12 of Boston’s Best Mushroom Dishes | Eater Boston

"Sometimes soup is a meal in itself. Try the coconut soup at Somtum Modern Thai Cuisine, with mushrooms that float in a flavor-rich coconut broth that’s cut with bright lemongrass and lime, for a flavor-filled warmer. The restaurant opened in West Roxbury in 2017 and focuses on Thai classics for lunch and dinner, like this vegetarian spin on the iconic tom kha soup (which is often served with chicken and shrimp)." - Nathan Tavares

Got the tofu and vegetable soup to start things off, and it couldn’t have been more bland. Things got a lot better with the green curry with tofu. Nice and spicy and a fair portion. Enjoyed that I could get sticky rice on the side. Food was piping, hot and well packaged. Unfortunately, it came with no utensils or napkins, even though I requested them. When will I ever learn to just rip open the neatly stapled bag at the restaurant? They charge a convenience fee even if you order for pick up. I guess it’s correctly named as it makes things more convenient for them to not have to take your order manually.

Google
Great food, very reasonable prices, and excellent service. This place deserves way more business than it's getting. Some of the best Thai food in the area. The crispy chicken drunken noodles is especially good.

Decided to dine in on a Friday night. We were the only ones dining (a few people came in after us) we ordered crab rangoons, green papaya salad, ginger crispy duck & mango curry. Everything was fresh and delicious. Service was attentive and the atmosphere was very nice.

I’m so pleased that there are such great places to eat lunch in the middle of west Roxbury center. This gem of a restaurant was not packed at lunch time, they offer a nice lunch menu that includes and appetizer, an entree and a drink. Apart from being quite affordable the food was delightful. The shrimp rolls where fresh and hardy with all those crunchy vegetables, my mouth is watering just thinking about it. The Basil rice was so colorful and jam packed with flavor. There was so much shrimp and the portion was so big I took some home to eat later. Ithey also have Thai iced tea!!!! I recommend this place for anyone stopping by in West Roxbury, I know the locals love this place and come visit plenty. The place does not offer delivery until 4pm, and on weekdays they close from 3 to 6pm.

Google
Really good Thai food. Fresh and clean. Friendly staff. The coconut soup and fried rice are particularly outstanding. Also very reasonably priced.

Google
I think the pad thai here is the best I've ever had. Sublime. I also love the curry dishes, mango curry with fried tofu is my favorite. Service and atmosphere is lovely, although they have not had dine in service for very long.

Google
This spot is my preferable place! Inside restaurant is relatively clean, all staffs follow CDC guidelines for COVID19. We had crab fired rice and crispy duck with tamarind sauce for our dinner. They were super solid! I’ll send my friends to this restaurant with no hesitation.

Google
Somtum is my family's favorite place for takeout when we want to treat ourselves. My husband and I went to Thailand on our honeymoon, and every time we order from here, it takes us back. He's a regular with green curry or drunken noodles. I love the Tom Kha coconut soup and the Larb salad. My kids don't like spice but they love the crispy pad thai. Don't sleep on the Thai iced tea- it should come with a warning label, because it's addictive.

Yelp
The restaurant is cozy with many dine in seatings. My favorite dish was the chicken wings and tom yum soup. Very clean restaurant and the food seemed fresh. The staff were very nice and patient with our order. Will definitely come back to try the other appetizers.

Yelp
I love their Tom Yum soup! This is an authentic Thai restaurant, family owned. They have been in West Roxbury for several years, closed during COVID, and have opened their doors once again. I am so glad they are back so that we can experience them again. Their drunken noodles are the only I eat (I'm very picky with noodles).

Yelp
Small cozy place, great food. Really friendly staff. Clean and well maintained. Pad Thai, crab rangoons were really good. Drunken noodle also is a must try.

Yelp
I travel from the way out burbs to come here. Love this place! Food is always good and fast.

Yelp
Yummy!! Delicious food! Generous portion. I ordered through delivery and I got the basil pad Thai with vegetables. It was absolutely delicious. I had not tried this location before but I will be back. Pad Thai had a nice amount of sauce and wasn't at all dry like some other places, and they put extra crumbled peanuts on top as requested (I removed some toppings). Yum yum!!!

Yelp
My wife and I visited yesterday for the first time - it won't be our last. We started with the fresh rolls. Lots of spring vegetables, in fact they were overflowing with green veggies. The brown sauce was sweeter than I'm used too, but very nice. Could have used a little more mint. My wife ordered the chicken green curry (mild) and I ordered the chicken green curry (medium). She said her curry was actually too mild, but there was a nice burn. Mine could have been a little spicier too, but overall, both curries were delicious. She ordered the brown rice, which she found nutty with a satisfying taste. To complete our meal, we had the mango sticky rice. That was a real treat. The mango was fresh and the rice was warm and filling. Our server was gracious and attentive. We will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Hair in Food! I'm sorry but with take out orders costing upwards of $80 + these days the people that work in Your kitchen NEED TO WEAR A HAIRNET! It's gross-- it went in the garbage and everyone wound up eating grilled cheese for dinner. Two other Tai places in town and the food is all the same. Won't be ordering again.

PB K.

Yelp
Drunken noodles were a little overcooked but could be because we got take out. Very good flavor. Crab fried rice was delicious. Green and red curries were also flavorful and delicious.

Yelp
I ordered take out from Somtum from the first time yesterday and just wow! I was completely blown away. First off, pics don't do this food justice so if you're scrolling through photos, I don't think these or any other pictures truly capture how incredible this food was. Do yourself a favor and order the drunken noodles with beef-I took a chance on this as I'm usually skeptical of beef at first, but it was tender and delicious. Paired perfectly with the drunken noodle dish (the noodles were cooked perfectly). The veggies in my panang curry tasted fresh and the chicken was also very tender. Not pictured, but I also ordered the gyoza and it was truly fantastic. I rarely give 5 stars, but this was very well deserved. I felt like my order was perfect and I'll definitely be ordering weekly now, but I'm very excited to try the other dishes on the menu. 10/10 looking forward to going back and I don't think I'll be ordering Thai from anywhere but here from now on!!

Yelp
Came here for Thai tea! It was amazing! Very creamy and great tea flavor! Would definitely come back to try the food in the future!
google avatar

Yelp
Updated to 5 stars since they just can't be beat :) The best Thai food around and we've tried A LOT of Thai restaurants! We especially love their panang curry and pineapple fried rice. So flavorful and made with real veggies rather than frozen mixed bag! Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Soooo delicious! I ordered takeout on a Friday night and pickup was quick for an order of Pad Thai, Fried Rice, and dumplings. Everything was so flavorful and cooked to perfection. There was ample protein and vegetables in each dish, and the portions were generous! This place is definitely my new favorite take-out spot!
google avatar

Rebecca M.

Yelp
Somtum has been on my list of Thai places to try for a while now, and they really delivered on flavor! I stopped by for take-out this weekend and ordered the basil fried rice with tofu and the tom yum soup. The tom yum soup was spicy perfection and everything that I wanted on a cold day. The basil fried rice was a super generous size for the money--I should have leftovers for 1-2 days depending on how hungry I get! I also showed up 15 min before my order time and my food was ready for me anyways! Score! Doesn't get any better than that. Can't wait to go back soon and try more of the menu.

Yelp
Got a seaweed salad and udon noodles with tofu for takeout. The seaweed salad was good but it was in the bag on top of the hot food so by the time I got home it was warm and less appealing. The noodle dish was extremely oily. I almost couldn't eat it because it was so heavy and my mouth was just coated in oil. The portion seemed slightly less than I typically get at Thai restaurants as well. Not sure I'd return here.
google avatar

Charlene E.

Yelp
I ordered delivery from here and had the chili salmon, white rice, and basil beef. The sauce was not as spicy as I wanted and was not that flavorful. My sister said that her beef basil was also lacking flavor. I would order here again and try another dish but dine-in next time.

Yelp
I think this is our new favorite local Thai spot. The country pad thai was flavorful and had its rice noodles cut shorter for easier eating, the 'broccoli' entree in brown sauce had a delicious brown sauce and had ground chicken as a choice, the Indonesian fried rice was fresh and delicious and the chicken nice and crispy, and the fried tofu triangles came with my favorite peanut-topped sauce. Not a dud in the bunch- the only slight downfall was that the tofu was cold and soggy by the time it got to us, but that's par for the course in Covid times I think. Excellent quality and flavor here.

Yelp
Such fantastic Thai food! This is one of our regular spots to order from. The flavors are on point, spice levels perfect and good quality high. Owners are nice and food comes out fast. Yellow curry and pepper beef are some faves

Joan J.

Yelp
We got off to a rocky start. Our to-go order had been mistakenly picked up by another party. But, Somtum made a quick recovery, apologized, and remade our 4 items within 10 minutes--amazing; and we walked out with our order within our expected timeframe. All of our dishes exceeded our expectations. Crispy rolls were a great beginning. The eggplant basil with chicken hit the right notes with the perfect amount of spice and the Massaman curry with chicken was also a winner. The steamed veggie side was fresh and lightly steamed to be barely tender. They use fresh high quality ingredients and have a deft hand with seasoning to produce balanced dishes. They easily earned an A+ for both their service and the food. Bravo!

Yelp
This restaurant takes the place of the old Sticky Rice Cafe on Centre Street and they're been open for about 2 weeks now. They definitely upgraded the interior a bit as it looks nicer than before. I got take out here a few days because I was in hurry and wanted to try this place out. I called ahead and my food was ready in about 20 minutes. Unfortunately, the food here was pretty bad. I ordered the regular Pad Thai and Coconut soup to go. For me, messing up a classic food item is very hard to overlook. The Pad Thai was VERY plain and literally tasted like nothing. Even loads of Sriracha and lime juice couldn't save it, it literally had no flavor. It was one of the worst Pad Thai's I've ever had. The coconut milk was also not that great. The chicken was rough and tasted like rubber. The broth itself was just okay. Maybe it would be better if I dined it, but they gave me a very small serving. Overall, I felt ripped off that I paid $17 for this very mediocre food. I might give this restaurant another chance later since they're still kinda new, but not anytime soon. There are better Asian restaurants around.

Yelp
Food is awesome! Gotten delivery a few times cause I have two little ones and first responder hubby with long hours. Love this when I'm in a pinch
google avatar

RM M.

Yelp
Excellent food. Dumplings, salad, soup, rice dishes all excellent. Highly recommended.

Betsy F.

Yelp
For a "classy" restaurant "good for groups" in the restaurant description, they only do take out. Big disappointment.
google avatar

Natalia P.

Yelp
Drunken noodles was fresh and had a light basil/sweet spicy flavor. The portion was a snack size and not very filling. I'm a huge fan of Thai Iced Tea and this has to be the most sugar filled beverage I've ever had. I took a sip and that was it--way too much sugar! I will update my review if I go back and order something else. Place appears to be clean and they follow COVID guidelines. I did go back and ordered the udon noodles which is the exact sauce used in the drunken noodles. This was filling. This place actually takes direction very well--I asked for mild and no onions--dish was perfect. I also tried the steamed wontons (chicken) and it was good.

Yelp
Com for som yum at somtum sometime! This family-owned restaurant serves up some delicious Thai food and amazing hospitality. I came here with a friend and ordered beef pad Thai which was great (pictured below). Our server was also the owner and was very friendly. At the end of our meal the owner gave us complimentary mochi since he felt bad about slow service, but my friend and I had not even thought twice about this because the service had been great and reasonable! Just goes to show how considerate this business is of its customers. At the very end the owner's adorable daughter came to us with a raffle for a prize and we got two very nice pens! It was a unique experience and made our night!

Yelp
We came from Thailand and visited many Thai restaurants in LA, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Florida. Now!! I am in Boston and I found amazing Thai food here. My orders are amazing, it's yummy like original Thai food in Thailand.
google avatar

Kyla A.

Yelp
One of my go-to places for takeout. All their soups are delicious, and the fresh rolls, pad Thai, and cashew nut chicken are favorites as well. We've also been regulars for over a year and I don't think they have ever gotten one of our orders wrong. Great staff and excellent food!
google avatar

Alisa J.

Yelp
The customer service was great! The gentleman that answered the phone was pleasant and patient. The food was fresh and delicious. I ordered duck and chicken pad thai. Delicious

Yelp
We just moved back to Boston from Texas and have been on the prowl for Thai food that was as delicious as what we had in Houston. We have found it with Somtum Modern Thai. We only started eating there since the pandemic started (doing our best to support local restaurants during this challenging time) so we can't comment on the dine in experience. But the takeout is divine!! I've had the yellow curry with tofu and vegetables. My husband got the pad thai with chicken. They both were delicious. If you're hankering for some Thai, definitely check out Somtum. You won't be disappointed.

Karen M.

Yelp
We live nearby but this was our first time ordering take-out for some reason (I guess because we have a favorite place already and were not inclined to try somewhere new). It was incredible. We ordered Penang curry and spicy udon and we ate too much because it was just so good. Prices very reasonable and staff was super nice. Highly recommended.

Kelly Q.

Yelp
Tofu & veggie Pad Thai was excellent! All the vegetables were fresh and crisp, the flavor was delightful, and it was not greasy at all! Quite possibly the best Pad Thai I've had in Boston.

Kevin H.

Yelp
Great food - wonderful flavors and the orders are always correct. And very nice people!

Yelp
I went to this place a couple of weeks ago. We would like to have some authentic Thai food so we ordered papaya salad, Nam-Tok-Moo which is spicy grilled pork salad (Thai style) and steamed whole fish and of course some sticky rice. Papaya salad - Amazingly done. I ordered extra spicy so yes it's spicy but flavorful. Couldn't stop eating it... seriously. Nam-Tok-Moo - It was great! Grilled pork was soft and tender. Stemed whole fish in lime sauce - this was our most favorite dish. Fish was huge and well steamed so it's juicy. The sauce tasted amazing. Not too spicy but very delicious. Must try. I have to say that I was impressed even though they are pretty new but the food was delicious and authentic (I am Thai so I can tell if the food is Americanized or authentic.) P.S. you can ask for Thai menu, you will discover some special authentic Thai dishes! :D

Yelp
We love the food here! It's so fresh and delicious. Both times we have had it delivered and it arrived hot and crisp. It's our new favorite for Thai food.
google avatar

Yupei W.

Yelp
We ordered take out once. The food is very nice and delicious! I really pike the curry and how their food tasted with enough "heat."
google avatar

Fabrizio C.

Yelp
I don't know how people can say "pretty bad" for the food at this restaurant! Probably they've never tried really bad food or probably they are used to having Gordon Ramsey at home who every night cooks for them! I loved Sticky Rice a lot but I found this place clean and the food is good!
google avatar

Nanut J.

Yelp
This is the best restaurant in town. Came here for dinner and I was very impressed with the food. Started out with chicken wing and it was great. I ordered Som tum, Nam-Tok-Moo , and Tom-Zaab. I enjoyed everything, especially the num-tok-moo . Staff was courteous and friendly. Go on in and give them a try. I promise you won't be disappointed. Can't wait to be back !!!!!

Yelp
This is the best Thai restaurant in Boston area. We came here for work and vacation. We really want to eat Thai food especially Somtum. After searching in yelp, we found this restaurant. This place offers authentic Thai food. It's tasty and reasonable price. The place is clean with excellent service. Don't miss it!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious jungle curry and fresh rolls. Beautiful little restaurant and the service is great!
google avatar

Jasmin T.

Yelp
I really like this place but they didn't get my order right tonight when I ordered green curry with veggies and tofu. It came without the tofu. Everything else was good and tasty, but that was disappointing bc I always try to pick a protein
google avatar

Navid S.

Yelp
We have ordered from Somtum Thai many times. Their Kimchi udon is best I've had in Boston and the Crab Rangoon also good. Food quality is consistent and on time.

Yelp
A very solid dining experience on the main shopping street of West Roxbury. Protip: there is a parking lot right across the street. 0.5 star- ambiance. Well-lit and clean restaurant with nice Thai pop (I think?) playing in the background. Bathroom was clean as well. Not exactly fancy or particularly quirky but a little 1 star- taste. Everything was yummy. The mango sticky rice came with fresh mango, which we loved. The glass noodle appetizer was pretty special, with spicy ground chicken and glass noodles as well as celery greens. We had to forcibly prevent ourselves from eating everything so we'd have leftovers for the next day. 1 star- friendly, fast service. We were the only dine-in customers in the restaurant and the server balanced speed, attentiveness, and friendliness very well. 1 star- value. We had a Nift so saved $15 but otherwise, apps are $10 or under, entrees are $10-20, and desserts are $5-8. Reasonable prices. 0.5 star- innovation. The glass noodle salad appetizer was really tasty -- good balance of heat and acidity -- but otherwise everything else on the menu appeared to be standard Thai restaurant fare.
google avatar

Rick B.

Yelp
Tried for the first time tonight and was very impressed. Food was fresh and perfectly cooked. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Nav R.

Yelp
Great options. Not too expensive. Nothing too fancy, hence the 4 star rating. There's several thai options in this area, so it's hard to stand out. Parking can sometimes be challenging.

Yelp
It all started when the wife and myself were driving down centre st looking for a new random restaurant to order from. We randomly chose WRONG. We ordered the Beef Teritaki. First of all the teriyaki sauce was WATERY beyond belief. The flavors were bland. The vegetables were so undercooked and hard that i could not chew them. The beef was also barely cooked. Almost as if it was thrown all together for a cpl of minutes then NEXT order who cares if this one is cooked. We also had the Coconut Chicken Soup. Great idea wrong execution . Too much lemon/lime. Not enough chicken. Figured for almost ten bucks id get more than 2 little pieces of chicken. The rest was coconut milk, lime, oil and scallions and mushroom. All in all. The place looks nice from outside but as soon as you have the food you notice the immediate lack of quality and/or care for the actual product that is being sold at the establishment. I would have enjoyed regular ol Chinese food. At least they put flavor and give you a lot. PS. Just because you are West Roxbury does not mean that you have a free pass to hike the price. Its pretty obvious that the pricing of their menu does not match the quality of the product.

Yelp
A $15 gift certificate drew us here and I'm glad it did! Absolutely delicious food, generous portions, quick service, clean restaurant, and not expensive. Lots of great options and everything tasted very fresh. We ate at the restaurant and there were several other full tables. Lots of people in and out picking up take-out. It's a casual atmosphere and parking was very easy for us. We'll definitely be back!

Angela L.

Yelp
Good little restaurant that I go for takeout. Good sized portions and average priced. The staff (I assume the owner because it's usually always the one person who's at the front desk) is nice. I usually go once every two weeks or so and order my usual Pad Thai, crazy noodle or some curry/rice. Sometime I think the noodles are a bit too oily but that doesn't stop me from going back.
google avatar

Allie S.

Yelp
I haven't visited the restaurant but got to taste several dishes when they provided catering for a lunch I attended. I tried their yellow curry chicken, cashew chicken, and pad thai and they were all great. Everything seemed freshly prepared and arrived hot. Would definitely like to try out their restaurant and order other dishes.
google avatar

Yasaman D.

Yelp
Our take out order was ready pretty quickly! We had drunken noodle which was really delicious and well made. I wasn't as impressed with the mango curry's flavor fulness, it seems that they had just put a bunch of veggies in the sauce without letting them simmer together to integrate. Papaya salad was pretty bland unlike the ones I had before in Bangkok.
google avatar

Indeya B.

Yelp
Got some take out from here and it was absolutely delicious for not actually sitting down and eating in the restaurant. Usually thai take out is a hit or miss. I got the tom yum chicken soup, that was delicious. I loved the blend of all the different ingredients and nothing was overbearing. I also ordered vegetable pad thai. The taste was good, good sauce and the noodles weren't dry. Very large portion of food as well. I got a thai iced tea and that was great as well. This was definitely a good experience for thai in the Mass area.
