"Soma has an inauspicious exterior—an unmarked door and a bouncer—that descends into a cool metallic bunker of 007 nature. The impressive oval bar acts as a giant sharing table and there’s a short but excellent list of remixed, and sometimes even improved, takes on classic cocktails like the enticing kumquat zing of the mezcal margarita. It’s open until the early hours and if you’re in a group, there are a couple of very elite-feeling rooms that look out onto the bar." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, daisy meager, sinead cranna
"This sultry little basement spot in Soho is a destination for anyone who likes to cosplay being a James Bond villain, plus the cocktails are outstanding. It’s alchemy via the medium of a mezcal, coffee cherry vermouth, and burnt cashew-loaded Negroni. Soma’s short cocktail list remixes—nay, improves—the classics and serves them around one enormous shimmering silver central bar." - jake missing, rianne shlebak, sinead cranna, heidi lauth beasley
"Closing time: 1am Monday and Tuesday, 2am Wednesday and Thursday, 3am Friday and Saturday, 10.30pm Sunday Behold, our favourite bar in Soho. From the team behind casual Indian spot Kricket, Soma is an achingly cool place meant for anyone who has abandoned Sean Paul-imposed tinnitus in pursuit of greater thrills, like London’s most lethally sippable bay leaf martini. Sometimes there’s a queue after midnight and it’s a small space so opt for somewhere else if you’re rolling with a group. Or pledge your allegiance to a Soma splinter group in the name of expert cocktails." - jake missing, heidi lauth beasley
"Soma is a brilliant moody Soho cocktail bar from the team behind Kricket. As per the restaurant group’s Indian influence, things are done a little differently here. But different is good. Before ordering it will more than likely be stressed that their martini is an acquired taste. Bay leaf sake and pickled shallot feature. But traditionalists do not fear: this a superb, top-tier martini that swaps brine for a flirty whisper of pickle. Its temperature is also positively glacial." - jake missing, daisy meager
"Soma is our favourite bar in Soho. It’s achingly cool, it serves some of London’s most lethally sippable martinis, and it’s directly opposite The Devonshire. We have drowned our sorrows in this moody basement more times than we care to disclose—and yes, believing that we might be able to get a last-minute table at its neighbour by just asking very, very nicely counts as ‘sorrows’. Be warned, there is sometimes a queue after dark but it tends to move quickly and the kumquat and mezcal verde margarita is entirely worth exhibiting a trait we’re desperately trying to acquire—patience." - heidi lauth beasley
