Songbird - Review - South Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"Parked at Meanwhile Brewing, Songbird is a food trailer specializing in fried chicken sandwiches. The lineup includes everything from more classic sandwiches (served with pickles, ranch, lettuce, and Texas toast) to a General Tso-inspired one, complete with broccolini and pickled chilis. And if you’re not feeling chicken, there are a few other items on the menu, like burgers, bologna sandwiches, and salads." - Nicolai McCrary

Google
A great food truck serving smashed burgers, chicken sandwich, regular and Nashville style, with their version of great fries as well as popcorn chicken. Have ordered a couple of times, the smashed burger and Nashville chicken sando are great value and tastes amazing. Everything to perfection, the heat, the taste and the freshness. I was a bit disappointed at their popcorn chicken and fries poutine, felt it was off and not good value for money, $2-3 dollars overpriced for the quality and taste. But I would definitely recommend the Smashburger and the Nashville Chicken Sandwich. Great job with both of those.

Google
Food was really unique and quite good. And love the outdoors family friendly atmosphere. But quite expensive. 18.50 for a sandwich and small side of Fry's

Absolutely blew us away! Songbird is hands-down serving one of the best chicken sandwiches I’ve ever tasted — perfectly crispy, juicy, and packed with flavor. The sauce was unreal and took it over the top. Service was fast and friendly, the kids loved every minute, and the laid-back atmosphere made it such a fun spot to hang out. The manager was super helpful and answered all our questions- and Ian was also going through all the sauces. Highly recommend — can’t wait to come back!

Google
Great chicken sandwich and I am a fan of the potato wedge like fries!! I think on my sandwich it could’ve used an extra minute in the fryer to crisp it up more - or maybe the steam to go softened it. Either way, I enjoyed the sandwich and loaded fries. Guy at the front taking orders was awesome and had great customer service. Thanks!

Google
Okay okay, I received an extremely cold sandwich after waiting almost 15 min for it at ~$14 after tax + tip with No sides.. I expected a lot higher standards for that price of course.. $14 for cold chicken sandwich is terrible when lower quality places like Chick Fil A and raising canes are consistently HOT But The ingredients felt high quality still, and the lime ranch and pickles were excellent and the toasted bun too. It was just so cold. I’m giving them a 3 as that’s pretty unacceptable, but I do think it’d be a 4-5 star sandwich if the quality control was on point. I would rate much lower if quality and service were lacking I’m not sure if I would give them another try at that price tag and gamble it, but will update for sure if I do to reflect hopefully a “one-off” experience I got the original chicken sandwich Parking is hit or miss up close, but I’ve never not been able to find a spot after a few min. Meanwhile brewing is an awesome place to hang out, between live bands, games on big screen, and mini farmer style markets it’s always different It’s next door to the best ice cream in Austin = Besame, and possibly a much wider range as well if we’re honest Service was on-point at counter, very friendly staff

Google
SO delicious!! And the staff were so kind. Absolutely can't wait to order their chicken sandwich again.... And their fries... And the beer cheese 😆👏🏻 We already love meanwhile and it's taken us a while to get around to each food truck... But we highly recommend this one if you're in any mood for chicken!!

Google
Place likes to change their menu which is great and all, but if you aren't consistent then what is the point? Had a great regular chicken sandwich my last time. But got the Korean chicken sandwich this time and it was so salty I stopped eating it at the end. Both the brine and breading was too heavily salted. Not to mention the kimchi slaw lacked kimchi flavor and was kinda a wash. Please focus on the flavors because the fry is good just hone in on the balance of the flavors! We also got the $19 burger. Definitely not worth it, the caramelized onions barely had any flavor.

Google
The food truck at Meanwhile brewery among other food trucks. I always wanted to try Nashville Hot chicken sandwich and it came out good. I was expecting bit more hot in taste so I was given the Extra hot sauce :) The combination was just perfect. Next, I will try the fries when I come back. The staff is very friendly and the overall vibe is amazing.

Yelp
We were looking for something to eat at Meanwhile Brewing and found this place. We are l so glad we did! The burger satisfied my appetite. The potatoes were perfectly crispy. We will definitely be having Songbird again!

Yelp
Not bad, but nothing to write home about in my experience. I had one of their specials for the day which was supposed to be a really hot chicken sandwich. We were warned that it was crazy hot and I took that as a personal challenge because I love hot food so I was disappointed to find it wasn't that spicy (maybe 3 out of 5 spicy) but that's just a personal thing --I'm sure someone else would've found it hot enough. The bread was yummy and the chicken is great quality, too. So, it was still a pleasant experience. Would I go back again? Only if there weren't other options. But I say try it out and see for yourself!

Yelp
The chicken sandwiches at this food truck are the bomb!! But what's really outstanding are the fries. I can't wait to go back and try the loaded fries. Best fries I've ever had!!

Yelp
Giving Spicy Boys a run for their money! Songbird offers a solid selection of sandwiches and burgers, but both my gf and I were drawn to the Handle with Kare, which is basically Japanese curry with a crispy chicken thigh on Texas toast. Delicious! The Texas toast for me is a new thing. It definitely adds to the show but steals a bit more of the limelight than it deserves. Flavors were good, crunch was good. I would certainly order it again, but not before trying their burger options. They look delectable! Great food truck if you're looking for something hearty but not too heavy. Frontman was super duper nice. Actually everyone was great. Will be back.

Yelp
Ordered the kids burger with cheese. Burger was good sized! My sister ordered the deluxe and she loved it. We would definitely order again! Thank you!

Yelp
I'm going to be totally honest with you, I ordered online to-go from here because I was picking up a limited drop pint from Besame's trailer. That being said, it did not disappoint, so I'm glad I took a chance on trying something new yesterday. I played it safe with a patty melt and a side of fries. Turns out, I didn't need the fries because the sandwich was very filling. They use a thicker bread similar to Texas toast, but not quite it. Even though I took my meal (8 mins) home, the griddling of the bread retained a crunch for the first bite. The pickles on the sandwich were also on the thicker side but had a sweet-spicy tang to them to help cut through the sauce and burger patty. I'd like to say I savored it, but it was consumed in under 5 minutes. Do you love potatoes? Have you heard of Sidewinder fries? This is the only place I've seen them in Austin. The only other place I'd seen having them on the menu was at a po'boy joint in New Orleans. It's almost as if a steak fry and seasoned curly fries had a baby. Great for dunking in ketchup and I'd imagine great as a base for loaded fries. The guy working the trailer was super nice. When I let him know it was my first time trying their food, he let me know they just got there about 3 months ago. They're in the middle of having the trailer painted by an artist, so don't judge a book by its cover here. Also, had I known this was a chicken sandwich trailer, I'd have gone that route, but I'll save that for the next time I'm at Meanwhile.

Yelp
Songbird is an interesting new food truck that opened at Meanwhile Brewing, one of my favs. I say interesting because the menu is familiar with old school Americana favorites yet varied with Asian flavor additions like the General, a General Tso's style chicken sandwich. Songbird's mainstays are sandwiches, salads, bowls and appetizers. I was prepared to get a sandwich the last time I was there but then the special they had that day I couldn't resist, an Asian style popcorn chicken with soy sauce soft boiled egg. It's funny cause the neighboring Besame ice cream food truck is one I also love but have rarely tried the staple menu items and always opt for the specials, making me feel like I'll trend that way with Songbird as well. But I am excited to try more of the menu. UPDATE: Just came back today and was planning on getting something from the regular menu but yet again, the Specials menu steered me away. I got the Short Rib Banh Mi and it was very good. The short rib was full of flavor, fork tender, with some much needed tartness of the cilantro, and pickled daikon and carrot to balance out the richness.

Yelp
We tried this food truck the other while at Meanwhile Brewing and it didn't disappoint. Our kids usually go for the Side Eye cheese pizza but that day one of our sons wanted a grilled cheese. We ordered that along with fries and glad we did. The grilled cheese was American on sourdough Texas toast looking bread and still crunchy when we finally got my son to eat after soccer. The real star that day was the fries though. They were huge and flavorful. Menu says they are fried in wagyu beef tallow. If we ever go back without the kids I would order some fries to munch on because they were plentiful and packed with flavor. I should've taken a picture but I will next time. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Ordering was very easy through the website and the food was ready fairly quickly, maybe within 15 min or so. I ordered the handle with kare, basically fried chicken with Japanese curry in a sandwich. I love Japanese curry so I was naturally drawn to this. While the sandwich was tasty, it wasn't something I'd say I need to go back and have again. The location at meanwhile brewing however, is great!

Yelp
The sandos were AMAZING. We tried the General and the Handle with Karé along with the El Chingon (I think that's what it was called) fries special. Delicious Asian fusion sandwiches. They might be better than Spicy Boys, but don't tell them I said that. The only negative is was it took 30+ minutes to get the food, and the fries were cold by that time. I don't know if it was because the ordering system didn't let us know our food was ready or what, but the sandwiches were 5 star +! We will be back!

Yelp
I like big sandwiches and I cannot lie - had a Deluxe....finest burger I've had in five years (my memory recycles every 5 years .... It's a space thing). Bottom line/TLDR - if you find yourself at Meanwhile, find yourself at Songbird.
google avatar

Yelp
Not even close to Spicy Boys. The batter had a burnt taste and the grilled bun was burnt. The fries are really potato wedges. That's fine if you like them that way but they are not fries. Spicy pickles were awesome!

Yelp
I can not see this food truck lasting, even with it's prime location. We ordered a BLT salad to share and it was almost $20 with a tip. The salad was awful and terribly small. There was just a few pieces of lettuce, a couple tomatoes (they were good), croutons that were hard as a rock, and cheap quality burnt bacon. Just all around disappointing. Definitely the worst $20 I ever spent at Meanwhile. The last food truck in that location was bad that sold Banh Mis but this is worse. Stick to Distant Relative, Pueblo Viejo, and Side Eye. They are all fantastic!

Yelp
Best. Chicken sandwich. Ever!! The General?! I have to go back to Meanwhile as soon as possible to get another one! The fried chicken is so crispy and tender in the middle, tso sauce is flavorful and pickled chilis is the perfect touch! The hot porker also looked amazing and I will definitely be trying that next time I'm there. The food paired with a few meanwhile beers out in the sun made for the perfect weekend afternoon. Dog friendly too!

Yelp
Very solid food. The crispy shishitos and fries weren't anything special but the fried bologna was

Yelp
TLDR: terrible service, never refunded me when they ran out of the food i ordered. I think the truck was just a few weeks open when my family and i visited. Line was very long but we were excited to try it. Our food took very long which was not ideal for us with small kids in tow. I would have looked past the 45+ minute wait but when i went to pick up my order one of the items we were looking forward to was sold out. They apologized and I expected to be refunded the $18. It's only fair, i didn't receive the order i placed. They wanted to replace it with a cheaper food item that i had already ordered and i wasn't interested. When i asked for a refund they said they would do it when the line slowed down. Totally understandable. Except they never did. I called and wrote them messages to remind them and they ignored me. Just bad business and unfair. Times are tough for everyone so just was not cool.

Yelp
i miss the banh mi truck that used to be in their spot. songbird's sandwiches are overpriced for what they are. i tried their blackened chicken sandwich and it wasn't good. too much sauce and the chicken was bland. their sidewinder fries were delicious but you had to order it separately. i think i'll stick to the other food trucks next time at meanwhile.

Yelp
It's not every day that you come across a food truck that impresses you to the core, but Songbird has managed to do just that. One of the standout features of Songbird's culinary delights is their use of tallow for frying. The rich, savory flavors imparted by the tallow elevate their dishes to an entirely new level. This old-fashioned frying method not only makes the food taste better, but it also adds a touch of authenticity to the dining experience. I will definitely be returning for more delightful dishes and can't wait to see what new culinary creations await at this gem of a food truck.

Yelp
If you are looking for an amazing chicken sandwich, this is the spot! I've eaten here twice now and both times have been delicious. The milk toast bread with the crispy juicy chicken is a winner winner chicken dinner!

Cheryl J.

Yelp
I tried the classic chicken sandwich and it was really great. The chicken was deliciously crispy on the outside, while the inside was juicy. I'll be back to try more items. Pairs well with a good Meanwhile beer on a beautiful afternoon relaxing outside.

Jack S.

Yelp
I heard good things, but I don't get it. Overpriced sandwich on Texas toast. They give you the fries when you order and they are cold when you finally get the sandwich, if they remember to text you. Not good value.

Sophya E.

Yelp
Pretty disappointed for $35 the curry chicken sandwich was horrible the curry was bitter and half the sandwich was just burnt chicken coating. The burger patty was so thin and small. The bread slices were double the size of the patty and there was two of them. For a $17 burger it was very disappointing and unsatisfying. The best part was the fries and the beer cheese. So skip the overpriced sandwiches and just got for some fries with beer cheese.

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
One of the best food trucks in town! It's not your average chicken sandwich truck. Get the general tso
