Best Los Angeles Restaurants for Takeout and Delivery, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Los Feliz sushi spot Sogo Roll Bar has expanded with a second location along a busy stretch of York Boulevard in Highland Park, growing its takeout and delivery reach further east. The restaurant is a partnership between David Gibbs and Kiminobu Saito, founders of the renowned Valley sushi restaurant Sushi Note, and Sarah Dietz and Dustin Lancaster, industry veterans behind Los Angeles bars including Bar Covell, L&E Oyster Bar, and Real Charmer. The menu features roll sets with fish options such as snapper, yellowtail, and salmon. Starters include spicy tuna crispy rice, black cod, salmon sashimi, and baked crab crispy rice. Donburi topped with a choice of raw fish like salmon or albacore, black cod, or cucumber and avocado. Sogo has its delivery set-up figured out, with well-organized takeout boxes and fresh fish that can stand up to delivery. Order takeout or delivery directly through Sogo Roll Bar." - Rebecca Roland

Sushi Restaurant Sogo Roll Bar Opens Its Second Location in Highland Park | Eater LA

"Opening June 4 at 5535 York Boulevard in Highland Park, this hand-roll–focused sushi bar is an expansion of the Los Feliz original from partners David Gibbs and Kiminobu Saito (of Sushi Note) and Sarah Dietz and Dustin Lancaster (of Bar Covell, L&E Oyster Bar, and Real Charmer). It debuts the same menu of hand and cut rolls, donburi, and starters — including cucumber salad — with roll sets featuring fish like snapper, yellowtail, and salmon; shareable starters such as spicy tuna crispy rice, black cod, salmon sashimi, and baked crab crispy rice; larger donburis topped with salmon, albacore, black cod, or cucumber and avocado; and individual rolls like toro, spicy tuna, and unagi. The Highland Park location places a bigger emphasis on its drinks program (sakes categorized as “light and refreshing,” “savory and interesting,” and “fruity and funky”), along with wine, beer, and nonalcoholic options, aiming to be both a drinking-and-snack destination and a spot for full meals. The two-month renovation of the former Holcomb space includes green Japanese stucco walls, maroon heron-print Gucci wallpaper, lighting by Simon St. James of New Made LA, custom earth-tone serveware from Ellery Stoneware, a long wooden bar, a handful of tables, and a street-facing patio ideal for sake and snacks. Most roll sets sit around the $30 range to encourage regular visits, and the opening brings an all-day sushi option to a neighborhood with few Japanese restaurants; hours are Monday–Thursday 12:00–9:00 and Friday–Saturday 12:00–10:00." - Rebecca Roland

Loved my visit to Sogo Roll Bar! The interior decor is clean, modern, and inviting—perfect spot to relax. Justin gave great recommendations and top-notch service throughout. The vibe was calm with chill music playing in the background, making the experience even better. The hand rolls were excellent—especially the snapper and yellowtail, super fresh and flavorful. And the spicy tuna crispy rice is a must-try—crispy, spicy, and addictive. Will definitely be coming back!

Google
Excellent hand rolls at a reasonable price. Lovely new neighborhood spot serving up sushi and donburi bowls. Black cod bowl was very tasty. Salmon sashimi appetizer was enough for two people. Hand rolls can also be cut into 4 pieces for easier sharing. Albacore Kari Kari was my favorite. Large menu of sake. Sushi bar is comfortable and there is also seating outside. In the same spot as the old Holcomb's wine bar. Service was speedy and everyone was friendly. Will be back.

Google
I love this place! It used to be a wine bar before they took over and I would come with my dog to sip a glass of wine on the patio. Happy to report I can still do that and eat some delicious food as well. Currently their patio has limited food offerings (just starters & rice bowls) but hopefully they’ll be able to serve their full menu outside too once they’re more settled. Just keep that in mind if you’re coming with a dog! The crispy rice, and donburi are amazing. And the service is so friendly and kind. So happy they’re in the neighborhood.

Google
Sogo serves up delicious fairly modern sushi. Beautiful lush newly remodeled space-- everything is cool dark green and light wood. Our waitress served us impeccably. Things were a bit chaotic behind the bar, but they've only been open a week and I'm sure their efficiency will improve. Highlights were the scallop roll and the cucumber avocado roll, which was surprisingly flavorful. Their ponzu sauce is the star of the show!

Google
The hype is deserved! Unpretentious, very delicious, cozy and welcoming. Quality and freshness of fish in the rolls excellent with great flavor pairings. A really nice take on crispy rice with baked crab. We sat at the center of the bar giving us a great vantage point to observe the whole space. The staff are not only joyfully delightful to the customers, especially attentive to single diners, but to each other which says a lot about an establishment as a whole. Will definitely be back.

Google
Found this place on a whim, while my kids and I were looking to have lunch. Juliette was our server and she was lovely, inviting, and was very intuitive of what my kids might like. All our food was super fresh, came in a timely manner, and service was 👌🏽. Restaurant is relatively small compared to others, but it was perfect. Bathrooms were pristine, which says a lot about most restaurants and gives insight to how their BOH is. 100000/10 recommend.

Google
Such a great spot. The staff was incredibly welcoming from the moment we walked in: warm, attentive, but never overbearing. Special thanks to Danny, the GM, who made us feel like regulars from the start. He brings such a genuine, generous energy to the space; it really sets the tone. The sushi was fresh and beautifully prepared, and you can tell they really care about the quality of ingredients. Everything felt thoughtful but unpretentious. Great vibes, great food; I'll ’ll definitely be back.

Google
I had to get my sushi fix for lunch today and the three roll option hit the spot. The freshness and quality of the seafood was top tier and the miso soup is not to be slept on. So glad that we have a new, high quality neighborhood spot.

Yelp
Sogo Roll Bar is such a gem in Highland Park. The space strikes that perfect balance between modern and inviting -- clean lines, warm green and light wood tones, and an overall calm, comfortable vibe. Service was excellent from start to finish. Katie was incredibly welcoming and attentive without being overbearing, and the sushi chef was friendly and clearly passionate about the craft. Every dish we ordered was beautifully executed -- from the Mixed Donburi rice bowl to the Lobster hand roll. The fish was pristine -- fresh, ocean-clean, and perfectly balanced in flavor and texture. Nothing tasted overly dressed or heavy, just high-quality ingredients prepared with care. What we ordered: * Mixed Sakana Donburi -- $25 * Three Roll Set (snapper, salmon & spicy tuna) -- $23 * Crab Oshizushi -- $9 (happy hour price) * Scallop Roll -- $9 * Lobster Roll -- $11 Sogo delivers the kind of refined yet approachable sushi experience that's hard to find. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Stopped here for a little pre-dinner snack moment at 4:30pm on a Wednesday. We were the only ones inside and opted to sit at the bar. Love the decor inside - great silverware and cool decorations and trinkets! Since we were the only ones inside, we were tended to immediately. We ordered 2 hand rolls and 2 cut rolls. The fish we ordered in these rolls were: snapper, toro, albacore, and yellowtail. The quality of the fish was great, and the fusion of sauces and fish was great. The standout was the snapper, which had yuzu and lemon undertones. I will say though - since they make the rolls quickly in front of you, the craftsmanship isn't particularly outstanding - the hand rolls were on the messier side to eat, with the seaweed unraveling at times. Overall satisfied with my quick bite here. Interested in trying their other items like their donburi options!

Yelp
A week later I found myself back at this place because I had the craves for it. This will be a short update to my prior review as that was in depth. Today I went straight for the five roll combo and substituted the yellowtail roll for the unagi roll since I didn't have one of those yet. I love unagi but this roll appeared sauceless. I asked if it came with eel sauce after I ate it and they said yes but I could always ask for more. Noted because it was very lacking in sauce. Another new roll today in my combo was the spicy tuna. Let me preface this by saying I've never been a spicy tuna fan. I'm still not. It's just not for me. Nothing wrong with the troll, I'm just not partial to spicy tuna. As a side note, to me, it was pretty spicy and I had to cleanse my palate so I ordered salmon sashimi to finish off my meal. The salmon sashimi was perfect and the pieces were buttery and generous. Lastly, I had a Yuzu lemonade as I wanted something other than a Coke. This was my first time trying such a drink and I enjoyed how it paired with the rolls. This is not a sweet lemonade so if you're looking for sweetness, this won't satisfy you.

Yelp
Hmm, something about Sogo did not click with me as I hoped it would. It was a kind of a rough little drive prior to eating here. At first, I thought it was just because I was in a bit of a mini social conflict with my partner BUT the more I tried remembering this meal... The more I realized how a bit forgettable it actually was. Maybe it was a little too much soy sauce dipping or maybe it just did not satiate my sushi craving but all in all, service also did not leave much of an impression. Unfortunately, we were also eating up at the bar. They were just opening and we might've been the first ones in. Perhaps they were still only getting started and the rest of the day turned out much better for the customers. I've gone to just a few hand rolls places and I think the extra citrus flavor in the soy sauce did not appeal to my tastebuds. I know it's crazy but the soy sauce as KazuNori is much tastier in comparison. The hand rolls were plump BUT there I also didn't get a refreshing crisp bite I feel like I've gotten from other spots (not just the one I listed a sentence ago.) The mixture of shades of green and the accent of art was very appealing and drawing to the eye. However, the service could've felt a little warmer. Whoever was taking our orders felt colder in her service but again, if it was out of the energy she might've picked up from a conflict that her customers might have just had-- I understand and would give their service another try.

Yelp
Sōgo Roll Bar is a fantastic addition to the Highland Park food scene--especially for those around York Blvd. Known for their well-crafted hand rolls, it's an intimate yet unpretentious spot with serious flavor. My buddy and I sat at the bar--he ordered à la carte while I went with the 4 Roll Set (swapping Snapper for Albacore Kari Kari on Justin's recommendation). Each roll arrived quickly, with crisp seaweed and bold, fresh bites. We came in during a lull between lunch and dinner and got exceptional, attentive service. Sōgo proves small plates can deliver big satisfaction. A great neighborhood hangout--and even better, it's walkable. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
3.5 stars, but rounding up to four due to excellent service and beautiful ambiance. Sogo Roll Bar is a new addition to Highland Park, this is their second location (first one in Los Feliz, as they told me!) I'd never been to the first location so this was my very first experience with them. // FOOD // - 3/5 stars I ordered a set of 4 handrolls - and they let me swap out the snapper for the toro which was nice. The rolls varied in taste/quality... but one thing they had in common was the lackluster seaweed holding together the rolls. I'm not sure if it's the brand or because it's a little stale, but I had a pretty hard time being able to take bites out of the handrolls (had to kind of pull at the rolls to get the bites down). Seaweed is a pretty big component of handrolls! - salmon & spicy tuna handroll both rated (4/5): was my favorite!! the salmon was fresh and the roll tasted very good. spicy tuna was pretty yummy too - yellowfish handroll (3.5/5) was good! seemed also a little less buttery compared to most yellowtail I've had - toro handroll (2.5/5): possibly the most disappointing roll unfortunately. the fish did not taste very toro-like, it wasn't very buttery as toro usually is. and the color was a little darker and didn't seem very bright. not sure if that's an indicator of how fresh it is, but the taste was definitely subpar. // AMBIANCE // - 5/5 stars Ambiance was spectacular. It was newly decorated, the bar seating was really cute, albeit the stools felt a bit too far from the bar so I kind of had to lean forward a bit. Probably doesn't help because I'm a shortie though! // SERVICE // - 5 stars Super friendly service. The ambiance and the fantastic service fully convinced me they deserved the rounding up to 4 stars. However, I hope they take some time to look into the quality of their handrolls, would love to come back and support this new location!

Yelp
Overpriced and under performing. I was excited for a higher end sushi restaurant to open up and walking distance from my home. I've given this place two chances in both times left me feeling very underwhelmed. I've had their hand roll sets during my dine in experience and they were OK. I then on a later date ordered the Sakana donburi with salmon and an unagi roll. My total was roughly 37.50 after taxes, not including tip. They charge a separate 10% fee for takeout (on top of LA ~10% tax). Again, I was severely underwhelmed and I feel like I overpaid for. The quality of the fish isn't anything to brave about and the amount of food they provide is very lackluster. I am definitely going to eat something else after this. As you could see from my photo, they provide very little. For about $40 I would hope to be full. My Donburi seem to have about two scoops of chopped salmon, a couple slices of cucumber, a sprinkle of sprouts and seaweed, and way too much ginger. There was a huge glob of ginger, then small chopped ginger underneath the salmon and it came with another small container of ginger. That was an insane amount of ginger and I'm not sure if they were hoping it would be a filler because they just are going to provide you with so little. Overall, I don't think I'll be returning here even though it is so convenient for me. I am very disappointed. The only thing I can say is that the interior is very beautiful.

Yelp
Sōgo recently opened their second location in the spot where Holcomb used to be. The space is quaint & cozy and the décor is charming. Founded by esteemed Sushi Chef Kiminobu Saito, Sōgo places an emphasis on serving high quality hand rolls that are the perfect bite size treats. Rolls are available a la carte or they offer a set menu of pre-selected handrolls - 3 ($20), 4 ($24), 5 ($50), & 6 ($36), which is convenient. Donburi is available as well, in addition to staples such as Edamame, Cucumber Salad, & Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice. I ordered a Spicy Tuna Roll & Albacore Kari Kari Roll. The Spicy Tuna contained Kewpie Mayo, Ponzu, Chili Oil, Scallion, & Masago. The Albacore Kari Kari had a Garlic Ginger Ponzu, Brandy, & Crispy Onions. The rice was moist, and the fish was fresh. I enjoyed the interesting flavor combinations and uniqueness of each one. I'm looking forward to going back and trying other menu options. *Street Parking *Sake, Beer, & Wine

Yelp
Surprisingly kid friendly! I brought my 2 yo twins with me. Staff was super accommodating and attentive. They even brought crayons and coloring place mat. The space is small but nicely appointed and comfortable. They do have booths against the wall and a bar. It's only beer and wine but they do have a wide selection of sake. Fish was very fresh and lots of rolls to choose from. It's a great addition to HP.

Yelp
I sat at the bar area, prompt and friendly service. Cute place, great for meet up with a friend after work or a low key date. Fresh rolls, good assortment, not an overwhelming menu, (tapas vibe) a solid local spot, good sake and drink options, nothing bad to say , not loud, no loud party atmosphere just very chill vibes and solid food and drink. It is what it is, expectations met, not that I had big ones, it served and delivered.

Yelp
This place only serves rolls and the best experience is at the sushi bar where they make them right before your eyes and place them in front of you. There are sets. 3/4/5 rolls. Depending how hungry you are you can decide on more or less. The rice was perfectly warm and the nori was perfectly crispy. We enjoyed all the rolls and also ordered a cucumber salad appetizer. Everything was delicious. Welcome to highland park Sogo! See you again soon!

Ellie K.

Yelp
Pretty solid. The rolls were super fresh and the baked crab was nicely baked with just the right amount of char. Wait staff was nice; provided coloring sheets and crayons for the kids. And if your kids don't eat fish, they can do rice and shredded seaweed. Was a hit with them. Parking is on the street. Was easy to get when we went around 12:30 on a Saturday.

Yelp
Recently visited the restaurant with a friend and we had a great experience. I have never been before, but appreciated the server graciously walking us through the menu and suggesting a wine. The baked crab with crispy rice was sublime. I'll definitely return when in the area.

Yelp
LOVE THIS PLACE!!!! Better for twosomes vs groups so you can sit at the bar and get the freshest experience. Service is great, super friendly! The food is super fresh - totally recommend.

Yelp
Tried it again and really enjoyed it. I realized instead of standard handrolls these were a bit more like Ala cart "special" handrolls

Yelp
I've been to (one too) many hand roll bars and Sōgo Roll Bar is - hands down - the best spot in town. - LOVE the staff's easy-but-super-pro vibe. - The decor is trendy but welcoming - seats are super comfy, too. - The food is AH-MAZING!!! My faves so far (I haven't tried everything on the menu.., yet) are: Baked crab crispy rice, lobster roll, albacore roll, scallop roll. HOT TIPS: - If you order a set, you can ask to swap out one roll. I swapped out the spicy tuna with the lobster roll from +$2 (I think) - Dinner wait times can get pretty intense (there's a small patio where you can wait and order drinks tho) but we went here for lunch today and we got seated right away. So happy to have discovered Sōgo!!!!!!!

Yelp
Definitely a new favorite. Some of the best rolls in LA, definitely the best in the area. The place is very pretty and the service is impeccable. Katie was so so so nice to us:)) We got 8 different rolls and ALL of them were absolutely delicious.

Yelp
Bruh. This place is so dope. I'm about that hand roll experience and this works for me. Especially on the block!

Yelp
Sōgo Roll Bar makes hand rolls feel like luxury collectibles. Each one arrives with perfect precision. The staff serve them quickly so the seaweed stays crisp and the bite feels electric. The spicy tuna roll is flawless. The charred black cod on cucumber slices makes you forget about every sad office lunch you ever ate. Even the simple salmon roll tastes like it went to college abroad. It is intimate and trendy but not snobby. Sōgo Roll Bar is proof that small plates can carry very big energy.

Linda V.

Yelp
It was delicious. Service was quick and friendly. Ambience was chill with moody lighting, small space but they utilized it well.

Arsen G.

Yelp
This place sucks. I couldn't find a decent bite. Flavors are off. I'll never come back I'm just confused about the 5 star reviews. Yunomi and Kazunori are far better for a similar concept / hand roll bar Prices are also quite higher than the other two spots, 6 hand roll set is $10+ more but you're paying for a lesser product. Doesn't make sense. I wouldn't mind the price difference if the food was decent.
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
Really nice staff! Loved the cucumber salad and sake options. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
This is a great local spot for hand rolls, we would def come back- the staff was friendly and the vibe was breeezy laid back Japanese bar. Having been too a lot of Japanese bars/restaurants-- The only feedback is the hand roll price isn't the cheapest (comparing against kazunori) and the seaweed can be a bit crisper-- would recommend the chef/cook cover the seaweed and toast as needed since we noticed the seaweed ate pretty chewy since it sat out. Otherwise the food, service overall was pretty decent. Would def come back on occasion.

Yelp
A little packed. A little too pricey. Good food and good addition to neighborhood. Would it kill you to have some sashimi and sushi?! Rolls are fine. Bar is beautiful. Service is fine. Some items have an unusual sauce--in a good way. Basics can be delicious, try the Edamame. I found the cucumber salad a little too pickled and salty, but you may like it.

Yelp
Let's start off with noting that I wasn't feeling feel on my visit to Sogo. First things first, the service was great. The receipt said our server was KB B. She was pleasantly attentive. I would say she was a borderline mind reader. Her timing for checking in wasn't aggressive. She perfectly timed the breaks in the party's conversation to avoid interruptions. There was someone behind the bar that noticed a tinge of my dissatisfaction and quickly asked if there was something I needed. We sat at the bar. I was intrigued with the displayed pitchers, glasses, the painted mirrors, etc. In addition to the design of the establishment, it was the employees that set the feel for ambiance. Wonderful experience. The cucumbers were the start. Cucumbers were heavy on the vinegar for my taste. I only ordered two handrolls, scallop and snapper. They accommodated the light on rice request. While I enjoyed both fishes, the seaweed did not hold the crunch. The handrolls were immediately brought to the customers so I found it strange that the crunch was gone. Crunch = very important. The service and ambiance would bring me back in hopes that the seaweed for the handrolls stay crunchy. If not but the service is the same, I'd still go back, maybe I'll switch from handrolls to the bowls.

Tanai A.

Yelp
Stopped by Sogo on a Thursday night at the recommendation of a coworker. It's very cute and cozy inside. My server Katie was very accommodating and thoroughly went over the hand rolls. I tried the black cod and a four roll set, everything was excellent and I'm very impressed by the quality of the food for this price. I will be back soon!

Yelp
I am a big fan of Sogo in Silverlake, so I was real excited to try the new location. They managed to capture the same great ambience, food, and wonderful service as the Silverlake location. If you haven't been, definitely get the crispy rice and the albacore.

Nuria Z.

Yelp
Overpriced! Donburi bowl was the best part. But even that wasn't that special. I've had better. Rolls were small portions and not very flavorful. Sake was served in the tiniest of glasses. Ambiance was nice and quiet but again nothing to brag about. Service was good but a bit slow. I paid more here for 2 people than what I paid elsewhere a week later for 5 people at another sushi place nearby. Feels like ripoff. Sorry to say hope this place does not last.

Natalia A.

Yelp
The prices are different online than in person. The food was pretty good but not worth the price. The ambience is nice. Would maybe come back for a happy hour but wouldn't come back again for dinner.
