The 15 Best Breweries In LA

"Open since late 2023, Solarc is one of the newer breweries in LA—and one of the most unique, too. Rather than a typical line-up of IPAs and lagers, this Glassell Park brewery specializes in gruit, a medieval style of beer made with bittering agents other than hops. At Solarc, that means beer flavored with things like wormwood, black tea, and turmeric, and fermented with wild yeasts collected around Los Angeles. The whole operation is bordering on being a Portlandia sketch, but there’s no denying that hanging for a few hours in their quirky, colorful space (the walls are literally covered in aluminum foil) is a great way to spend a Sunday. " - brant cox, sylvio martins, nikko duren, garrett snyder

Google
Cool small local spot, beers were ok but not really my style. Does not mean the beers are bad just not appealing to my taste pallet. I love the music and vibes tho 🙏🏾 very chill, zen type ambiance.

Kat Weeks

Google
Vibes were immaculate, love the uniquely local aspects of the beer and that they had plenty of NA options too. Can’t wait to visit again.

Cailyn May

Google
One of the friendliest and most interesting breweries around! The beer is super local, with native plants or sourdough from the bakery next door, and goes beyond IPAs. It’s also great that they serve tea and kombucha. Very special place!

Joseph Horlacher

Google
Very cutesy brewery/cafe with tin foil covering nearly everything! Very chill vibes, good for working or reading. I only had the IPA but it was tasty. The folks working were also very friendly and welcoming!

Google
Awesome new spot! We did a flight and every single beer we tried was good! Personal rankings, 1. Bubs Bier (hits hard on the first sip 2. Glasselllager 3. Otherworld (the one I would sip on all day) 4. The Eyes. Highly recommend checking the place out!

Robert Garcia

Google
Spot has a ton of potential but the beer selection is not great. Music and vibes can be way better if I’m being honest. Just opened, hopefully they improve their beer selection and their playlist. Also their menu is really hard to read.

Google
This spot is a true neighborhood gem! The workers are incredibly kind and engaging, always welcoming me with a smile and genuine interest in my day. The environment is cozy and inviting, making it a perfect place to relax. They are also extremely knowledgeable about their beer and go above and beyond to ensure you've tasted their selection. If you're in the area, you have to stop by. I can't say enough good things about this place.

Mark Carotenuto

Google
Cool place, unique beers and didn’t enjoy 4/5 of ‘em

Yelp
The last brewery I visited on my California trip. What a great way to end it! Cozy space. Walls covered in aluminum foil. It's a vibe that's amazing. The brewer used to be a musician and you can feel that fun energy! The beers are very different. Funky, fun, unique. I ordered two of the beers: Bubs Bier: tart at first. Butterscotch after taste. Glassellager: lager with stage Absolutely loved everything and everyone was so nice!

Yelp
Solarc Brewing is one of the weirdest, most fun places around. If you're into unique beers, good vibes, and places with actual personality, this spot should be at the top of your list. The beers are creative. I had a sour with a super refreshing coffee twist, and their smoky lapsung beer is next-level -- rich, bold, and just the right amount of adventurous. They're always coming up with new, small-batch flavors, so it's perfect if you like to mix things up and try something you've never had before. The staff? Honestly, some of the friendliest people ever. They're happy to talk about what they're brewing, give you suggestions, or just chat about random stuff. You can tell they genuinely love what they do, and that energy makes a huge difference. Then there's the decor. It's like someone raided a thrift store, a sci-fi set, and an art gallery all at once -- and somehow, it totally works. Funky lamps, mismatched chairs, weird art, tin foil... Lots of live music, like a space jazz band. The perfect soundtrack to a night of interesting beer and good company. personalities

Yelp
(Drank/Snacked 09/07/24 SA @ 5:00pm and two more times after that): So... a lark of a brewery in Glassell Park! A friend told me about Solarc Brewing as she dined at a nearby restaurant. As of this review, they just celebrated their 1-year anniversary, which surprised me because I had no idea how they flew underneath my beer radar since I lived relatively close by. Without further ado, were things brewing solar hot at this "new" kid in town!? ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE I felt like I was in the mind of a conspiracy theorist who wrapped himself from head-to-toe in aluminum foil https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=0&select=2FhWmGCzEPalcqAvLnyajQ so the martians wouldn't read his thoughts! A roomie space that had odds-and-end chairs/tables. OVERALL Solarc Brewing was a kooky oddball experience with a limited selection https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=O96IP10oXkuqU9AN-SxjiQ of beers, intriguing music, and a hodgepodge of characters (think Burning Man)... and I kind of liked it. The beers were fine albeit very experimental (I felt like a guinea pig!), the prices were a tad high, and the service was fine. They also had nightly events. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $82.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS

Yelp
Such a fun brewery to experience! They have a few events going on through week days like live music and Art Nights where supplies are provided to draw and mingle. The decor is very fun, the walls are covered with foil and interesting art. The beer itself definitely has an acquired taste. I really enjoy they are a little floral. I appreciate that they also have teas they brew on the menu. Give them a try!

Yelp
Everything about this place is an acquired taste, haha. A friend wanted to meet up on a Sunday night and this was what we found. Outside it had these huge doors that look like a modern mosaic, then you walk inside and everything is covered in foil; very alien-like vibes. Nicely unexpected. The place itself seemed to have plenty of seating options, so we chose a seat close to the door. I will say, the seats were not very comfortable. We stayed for 1 beer and my body was hurting. Like those old elementary school wood chairs. We examined the menu but the drink selection was very small. They had a few choices for beer and tea options. Yes, tea. Their beers, served in mason jars (also not a fan of), all had floral undertones which was new and unexpected but definitely hit or miss depending on your taste preference. I wasn't too big of a fan of the beers personally, but again, depends on your palette. They had a few snack options like chips and candy. They also had these cool looking candles on all the tables. Reminiscent of the type of things we'd aim to create in ceramics class back in high school, haha. I saw photos of this place during the day and the windows/doors look so colorful and pretty. So I do think it's a different vibe depending on whether you go during the day or night. Would I come back? I'm not sure. I think that if you want to be adventurous and try something different or just explore, this would be a good spot. But if I was organizing something or meeting a group of friends, the menu is too limited to assume that there's something for everyone (in a bigger group).

Janna B.

Yelp
Vibes are great and so are the drinks! The foil covered walls and chandeliers don't do it any favors though. I'm sure the natural brick underneath has plenty of character to keep the vibes warm without making it feel weirdly cheap.

Yelp
To be honest the colorful windows/doors is what attracted me to stop here. I'm always driving by it. Today, I passed by it with one of my cousins & we decided to try it on a whim. When we first walked in we noticed the walls covered in aluminum foil, totally random, but rather unique. Very limited choices of beer, but also tea as well. Maybe next time I'll try some tea! Beers of choice today were the Bub's Bier & Glasselllager. Bub's Bier was sour, very tart. Glasselllager was my favorite of the two. Light, refreshing, and tasty. I love Hefs so this remind me of one. It's such a chill spot, I'd probably stop by again to grab another brew. I'm sure come summer time a Glasselllager will be needed on a nice summer evening! Do try if you haven't!

Yelp
Sitting among the colorful, foil wrapped walls, drinking tea and beer on wooden stools, is refreshingly relaxing for a Tuesday night. On this night, the musical offerings were a freeform style jazz group. Chill & funky joint that we'd come back to when next out this way.

Yelp
Loved our experience here and I think it's definitely worth checking out. The ambiance alone is pretty awesome--tinfoil lined walls, unique music in the background and antiques scattered about in various places. The beer was really yummy too! I got the flight so I could try all of them. The IPA was probably my favorite, as well as the Modelo inspired beer they have. They also had an Earl Grey tea beer that was really unique--you could actually taste the earl grey in the beer. We had our toddler and baby with us--wouldn't recommend kiddos to tag along with you if you can help it, unless you bring plenty of things with you to keep them busy. Cool spot overall and I would definitely suggest stopping by!

Yelp
The ambiance here was a quiet, peaceful environment. They play unique sounds for their playlist and the walls are covered up in foil. Gives a cool space-like vibe. Overall, people were not very loud in general, and spotted someone next to me reading a book. Not a crowded spot for sure. Parking can be found on side streets and the main street. Mostly an indoor location to hang out at. I arrived on a Sunday afternoon, however, I did not realize that they were closing soon.( didn't expect it either) Glad I ended up picking their flight so that I can at least taste their selection. Unique tasting beers for sure! First time trying Gruit-beer flavors! My favorite out of the batch was the one called " Otherworld" in which it has a delightful taste of "rose-esque" light crispy beer. Definitely an acquired taste to their unique flavorful selections. They have clean unisex gender restroom with cool lights! (had to take a selfie, of course) I recommend a visit to this unique brewery if you happen to be in town, around eagle rock, LA make a quick stop to quench your thirst with one of these unique beer selections. Food- I didn't any trucks outside and I did not get a chance to ask if they offer snacks, etc. Maybe next time... Found their hours on the website: current hours ~~~ thur 2-10 fri 12-10 sat 12-10 sun 12-5 mon 12-10
google avatar

Matthew M.

Yelp
Meow Wolf vibes with unique tasting beers without hops, what more could you ask for? Friendly staff, fun beers, and unique decorations. Definitely worth taking your out of town friends to this spot. Tried a flight, all unique brews. Pizza truck outside or BYOB. Cool venue, mostly indoors. Overall it's worth a unique stop!

Yelp
Cutie place. Great place to hang with friends and catch up. It's a great chill vibe. I would love to host a friends paint and sip here even

Yelp
Solarc Brewing really feels like it belongs in another city -- Santa Fe immediately comes to mind. Maybe Marfa. In a city where arguably the most successful brewery right now is the one founded by a former marketing executive that seems to make sales solely on its kitschy beer names and colorful can labels (because their beers are absolute crap), Solarc is the opposite, aggressively lo-fi and low-key, devoted to making their hard-to-find niche brews for a small-but-devoted fanbase. Most of what they brew are gruits, beers flavored with herb mixtures in place of hops. Gruits were what brewers historically made before settling on hops, which have strongly antimicrobial properties that are superior for preserving beer. Solarc is continuing an ancient tradition, and their products are very unique -- and may be an acquired taste. The brewery in Glassell Park definitely has a hippie, art school, "crunchy" vibe to it. The walls are covered completely with aluminum foil, for example: Neither the government, the aliens, nor the government aliens will be reading your mind in here. Pours are served in varying sizes of Mason jars. For those not wanting to tipple, various teas are available. Even the brews I thought didn't work for me were still interesting: A sour made from bread from Bub and Grandma's next door had a definite flavor of the bread, reminding me of a super-charged kvass. One that did work (quite well) was a gruit with a bright red berry flavor of a rosé wine, the sort of thing I could see Westside trophy wives drinking by the liter with their giant salads. Solarc is unique to the city's brewery scene, and it's one of the few places that feels like it has heart. As more and more places chase after those IPA dollars or crank out the lowest common denominator, Solarc has remained true to their vision. The last local brewery making gruits like them (Dry River) folded up a few year back, so I'm hoping Solarc sticks around. Los Angeles' brewing scene sorely needs them.

Yelp
Another new brewery in the area. Came here to try it and out and my beer was unique. They had a small menu, which I hope they expand on. My beer was unique but good. I loved the foil covered walls, that was also unique. So, I'd like to come back in a few months once they get into their groove. And by then I hope they have stickers.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
Love this brewery since it opened, John is so cool and Archie! Parking can be found on the street and side streets. I love Dunes and eyes . Cool, space sounds coming from the back. All of there beers are fantastic, you can get pizza from a pizza truck three doors down and they will bring it in for you. Super chill vibe
google avatar

Otto S.

Yelp
Monday nights are freaking LIT! This is the spot for the vibes. Dump a Gatorade keg filled with fizzy tea all over my body and lock me in the psychedelic bathroom. Boom. LFG.
google avatar

Christine O.

Yelp
This place is so cool!! We happened in after lunch next door and loved it. The beer is unique and an excellent selection. We played a board game, sipped beer, and had a lovely early afternoon. We'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Vladimir T.

Yelp
This place is all about gruits, the OG ingredients in beer before hops took over the scene. The Solarc brewers are like culinary wizards of beer, so if you're expecting regular IPAs, you're totally missing the point. In a sea of beer mediocrity, Solarc is pressing the envelop with creativity. You can tell the brewers are passionate about what they do, and are really happy to share their creations with others. Very cool place, very cool vibe and worth checking out.
google avatar

Tosh B.

Yelp
I never had this type of beer, and Solar is beautifully curated with all exquisite taste and practice. I tried their beer sampler which is my recommendation if you are new here. The snack food is great with mostly Asian tastes. The Sesweed treats were excellent. A totally great experience.

Yelp
Stained glass doors and a good beer tasting menu (as recommended by the person behind the counter) to boot. It was a good day

Michael K.

Yelp
Very pleased that you can get a 4oz pour. Beers are tasty. Not too crowded, nice vibe.

Michael M.

Yelp
Been a fan of Solarc's beers since before they opened this spot. Ever since they opened their doors it is more than just a brewery with excellent beers it is a place for community. Everyone who works here are really chill. They host really great events from music nights, movie nights, craft nights, solstice and eclipse parties. Solarc is more than just a place to get beer and tea. Also, pre-order a sandwich from bubs next door and eat and drink at solarc. That is the move during the week. They also have a great selection of NA beverages and Teas for folks who aint trying to catch a buzz (big fan of the fuzzy herbal tea). The other notable thing is various sizes of pours, 4oz, 8oz, and 16oz is a nice option to have.

Emily R.

Yelp
This new brewery is a GEM. Super chill ambiance decorated with reflective mirrors and aluminum foil of all things that creates the most unique vibe. The beer is delicious and made with herbs. Good snacks too! And music is super calming and ambient, rare for a brewery. 10/10 recommend can't wait to keep coming back to support a new local LA brewery.
