Best Cheesesteaks in Philly, the Home of the Iconic Sandwich | Eater Philly

"Sure, Sonny’s is a bit cleaner-looking than many of the other shops on this list. But it’s just as authentically Philly. The friendly service, a great product, and manageable lines make Sonny’s Famous Steaks a solid choice for an Old City lunch. Grab a seat on the sidewalk out front or order takeout or delivery online." - Annemarie Dooling

"Meet the neighborhood's cheesesteak destination. Every sandwich comes with thick cuts of ribeye layered on their long rolls. Cheese options include american, whiz, mozzarella, and even blue (don't you dare). Go provolone so you can get that extra sharp flavor. " - candis mclean, alison kessler

Best Restaurants in Philadelphia’s Historic District | Eater Philly

"If a cheesesteak is an absolute must, check out the friendly Sonny’s Famous Steaks, which has garnered its fair share of national accolades for sandwiches stuffed with rib-eye and Whiz. Another good Old City option for any Philly cheesesteak collector is Campo’s, whose Heater sandwich is a popular spicy take on the classic. The longstanding shop also offers several vegan items." - Diana Lu

Sonny's Famous Steaks - Review - Old City - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Sonny’s in Old City is a place that you can walk into for a casual lunch and eat a cheesesteak with thick cuts of ribeye that come layered on their long rolls. The cheese options are american, whiz, mozzarella, and even blue, but you should go with provolone so you can get that extra sharp flavor. Plus, we’re pretty sure a cheesesteak with blue cheese crumbles is the quickest way to get a “Are You Even From Here” trophy." - Candis R. McLean

Google
I think Sonny's is famous because they tell everyone it is ! When you're running an old established and apparently iconic fast food store, it would be good if it was looked after and well managed. It did help having the strong smell of 'weed' outside and a few stoned guys milling around. Adrian, seemed to begrudgingly take my order with the absolute bare minimum of conversation, total lack of assistance and plenty of apathy! It wasn't busy, however, the store had full bins, stacked empty bread trays in the corner and dirty tables, the place did not give a hygienic appearance with its retro look ! The 'famous' cheese steak sandwich was nothing special although it did taste fresh. Overall, a disappointing experience not to be repeated in my opinion and I would not take children there !!

Google
Narrow restaurant with limited seating inside. Line moved quickly and the smell of grilled meat and onions made us hungry. Ordered Sonny’s loaded cheesesteak with onions mushrooms and peppers with onion rings and fries. The sandwich was stuffed with meat and the provolone was gooey. Excellent sandwich and the rings were thick and crispy My wife got the gluten free bun and it was excellent. Highly recommended. We took our sandwiches to a nearby park to eat lunch. My daughter shared her pictures with me for this post

Google
Delicious!! One sandwich and fries fed 2 of us. Free refills on Soda. We were told THIS is the best place to get a Philly cheesesteak even though others claim to be. My sources were not wrong!!

Google
Great spot for a cheesesteak that’s close to independence hall and liberty bell. What I enjoyed - great atmosphere, great location, great service and friendly staff, steak cooked well done, great rolls, reasonable price. What may need work - due to steak being well done (which I like) it made the cheesesteak quite dry. I recommend more cheese to help with that (we prefer Cooper Sharp). Overall happy with our experience and food. Will be back again but will order extra cheese.

Google
Sonny’s is a great cheese steak. It just isn’t as good as some others I had. I can’t give it 5 stars because others are better. If you’re in the area and this is closer go here it’s great. If in Philly and wanting to try several cheese steaks don’t miss this one…

Google
This was my first meal after being abroad for about a month and also my first meal as a grown adult in Philadelphia. It definitely reset me back to the American palate 😂 - honored the fundamentals and tasted great! I am in town for a wedding but decided to arrive early to work through the couple's recommended eats because (why not).

Google
Overall it was a nice experience, it is what you would expect. The Philly Cheesesteak was delicious, yet didn't give me the "oh my god" feel - that, yet, is taste though. That's just my and our opinion we had.

Google
I’ve tried a couple places serving cheese steak sándwiches and I can confidently say the one I tried here is very solid. Meat was super juicy and tender. I ordered fully loaded with onions, mushrooms and sweet peppers… Cero regrets. Absolutely loved it. Loved the place branding and decor. Very on point with the Old City area where it is.

Yelp
First time eating a Philly cheesesteak so I wasn't sure what to expect! I appreciated that the bread was crispy with a nice crust, the ratio of cheese (I got provolone) to meat was perfect. I kind of expected the meat to be super oily, but to my relief it wasn't; however I would've liked some sort of sauce or gravy to make it more flavorful. Fast casual environment that seems to be busy but especially packed during peak hours!

Yelp
LONG STORY SHORT: Go to 'OH BROTHER' instead! Walked in, 1:30pm on a Tuesday (Election Day). The place is dead no line, only a few customers in the back sitting. It's kinda dark, all the grills look off and empty, nothing sizzling, doesn't even smell like cheesesteak. Menu is mostly covered up by cheesesteak wrappers. I ask the guy at the grill if they're even open- no response. I walk up to the cashier where you order and say "Hey" The guy there steps up to the register and makes a a grunt noise, but literally does not look up from his phone. I turned around and left. Dunno what the heck is going on with this place, but with literally two other places to get cheesesteaks from next door, they are out of their minds to be this awful during a weekday at lunchtime. Their steaks were mid to begin with, I'm 100% fine with never setting foot inside again.

Yelp
The cheesesteaks are awesome, very flavorful great meat to cheese ratio, I was able to bust it down without having a drink . Ordered it through the app and it was ready by the time I found parking

Yelp
Always make our cheesesteak stops as we visit Philly annually. This time we were able to try Sonny's and it held up well with the best of them. Nice busy spot serving great cheesesteaks with all the ooey and gooey ness that's makes a great Philly cheesesteak with the right bread! French fries are a great addition to the meal and better than most places if not the best. Lots of seating inside and outside with also bar top standing area to eat as well.

Yelp
Came in at 1:20 pm on a Tuesday afternoon. Not busy. Ordered a mushroom cheese steak. Very good, bread is great. My wife and I could have split one. As good as Dalessandro's.

Yelp
Trying out this place for the first time after trying Oh Brothers next door. I Ordered their bacon cheesesteak and their onion rings on a busy Sunday night. I m NOT a fan. Their roll was kind of dry and chewy unlike Oh Brother, the presentation was kind of sloppy, unlike Oh Brother, they make your food looks good and smells good. And They didn't even offer ranch sauce for my onion rings, UNLIKE Oh Brother!!! This place was packed when I walked in but unfortunately I will stick with Oh Brother from now on. I m from CA, was in town for the Philly marathon.
google avatar

Henry P.

Yelp
The cheesesteak was unfortunately pretty dry and a little bland. The cheese fries were also pretty disappointing, lacking salt and covered with a very small amount of cheese. It looked much better than it tasted sadly.
google avatar

Travis S.

Yelp
Solid. Trying every single cheesesteak in town while I'm here. Quick. No line. 4pm. Tuesday. Grab and go. Wit wiz. Good people nice place.

Yelp
Introduced by a local friend. Love this place. great cheesesteak and fries. A traveller's must.

Yelp
A quick walk from the liberty bell, independence hall, and other historic sites. Onion rings were crispy and fried to order. Loaded cheesesteak came with sweet peppers, mushrooms and onions with choice of cheese. Service was friendly and quick. There were tables inside and outside for dining.
google avatar

Jason M.

Yelp
Had a great meal here while catching the sites in the historical part of town. It's just 3 short blocks from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. If you are looking for an authentic Philly Cheese Steak experience, this is it. We had the works, which included sweet peppers, mushrooms and grilled onions. They have cheez-whiz or provolone, and they even have gluten free buns. Cash, card they take both. Limited seating inside but there is some seating outside as well. The staff was great and you will definitely enjoy your sandwich. Would eat here again for sure.

Yelp
i'm no philly cheesesteak expert but the one from sonny's is great! not greasy and quality is worth the price. a little crowded but worth it.

Yelp
We don't celebrate Mothers Day. Instead, we go to Philly to eat cheesesteaks at whatever supposedly famous shops are open on a Sunday, that aren't cash only. This is our second year of our new tradition, and we managed to try three new shops: Ishkibble's II, Sonny's, and Woodrow's. sadly, Sonny's just didn't measure up. The meat is cut large, and is tough. And they only put cheese on one side of the roll, so the sandwich is quite dry. In my overall scale, I would put Sonny's down with Pat's and Geno's. Places that I'm glad that I tried, because I want to try them all, but not one that I would recommend when there are so many other options. The restaurant has plenty of seating and a lovely atmosphere. Employees are kind and helpful. The quality of meat is my main issue. It's just too toothy.

Yelp
When you're in Philly, you have to try a Philly Cheesesteak! We found a highly-rated spot near Penn's Landing, right in the heart of historic Old City, Philadelphia. It's located on Market Street, about a 10-minute walk from the Hilton at Penn's Landing. The place was bustling, and the menu variety was impressive. They offer Philly cheesesteaks, burgers, and sides, and even have some vegetarian options like a grilled cheese sandwich. We decided to sample a few dishes and ordered the Original Cheesesteak, Loaded Cheesesteak, Bacon Cheesesteak, Cheez Fries, and Onion Rings. I was really impressed by the super-friendly service. The staff was awesome, despite being busy with orders. We even had a great conversation when I mentioned we were visiting from Seattle--really good people. As for the cheesesteaks--they were fantastic! I thought the Original was amazing until I tried the Loaded. I can't even put into words how flavorful it was, with the cheese adding so much to the experience. The portions were very filling, and they even have different types of pickled peppers available for customers. Most people overlook them, but don't make that mistake--they add a ton of flavor to the cheesesteaks. I've heard that Sonny's serves the best cheesesteaks in Philly, and I don't doubt that anymore. Solid cheesesteaks, amazing staff, and great vibes. Plus, if you're interested, you can pick up some Sonny's souvenirs as well.

Yelp
Ambiance: (5/5) Great indoor seating. Very clean and spacious. Price: (4/5) Prices are average for the area. Food: (4/5) I enjoyed the bacon cheesesteak, but it didn't wow me. There are a lot of good cheesesteaks in the area. I tried the Hawaiian burger which was really good. I liked that the pineapple was sizable, but I think it could have used some seasoning. The fries were very crispy. Honestly the best fries texture wise I have had in a long time. Service: (5/5) Food came out quick and the staff is very nice.

Yelp
Big fan of cheesesteak - the provolone was a bit light today, but still superb. With fries, the total was around $17 which is not too shabby! Next time, I'll try the cheese whiz next time! Sweet service and places to sit inside! Cheers!

Yelp
Excellent cheesesteak in a comfortable small shop with seating and a VERY nice staff. I headed to Sonny's with a friend in Philadelphia, i'd decided it was time to head out in search of a cheesesteak. It was one of those hot hot days in Philly, where it is in the high 90' and so humid, it feels like its 105 and walking anywhere feels overwhelming. Once we entered Sonny's though it was comfortable air conditioned and there was a cold water cooler with cups out for customers, YES! After a brief conversation with the counter guy, I went with a classic cheesesteak with mushrooms and my friend went with a burger. Our food came out within minutes and everything was great. My sandwich was so big and so packed, I was unable to eat more than half. The meat was fresh and I went with American cheese, which was honestly the perfect pairing for this sandwich.

Yelp
My husband and I had MANY cheesesteaks while we were in Philadelphia, and Sonny's was absolutely the best! The meat they use is so flavor and expertly chopped so you can easily take bites without stringy bits hanging on for dear life and not wanting to come with the bite. They use the classic Cheez Whiz topping style, and it works so well with their meat, it all just melts in your mouth. If you're in Philly and looking for a classic cheesesteak that doesn't skimp on flavor or quality, definitely make you're way over to Sonny's!

Yelp
Today is a Philly Cheesesteak foodie adventure for us. Our goal was to hit up 2 spots. First up, Dalessandro's. As we arrive we're like shhhh, we've been here before. The sandwiches were so forgettable that we don't remember if we liked it or not. We continue onto the next, Tony & Nick's Steaks. It was closed for July 4th. HANGRY at his point because it was way past our lunch time, Sonny's Famous Steaks came up on my Yelp app. The line is almost out the door, that's a good sign. We each ordered the Loaded Cheesesteak with sweet peppers, mushrooms, grilled onions and your choice of cheese (we chose provolone). Our verdict: the sliced beef could be juicier in our opinion. I would have liked more grilled onions. The bread was nice and soft. It was well seasoned. We also shared some fries and that was only okay. There are cherry peppers for your taking by the plastic utensils and napkins. If you like them tart where it will make your eyes squint, then these are for you. I guess it's good in cleansing the palate after eating one of these hoagies. This sandwich shop is located in the Old City part of Philly where you can walk around with lots to see and explore including some cool coffee shops. Excellent & friendly service. Restrooms: surprisingly nice and clean.

Yelp
Visited Philly and wanted to try the popular cheesesteak. Ordered it as loaded and topped with cheese whiz. Sandwich was quite filling so I shared it btw two people. Beef quality is good, not dry at all and very savory. Cheese whiz tasted like melted cheddar cheese on cheeseburger. Onions and vegetables helped balance sandwich out. I feel like it'll be better if the bread is lightly toasted, but overall a decent first experience; it does get boring after a couple of bites. Service was quick and friendly. Variety of indoor and outdoor seatings.

Yelp
My husband and I went on a day trip to Philly, and we were looking for a new place to try philly cheese steaks in the area. It's a small shop, but has plenty of seating if you want to eat in, and service was quick enough if you wanna pop in to grab and go. We ordered the cheesesteak topped with american cheese and grilled onions, to share. We were so excited to try their cheese steaks, but we were a bit disappointed. The sandwich had looked and smelled good, but parts of the bread were cold, the steak was a bit dry, and the cheese was not melted. Despite these things, the sandwich still had a good flavor.
google avatar

Yelp
This sandwich was massive! It was worth every bite and delicious! I am glad that my husband convinced me to walk the extra block to this place. When we arrived, it was not super crowded and they were quite literally cranking out the sandwiches. The young lady behind the counter was happy to answer any questions, and even offered some tips on how she likes to take her cheesesteak. I landed on the regular Philly with provolone. Hindsight is always 2020, I probably should have just gotten it the way it's supposed to be, but I digress. My sandwich was massive and it's pictured. It took me almost 20 minutes to eat the whole thing. I was determined it was delicious and I knew I most likely would not be eating again that day, this Sandwhich kept me full from 1pm until bedtime. This was a great treat after some sightseeing highly recommend this place. I also recommend going with patience , because as we were seated, the line pretty much started wrapping around the store. However, that's the sign of a great local spot to eat!

Yelp
Great food, fast service, and clean place. Steak was very tasty. Hubby got one with blue cheese so there's a selection. We enjoyed meeting some other tourists from Chicago. We all agreed out was a good place.
google avatar

Yelp
We had just gotten to our hotel after a long day of travel to move my daughter into Temple University. We got a recommendation to check out market Street and had the loaded cheesesteak and burger with fries. My daughter accidentally dropped the fries on the ground just as she got them, and was really upset because we were so hungry. The employees brought us another set of fries for free, even though I was gonna go buy another order. My daughter said the burger was absolutely delicious, the fries were thin, crunchy and delicious, my loaded cheesesteak was everything I wanted it to be, seasoned, melted, chewy, just delicious. Highly recommend and I will definitely be back when I come to visit my daughter in college!
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
Cute spot in the Old City area. No idea how this measures up against some of the other steak and cheese joints in Philly but we were total fans! The only thing we would do differently next time is order two for each of us because they were that delicious!
google avatar

Emma K.

Yelp
I will be the first to admit -- I am no cheesesteak connoisseur. But it's just some plain meat and cheese on a roll? The meat was dry and unflavorful. If this is the vibe then please correct me but i was unimpressed. The general restaurant was also loud with lots of people pushing in chairs and communal seating. As a tourist, it's an affordable, cheap, quick and easy spot. If that's what you're looking for this is the place for you! Pretty clean and the staff is nice. Overall no real complaints, just not the place for me.
google avatar

Maitina M.

Yelp
We came, we saw, we ate and we LOVED it!!! No frills, narrow and dated looking restaurant that was clearly popular based on the filled tables inside. You order at the counter, wait for your number to be called, grab your wrapped sandwiches, take a seat and enjoy! The steak sandwich is huge and delicious! The fries were topped with a generous amount of bacon and cheese. I'm so glad we gave this place a try. Two thumbs up!
google avatar

Gwendolyn W.

Yelp
We were looking for good cheesesteaks and this place was great! The bread and meat and cheese were good and they were a good size for the price. The fries and chicken were good too. My kids had wanted a grilled cheese and they said they were out which was confusing since they have bread and cheese. But besides that good.
google avatar

Lana S.

Yelp
We went to Sonny's as a recommendation from a friend of a friend. As I was walking in I saw a couple sitting outside with these massive onion rings. I told my husband to order us onion rings since they looked amazing (in addition to our cheese steaks ofcourse!). We ordered two cheesesteaks and some onions rings while I found us a table. The cheesesteaks were okay...it was kind of underwhelming and just bland. The onion rings however was really good! There are better cheesesteaks in the city for sure but the onion rings are solid.
google avatar

Yelp
If I could give Sonny's Cheesesteaks more stars, I would, but alas, five will have to do! Forget about any cheesesteak comparisons because Sonny's is in a league of its own, and it's all about that Philly flavor without any competition. First of all, stepping into Sonny's is like entering a cheesesteak paradise. The aroma hits you like a warm embrace, and your taste buds start doing a happy dance before you even take your first bite. Now, let's talk about the cheesesteak itself - an absolute masterpiece! The meat is tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. The cheese? I ordered Whiz; there's NO OTHER WAY! The roll? Soft and slightly crispy in all the right places. It's like a symphony of flavors and textures dancing in your mouth. But here's where Sonny's truly shines - their toppings and options. You want peppers? They got 'em. Mushrooms? Yep. Bacon? Oh, you better believe it. They've got a lineup of choices that will make your head spin (in a good way), and you can customize your cheesesteak to your heart's content. And the service? Well, let's just say the folks at Sonny's know how to treat their customers like family. You'll leave with a smile on your face and a cheesesteak craving that only Sonny's can satisfy. Now, I know some folks like to pit Sonny's against another famous Philly joint, but let me tell you, there's no comparison. Sonny's has my heart, and it's a love affair that's here to stay. The flavors, the variety, and the warm Philly spirit make Sonny's an absolute must-visit. So, if you're in the City of Brotherly Love and you're on a quest for the ultimate cheesesteak experience, look no further than Sonny's. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. It's the cheesesteak destination that dreams are made of.

Yelp
After a long day of sightseeing, we knew we had to end the day with a Philly cheesesteak! Sonny's was conveniently located next to the hostel we stored our bags at. I ordered the loaded cheesesteak wit whiz ($12) and fiancé had a chicken cheesesteak ($12 + 2.50 for bacon + 1.25 for mushrooms= $15.75). We split fries ($3). Apparently there is a $1.59 technology fee which I wasn't aware of. Our order came out within 5 minutes. Although my cheesesteak looked good, there was hardly any whiz, which was truly disappointing, and dry. Overall it was a fine cheesesteak but I can't imagine this is Philly's best; it certainly wasn't distinguishable from any cheesesteak I've gotten in Arizona. The fries and chicken cheesesteak were fine also. Within the ~20 minutes that we dined in, I noticed the cook ran his fingers through his hair and resumed frying fries, and another cook took and ate a fry as he went on cooking cheesesteaks. The bathroom was clean.

Yelp
Stayed at the Hilton and was able to walk the 12min over- not sure I'd do it alone but it was fine and around 5pm. Shop wasn't packed and they had some seating open which was great. Ordered 2 cheesesteaks with wiz one with onions and the other with mushrooms and onions (loaded). No drink but an order of fries (very good), no salt. Sadly one sandwich didn't have cheese, they gave us a side of cheese and apologized. I would go back!
google avatar

Sean L.

Yelp
Go to Sonny's if you want a memorable Philly cheesesteak! I ordered a Philly cheesesteak with onions and cheese wiz and it lived up to my high expectations. I am getting hungry posting this review and seeing the picture of my cheesesteak again. Add this restaurant to your list of things to do in Philly!
google avatar

Brittny S.

Yelp
Worth the wait. Our group of 10 couldn't leave the Philly area without trying a cheesesteak. Sonny's came highly recommended near our hotel. The wait to order and get food was roughly about an hour. But there were several groups ahead of us. The Philly cheesesteak was very good and so were the fries . The location is small and has limited seating.
google avatar

Leilani G.

Yelp
I obviously could not visit Philly without trying a Philly cheesesteak! I was only in town for a quick layover and Sonny's happened to be right around the corner from the hostel I stored my luggage at. When I walked in it was pretty packed but I got lucky enough to snag a small table. I personally don't know enough about cheesesteaks to say whether this is the best of the best but in my humble opinion it was pretty good! Everything from the bread, the meat, and the melty provolone cheese was delicious and kept me going for the rest of the few hours I had to explore Philly!
google avatar

April L.

Yelp
Tasty cheesesteak but I thought for the price it would be a much larger sandwich. With so many options in Philly this one fell short for me.
google avatar

Jenna R.

Yelp
Now me personally this is the GREATEST cheasteak place of all time!!!!!!!!!!! I LIKE IT SO MUCH MY WONDERFUL grandmother made a sonny's puzzle for me of a sonnys cheeseteak. The food is perfectly cooked. Jenna's nephew 11 year, Will

Yelp
Not the best and not the worse. Heard a lot of great things but when I got my cheesesteak I was kind of disappointed. The bread was soft but cold. The cheese wasn't melted very well and the meat was also very dry. There's a lot of seating. A lot of choices in the menu. The staff is very welcoming and helpful. Also bring a water bottle from the outside because you'll be paying $3 for a bottle of water.

Yelp
We found this cute place on the way to Betsy Ross house. It was full of people and had a great patio area. The menu is small and simple. We ordered the bacon cheesesteak. Food came out really fast. A good spot to stop and check out if you are in the area
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
Pretty standard cheesesteak. The meat was plentiful, had good flavor and wasn't dry. They went a little lite on the cheez wiz for my taste. They weren't too busy and I didn't have to wait in line. Also the bathroom was clean.

Yelp
When it comes to food, Philadelphia is famously known for the Philly Cheesesteak. So of course we had to try one on our trip to the city of brotherly love. We're staying in Old City and the hotel staff recommended we try Sonny's for the best cheesesteak in the area. My Dad and I walked to Sonny's from our hotel. When we arrived we were one of the only customers but as the night progressed it became busier. Browse the menu, order at the counter, find a seat, and wait for your number to be called. The menu is straightforward and simple--Cheesesteaks, Burgers, or Grilled Cheese. You're able to choose your protein (beef or chicken), type of cheese, and any toppings. They also have fries, mozzarella sticks, and onion rings. There are a few tables for big groups, barstools, and a couple of tables outside. Service was friendly and recommendations were provided since we're tourists. The workers do a good job juggling a quick turnaround of cooking and getting your food to you. Now was it the best cheesesteak, that's debatable. I don't eat beef or cheese due to dietary restrictions so I still have yet to try a traditional cheesesteak. I ordered a Chicken Sandwich with Grilled Onions and Hot Peppers. The roll was soft, the chicken dry and barely seasoned, but the toppings provided a nice texture and mild heat. My Dad got the Beef Cheese Steak with Lettuce, Tomato, and Grilled Onion. Both of us agreed that it was okay but we didn't get a wow factor from our meal and left yearning for more. The sandwich is also really long and I could only eat half so it's a good size to share or to have if you're super hungry. If you're on the hunt for the best Philly Cheesesteak then Sonny's Famous Steaks is an okay option in the heart of Old City. The casual and no-frills eatery is located on Market Street. Portions are filling, prices are reasonable, and service is relatively fast. Parking is street or in lots surrounding the area; it's also in a walkable location. We're happy we got to try a famous Philly dish but are still on the hunt for the best one in town!

Yelp
It's trying to try all these cheesesteaks in just a week. But we're up to the challenge. Most recent was Sonny's on Market. Quite a few folks in line about 1:00. Put in our orders and in about five minutes we had lunch exactly as ordered. Didn't want peppers and didn't get any. Perfect. Fresh hot sandwich with terrific flavor. The juicy meat didn't soak through the bread. I choose American cheese but could have had cheese whizz, mozzarella, blue or cheddar. Sonny's has fries too but we opted for a lighter lunch. The sandwich was plenty. It's a small place with lots of charm. Simply can't imagine you being disappointed if you give it a try.

Yelp
I had the Philly cheese steak classic. The beef was a bit chewy and was not very hot. It was just a regular Philly sandwich. Was a bit disappointed for a Philly cheese that is supposed to be so famous in Philadelphia . Visiting from California. The place was nice and clean. Service was ok.

Yelp
My sister and I were in Philadelphia and of course had to get cheesesteaks here! This place was on our road out and WOW!! It was absolutely fantastic. The sandwich was very flavorful and huge making it extremely filling and we both had leftovers too. Service was fast and prices were good for the quality and size! Would definitely go again!

Yelp
Great staff, welcoming location, fantastic cheesesteak - - - - - - - - October, 2023 Visit Our family visited Philadelphia for a family wedding. We had a good time. On Saturday morning, we toured some of the historic sights and then we needed lunch. I had seen Sonny's the day before so we knew where to go. Blessedly we found a parking spot, right in front. We ordered the Philly cheesesteak with onions and peppers (an no runny cheese on top), and they were great... all three of us liked them a lot... great bread, and fantastically well cooked beef - SO NICE! Sometimes food is good and sometimes... the family/friends you're with, the events of the day... your hunger level... and the food is extra good This is one of those times... great family time + gooood food = extra tasty steak on that great bread! Thank you, Sonny's! ----- ----- -----

Yelp
HUGE Mistake! Don't waste your time or $$ Famous Steaks.???? No way! 2-45-3pm I was traveling from out of state to Upstate New York and was asked to please bring my family a good cheesesteak. I called bout a hour away to ask a question about green peppers and was told call when you are 10-15 minutes away so order could be ready. So I called when we 15 minutes away. I was put on hold and forgot about by the female. I could hear her talking to other workers but no customers. So I pull up and head in. No line. 6 people inside eating. I went to the counter and ordered 5 cheesesteaks to go. 3 to eat now. 2 packaged to travel. $71 and change. Told the Women at the counter about being on hold 15 minutes that laughed and said "Sorry. They got busy." REALLY??? Like I said heard her having casual conversation with coworker , plus there no line and few people seated.. Got back to the car excited to eat as we drove 4 more hours to see family. My wife started eating hers as we hit I95. She looks at me and made a very unhappy face. Doesn't say a word then hands me mine wrapped to eat. I was so excited for a great steak cheesesteak... that was so wrong!!!!! Horrible!! Where to start.. the meat had no seasoning or flavor. Now mind you --last time in August I was there the food was on point but this time is was not great at all. Plain meat that tasted horrible the whiz held it together but again no real good taste. You wouldn't know there were any sweet peppers or onions on it because it was so sparse. You would think it being a Philadelphia cheesesteak Famous Steaks it would be full of the good stuff.. think again!! My wife and son has the same problem with their 2 steaks!! She wanted to know why they were so bad..?? She asked theymust have been packed because of phone call for so long, Right? Nope!! , quality customer service?? Nope!!!! and was a huge disappointment and subpar food. She took this place out of my phone contacts immediately!!!! Being on the highway during driving rain storm trying to get home you can't turn around on I95 easily to go back and complain or try to return them. so we wrapped them up, bagged them and trashed at our next fuel stop in northern Jersey. Worse part is I bought 2 of these horrible sandwiches, put them in a cooler to deliver my mom and uncle. I didn't have the heart to tell them they were horrible so these were put in the trash here. My dad was from Philly and praised the cheesesteak sandwiches. Was hoping to get something nice for my mom to share a fond memory of my dad... completely Spoiled by crap food. If I could give a ZERO I would. So upset

Yelp
I couldn't leave Philly without trying a Philly cheesesteak!! We just got a cheese steak to share since that seemed like the most classic option! We were pleasantly surprised by how good it was. It is not very heavy and the cheese actually add an extra tastiness to it! Apparently you are suppose to eat it with ketchup when it starts getting dry so we tried that and the two paired pretty well. One thing is that I had 1/3 of the sandwich so I don't think I would of think of it so positively if I ate the whole sandwich as I would've gotten sick of it quickly. For the price, a pretty good experience! The restaurant is very much a grab and go with limited seating so it would be nice to buy the sandwich and go elsewhere to eat it. The service was also really nice and quick and they constantly had people coming in. Not sure if this is the best cheesesteak in Philly but it's pretty good!
