Sombreros Mexican Cantina - Review - Hapeville - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"Sombreros in Hapeville offers serviceable Tex-Mex with a communal vibe. It’s the kind of spot where you round up friends to watch the game when the sports bar is too packed, bring a family that needs elbow room, or meet coworkers for margaritas and low-stakes gossip. There’s a good-sized patio for stretching out with sizzling, mildly seasoned fajitas, plus a long front bar if you’d rather toast beers. The food won’t blow you away. It’s all firmly average. But the menu is sprawling, so there are fair odds you'll walk away content—and even better odds if you stick to the basics. Order the Mikey taco, a fused soft-and-hard shell stuffed with grilled chicken and dressed in a Thousand Island–style sauce that actually pulls it together. Or get the perfectly fine Super Burrito stuffed with shredded chicken, lettuce, and chipotle salsa." - Jacinta Howard

Through travel for work I have the luxury of eating all over the world. I have had Mexican food in many many countries including Mexico. I have eaten at many places I consider fantastic, some as a repeat customer for decades. Sombreros has easily slid into my all-time Top 5 and maybe even Top 3. Everything was spot-on, fresh, super tasty. Every detail. Service was attentive, friendly and detail oriented. I was starving and thirsty. I started with their Top Shelf Margarita w/Herradura Blanco. It was absolutely perfect, strong and balanced. I had another later, also perfect. I decided on Tortilla Soup as an “app”, was really a meal in itself, teeming with fresh pulled chicken, fresh tortilla strips, cheese and veggies. It was perfect temp and a comfort food jackpot. I had originally wanted Enchiladas Suizas(my go to test dish and long time fave) but pivoted to the Sombreros Burrito with steak and mushrooms, as the soup had satiated my chicken needs🤣. Again, this entree was just absolute perfection, even the sour cream tasted special and super fresh, although that coulda been the Herradura doing it’s job. See pics for detail. The Burrito was filling but light at the same time, steak was perfectly charred and sliced. Just absolutely delicious. HIGHLY recommended. I will be back Sombreros!! And this time I’m bringing reinforcements‼️

Great good and cheap alcoholic drinks, margaritas are really good. Staff was friendly and on point. Had the fried fish it was really good. Queso dip is worth getting.

If it was not for John, I would’ve got up and left. He gave me the best service. He was not out Original waiter. He was helping out a young lady that I only seen once when she sat us down. The food was good. ASK FOR John… he is the BEST!!

It was one of those nights that I just had to have tacos! On my journey of exploring new places to eat, I ended up at Sombreros via the recommendation of a friend. The location was easy to find as it sits directly on the main strip. The parking lot is huge and has easy in/out access. As I walked up to the restaurant I could already tell it was a local fav. The ambiance was very chill. It was a nice day so there were people on the patio which added to the draw of the location. Walking in, there was a sign advising to seat yourself, thus we proceeded to do so. Within minutes of being seated chips and salsa were delivered to the table and seconds later we were greeted by our waitress Kiley. Kiley was very pleasant, all smiles, and a true bundle of excitement. She welcomed us in, took our drink and appetizer order, and gave us some time to review the menu. Appetizer: Bean Dip - cheesy, well flavored, huge portion. The menu has a variety of options to choose from. Though I know I wanted tacos, I am excited to go back to explore some of their other menu options… I decided on the 3 Taco Plate and swapped out my Rice and Beans for the Mexican Salad. Fish Taco - very flavorful, the fish was moist, and the fixings were fresh. This was a good taco and I will order it again Buffalo Chicken Taco - this one was my favorite. The chicken was fried perfectly. Crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. The taco had pieces of celery which to my surprise paired well with the taco. Not only did it add an additional layer of texture, however, the coolness of the celery paired well with the kick of the Buffalo sauce. Traditional Beef Taco - flavorful, meaty, and good. Perfect fix of a traditional taco. Overall, Sombreros was a pleasing experience. The food was good. Kiley provided great service. The restaurant was clean, and the atmosphere was upbeat and inviting.

Google
Mexican restaurants are a dime a dozen. They can be bland and boring. I normally don’t order fajitas because they came out dry and tasteless. Sombrero fajitas are full of flavor and can’t leave anything on the plate. The salsa is wonderful as well. Differently will be back.

I don't have anything bad to say about this restaurant. Portion size was amazing. Food was good. Drink good. Server attentive.. I'll go back.

Google
Great food, great prices, fast service, open seating (seat yourself), big menu, I can’t really say anything bad about this place. Authentic Mexican cuisine. I work in the area and people from my office have been coming here for lunch every day for the last 10 years, that’s how you know they are consistently good. We went last week for dinner and it was amazing again so figured I need to leave the review. I got the molcajete, a huge dish with a combination of meats, cheeses, veggies etc. I usually get a combo lunch but this was dinner and I was starving. It hit the spot and I think it’s their most expensive item at $22, which is crazy compared to other places where it can run you close to $40. They brought 3 rounds of chips and salsa at no charge and they have huge soda cups, something I’m particular about (small cups plus bad service means the cups are empty for the whole meal). 10/10 would recommend for lunch or dinner.

Google
For the area, this place is a notch above them all. The food was fantastic, the prices were amazing. The drinks were delicious. The staff was helpful and attentive. The area as a whole isn't the safest feeling area i mean for 10 miles, not just this small area. But I felt safe in this establishment.

Yelp
Always well visited. Good solid food. Good service. Love sitting on their outdoor patio and thier margaritas. Stick to one margarita if you have to drive.

Yelp
I like to view this place as the "End of the Week Teacher Wind Down" spot... Nonetheless, we went as a family. Our server was great! He was really thoughtful and took care of us. The Food: Great! Absolutely Great! Everything was flavorful and cooked exactly how you thought it should be. The Drinks: We ordered a pitcher of the Texas Margarita.. Can't lie, it snuck up on us a little bit. All in all, this is a gem in the Hapeville area... Please visit when you can

Yelp
Definitely a staple restaurant for my friends and I. You truly can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Food or drinks will always be A1!! We usually sit at the bar and are well taken care of even on their busiest days! Food comes out fairly quick too. And I know you were wondering...how's the salsa?! Fresh!!! It is heavier on the tomato base taste but I wasn't mad at it just needed some heat imo. But the queso with jalapeño always a must!!! Soon as you walk in you will be transported to Mexico from the decor to the music. Authentic. As always, we'll be back!! Update: Found my receipt from my last visit. Jessica took care of us and my friends are true regulars so she knew their drink order by heart. I only ordered the Fajita Quesadilla with double rice! Yummy!

Yelp
Sombreos is a cornerstone of the Hapeville experience. The restaurant is locally owned and operated and has served the community for almost 15 years, being a stop shop for airport workers, teachers in the surrounding area and a number of youth leagues. As we move further into 2025 financial burdens are being hoisted onto the back of both the individual and the small business, seeing the prices of the menu increase. Still Sombreos fights to keep their items at accessible prices, remaining on the side of the consumer and community.

Yelp
I come for the lobster tacos and sherry's pollo plate. Those are the most consistent meals I've had.. the lobster taco is always good.. and sherry's pollo is always fresh, and today wasn't any different.. the guacamole I ordered needed a little salt but it was good. The queso my daughter ordered was good.. my husband also enjoyed his nachos as well..

Yelp
Stop by Sombreros for a quick after-work lunch. I wasn't very hungry so I decided on Chicken soup ( Tlpena soup). The soup was just ok. I had to doctor up the flavor with salt, pepper, and hot sauce. But it served its purpose. The complementary salsa and chips were decent. Sombreros is a good spot to try out if you're in the area and feeling Mexican. I can say I will try Sombreros again.

Yelp
GREAT National Margarita Day experience!!! The VIBE was GREAT!!! DJ MIX EXCEPTIONAL, FOOD ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS, WAITER SERVICE ON POINT!!! 1 point was taken away for small toddlers allowed to dangerously run amuck throughout the restaurant throughout the evening. Otherwise, GRRRREAT!!!

Yelp
The food is very good. I would definitely come back. Nice medium quiet. Very chilled and relax. Great customer service.

Yelp
I frequent this spot often and have yet to be disappointed with the food or service. They have the best steak tacos I e ever had...so flavorful and the pico is ! I took a chance with the wings and they were better than most wing spots. I never get tired of this place

Yelp
I think this is a pretty solid Mexican spot! I used to live near, but I still come back when I'm in hapeville. The food is good and the vibe is super down to earth. They have happy hours and weekly specials. The service has always been good. I love Mexican spots where the bring you chips and salsa less than 2 mins after you're seated. One of my favorite dishes is the whole fish entree. I think it's talapia. However, the fajitas are the next best option in my opinion.

Yelp
Its exactly what it claims to be and exactly what you want when you find yourself here at the end of a long work day/week. Tacos taste like the epitome of tacos (very seasoned as they say) very indulgent, not like oh I want to savor 2 small street tacos, but like oh I want to stuff my mouth full of tacos and beans and beer. Staff is very friendly, nice little area here. Thanks y'all.
google avatar

Denishia T.

Yelp
The parking lot has a lot of broken glass and I even saw a random pair of shoes. I was so hungry that I forgot to take pics. The strawberry margarita and fajita bowl with added mushrooms was DELICIOUS! Our server was a bit dry but the food and drinks made up for it. The server lack of UMPH is the only reason why I cannot award 5 stars. I also didn't check out the restroom or pay much attention to anything other than the old boxing gloves hanging above the bar. I kinda wanted some history. Overall, I'm thankful for my good looking date who kept me a tad bit mesmerized (TMI I KNOW LOL) so if there were some interior or exterior issues, I completely missed them.

Mary J.

Yelp
Over priced and way to salty for me. And I didn't appreciate being charged 20% on my meal because I had a party of 3. Me and my 2 daughters.
google avatar

Matthew V.

Yelp
Always good service here.. Very consistent and big portions.. I stopped by here to get a quick bite and didn't even need a menu.. Good vibes and customer service is good.. The vibe here is good, family oriented or after work happy hour type atmosphere.

Knownazz M.

Yelp
The food was good but the menu is out of date, the sever that we had was impatient and tried to gaslight us, the communication for certain things were terrible and even though the restaurant was basically empty, service took forever for everything. Also a lot of the employees were just sitting around and talking.

Yelp
Love love love this spot - the food is great and the staff is kind. The food comes out super fast. It's a great place to watch the game or hang with friends.

Yelp
This place right here was so fun!!! Located in a shopping plaza in Hapeville. I forgot the name. Tons of parking. Restaurant has indoor seating, but We we're outside. Fun people watching! Service was what made this spot so fun. Our waitstaff had all the patience for a bunch of people who should of gone home 2 drinks before. I ordered a chicken taco and a side order of guacamole. My friends had already started enjoying the libations, and recommended their margarita. They didn't fail me. The chicken taco was loaded. But shredded chicken can be a bit dry. But that guacamole was everything. I will definitely be back!!!

Yelp
My cousin and I came here on a whim one evening. We were waiting for some Cuban food so we decided to come and have a margarita. We ended up getting some queso and adding chorizo and it was delicious. Everyone was pretty friendly at the bar so we decided to come back the following week on Tuesday for taco Tuesday. We came back in this time brought my son it sat in the bar area but at a table as he is a little boy. She decided to get the fajitas because the reviews said they were really good. She enjoyed them but it was a lot and she had quite a bit to take home. I ordered a few of the tacos and it was a meal for about $10 with two tacos and it included rice and beans. My son got the kid quesadilla with chicken and that also came with rice and beans. We ordered two queso dip, one with chorizo And the other was plain. The bill was not that expensive and we also had two shots of Don Julio along with two margaritas. I did like how they added the 18% gratuity but it was really big font on the receipt so you knew it was added. Our server was Eric and he was extremely attentive and came right over whenever we needed anything. This may be my new favorite spot for taco Tuesdays. They also have specials each day of the week and they are located on the back of the menu.
google avatar

Jae S.

Yelp
The service was okay but they need to be more attentive. We waited 15 minutes before menus were given. However, the food was really really good. It tasted fresh. My date says she would just come back for the mango margaritas.
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
Service is hit or miss. You can normally find the servers sitting at the booth by the kitchen eating or playing on their phone. All while waiting on someone to get you a drink. I've seen multiple times the server eat, lick their fingers and the go directly and run food out to the table. Management don't seem to care either. The food is good once it comes out.
google avatar

Joy C.

Yelp
I've practically become a regular here, so I guess it's time to show them some love on Yelp! Location and Parking Sombrero's is located on Central Avenue in Hapeville. Parking is plentiful and free. Venue and Atmosphere The restaurant has booths/tables on one side and a bar on the other. The bar features pool tables and a full liquor selection. They also have a renovated patio, which I'll be enjoying in the summer months. Food and Beverages I typically get some tacos or a quesadilla. The tacos are delicious with well seasoned meat, and the quesadilla has a good amount of cheese as well. Their drinks are strong, flavorful, and decently priced. Service Our servers are always prompt, polite, and attentive. Verdict I'll be back next time I don't feel like cooking, lol.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
A great place and vibe. It will take you one beer to decide what to have from the menu. Everything is delicious and reasonable. I love the young servers who work very hard. Wonderful spot to watch a game. Worth the Uber ride to get away from Virginia Ave.

Sheila J.

Yelp
Sombreros in Hapeville, GA. I give this restaurant 3 stars. Why? It's not that the food is not good, nor that the atmosphere is not great. I give this restaurant 3 stars because they punish you for ordering over $50 by automatically charging everyone at the table a 20% gratuity. Not only that, they treat all the patrons at a table as one, so you only get one bill. You can't divide the bill, and if you do, and your part of the bill is under $50 you still get charged 20% because the total at that table was over $50. And here's the real kicker, it's not just for tables of 6 or more. So the catch is, if it's a party of 4 or more or if you go over $50 you're automatically charged 20%. So order wisely.
google avatar

Nicole A.

Yelp
Every time I come to Sombreros I swear I'm never coming back, and then inevitably I do. It's a love/hate relationship but boils down to the food being pretty good and the service being awful. I have literally never had a dinner at Sombreros where all of our meals were correct. Not once. And no one orders anything complicated, they just come out with the wrong meat or as a similar but incorrect dish. There's also a long list of presumptuous rules in the back of the menu, including about making changes to an order, which is pretty ironic. Finally, there's an automatic service charge, regardless of party size or amount. I am all for restaurant employees making a living wage but find it ridiculous that the restaurant won't pay it and instead has the audacity to require patrons. Also because of this, the service is consistency slow and erroneous. On the flip side, the steak is to die for (I love the fajitas and the fajita nachos but you can't go wrong with anything), and the kids meals are a great value. Other minor details: the bathrooms are gross and in the womens on of the stalls has had a huge hole in a stall's wall for months. Also the dining room booths are all elevated so high chairs do not fit. Be prepared to wait for one of thee floor tables inside if you need to use a high chair.

Yelp
Service 10/10. Food 8/10. Drinks 1/10. 8/10 not because the food was not flavorful, it was delicious but I am a fan of spicy and my plate which states spicy was not spicy. Drinks, all we tasted was sugar. The service from our waiter was amazing!

Phyllis S.

Yelp
The food are phenomenal and service is awesome and I would recommend this place. Also the place is very clean and the staff is wonderful.

Alexis M.

Yelp
Okay food but nothing comes out hot! They charge an extra 20% to your tab if it's over 50 and if they mess up your order they don't even try to accommodate you. Horrible customer service and will not be returning
google avatar

Joshua E.

Yelp
This service sucks. It's the worst. Like I dont understand. There is No one at the bar. Been sitting here for 20mins Like this,is,very bad.

Bridget D.

Yelp
I wasn't expecting much as the average review was 3.5 & I figured it was your typical average Mexican food place. I was pleasantly surprised - & I got takeout! The Sherry's Pollo Plate was delicious! Perfectly prepared pounded thin chicken breast with sautéed mushrooms & onions and cheese sauce. And the churros also were delicious! The salsa also was good.

Yelp
I don't have to go far out of my neighborhood to fine good good and this place has proven that for a fact! Great food, friendly staff, plenty of parking!!!

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for awhile now so I was super excited. I'm from Texas so I know some good Mexican / Tex-Mex food. They allowed us to sit wherever we wanted which was nice (we sat on the patio which was nice). The server was sweet but there were a few things about the food. Our cheese dip came out ice cold but it was melted, our server took it back to have it Microwaved (curious if they are using prepackaged cheese dip and just heating it up for people). It came back out with a hot bowl but the cheese was still cold. We let it be and just ate it because we aren't fussy customers. Fajitas were nicely flavored but the shrimp were the cheap small ones you can buy frozen at the grocery store which I don't person care for. Sides were good. Had a Texas Margarita pitcher with strawberry flavor which was tasty. The main thing that threw me off, I am a big tipper since I have prior server experience. The menu and online said they will add gratuity for 5 people or more... there were only 2 of us and they tacked on a 18% gratuity. I was going to in good faith tip more but this bothered me a lot so I just let them have the 18%. They should really change their verbiage online and on the menus if they are going to do this regardless of party size. I understand it, but communication is needed so that it doesn't feel like discrimination. (I don't feel that way but I am sure others visiting could)
google avatar

R P.

Yelp
They have the best grill shrimp tacos. What I get is not on the menu but they make them for me. Basically it's grill shrimp with their jalapeño slaw= awesome.
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
This place used to be the bomb. Now,not so much. Here for lunch. The complimentary chips are stale. Like they been in a bag sitting on top of my refrigerator for months. Same with the chips in the nachos I ordered Oh, don't even think about trying to locate your waitress. I guess it's siesta time.
google avatar

Shannon W.

Yelp
Yep...even 8 years ago I thought this place should've been given three stars but gave four due to Ashley the bartender. I don't recall ever being here but found I had already reviewed. I let a coworker pick lunch and I was so busy I didn't have time to check Yelp beforehand. We were seated quickly and our food came out quickly as well so I was perplexed when my tacos came out cold. I order a buffalo chicken taco, taco de compechano along with a traditional beef taco. If you view the picture, you can see there is minimal buffalo sauce on it. The chicken tenders were cold and tasted as though they came from the lowest end supermarket you can think of. The skirt steak in the compechano was rubbery and had zero flavor. The traditional taco was ice cold, lacked flavor and was basically inedible. Grateful Mexican is for the most part inexpensive. Never again will be back to this restaurant. Sorry
google avatar

Joselyn M.

Yelp
1st time coming here from out of town, and I wanted a place close by to my hotel. So I walked on over, so close and convenient. It was perfect. The food was good. I ordered the shrimp fajitas. I'm surprised they didn't have horchata though. I know it's a Tex Mex vibe, but that's a pretty classic Mexican drink. Other than that, service was great. The 2 ladies kept checking on me which was nice. Not overwhelming, but a great gesture of care. I def recommend this place. Good vibes. Keep up the service Sombreros.

C C.

Yelp
Food is still great and the place seems to be thriving but I was disappointed to see that with only 4 of us at a table an automatic 20% gratuity was added to the bill with a suggestion for more. When I inquired about this charge, I was told any order over $50 requires 20% tip and any table with 5 people requires 20% tip. It also doesn't matter if you are on separate checks - it's $50 per table.
google avatar

Robyn C.

Yelp
Terrible food! Not fresh! Service hit or miss. Lots of regulars. Nasty bathroom. Do not go

Erick V.

Yelp
What kind of mexican restaurant doesnt serve coffee. Been to this place 3 times and i can tell you, theres more out there do the little drive and find a better place to eat your so called mexican food else where. Plate was advertised in their own menu one way but served to me with different type of bread, not once the waitress came to let me know it would come out this way, that could've helped me understand that perhaps they had run out of their original bread, but no. The first time I visited the guys I was with went through those chips quick, waiter promised us to bring another basket of chips, we finished our meals and they worried about bringing out the tickets for us to way while we were still eating . No bueno
google avatar

Brenda J.

Yelp
Terrible service!!! We were there two hours and they didn't put in one of the orders. The food was just ok. I wouldn't go back.

Yelp
If you're craving texmex let this be your stop! Great drinks and food at a very affordable cost. I got the flautas and a carne asada taco the taquitos(flautas) were super filling but I wanted to try a taco which didn't disappoint. The peach margarita was really good got it in a pitcher as it was more cost effective than just getting one by one lol. If you want to sit outside they have patio seating.

J'aime La Nourriture O.

Yelp
Hola! I would give 5 stars for service and 1 star for the food.. super duper bland food and quality. Would not recommend. Really did want to love! Gracias por todo. Not for me. Thank you. Also not sure how the bartender also packages the to go orders without hand washing. Can't be right ...

Yelp
I've probably been here 10x or more. This place has been very consistent. The place is fairly clean, except the restrooms. The restrooms are pretty rough. Staff has always been friendly. The service is very fast. Food prep is very quick! The food itself, is very good. It's Tex mex, but it's still good. I always come here when I'm in a hurry.

Yelp
Excellent service by Erik . Great food and drinks. We had a great time. I recommend the skinny margaritas

Yelp
This place is 10/10!! Right when you sit down chips and salsa are brought to you. Lots of food items on the menu as well as drinks. Great customer service , everyone super nice. I got the 3 taco plate and my favorite is the pastor and got myself a michelada and just perfect! Will definitely come back on my next layover.

Yelp
It's descent for last min spot to many fruit flies flying around. The door by the table annoying to hear ppl go in and out. Lock the door or change it where it won't t make that noise. You sit yourself which is cool but, sign is only posted in front one door not the other. Just to much in and out like it's a fast food joint n not restaurant. Guacamole chunks not to my liking, fried shrimp taco ahh, wings the kids got where hot n I mean steam but, good. Bathroom needs a remodel broke toilet soon as you walk in and soap dispenser broke which is not good you need to wash you hands. The price of food wouldn't be a problem if it was better service and restaurant look my like restaurant instead of fast food spot. Seat at the booths have holes you need to look into renovations.

Yelp
Spot just next to the OG Chick-fil-A diner in ATL. Good food, fair prices, quick staff. Only knock is the location and area is slightly unsavory.

Yelp
I just love this place. Food is always good and consistent. Service is good and really like a family setting once they know you. I've literally been coming here for over 10+ years and I've been coming more and more of lately. Kudos to you all elevating and making people feel at home

Yelp
Great food. Chips and salsa are delicious, and the tacos, rice and beans are affordable and tasty. Sometimes you're not able to phone in orders because their phone isn't on or disconnected and you can get different service depending on the waiter/waitress.
