We've been to Sonora a dozen times since they opened. For whatever reason, it had been a solid 18 months since our last visit, and we were excited to dine there again this past weekend. Unfortunately, this visit disappointed.
For one, the menu had changed dramatically. We always thought of Sonora as a tapas place, offering a wide variety of small plates to share. The tapas menu has shrunk considerably, and because one in our party eats no meat, her choices were extremely limited. We did share several small plates among three of our foursome, and they were all good, with a special salmon tartare among the best. Table-made guacamole was also very good, although that's tough to not get good. The ceviche was fine ... nothing all that special.
Unfortunately, the next course is where we were really disappointed. Sonora had a red snapper special that sounded delicious. Instead, the fish was well overcooked and dry, and the small clams in the shell were flavorless. We also shared shrimp tacos, which were fine ... nothing memorable. I will give the hangar steak a thumbs up ... of the three we shared, we all agreed that the steak was the only dish we really enjoyed. My wife had the squash tacos, which she enjoyed. Desserts were yummy.
Sonora had been a mainstay for years ... solid every time. This weekend, we were disappointed enough to cross it off our list. Felt like they took away the best parts and replaced them with mediocre fare that lacked enough to be worth it. A shame.
