelp
Really disappointed with our experience at Sodini's. Unfortunately, we were completely ignored for an hour and had to leave without receiving any service whatsoever. When we walked in, we were placed at the bar but we asked to move to a table when one became available. They eventually moved us to a cute location at the front (taking our sodas from the bar with us), and then the staff proceeded to ignore us for 45 minutes. We asked one of the attendants who assured us service was on the way, but while we waited another couple sat down at the table next to us, had their order taken, and received bread and drinks all before any wait staff spoke to us. After several attempts to politely get the attention of a staff member, we realized we were not going to get served (it had now been a hour since arriving) and we got up to leave. We passed several staff members on the way out, and none checked in or asked why we were leaving. Unfortunately, if this is how Sodini's family dining treats their patrons, then thank god we weren't born into their family. 0/5 stars -- worst service we've received in the Bay.
google avatar

Katie R.

Yelp
Sodinis has my heart! Staff is the BEST! You feel like you're in someone's home and the food is comforting and classic Italian. Love that you don't need a reservation.

Keith B.

Yelp
North Beach is a place I have never visited. Not to mention this fantastic eatery. I had a great time there when my girlfriend took me there. The staff was outstanding and the service was first-rate. However, the cuisine! Oh my goodness, the food was delicious. I will definitely return.
google avatar

Yelp
The gnocchi was really good and cooked so well - so soft and squishy. The pizza was pretty good but definitely a thicker pizza. The spot itself was such a vibe and had great character. The staff was decent and we felt taken care of!
google avatar

Wella S.

Yelp
The food was tasty and flavorful. The waiters and waitresses were so nice! The restaurant is dimly lit and there are lots of photos and pictures of Frank Sinatra. There are a lot of decorations, but it is often noisy.

Yelp
Waited for dinner AFTER appetizers and wine for over 45 minutes with no communication whatsoever. Our server just disappeared. We sat at same time as table next to us that had same appetizer and entrees and headcount. They finished and left while we waited for our entrees. Isn't it restaurant 101 to let your tables know what's going on? Asked the manager what was going on and if we'd been forgotten. His response was that they never forget about anyone. Wrong! Waited another 10 minutes. Assumed he would take care of it after our inquiry. Still no one came to our table. Finally went back and talked to mgr again. This time he said they got backed up and wine was on them. Really??? That's your lame response to patrons being ignored by server and you! Ridiculous! You guys suck. Saturday night dinner ruined. You guys suck!
google avatar

Yelp
Great local place. We ordered the tortellini carbonara and chicken parmigiana and we couldn't stop eating both they were so good! The chicken parm also came with a great side salad. We were both too full by the end to eat dessert which was a bummer. I ordered a gin martini for a drink and it was perfect too

Yelp
Considering how North Beach (and San Francisco for that matter) offer an infinite amount of Italian Trattoria's in a very small radius, trying to pinpoint exactly which place you wish to dine at on a Saturday evening can be a very daunting task. Those that know me already know that I ain't into those fancy chic places where you need to wear a $3000 suit, a $500 of Italian loafers, and a Rolex watch. I am way more into the old school mom-and-pop places. And after looking at dozens of Italian eateries, I finally settled on "Sodini's Green Valley Restaurant". Located a block from Columbus Ave. in the heart of North Beach/Telegraph Hill, Sodini's lies directly on Green St. and adjacent to Grant Ave. This particular area is loaded with tourists, locals, and is a very popular destination. I do not advise attempting to park your car here which is why it's best to arrive by foot, Muni bus, or Uber/Lyft. I took the 45 Union Muni bus (from my hotel), made the quick 6 minute walk, and arrived during the late afternoon of Saturday 4/1/2023 at around 5:40pm. Since this place does not take reservations and considering it was dinner on a Saturday, I was a little concerned about wait times. However upon our arrival, the owner Mark was the one that greeted and seated us. And best of all, there was NO wait! Nice guy that made sure that the business was flowing smoothly. The building itself has that rustic old school look and feel to it while being placed directly below a few apartments. They do offer limited outside dining but all the magic here is on the inside. Here you will find a full service bar and an endless amount of pictures focusing on past entertainers, local talent, and some of the history behind Sodini's. You can spot photographs of the great Frank Sinatra, the Rat Pack, and other well-known people past and present. As far as the decor, don't expect anything fancy about this place; here you will find distressed leather barstools and tables that look as if they're several decades old. Since I already knew what I wanted prior to coming here, my choice was simple. This was none other than their "Linguini w/Clams" in a creamy white sauce complete with a side of garlic bread. I opted with their white house wine which is a perfect pairing that goes with the pasta and clams. My +1 ended up going with the "Linguini w/Meat Balls" in rich marinara sauce. Service was very attentive as our waiter made sure we were taken care of in a timely manner. There was a different waiter that made sure our waters were continuously getting refilled. One interesting thing about the the staff/employees here is that they were all sporting t-shirts that resembled the early-2000's HBO show, "The Sopranos". However, this said "Sodini's" with a red gun pointed upwards. I must say that this place is lively but has that gritty old look to it, just what I enjoy. Our meals arrive rather quickly. I was quite impressed that there was about 10 clams on my dish complete with a spork to dig the clam out of the shell. Everything tasted above average while the texture of the pasta hit the spot. However, the side of bread was so small to a point where I was done in a couple of bites. All in all, "Sodini's Restaurant" is a very good restaurant worth checking out. Just the nostalgia alone is worth a visit if you plan on checking out a piece of history in San Francisco. Is it the best Italian I've ever been to? No it is not. But it is very good and worth the money spent. With that said and done, I am giving Sodini's an above average 4-star Yelp review. Grazie! and Mangia!

Yelp
Located on a very busy street. We were a party of 6 and ordered a variety of dishes. I had a gnocchi, others had lamb and steak. The portions were very generous and it is a task to complete one on your own. Lamb was possibly the pick of the dishes. Very few restaurants source it locally and often opt for cheaper imported options. They source it locally and the taste is a testament. Gnocchi was also very tasty.

Yelp
Outstanding veal and cannelloni. Great food and service. Well priced wine and adult beverages

Yelp
My husband and I decided to visit little Italy for dinner before we went home. We asked the nearby cafe where they would suggest to get gnocchi and he immediately suggested Sodini's, he also offered a place with more bells/whistles but he said he visits Sodini's multiple times a month so I said that sounds like the exact kind of place we want to go. When we got there, there was a line before they opened. The nice couple said they've come every Saturday for the last 10+ years and has tried everything on the menu. The owner was so sweet when we entered and it definitely feels like a neighborhood restaurant. We got the minestrone, tortellini al pesto, gnocchi Gorgonzola. Everything was delicious, however the gnocchi was absolutely amazing. Every bite was a blast of flavor due to being stuffed with spinach and ricotta. I will definitely get it next time instead of the tortellini. The tortellini was good with a nice flavor, definitely all made fresh, but I think I'll always think about that gnocchi until I have it again. The waitress didn't offer the specials of the day, however she was still very nice. The bathrooms are clean and the outside seating have these adorable grape lights hanging. I told my husband we need to come back once a month because it was delicious.

Yelp
You could tell by its freshness that the pasta was made in the restaurant. However, whoever was cooking in the kitchen did not do justice by overcooking the pasty. It came out mushy. The pesto and tomato sauces were a bit watered down, or perhaps just needed a bit more flavor. I expected more from the pizza in an Italian restaurant. It was only meh.

Gabriella G.

Yelp
Worst. Service. Ever. Which is so hard to say because their food is so so so on point. We sat outside and waited over 40 minutes for our food with ZERO communication from anyone. We checked at about 30 minutes to make sure they hadn't forgotten us since we were outside and were told "they don't forget anyone" but then 15 minutes later the bus boy told us they had just fired the food. So unfortunate.

Yelp
I was greeted with a hearty and healthy hello! Served a tasty mocktail within 3 minutes. Once my friends arrived, we were guided to a table where we were served in a polite/timely fashion. The food...on a scale of one to 10, 6. The minestrone soup was delicious, and the Caesar salad was good, too. Sondonis definitely worth a return visit.
google avatar

Satyam D.

Yelp
Great freshly cooked Italian food that looks as good as it tastes! My favorite was the clams pizza but everything else was not extraordinarily good or different which is the point. However, I feel their menu offers way more than necessary for their personal brand. I saw a pepperoni pizza, garlic steak fries along with traditional Italian dishes. It also showed a creamy sauce pasta as an option and alongside it has a carbonara which is presented as "creamy sauce pasta with pancetta". This is not how I'd expect an authentic carbonara to be described in the menu. It's no big deal but the menu definitely makes this restaurant feel less authentic than it is. The atmosphere is beautiful with old school Italian American figures and artworks on the walls and a vintage classic vibe. Divy and casual style. The server spoke very little and wasn't able to help very much with the ordering. There was some confusion with one of the dishes which was taken back after serving and served to some other table, which was odd. But other than that, it was a great time enjoying Italian food in a casual setting.
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
We waited until we were starving to go get dinner. Big mistake because everywhere had long wait times. Luckily, we found this gem and only waited about 5 minutes before we were seated. We opted to sit outside because the inside wait was longer than we wanted. It didn't really make a difference to us since there were heaters. My husband and I started with the caesar salad and then shared the margherita pizza. The food was really good and I'm shocked there wasn't a wait. I liked how casual this restaurant is while still serving great food. From what I could tell, it seems like they have a lot of regulars because the person that greeted us at the door was greeting some parties by name and I think that speaks for itself.

Yelp
Old school, always consistent and makes you feel welcome. Bartenders are friendly and I could crush the chicken parm for all meals of the day!

Yelp
Nice interior. Super nice staff. Got seated quickly without reservations. Everyone seemed to know each other. Food was reasonably priced. And best of all, the food was out of this planet (ravioli alla casa).

Yelp
Sodinis is owned by Mark Sodini a high school buddy of mine. His family bought it in the 1980s and the original owner started the restaurant back in the 1930s. If you want bowls of minestrone soup, family style, pizza on a platter, every pasta on earth and completely authentic true Italian North Beach food this is the place. They also have a full stocked bar that has some of the best wine selection I've ever seen at a bar in San Francisco. If you're trying to pick a restaurant in North Beach just go here you will not regret it. There's also outside seating!

Yelp
To be honest, we were trying to go to another place nearby for dinner the other day and the wait was 45 minutes. This place had no wait so in we went! We sat right in the window and got to people (and dog) watch so that was fun. The tables are covered in paper and crayons were on the table so my husband doodled while we waited for dinner :) Service was a little slow but the staff was nice. Before the meal, they did bring out bread and butter and there's olive oil and balsamic vinegar on the table already. For dinner, I ordered linguine with clams and mussels and my husband got the chicken parm. My seafood was a little on the fishy side - I've definitely had better, but the consistency was good and I liked the pasta sauce. My husband said the parm was the flattest (i.e. widest) cutlet he had ever seen and he enjoyed his meal too, though he couldn't finish it. Overall had a nice experience and we enjoyed our food. Bathrooms are NOT nice though. Grimy, more like a dive bar. Maybe wait until you get to another spot.

Yelp
Found this spot thru multiple positive yelp reviews and we were not disappointed. It's off the beaten path of the main congestion filled touristy streets. The venue is clearly a locals spot it's homey and authentic. We shared a Caesar salad I had the Gorgonzola gnocchi and hubs had the linguine with meatballs. I loved the gnocchi perfectly light and pillowy. No wait time, we were seated right away. The staff continued to check-in without being overbearing and the owner thanked us for coming.

Yelp
They are delicious! I first came here on Christmas eve few years ago, and I recently visited again. The carbonara and the marinara pasta were so good and the pasta was perfectly cooked. Drawing on the tables was such a great way to wait for the food and a very unique thing to remember the restaurant

Yelp
Some of the best pasta in Little Italy, the portions are plentiful and shareable. I had the gnocchi and they texture was amazing. The white sauce with mushroom went well and a glass of red wine. Staff is attentive and checking in on you. Great atmosphere and ambiance for date night or dinner with friends. They also have a full bar with food menu available as well if you don't want to wait for a table. Selection of Italian wines is decent but a little bit of everything to go with any dish.

Yelp
My girlfriends and I found this place and loved it so much we came back twice this summer! The meat-filled tortellini and the Sodini sauce (think a slightly lighter Alfredo sauce) were the highlights. Low-lit, traditional Italian restaurant ambiance. Staff is super friendly and house wine is only $8 a glass!

Yelp
This OG spot is one of my favorite in North Beach. You'll get authentic Italian food with a warm and welcoming vibe. The staff are super accommodating and the portions are huge. Sit at the bar or get a table in the packed but cozy space.

Yelp
Service was extremely slow. Food was just ok. We asked if the pasta was fresh made & we're told all pasta was made fresh in house, which was obviously a lie. I ordered chicken parm which was nice & thin but between the sauce & cheese on top was completely soggy instead of a nice breaded cutlet. The linguine it came with was obviously boxed pasta & the sauce was pretty bland. House salad was ok, nothing special. Their Italian bread was very good. Portions are good size. I wouldn't bother to go back.

Yelp
A cozy, old school italian restaurant and bar in the north beach area. Truly some of the best gnocchi i've ever had! 10/10 and would always recommend the caesar salad.

Yelp
Sodini's is always a good place to visit in North Beach. It's a small cozy place that's been in business over 100 years. Not that many places I know with that nostalgia. The service is good and so is the food. I wish they took reservations it that's okay. Getting there earlier is better if you can. My only negative feedback is the 4% service charge if you pay by credit card.

Yelp
I've been eating here about 20 years and I think I'm done. The food and service have both gone slowly down hill while prices have soared. The owner is sort of a noisy drunk who laughs and screams profanities from the bar. The staff work hard. The food is Chef-Boy-Ar-Dee quality for the most part. Terribly cooked noodles with basic sauces. Mushy tasteless meatballs. Tomato sauce with no flavor at all. The wine is undrinkable - truly appalling. It's like they are storing it next to the oven or something. Before I forget, we ate there about a year ago and a couple next to us, with whom we had been chatting, left without finishing their bottle of (terrible) wine. I asked the waitress if we can finish and she agreed, whilst clearing their table. The bill came with a charge for two more glasses of wine. So basically, Sodini's sold that wine twice. Nice job.

Yelp
Amazing spot. This is one of my favorite places in North Beach. The chicken parm and sodini linguini are amazing. Same goes with the calamari! I think what separates this Italian restaurant from the others in North Beach is the service and ambience. Both unbeatable.
