A Guide to Westchester County’s Top Restaurants | Eater NY

"Colombian-born chef Rafael Palomino explores the cuisine of predominantly Spanish-speaking countries at Sonora. Each dish is identified by the cuisine it represents on the menu, like Peruvian quinoa empanadas, Cuban churrasco, Argentinian braised short ribs, and the restaurant’s signature Spanish paella loaded with seafood and chorizo. Sonora has also expanded its vegan small plates recently and expanded its bar program to include more than 25 tequilas and mezcals (though it’s hard to beat the mojitos, which come in six flavors, including mango, passionfruit, and black cherry)." - Samantha Garbarini

Google
Really appreciated to fusion food from this restaurant. The tapas style of the dishes is great to be able to try a little bit of everything without getting too full at once. There were many different types of dishes completely different from each other, but equally as delicious. Having the guacamole served in a molcajete was a very nice touch that stood out to me. The drinks were also great, they had many options for different palates. The staff was very attentive, they were very perceptive to empty drinks and ensured to create a positive atmosphere as we dined. They had amazing live music that created a comfortable and enjoyable environment.

The restaurant is very lively. There's indoor and outdoor sitting. We sat outside and it was perfect. Our waitress was tremendous - she gave us time to order and made suggestions. The food was delicious, Everything was just right. Will be coming back for sure!

Google
The restaurant offers a diverse Latin-inspired menu in a nice atmosphere with friendly and welcoming staff. Overall, I had mixed feelings about the food. We started with the crispy coconut shrimp appetizer, which was served over a thin slice of plantain. The shrimp were deeply fried—borderline overdone—but still had a good flavor. The accompanying lemongrass jalapeño sauce was very mild and lacked any noticeable jalapeño kick. For my entrée, I had the Angus skirt steak topped with a quail egg, served alongside lobster and sweet plantain Chino Latino rice, finished with a saffron lime garlic mojito sauce. The steak arrived lukewarm . Unfortunately, the sauce was quite bland, and the rice had only tiny pieces of lobster with not much flavor overall. My friend ordered the chicken stuffed with sweet plantain, goat cheese, peppers, and chorizo, served with saffron mashed potatoes and a sweet sherry sauce. She enjoyed her dish, and the portion size was generous. I’d consider returning to try other items on the menu—especially when the weather is warmer so I can enjoy the outdoor seating. The restaurant also offers the convenience of an on-site free parking lot.

Google
Really enjoyed this place. Fusion menu did manage the tastes of the place based dishes very well. The drinks were excellent. Each of the food items came out as they were ready and were shareable sizes. We spent a little more to try some extra dishes but it was worth it. Well done and the service was amazing.

Google
The brunch menu at Sonora has a lot of great options. There is a variety of different Latin dishes and the ambience is cozy and cute. There was live music at brunch time and the white mango sangria was powerful.

Google
Went for Restaurant week and will definitely be back. All the food was delicious, and the service was polite and attentive considering it was somewhat full dinner hour. There was a change in the prefix menu, so my husband was a little disappointed, but his meal was still amazing. We started with happy hour at the bar, and drinks are not weak lol!

Google
The food was so good and well presented. My compliments to the chef , owner, and staff. I think their service is top-notch. This restaurant is worth long-distance driving. This restaurant is 45 miles from my house and it was worth all the time and traffic to get there. They were so accommodating even though the place was packed.I loved loved the branzino.

Yelp
This food was definitely a 10/10. I have no complaints at all. The only reaon I'm not giving it a 5 star is because when I went it was dead. There was two other peoplen in the entire resturants and it was a sunday afternoon. There was no live jazz or anything. The interior very nice and they also have outdoor. Additional i add the octopus and the seafood paella. I was so hungry I forgot to take pictures. I'll definitely go back and hopefully the vibe is better.

Yelp
We came for the Father's Day brunch and the food was delicious, as usual. My husband really enjoys the live jazz music. We love the atmosphere and Latin inspired decor. The food combinations are always tasty and the portions are just right.

Yelp
This place looks like a private little house. The setup inside is very nice. They have low Spanish music with keeps the ambiance very relaxed. The food we tried was the Paella for two people which was $80. It was very good and not too salty like I've had in other restaurants. The only complaint I had with the dish was that it had very little rice when the dish was for two. It came with a full lobster chopped up, Mussels, clams, and shrimps. There was plenty of seafood but I felt the rice was very minimal for two people. None the less I get full fast so it was fine but I would definitely get a different dish next time. The churassco tacos appetizer was to die for, they were completely amazing and I wouldn't even had mind another set as my dish lol. The steak was cooked so perfect and was so tender, absolutely loved them. Definitely getting the churassco dinner next time. The service was excellent. Servers were very attentive and constantly cleaning our table and refilling our drink. A+.

Yelp
We went to Easter Brunch at Sonora. It was a great experience all around. Valet parking staff were quick and professional. We had a 1PM reservation. We were seated right away. The staff offered the regular menu and a Price Fixe menu. Everything was reasonably priced. The food was amazing. Wait staff was attentive and courteous. The live jazz band was very talented, and played at just the right volume. We will be back soon!

Yelp
I've read about this restaurant many times in the past from Westchester Magazine. I'll get right to the point. This is arguably the best restaurant I've been to in years. Period!! My wife and I went last Friday and they had a 3 course dinner menu for restaurant week. Once I saw they had the paella , I was game. For starters, I had the shrimp ceviche which I devoured in total bliss. Next, it was their seafood paella which I inhaled with their home made hot sauce which I will have again this week . For dessert, they had a cheesecake and tres leches cake which was amazing. Their sangria was also to die for in addition to their stellar hospitality and calm atmosphere. I gotta beg my wife if we can go there for Good Friday. As a Bad Catholic, I'll have their seafood paella. Oh, they also have a killer menu with amazing tapas. I guess I should just move in

Yelp
This restaurant has a lot of good reviews. My experience here was quite below par. The atmosphere and service are quite good. The food is not. My brother and I ordered steak and eggs for Sunday brunch. The portion of steak was small and the texture quite chewy and unappetizing. The eggs were scrambled but not fluffy and inviting at all. Even more surprising, the meal came with multigrain toast that was soggy and not really toasted at all. All of this for the bargain price of $18.95. This is a sad situation since this place had potential to be a good spot but the chef just doesn't get it.

Yelp
Very good food. Service is quite fast and to detail. Music get a bit loud to hold a normal conversation but the ambience is amazing.

Yelp
I went for brunch today for my birthday, we started with their guacamole and chips, very good! The got Challah French Toast, the presentation was good, downfall it was not cooked fully . From what I was able to eat, the taste was good. They took the meal off, and as far as the service , it was great, and I will return again for a second try!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent find! Ate here last night for the first time. Will definitely return. Exquisite dishes, excellent attentive service, reasonable prices for the quality, tasteful decor and ambiance.

Mike O.

Yelp
Great food and service. Paella and guacamole are great. Been here twice. brunch and dinner. Coming back again.

Yelp
Had a great " Christening. brunch" at Sonora! The staff was spot on with the service as were the drinks and food! Their appetizers are to die for - coconut shrimp, smoky Mac and cheese, goat cheese fritters, eggplant meatballs the list goes on. Can't wait to go back and enjoy a dinner!

Anthony S.

Yelp
Amazing food. Great ambiance! Presentation was excellent and great tasting food! Would definitely come back again!

Coco C.

Yelp
Disappointing food and service. Not going back! They screwed up our order and the food was barely edible once it arrived.

Yelp
came here for hh. yet again this place over delivers. fabulous cocktails. from the hh menu - the quinoa empanada, guac, and argentine eggplant meatballs are standouts. my wife got the salmon entree and it was incredible - perfectly cooked and a wonderful saffron sauce. this place really knows how to cook quinoa. but the killer dish was the steak tacos

Yelp
If you're looking for fine dining Sonora is the place to be. The ambiance is filled with upscale Latin touches and warm colors. My group sat on the outdoor patio which I definitely recommend during the spring/summer months. The menu itself has a wide variety of Latin dishes from different Latin countries (Paella, ceviche, tacos, etc). I thought that this was cool. They offer mostly tapas options so it's probably best to get items you can share with a group. I was a little disappointed in the ceviche. It was more of a soupy consistency and didn't have much seafood. The flavors were good, but for $15 it fell short in my opinion. Also, the quinoa empanadas were uniquely shaped and didn't really look appetizing. Expect to pay a pretty penny for just, in my opinion, average food.

Yelp
Upon arrival we were greeted right away and brought to our table. The restaurant appears to be an older house turned into a restaurant . Different rooms for seating. We ordered the regular classic margarita and blood orange margarita which were delicious. We tried the following tapas: coconut shrimp, shrimp and octopus ceviche, steak empanadas and goat cheese croquetas. All of which were so good. My favorites were the croquetas and coconut shrimp. Hubs and I shared the churrasco which was so so good. First time having chino latino rice. Amazing. Churros, I mean you can't go wrong. We def will be back.

Hedy W.

Yelp
The service was excellent and the ambiance is lovely. Last time we ate there, the food was excellent but not so last night. I ordered filet mignon The filet mignon was covered in potatoes, rice and chorizo. The meat was overcooked and the rice and potatoes tasted as if they were leftovers from the night before. The chorizo did not add to the dish.

Yelp
We had a fabulous dinner here on Christmas Eve. Every course was excellent! We started off with the calamari salad, duck quesadilla , shrimp appetizer, and brussels sprout croquet. All four were fabulous, my favorite being the duck though. The sauce on the shrimp was excellent, and the calamari salad was extremely fresh. My mango Mojito was exceptional, a wonderful medley of mint and mango hand muddled together. For entrées, We ordered the skirt steak, the paella, the Bronzino, and salmon. The Bronzino was unbelievable, a new favorite at the table! I loved my skirt steak, which was perfectly cooked, and the salmon was exceptional. Paella was excellent and all of us were extremely happy. Our waiter was so friendly and nice. He explained things to us and nothing was a problem. We ended this perfect dinner with churros and dulce de leche cheesecake. The churro's were warm, cinnamony, and crisp. The dolce de leche cheesecake was silky and delicious. The meal couldn't have been any better, and the service was excellent! We all enjoyed everything. Great job!

Melody M.

Yelp
My wife and friends eat out quite a bit, always searching for the next great dining experience . I've been here twice and so far had a good experience . Good enough to wanna go back. The manager is very alert and attentive and responsive as is the staff . Great prices . Can't think of anything negative to say this far .

Yelp
Went here for restaurant week and it did not disappoint. So many times I feel that a restaurant doesn't show off its cuisine during restaurant week. Sonora surely did. Not one complaint from my group of 4! Great drinks, service, ceviche and entrees. Can't wait to return.

Yelp
Really liked this place. It was so pretty inside! My family and I went on a Sunday for brunch and they had live jazz music. Very nice touch. Food was just the right portion and very delicious. Staff was nice and attentive to our group. What I really liked about the place is that they highlight foods from different areas of the world (Argentina, Spain, Peru and more). Service was great and will definitely recommend and come back. Outdoor seating was also available. I was pleased to see that our waiter was wearing gloves and also a mask.
google avatar

Bonnie F.

Yelp
Dined here on a whim because I was catching a show nearby and I was blown away at a number of things. The restaurant is decorated so uniquely inside, there is a cool atmosphere & vibe, and the staff are all friendly and accommodating. I ordered the stuffed chicken with mashed potatoes. I'm not a person that typically orders chicken and I'm so glad I did. This dish was magnificent! One of my all time favorite dishes I've ever had at a restaurant in Westchester. I can't wait to go back and order the exact same thing.
google avatar

Francis D.

Yelp
Service was on point food and atmosphere was great . Will definitely go back. I recommend this place

Kiki G.

Yelp
I don't normally leave reviews. I've been here before and loved the food. I live near by and figured I'd come and check it out again after some time has passed. My partner and I decided to split a meal and order a couple tapas appetizers. We ordered steak expecting it to be full of flavor. It was not. Sadly, the food was subpar. Definitely not worth the money spent. They did however compensate with a chocolate lava cake and some complimentary cookies at the end of our meal. Still, don't think we'll be returning. The drinks were good, that's about it. Also, one of the runners took out plate while we were still eating....quit disappointing to say the least.
google avatar

John A.

Yelp
We just ordered from this place, and I have to say that I'm extremely disappointed. Granted, I know it's takeout, but the meals looked nothing like the presentation pictures from other people's reviews. I got the short ribs, and they were dry, and I didn't taste any goat cheese in the goat cheese mashed potatoes. My wife got the chicken dish. It was a small chicken rollup on top of sauce missing all the add-ons I see in the pictures. Despite that, she enjoyed it. For dessert, she got the cheesecake with guava sauce. If you look at the pictures, it's a beautiful display with guava sauce and vanilla ice cream. She got a bland piece of cheesecake sans guava sauce. It was tasteless and not worth finishing(pictured). Again, I know it's takeout, but there shouldn't be such a drastic difference from take-out to dine-in. I will not be returning.

Yelp
Excellent food top chef friendly service and relaxing cozy atmosphere upstairs they have a room for private parties, outdoor dining too and a great trio jazz band on the weekend, their drinks, cordials are fabulous. The desserts and their many coffee choices end a memorable enjoyable evening!
google avatar

Kirstie R.

Yelp
We went on a Sunday for brunch. The food was delicious. It was four of us, so we tried a bunch of different things. Everything was soo good. They had live music which was a nice bonus. Also, cava sangria was so good. A must!

Melissa S.

Yelp
Tasty food. Great cocktails. Amazing service. The ambiance is lovely, especially when they do the live jazz. This will become our new go to spot!

Yelp
I travel to Port Chester frequently for entertainment, and always eat at Sonora Restaurant! The food and ambience are excellent, and the staff is superb. There is always a smiling face, from the time we get seated until the time we leave our tables! Antonio is an excellent waiter, and everyone in our crew was impressed with his table side manner, and his recommendations were spot on. He suggested the short ribs, and they were melt in your mouth fantastic! The guacamole was as fresh as it gets, and our table also enjoyed the ceviche, as well as the pan seared halibut, and an assortment of drinks that were most excellent. When we ride in for a show, its after a two and half hour drive from Pennsylvania. It's always nice to know amazing people like Antonio, and the excellent food served at Sonora are always waiting for us when we hit town. We'll be back...Most highly recommended!
google avatar

Sherie S.

Yelp
Am pretty disappointed today. My favorite grilled octopus was served tough. I sent back and still tough the second time around. Probably I I will not order it for next time. My daughter ordered paella and she loved it. Coffee was not good and served lukewarm. Not sure what's going on with Sonora today. It's cinco de Mayo and seems they can't handle the volume of the crowd.
google avatar

Nelia F.

Yelp
The place was nicely decorated and the service was good..... the drinks were not the best and the only food I liked was the eggplant meatballs they were full of flavor, the rest was just ok.... So I would say try it for yourself and maybe you will like it.
google avatar

Imma S.

Yelp
I'll cut to the chase, the negative reviews are on target; we were excited to go because the menu and photos of the dishes looked so inviting and delicious but we were met with substandard food and service. Cost a pretty penny too. I ordered the paella as was recommended by our waiter. It was terrible and the 1/2 (2lb)lobster in the dish was inedible 1) it was submerged in greasy rice/food, un-cracked and impossible to get at 2) the 1/2 of tail that was "getable" was complete mush and gross. I won't bore you with the rest, don't bother. Couldn't get the check for almost 45 minutes. Yikes. Plenty of other fine places to go in 914.

Linda D.

Yelp
The music is not appropriate - a Spanish restaurant and jazz? They used to have live Spanish music - what happened?
google avatar

Steven D.

Yelp
Good place I never had have gone until recently. Just don't be too hungry as plates are small. But worth it for light dinner
google avatar

Ellen M.

Yelp
This place is southern westchester's "secret gem". I love everything about this restaurant. The food is amazing. The atmosphere is great and the employees are always super friendly and helpful. The chef- impeccable. If you have not been here-!you are missing out.

William H.

Yelp
This place is very good a little odd because it looks like a house that a family lives in but the food is very good and nice ambiance and the people are very nice here also.

Yelp
Came in on a Saturday night with a 730 reservation for four people and arrived promptly at 730. The restaurant and bar were packed, so we sided up to the bar for a drink to wait. Around 8 someone in our party checked in and was told it should be only 10-15 more minutes. 815 rolls around and we're now 2 drinks in, and 2 hours into our babysitting charges, and still no word. At 830 I ask to speak to a manager, after a hostess tells me it will only be 10-5 more minutes, who makes me wait 5 minutes before coming to speak to me. She tells me they seated a different party at our table but one should be opening up soon. I ask her if she'll be paying for our next round at the bar but she assured me that we'll be seated in no time and that she'll get us a round when we sit. We finally sat at 855 for a 730 reservation. We put in an order of spicy guacamole immediately and sangria (rather than each order a $15 drink we decided a $30 pitcher was a better idea to be nice). The guacamole came out with absolutely zero spice. I would feed it to my kids without hesitation but we were assured it was "spicy." Zero spice. We ate it because we were starving. We ordered a few other apps for the table to share that were fine. The entrees were definitely the highlight. They got our order incorrect but it was quickly corrected. The manager came to check on us once early on and we told her about the not spicy guacamole - she apologized and said she'd be back to check on us as more food came out. We never saw her again. We needed to get home to relieve babysitters, so we passed on dessert, but they brought 2 out anyway. I would have preferred that they give us money for the sitters...the desserts were both just ok. Very sweet. So we got a pitcher of sangria, guacamole that wasn't very good and desserts we didn't order as an apology for waiting almost 90 minutes with no information unless pressed for it. The restaurant obviously does extremely well but with so many other amazing options out there, the only way we'd go back is if they invited us back to right their wrongs. In the meantime, we'll cross this one off the list
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
Amazing food!! Best guacamole and tapas! Excellent staff! The food was fresh, and delicious! Fish tacos were perfection! Ended with chocolate fondue- their sangria so fruity and delicious- not too sweet. We are coming back to eat through the menu.
google avatar

Richard L.

Yelp
Went here for Thanksgiving as they had a menu catered to the holiday Turkey was one of the entrees they had on the menu and we left totally satisfied as the three course menu was one hit after the next place was crowded but you could not tell with the great service they had from getting out drinks giving us a complimentary appetizer we will definitely be going back

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
I've been to Sonora a handful of times in the past several years and have always had great experiences. My most recent visit was no exception. The staff is so friendly and helpful, the ambiance is relaxed but special, and the food is really good! I was there last Saturday night and the place was packed! My friend and I got a bunch of tapas and just shared--tuna tartare, a shrimp dish, Brussels sprouts, and a yucca dish. Some wonderful chocolate dessert and coffee--everything was delicious. We were looked after but not rushed. I'm so glad it's thriving because this restaurant really deserves it. Extremely well run and delicious food. I'll be back soon.

Yelp
We've been to Sonora a dozen times since they opened. For whatever reason, it had been a solid 18 months since our last visit, and we were excited to dine there again this past weekend. Unfortunately, this visit disappointed. For one, the menu had changed dramatically. We always thought of Sonora as a tapas place, offering a wide variety of small plates to share. The tapas menu has shrunk considerably, and because one in our party eats no meat, her choices were extremely limited. We did share several small plates among three of our foursome, and they were all good, with a special salmon tartare among the best. Table-made guacamole was also very good, although that's tough to not get good. The ceviche was fine ... nothing all that special. Unfortunately, the next course is where we were really disappointed. Sonora had a red snapper special that sounded delicious. Instead, the fish was well overcooked and dry, and the small clams in the shell were flavorless. We also shared shrimp tacos, which were fine ... nothing memorable. I will give the hangar steak a thumbs up ... of the three we shared, we all agreed that the steak was the only dish we really enjoyed. My wife had the squash tacos, which she enjoyed. Desserts were yummy. Sonora had been a mainstay for years ... solid every time. This weekend, we were disappointed enough to cross it off our list. Felt like they took away the best parts and replaced them with mediocre fare that lacked enough to be worth it. A shame.

Yelp
Excellent Latin American themed restaurant with a hint of the SouthWest. I've dined here quite a few times over the years when in the neighborhood and have always found the experience to be very enjoyable. The menu choices are both varied and creative and the food preparation first class. Add to this great ambiance and service, and reasonable prices and you will have a great time here. This restaurant is always very busy and that speaks for itself. Enjoy.

Raymond R.

Yelp
Sonora never disappoints!!! The ambiance, food and staff are amazing. I have been here many times and the service is exceptional. Our waiter, Antonio, was attentive and excellent. He always came by to check on us and made great recommendations. Go to Sonora you will love it.

Stella T.

Yelp
I made a 7:30 reservation for 4 and arrived 10 minutes early to a packed house. That was a good sign the food would be good. They clearly accommodated walk-ins on first come first serve basis regardless of reservations. I ordered a margarita at the bar that was served in a martini glass. Why??? We ordered tapas which were mostly good. The bus staff spilled the substantial remains of a ceviche tapas on me and ran off. I had to use our napkins and wet wipes from my purse to clean up as no one came to assist. I literally had to point out the mess to our waiter for them to move the table and replace it with a clean setup. Eventually some one came to apologize after I had taken care of cleaning myself up. We were offered churros which mostly no one wanted as we would have ordered desert if desired. Got home to realize my suede boots are stained. No returning! Not that they care, obviously!

Yelp
Tonight I went to Sonora to have dinner with my family. They had valet parking which was especially convenient for my grandmother so she didn't have to walk to far to the front door. I wasn't sure what to expect going in but I was pleasantly surprised with a doorway lined with butterflies which opened into a series of rooms decked with wooden chairs, ornate light fixtures, colorful walls and festive music. For checking in through Yelp I was able to get a pitcher of free sangria the Red version and it was delicious. It wasn't too sweet and the assortment of apples, oranges, etc inside gave it a nice flavor. We ended up ordering Tapas versions of Coconut Shrimp, Lobster Quesadillas and Mexican Pizza. I don't eat seafood too often but the Coconut Shrimp had a nice amount of flavor and the sauce it came with complemented it nicely. The Lobster Quesadillas were definitely my favorite between the three. It was easy to eat. I'm a little unsure about the Mexican Pizza. It consisted of and while it tasted great the weight of the ingredients such as the avocado slice made it difficult to hold/eat. My mother had a bowl of black beans and rice which was very filling. The beans were chewier than she wanted but it tasted great overall. The South of the Border Lobster Roll was nice. I'm a sucker for bread and the bread was nice and soft, the vegetables were crunchy. The Lobster itself was inconsistent. Some of it was soft and other parts were tougher to get through. To finish off, we had a Blueberry and Strawberry Cobbler. We had the choice of Vanilla, Mango or Coconut and I chose coconut which complimented the cobbler nicely. The crust was delicious and the fruit was still full of flavor. The staff and managers were very accommodating and friendly. I would definitely visit again!

Yelp
Met some friends Saturday night around 5:00 p.m. it wasn't overly crowded I was concerned because it is a small place. They do have on-site parking it is a small lot but still very convenient. The food delicious and the service was amazing. We got the brussel sprouts salad which I cannot recommend more it was so good!!!!! My friend got the roasted eggplant which she said was delicious and another friend got the coconut shrimp which were huge and very tasty. For drinks we got a Moscow mule and classic margarita which were both very good. For dessert we got the vanilla flan and the cheesecake again excellent!!!!! While we were there Antonio helped us out he was kind friendly and funny. I 100% recommend trying this restaurant.

Yelp
Perfect spot for a date. We had great apps and each ordered the Paella for dinner. I do wish the lobster was cracked more as it was a little struggle to get the meat but great presentation and instagram worthy. The sangria was perfection. The desserts were enough for 1 per person. The back patio was nice and the service was attentive but respectful. In terms of photos, the back patio could be lit a bit more (another strand of lights). They were very clean. Parking was easy as they have a lot. No valet the night we went. The price is reasonable but check the menu/website prior so you know what you are getting into.

Yelp
Very disappointed with the food and the service tonight . I asked my waiter about the Vegeterian paella dish and he told me it had vegetables and tofu. I particular chose it because of the tofu. When it arrived I asked where the tofu was and he said oh they don't add that any more. Well you should have told me that before you just gave it to me and didn't say a word. And you should have offered something else instead. Then he dropped a dessert menu and disappeared for ages. There were hardly any people around in the restaurant so no reason for the service to be so lousy . I'm afraid I will not be going back.
