Soil

"Soil occupies a delightful house with a romantic patio-terrace, in the shade of leafy orange trees in the Pangrati district, a stone’s throw from the famous Panathenaic stadium – the venue for the first Olympic Games of the modern era. Here, chef Tasos Mantis (co-owner along with Alexandros Mouridis, who runs the front of house), creates contemporary seasonal cuisine featuring classic techniques, a solid basis in Greek cooking and a Nordic touch. This is showcased on a menu of well-presented small plates that reaffirm the restaurant’s “farm to table” concept, with a special focus on vegetables, herbs and edible flowers from the chef’s kitchen garden in Alepochori (cultivated by his father). At the end of the experience, guests are even given a bouquet of the herbs used in their meal." - Michelin Inspector

Athens : our selection of restaurants with terraces and views

"Soil, from garden to plateNear the Panathenaic Stadium, the trendy Pangrati neighbourhood is a mine of top-notch restaurants. Opened in 2021, Soil is housed in a magnificent 1920s building with a neo-Classical façade and ironwork features. On entering the premises, the first thing you see is the kitchen, where the team can be glimpsed in action : it is an introduction that speaks volumes about the spirit of the place. The interior of the restaurant is most welcoming with its small, intimate spaces decorated with works of art ; however, in the summer months it is above all the terrace that sets the tone, when tables are laid out in a superb courtyard garden dotted with orange and lemon trees. The local, sustainable and zero-waste food is the work of chef Tasos Mantis, who has worked, most notably, at Hof Van Cleve in Belgium. He maintains that "simplicity is the peak of elegance", but that doesn't mean that subtle and original flavours are off the table. After all, he finds his inspiration primarily in the restaurant's extensive kitchen garden, which he likes to tend, before using the vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers in his cooking. A cook, for sure, but also a gardener ! The single tasting menu (with a vegetarian or vegan option) changes almost daily according to what is ripe and ready to harvest. The wine list features some fine options and a balance between labels from Greece and abroad." - MICHELIN Guide

We decided to treat ourselves to a Michelin starred restaurant during our stay in Athens and were not disappointed! The service was very attentive and the dishes were served at a good pace. The plating was beautifully done with care and the food itself was outstanding. Absolutely recommended for a special night out!

Whenever we travel, my husband and I peruse the Michelin Guide to see what each city has to offer. After reviewing Athens’ list and doing some research, I could tell Soil was special. I booked the Chef’s Table Experience and we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. From the time we rang the bell at the front door, we were treated like family and well cared for. We had 17 courses and did not do the wine pairing but we were able to choose our own wine within 200 euro. They gave us the offer of tasting the pairing options on top of our wine. Another guest at the table (6 seats total) had a beer pairing which was an awesome touch. Typically, with a tasting menu, there are 1 or more dishes that do not quite work or suit me. We did not have one bad dish. Each had a special touch and story and many of the ingredients came from Soil’s garden. Chef is very passionate about his craft. We went to another Michelin restaurant the previous night and they were different aesthetics and concepts but Soil was by far the winner. If you enjoy a culinary experience, please do not miss this one.

Soil truly embodies its name—outstanding experience definitely worthy of its Michelin status! I did the tasting menu and what stood out to me were the little details and personal touch—the chef meeting you on your way in and out, seeing fresh ingredients from the chef’s family farm, the little booklet of herbs you got to take home. The presentation and flavors were a 10/10. Even a humble tomato was elevated to perfection with watermelon-chili sorbet and a fresh sprig of basil you got to rub in your palms to soak up the experience. The shrimp with marigold and citrus was another standout. And both the pear and strawberry desserts were delicious. I loved the cute patio. We were visited by some Persian cats and even a kitten!

We had an unforgettable dinner at Soil. Our group of six was treated to a masterfully designed 12-courses, where every dish felt like a work of art. The level of care and precision in each plate was matched only by the friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming staff, which made the entire experience feel effortless and inviting. From the moment we sat down until the final bite, everything flowed so well. Soil isn’t just a normal dinner, it’s an experience. We’ll definitely return the next time we’re in Athens.

Loved every moment of the dining experience. They definitely left simplicity at the door and leaned into the fun creativity that makes food such a perfect storytelling platform. Every bit was pretty special and the presentation elevated that experience even more.

Beautiful experience in the heart of Athens. Menu was rich, the wine was amazing (suggested by the them) and you could feel the “soil”, products of Mother Earth. I would prefer less fish but is definitely worth trying. Unique dishes, and variety of desserts. Jerusalem artichoke was my favourite. Congrats to the team!

One of the best Michelin one star restaurants I've been to. Impeccable service that is extremely attentive but not overly. Amazing food, each new dish became my new "favorite" of the night. The garden and atmosphere is also lovely and peaceful. Furthermore they handled allergies (gluten free, though not celiac) seamlessly.

Review: Soil Restaurant, Athens – A Michelin-Star Experience with Mixed Service I recently dined at Soil, a one-Michelin-star restaurant in Athens, and it was a memorable experience—though not without its contradictions. To start with the highlights: the food was truly outstanding—creative, flavorful, and beautifully presented. I chose the 14-course tasting menu along with two cocktails, and every dish was a pleasure. The menu felt thoughtful and refined, offering a genuinely impressive culinary journey. The space itself is intimate, elegant, and relaxed, with a warm, cozy ambiance perfect for a fine dining experience. Even though I came alone, I was well attended to by 2–3 staff members throughout the evening, and most of the team was both professional and detail-oriented. A special mention goes to the female server with short hair and piercings—she was warm, attentive, and highly engaged. She explained each dish with care, answered questions with enthusiasm, and made the experience feel personal and welcoming. That said, the service wasn’t consistent across the board. One tall, bearded male staff member stood out for the wrong reasons. While he offered engaging and detailed explanations to other tables, with me he merely listed the ingredients with little effort to connect. His cold and distant demeanor detracted from the overall hospitality and made the interaction feel awkward and impersonal. Another drawback was the pacing of the meal—the dishes arrived far too quickly and continuously, without allowing time to pause, breathe, or fully savor each course. It felt rushed rather than well-paced. One more thing to note: there were quite a lot of mosquitoes in the dining area, which was distracting and uncomfortable at times—especially for such a high-end environment. Finally, when I thanked the staff on my way out, no one acknowledged it—a small gesture that was surprisingly absent, leaving the evening on a flat note. In summary, Soil impresses with its cuisine and aesthetic, but the overall hospitality felt uneven. Some staff were exceptional, while others lacked warmth and attentiveness. A remarkable culinary experience, but one that could be greatly improved with more consistent service and attention to guest comfort.
