"Two friends from an arts university started sonoba as ‘a soba shop that makes pottery’. The interior sports an industrial décor, with pendant lights hanging from a ceiling made of recycled wood; adjacent is a pottery studio. Having majored in interior design, the chef was involved in the restaurant’s design and construction. Both artists mould shapes from powder and water—earth for the potter, buckwheat grains for the chefs. An unexpected point in common between vessels and food." - Michelin Inspector

Nondescript storefront - we only found out about this spot at the recommendation of a local resident. They serve a nice cold soba with braised herring and grated yam. The omelette and mackerel sushi are worth a try too. Limited capacity but we were lucky we didn't have to queue. Also, the owner makes all the plates and bowls and each piece is beautiful and unique.

Amazing! One of the best soba places i ever had. The portion was good and all their side dishes are good! Saba sushi, duck and dashi Tamago. Highly recommend to all soba lovers.

A really charming soba shop tucked away in a quiet street in Kyoto! Visited on a rainy day and had a soba in warm broth and a side of Tamago with grated daikon, both dishes were yummy and superbly well done. I love that they serve their water in their own ceramic ware made at the very same workshop right next door.

Had soba cravings while walking over to a coworking space on a weekday and decided to stop in for a quick lunch. There was luckily no wait when I got there (around 1pm or slightly after). I got the matcha soba option as they only make it once a week so I couldn’t say no! My clam soba was delicious, simple, minimalistic — wish I tried the appetisers as they look great from the other reviews. The interiors are super cozy, and the shop is adjacent to a ceramics studio. I’d love to come back one day to try that out too.

Quality. Fairly simple menu but here’s a hot tip: choose one soba and order everything else. The first bite of the egg omelette gave me goosebumps. Scary good. Noodles were flavorful and chewy yet satisfyingly snappy. Don’t look for any recommendations here for which soba bowl to get just follow your heart, they’re all good and deserve love. Be good to the staff as they are accommodating and detail oriented. They noticed I had finished my noodles and brought over the soba-yu almost right away. There may be a wait, but don’t be discouraged. For reference, I arrived 15 mins before open and was second in line but by the time they opened there were enough people waiting to fill all the seats and then some.

Ordered a cold soba with yam paste and marinated mackerel, it was tasted sweetness with a light soy based soup. Japanese omelette was really refreshing, can feel its original flavor of egg and radish source. The duck slices were juicy. This shop provides English translation for its menu. It was seated up by both locals and foreigner.

We stumbled across this lovely little spot with a ceramics studio in the back. Grilled saba was amazing. Beautiful fresh buckwheat soba noodles. We had them hot but will have to try them cold next time. There’s a green magazine booklet which tells you about the shop’s origins, the history of saba and soba and the proper way to eat soba - a lovely story about the artistry and passion behind this shop. Probably one of the best meals of my life! A treasure to find!
