The 13 Best Restaurants In Kingston, New York 2024

"To say there’s a lot going on at Sonder would be a massive understatement. The dark dining room walls occasionally glow with light from disco balls and taper candles, and an ornate mirror with LED strip lights in the bathroom gives you a full-body view of yourself on the can. It can be a bit overwhelming at times, but you’ll want to stick around for the food. The jammy pickled eggs topped with fried shallots are the perfect little bite, and you’ll find yourself making another reservation before you leave just to order the vinegar-marinated roast chicken again. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but if you’re here during tomato season and don’t order the tomato vin with garlic cream cheese, you may want to reconsider your life choices." - anne cruz

The Great Shortage: Restaurants Struggle to Find Materials, Food, and, Most of All, Labor | Eater

"This small wine bar and restaurant in Hudson, New York is known for a loyal clientele attached to a signature mac and cheese that depends on a specific dried pasta; inconsistent deliveries during the pandemic left the kitchen with only a single box or the wrong brand, forcing the owner to remove the dish and explain the change to disappointed regulars. Like many small independents, the restaurant has been squeezed by vendors raising minimum orders, cutting delivery days, and increasing prices, which makes routine purchasing and profitability harder and pushes the owner to rely less on large distributors and to hope for steadier sourcing." - Elazar Sontag

Google
I am enchanted by this place each time I go. The service is down to earth and kind, and each server has amazing wine knowledge. The descriptions are approachable and fun and the recommendations are spot on. The food is interesting and delicious and seasonal. The environment is stunning and romantic. I can feel the philosophy and love poured into every aspect of this restaurant. Yall are truly amazing 🩷🩷

Google
Simply enough - the food here is great. On a deeper level, this restaurant is very special, and you can sense the lore behind every dish and wine selection. We were lucky enough to have one of the owners as a server, and they told us the (hilarious! incredible! and heartwarming) stories behind each thing we ordered, from the shrimp cocktail to the burger to the chilled red wine. I am still thinking about the special cavatelli with charred asparagus and frizzled onions! I wish I could eat here every week but I will have to settle for planning to eat here every time I am back in Kingston.

Cute restaurant, nice waiter, and delicious food! The strip steak dish was the home runner, so so tender, delicious. The salad was also very good!

Google
I will begin by saying I ended up getting a tube of their brown honey butter to go, and would have taken a whole loaf of bread if they were selling it that night (they sadly weren’t). It was the highlight of our meal. We also got some great tater tots and green salad as sides. We shared the mixed grill lamb plate which was good but we felt the sausages were a bit of a miss. We saw the half chicken on the table next to us and wished we had gotten that instead! Brownie dessert was decadent and very good. Would love to come back for the rest of the menu!

Google
This restaurant is super yummy, friendly, and honest, and a must for anyone visiting Kingston. It offers very reasonable prices for the excellent quality, a great happy hour for fantastic wine, and an incredibly friendly atmosphere! I feel super comfortable eating alone here and just drawing away. <3

Google
This was one of the absolute best meals we’ve had in a very long time. The menu looked compelling, and we were not disappointed. The starters were all extremely flavorful and surprising (jammy eggs, pickled veggies and the bread were all to die for). The pork was recommended and was impressive. The cranberries really created a wonderful layering of flavor, but for me, the chicken was the star. This was the most moist, flavorful chicken I think I’ve ever had. I would eat this chicken every day if I could. The service was great too. Staff was polite and friendly and gave great recommendations when we asked what was good. The vibe was easy and cool on a slow night. It was like the most super elevated bar food I’ve ever had in a chill bar/restaurant that’s not overly pretentious. Great for a nice cozy cold evening in Kingston. Loved it.

Google
My favorite restaurant on my weekend trip to Kingston. The vibes were immaculate from start to finish. We sat at the bar and the servers were very attentive, they guided us through their recommendations on their unique wine list and we were very happy with the choices. The food was phenomenal. For starters we had the pickled eggs and bread; the pickled eggs stole the show and are now my favorite take on deviled eggs. For entrees we ate the doctor pepper steak & the spring risotto; big portions and extremely flavorful. What strikes me the most is how you can taste how fresh the ingredients are and how masterful the chef is in mixing unique ingredients together to create such complexity in the dishes. As an NYC resident that has eaten at some of the top restaurants, I will say that sonder is of that ilk. 5 stars.

Wow is this place good! Apologies for the flash photography: dining room was dark. Four of us had a spectacular meal at Sonder Kingston this past Saturday, 8/24. We ordered most of the menu, and it was all fabulous. The executive chef/owner is the former chef of the private dining room at Eleven Madison Park. He and his chef de cuisine Hylan are firing on all cylinders. Standouts were: -shrimp skewers -golden beets (w/local honey, farmers cheese, pretzel crumble) -house sesame bread with garlic scape butter and browned honey butter -pickle plate -tomato salad -pickled jammy eggs (the best deviled eggs I’ve ever had) -gigante beans in a lemony broth -grass-fed lamb lollipop chops -dry-aged flank steak ...honestly, all of the food was incredibly creative and delicious. The service is attentive and knowledgeable about the food and wine. Front dining room has a cozy, rustic vibe, while the spacious backyard outdoor dining area has a crazy high pergola and a wood-fired pizza oven, not in use yet. Cannot wait to get back!

Yelp
How unfortunate that we left so disappointed by our group dinner at sonder. Given the seasonal menu we couldnt look ahead of time but there were minimal vegetarian options, the only entree option at our visit was "brothy beans" instead I ended up with an appetizer salad and a side of tator tots. My salad was tasty and my tots were tots. Menu was a bit confusing to me- entrees are upscale and priced accordingly but some others kind of bar-ish and less refined. The $12 burger looked like a McDonalds burger served on a side plate. A lot of wine options were out of stock and were also very pricey for what was offered. I had high hopes reading others reviews but I don't think I'd be back as for me the cost and quality felt misaligned

Yelp
Ate here today for dinner with my family after going to my cousin's graduation in CIA. We had shared different kinds of dishes together as a family. Overall, it had tasted super good and delicious. We couldn't agree more. The service there was also attentive and friendly. We definitely had a great time and couldn't agree more. Finally, I would definitely eat and come back again next time! :)

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in the whole country. Stumbled upon this gem and have been back at least 5 times since, try to make it in every time we're in the area from the city. Inventive recipes, fun and friendly service and perfect mix of casual or fine dining ambience inside depending what you're into.

Yelp
Had a really nice night at Sonder! My family and I came up here to see my cousin play a show. But first, food and drink! We ordered some of the vegetarian appetizers to start (broccoli and squash) and for entrees we all ordered burgers. The veggie, garlic burger, and Sonder burgers to be exact. They were very good! For drinks, the rosé and red wines were a great choice. The music ended up taking place outside in their back patio area. Very nice set up! The weather was perfect too!

Yelp
This lower Midtown Kingston spot satisfies every time. The limited menu of small plates and hearty entrees is supplemented by Chef specials. Everything on the menu is worth trying, though favorites draw us back every time. The wine is well-curated, organic, natural and consistently good. We usually let the server pick for us! Never disappointing. The indoor space is intimate without being stuffy. The beautiful garden area created in the back is a surprise and really nice (though even better in warmer weather). Reserve early or visit on a day other than Friday or Saturday for a better chance of getting the table you want.

Yelp
I was really shocked to see so many good reviews. I went last night and the only thing that felt "high dining" was the prices. I would think the wait staff would be knowledgeable about wine being that it is a wine bar but she didn't even know what they had in stock, which was very little since they said they ran out of most things on New Year's Eve. They also didn't have beer available except miller high life. It kind of felt like the restaurant wasn't sure what it wanted to be, offering basic bar eats tots and fries at a very reasonable price but wine starting at 70 a bottle and entrees around 45-55. Nothing we ate was that great and overall just felt like the trendy ambiance was their biggest concern.

Yelp
I went here a few months ago with my friends and we still talk about the meal we had at Sonder. Truly one of the best meals I've ever had. Once I move out to the suburbs from Manhattan and have a car, I will definitely drive here to have dinner again. The team here is top notch and the service I received is better than most restaurants I've been to, even the Michelin starred ones. I would not be surprised if they do get a Michelin star in the future.

Yelp
Very cute and romantic place ! I love the whole ambiance inside. The food was good, and service was good and I loved the wines !

Yelp
Ten ten tens, across the board. Don't let the surrounding area fool you. Sonder is sexy, fun and a vibe. We ordered the olives, whitefish toast, gem salad, risotto and desserts. Everything was spectacular. Do keep in mind that you can not make modifications but you can remove an ingredient off. Can't recommend Sonder enough and will definitely return!

Yelp
Review for Sonder's : Here I sit, longingly reminiscing about a meal I ate with my friends nearly two months ago.The five of us had just emerged from a gorgeous and exhilarating fall day at the NY Sheep and Wool Festival. We were ravenous, eager and apprehensive as we entered Sonder Wine Bar, a recommendation we had gotten from a stranger. Could we trust our source? We arrived just before doors opened for the evening and were happily greeted by Amelia. From the delicious Portuguese wine that she graciously let us sample (before we bit off on a whole bottle or two), to the scrumptious Chocolate Brownie dessert, the kitchen at Sonder was knocking it out of the park. The following are just a few suggestions from our evening at Sonder: The Zata'ar Bread with Parsnip Butter will bring you right to your knees. Trust me when I say you'll be wondering if you could successfully duplicate this at home. The Brothy Beans won't let you down either as they are perfectly comforting and balanced. The Sonder Burger is simply unmatched with its juiciness and complex flavors. Sonder Wine Bar is NOT to be missed! If I were in close proximity, I would eat there at least once a month. Alas, as I live 500 miles away and am left to only reminisce, until next time. To Dan and Amelia, thank you for a most memorable meal with my friends. See you next October, without a doubt!! Best, Sheila Conboy

Yelp
I am not sure if this was an off night or what because reviews are generally good for this restaurant but this was a pretty bad dining experience. Nothing seemed to be going right logistically. On multiple counts our waiter indicated he could only give part of our party plates / silverware because stuff was still running in the dishwasher, the menus we were given were dirty (I guess there was a printer jam?), half our table received wine glasses for the bottle we ordered and the other half were given tasting glasses with a logo on them, like the ones that wineries give out for free... We had the "corner table" which was an unnecessarily wide farm table which blocked a walkway so when people needed to pass we had to get up on multiple counts (this really should be replaced with a standard width table) and the door to the patio kept getting left open so we were freezing. As far as food, I didn't enjoy my meal - it was the steak which had a VERY salty charred substance on it that I scraped off to eat it and it came with cold cauliflower salad (intentional I understand but very odd to have hot steak on a plate with a cold salad). Then for dessert we wanted a couple brownies for the table but we were told they only had one left but they could make us some if we were willing to wait 20min. Just an overall mildly chaotic experience which was very surprising given where the Owner and Chef has worked (eg Eleven Madison Park and Le Bernardin)

Yelp
Amazing little spot. Reminds me in the best way of a new modern wine bar in Paris. Great natural wines available by bottle and glass. Always rotating the selection. Small plates are unique and creative and use seasonally local fresh ingredients with a focus in vegetables. And I love the ambiance too! The outdoor area will be a great spot to hang in the nice weather. I wish I lived closer I would be there more often.

Yelp
Cute wine bar in Kingston! They had a huge selection of wines and asked for a recommendation and it was awesome. They have happy hour from 5-7pm and glasses of wine are $7 which was a huge savings! Food was also delicious! We tried the mushroom toast, ham and cheese toasty, mimonette, and bread with butter. All were so good and can't wait to come back They have vegan options and indoor/outdoor seating. We sat outside because it was such a beautiful day

Yelp
Fantastic wine bar and great bites. We ordered half the menu, and loved everything. From the brothy beans to the gem salad- everything was super fresh and a perfect size for two to share. Our server's wine recommendations were also great (love the descriptions). Well worth a night out and will head back soon to try and eat everything else on the menu!

Yelp
Came here with a small group early in the summer but didn't have the same experience as other Yelpers. Yes, the spot is a quirky outlier on its block, but our experience itself had more prominent quirks. We sat outside near dusk at a table in the center of their outside concrete patio. By the end of the night, it felt like the center of an impressive ant colony. While the service was friendly and informal, it was hard to make sense of the plates for the price without asking a lot of questions of the menu. Some plates were exceptionally small and others exceptionally large, none of them were particularly revelatory. The most memorable, or perhaps symbolic, dish was the Sonder Burger, which came as this sad, sopping piece of meat, sitting small on a large plate with no sides. It would be hard to justify returning for inexpensive wine alone.

Yelp
Came here on an early Monday night for friends and family. They have an incredible happy hour from 5-7 (i believe) with 20% off bottles of wine and discounted glasses. What else could you want?! Well, the food is also very strong. We had the risotto, which was great. Also nibbled on some olives, salads and bread. 10-10-10- across the board. Romantic vibes, as well.

Jeanne L.

Yelp
astounding. astonishing. I love the artistry of the chefs. Recently I had a dish that was pure bliss and was disappointed when I saw it had rotated off with a new dish in its place. But disappointment turned to rapture; what i thought was impossible to top - they topped! Unbelievable. The atmosphere is lovely. The only downside is that they have me so spoiled that I can't eat anywhere else in Kingston.

Kris G.

Yelp
Excellent food, unique choices, very cool atmosphere. A true gem, and something different. Will definitely be returning.

Yelp
The best foodie restaurant in the Catskills. Bar none! The food....omg....creative, original, tasty, to die for. Service to good and accommodating. You want something original and delicious? If you go to only one restaurant in the area, make it Sonder.

Michelle S.

Yelp
Everything was amazing: food, atmosphere, wine and service. Sat at the bar because we didn't have a reservation on a Friday night but it was intimate and cute!

lillian l.

Yelp
Great selection of natural wines with quirky descriptions, fun atmosphere and delicious food. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Super low key delicious wine bar in Kingston. Strolled in with no reservations on a Wednesday evening and were seated. Sat out back in their patio. Had an awesome waitress who recommend the perfect white. Food was out of this world delicious. Perfect portion sizing and faire for a warm, almost summer evening. Chef is a CIA grad and it shows how much time and effort they put into sourcing local, preparing and pickling. Excited to go back on a hot summer say and enjoy. Got their last burger of the night and it was delicious. Brought me back to a summer BBQ in middle school in all the best ways. Nostalgic, perfectly cooked.... delicious.
google avatar

Tess D.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food. Everything on the menu looked good and enjoyed everything we ordered. Seasonal and tasty.

Rebecca L.

Yelp
Want a great wine list (without an hour-long wait for a seat)? Come here. Want a yummy little snack with your wine? Even better! I wouldn't call Sonder a hidden gem, but perhaps an undersung highlight of Kingston in general and midtown in particular.
google avatar

HELEN A.

Yelp
If you haven't checked out this place, drop what you're doing and go there. The food, in particular, is extremely good -- inventive, delicious, a little bit quirky. Sure, it's in probably the least attractive stretch of Broadway, loomed over by hospital buildings, but that just adds to the sense of discovery. The atmosphere is super-chill and thoughtfully lit (not a given in this small town!), giving it an intimate yet friendly feel. The somewhat over-stretched staff are extremely charming and helpful. It's enough to make one lament the demise of Elephant and Wildebeest just that little bit less.

Hélène L.

Yelp
Dark, swanky interior makes for a good backdrop to the flavors in their delicious small plates. Be forewarned though, all their wine is served chilled because it's natural wine.
google avatar

Ariel R.

Yelp
What a gem! Not only was each dish fantastic - the perfectly dressed gem salad, wildly delicious pickled egg, light and delicious crab and peas were standouts - the wine selection is also well curated. And add the banoffee dessert to the list of must-tries. Plus they're dog friendly! Lovely patio to boot.

Dana C.

Yelp
what a great find! the food was fantastic as was the staff. get the beet salad and the shrimp skewers. so far my fave restaurant in kingston. we just moved here..

Yelp
What a wonderful evening. We are on the back patio and it was great to be outside. Our waitress couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. Highly recommend the pickled jammy eggs and the tofu. Nice selection of wine and the ones we tried were perfect.

David Y.

Yelp
Walked in on a Mon might after long day. 3 people seemed to be working and noone barely gave us any attention while we waited. Grabbed a spot at the bar after noone attempted to seat us. Waitress ignored us and served the guy next to us quickly but never brought us water or even acknowledged us. Definitely on purpose. The staff seemed very disorganized and slow as hell. Other patrons also had barely any service as several had empty water glasses as well and looked impatient. Prob worst no service I've ever had. After 25 minutes of being ignored we left and went to a place who wanted our money.

B W.

Yelp
The decor is eccentric and the ambiance cozy, wine and food are delicious, amazing staff who lets you try anything you are curious about. It's a great neighborhood hang out spot, do not miss if you're in the area!

Genie R.

Yelp
Eclectic and cute... probably cuter at nite with the candles and lights..food was really good.. wine good but skimpy...we sat all the way in the front of the store and could barely hear our conversation because the whole nite there was a loud electric saw.. we asked the waitress what that was and she said they were doing construction to expand the area ...it was extremely loud and never stopped... that and the horrible music made for not so pleasant a night...silly to run construction equipment in a Friday night prime time..no?

Pierre D.

Yelp
What a lovely and fantastic little restaurant with excellent service. Everything was amazing, with their unique mix of flavor. From the pickled eggs to the gem salad, to the braised beans, to finish with the banofee for dessert. There is also a lovely little garden in the back. Highly recommend if you are in the Kingston area

Lisa G.

Yelp
Delicious birthday dinner on the outdoor space of this lovely spot. Enjoyed the ambience and decor -- truly a chic neighborhood feel -- the wine selection and the various plates. The menu changes often, reflecting the bounty of the Hudson Valley and the chef's talent and creativity. Can't wait to return.

Ryan C.

Yelp
Easily one of the worst restaurants i've ever been to. It's obvious the owner took a trip into the city to a trendy natural wine bar and failed terribly to recreate that in Kingston. What is with the decor? It's cold, the music is extremely quiet and the disco ball contrasting with the dripping wax candles makes zero sense. Are you blind? It's almost insulting. Waitress couldn't care less about serving us, uninviting and cold, like the decor. Now the food, it's usually pretty hard to mess up bread and butter but somehow the bread was undercooked. Wet, soggy and doughy on the inside, really unpleasant. I ordered the chicken breast, and shocked to cut into it to find the inside was completely raw. Not just undercooked, but translucent pink and cold. I like that you're sourcing ingredients from local suppliers and trying to bring finer dining to the area, but for the love of god do better. Harness some of that effort into your quality control on the line and in the kitchen. Serving raw chicken breast concerns me for the rest of the food safety in the kitchen, can't imagine what your walk-in looks like. Do better
