Where to Eat Queso in Nashville | Eater Nashville

"The Cool Springs New Mexican restaurant offers quadruple the queso options for dipping — but the Sopapilla signature chile con queso is a stellar place to start. The inclusion of Hatch chiles in a piping hot bowl of queso is always a good move, and Southwest transplant Steve Dale incorporates them with a blend of assorted yellow cheeses, house spices, and onion. Other options include queso topped with chipotle shrimp, brisket, or charred kale." - Delia Jo Ramsey

First time ordering the Stuff Sopapilla. It was good but for $17 I expected more meat. There was little meat in there that I had to eat more chips to fill my stomach. The picture is misleading. It’s smaller than it looks. Edit: 9/25/2024 wife’s birthday. Had the tres enchiladas all beef. It was very good. Service was great. Seems like all the waiters and waitresses worked together and not just their own table which is nice to see. 4/5 had the tres enchiladas again but it was cooked longer in the oven and the cheese burnt a little. Looked good though and tasted good as before.

Our first trip to Sopapilla’s. I was told the burger was the best in town. I ordered the brisket burger. It was cooked perfectly but the flavor was a bit bland. I wanted to like it more but it was just average for a restaurant burger. The tacos that my wife ordered were fine but nothing special. It may have been an off day in the kitchen so we’ll try it again sometime. The server was attentive and polite and the atmosphere was nice.

Needless to say, won't return. Had shrimp and grits, shrimp was good but there probably wasn't even a tablespoon of grits! Should be called shrimp and peppers. Waitress acted like she didnt want to be there. After our food was delivered, she never came back to see how everything tasted. She just set off a very bad vibe for everyone at our table from the very beginning!

Amazing, high quality food in a clean, comfortable environment. Our party of 5 had a great time. The chips were crispy and fresh and the salsa was the best I've had in a restaurant. Loved the shrimp and grits. And our server Andy was very friendly and attentive.

We always visit Sopapillas when we come to Nashville. Usually it is good. This time the service was so slow. I guess they don’t have enough servers. I got up to get more chips for our table and our server told me she was bartending. Then the meal came . The brisket tacos were a mouthful of fat . Gross. My daughter got fajitas that were good and we had the trio of dips for the table. That was good too. Then we needed a refill on drinks and waited forever. I stood up and tried to wave someone down . I doubt we’ll go back

The Hostess was Nasty with a Double N. We called ahead to see if there was a wait. There was a 20 minutes. We were there in 3 minutes & waited 40 minutes with most of the tables empty. That's understandable in these times, but the hostess gave people tables ahead of us which were clearly not reservations. The service was Wonderful! The food was really good. Not great. The salsa had a grainy taste of cumin in it, so if they usually cook it, they didn't this time. I had the chicken filled sopapilla which was okay. I don't like spicy foods as a rule, but the flavors were spot on but lacked any kind of fat in the filling which made it dry. My family said they had a good meal. On the whole, I'd rather be burned at the stake then have to deal with that hostess again.

Google
Im not sure why the negative reviews . Those street tacos were an absolute flavor bomb! Ive eaten tacos all over nashville and for some reason these just blow em all outta the water. Al carbon, brisket, and carnitas!!! Chefs kiss! Our waitress Sofia, was awesome. Super friendly, but gave us our space! My wife had the fajita salad. Also delicious! Happy hour queso was killer. Margs were great. 10/10 across the board. If you had a bad experience id suggest giving it another shot. We will definitely be going back! Bravo, Sopapilla's!!

Google
1) took 1.5 hours for my food to reach my table by the time I ordered ( the restaurant was only half max capacity ) 2) the floors were dirty and slippery, the tables were dirty upon arrival, the menus we received had food and crayon on them, the silverware was unpolished 3) they do not serve Coke 4) despite serving Latin cuisine, there were no Latino severs. 5) the food is not worth the cost. Portions are very small for over 30 dollars a dish. 6) dishes are served with looks over taste in mind. 7) the server was nice and apologetic 8) the music was nice As someone who works in the restaurant business, this restaurant is all bark and no bite. The luxury feeling does not match the quality in the details. You will find similar quality food for half the price and half the wait time at your average Mexican restaurant.

Yelp
Sopapillas is DELICIOUS per usual! My husband and I go every Sunday after church and it never disappoints. Moving to Tennessee we were on the hunt for delicious homemade Mexican style food and this place hits the spot! Sopapillas is a New Mexican base cuisine and it tastes authentic to the places I've loved when in New Mexico. Dishes I've tried: tortilla soup (10/10)- they add so many veggies and it is filled with meat green beef enchiladas (10/10)- tortillas and sauce tastes homemade mini chimichangas (10/10)- MY FAVORITE DISH surf and turf (10/10)- delicious! Shrimp was seasoned VERY well carne asada tacos (10/10)- juicy to perfection Baja tacos (10/10)- batter was delicious and had a great amount of fish which is nice. Prices are VERY reasonable especially for the quality. Service: Drea is great and I believe Rob! Ambiance: Very nice and caters well to their style. Would recommend this place again and again!

Yelp
So....we were arguing in the Hobby lobby parking lot where to go for dinner as we always do...just the two of us. I threw out Mexican and initially the response was "we do Mexican all the time" but eventually she saw the light and suggested this place where she had lunch with our daughter but I had never tried....so here's what I found (her review won't be as detailed or awesome).... Ambiance:: Corner of the Complex next to Herban Market and ample parking (at least when we showed up. Nothing to write home about - not a ton of mexican fare or colors just a standard table and booth set up. Service: Service was great - our host and server were very attentive (it was a slow night apparently also) but either way they were very nice and prompt. Food: I had the Surf & Turf Fajitas which were cooked well and tender. Too many onions and not enough peppers for my liking and the guac / pico were not enough to fill 3 tortillas with the meat. Lots of onions - not sure maybe because it helps for flavor and maybe there are cheap so as to up the profit margin but the tall a good dish. Portions were a bit smaller than other places that i prefer but not a bad portion. Price: IMO - too pricey - $7 for a Pacifico on draft and $13 for my wife's white Sangeia...wow thought we were on broadway! $22 and $25 for the fajitas and again I've had larger portions at other places with equal quality for much less...(see other mexican reviews from me) Summary; If you are Hangry and have to pick a place on Franklin road then you will get good service and food here but you'll pay for it. For just the two of us $80 for 2 fajitas and 3 drinks....just a bit too pricey for Mexican food for me.... it like I said before you'll enjoy the meal and the service. Keep Munching!!!

Yelp
Great service! Food is really good too. Incredible Mexican with an American flair. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Tried coming here the other night but they were closing early due to the snow storm that was coming. Our sister in law suggested Brunch the next day and it was excellent. Can't wait to visit again because we will definitely be returning. Totally enjoyed this gem and the atmosphere had great music to vibe too.

Yelp
I attended a small work event here last year in the VIP room and it was just lovely! Private, warm, comfortable and the food was delish. It made enough of an impression that I hosted a college alumni event here recently in the same room. It was decorated beautifully for the holidays and everyone commented it was the perfect place to meet. The stew and brisket quesadillas were the menu standouts, along with the generous cocktails. Our server Christina was on top of everything and so nice! This is a fantastic place to bring a group and there's free self-parking all around the restaurant.

Yelp
Really enjoyed our dinners and the drinks were great too. We had a late lunch so there wasn't a wait and the service was excellent!

Yelp
Back for the first time and as great as ever. Came in on a Saturday afternoon and was able to seat immediately at a table by the window. First off, great service. Attentive, friendly and kept the drinks topped off. Food served while still piping hot. Second the food was great. G had the three Street Tacos and two filled her up. I had the Angus steak fajitas and wow, that was tender and delicious beef! Enough food to bring home and make a snack out of it the next day. All-in-all, another great visit!

Yelp
Sopapilla's attempts an elevated Mexican cuisine, but left me wishing I'd gone to my staple Mexican dive. The flavor is just not there. The refried beans were bland, and even their spiciest sauce did not pack any punch. The chicken took notes from the beans -- it was also dry. The pricing is absurd. There are places in Franklin which provide much more bang for your buck!

Yelp
Great food - we had a favorite "NM Mexican" restaurant where we moved from and were delighted to find Sopapilla's. Tasty and different from Tex-Mex, good service too.

Lesli N.

Yelp
We chose Sopapilla's to cater our family holiday meal for the second consecutive year. The food was delicious as usual! We had the fajita bar, and everyone enjoyed (adults and children)! The food was delivered to our home very well organized in sturdy containers and maintained a good temperature (we live approximately 25 minutes away from the restaurant). I have to give a HUGE shout out to REESE, who oversaw all the details (meeting with me to determine the menu, and personally delivering and setting up our meal). She was absolutely phenomenal In every way!! Truly a joy to get to know and definitely made our experience stress-free and special!! We had a lot of fun working together on this event, and I highly recommend contacting her if you're looking to plan something similar!

Yelp
The food here was solid as was the ambiance, I could this being a good place to take a date. The service left a lot to be desired. We were seated by the hostess and while wait staff were servicing all of the tables around us they proceeded to ignore us, mind you we were a party 3 so it wasn't like we had this massive group. I think we sat there for a good 10-15 minutes before anyone came by, no one even offered water. Keep in mind the restaurant wasn't that busy either. The fact that there was no acknowledgement for that amount of time after being seated really left me feeling like they don't want business.

Peter Linda W.

Yelp
The food was fantastic. After reading the review from Raeleen we decided to check it out. She was 100% spot on!! I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for great tasting authentic Mexican food originating from New Mexico.

Yelp
Swanky, trendy atmosphere with upscale Mexican food. They offer chips & salsa when you sit down and they are yummy! I usually keep it simple & order the Chipotle Shrimp Tacos & they are OUTSTANDING! I sit at the bar to eat when I am there with my hubby and the service is good. This place is a must try! You will love it! Outdoor seating is available & it is in a a great location with plenty of parking! Cheers to a great experience Sopapilla's! Gracias!

Yelp
This was a recommendation from a coworker while visiting Nashville. This restaurant did not disappoint. Really good, fresh food and very tasty. We went around 5pm so the establishment was not super busy and the wait service was attentive. Will definitely be back when I return to Nashville.

Yelp
We came here for a dinner for my husband's lab. It was a last minute decision as the restaurant we were supposed to go to ended up closing for a private event, but it really paid off! I called Sopapillas immediately and they were able to accommodate our group of eight without a problem. The restaurant is very nicely decorated in a Southwestern style that you would see at high class restaurants in Arizona. The service was impeccable. Our waiter came and checked on us frequently and make sure we had everything that we needed. Drinks were delicious. Sangria was cold and refreshing on a hot day. What I really have to compliment them on was the excellent arrays of vegetarian options. The chips and salsa were plentiful and delicious. The salsa was a very nice medium flavor, and you could tell it was made fresh. We ordered guacamole, queso, and the skillet nachos. The queso has lard in it so I didn't try it but other people in our party tasted it and said it was delicious. I ordered the Fajita Portabella quesadillas. The vegetables were hot and the mushrooms were juicy. The street corn was the best part of the meal. It tasted so fresh and authentic. I ordered mine on the cob, but you can order it off the cob as well, which is probably easier to eat. Both my kids had a different kids meals which came with a drink. Both got lemonade, which tasted fresh. My youngest son had the quesadilla and french fries, and it all came out hot and delicious with large portions. My oldest son (he is six) had mac & cheese and a fruit bowl. He said "Sopapillas is one of the best Mexican restaurants. I never could have imagined that it could be that good! " We ended the meal with hot Sopapillas for dessert. Some came with strawberries and chocolate and some came with honey. One bite and it transported me back to Arizona and sunset dinners with my husband and his family.

Yelp
Awesome food - loved the carne asada tacos and the tamales were killer. The seasonal apple spice martinis are a must try!

Yelp
I've been to this location several times this year. The staff are always friendly. Ambiance is good. The food isn't your typical Mexican cuisine. The food has it's own flare. It's moderately priced. I had the shrimp and grits. Awesome!! My wife had the Brisket Burger. She said it was overcooked and needed some condiments. My reply to her was, who goes to a mexican restaurant and gets a burger? Give it a try if you are in the area. It's worth a try.

Yelp
Some updates. Sopapilla's salsa is so good, I could just drink it. Warm chips and it's a winning combination. Next time I need to ask if I could buy a big container to take home with me. Draft Mexican beer and the dip sampler is a great way to start a meal. Considering how good the salsa, and all the dip trio are, particularly the guac and the queso, you'll get pretty full before any main plates arrive. So it's excellent that they have the Dos Tacos option for dinner - perfect size to try a couple tacos and not be too stuffed when you're done. Chipotle shrimp taco is excellent, the shrimp were particularly plump, juicy, perfectly cooked. The Original taco was good, though it made me long for a simple traditional ground beef tex mex crispy taco. But no worries, there are enough other taco selections to choose from. I did find the tacos a bit too messy to try to eat on the metal taco stands provided, so quickly switched to moving the tacos just to the plate, sans metal stand. Sopapillas tends toward being hot and loud. Parking is of the wander around and hope something turns up variety. But it's a good choice for local (New) Mexican, so these faults can be overlooked on the occasional visit. Finally, huge kudos that they take reservations. If you're driving across town on a weekend evening, it's great to know there'll be a table waiting for your party.

Yelp
Food was to go. Was packed well. Food was delicious. Hostess was friendly and great.

Yelp
I'm not sure whether to give them 3 or 4 stars. Hear me out... The food, excellent. Cooked well, great flavor, good sized portions, but it's more than that. The service was just meh. I mean, they were nice enough... but they forgot about us quite often. We sat with empty drinks for the majority of the meal, and the manager walked by our table 4 times with a full pitcher of water.... And the ambiance was very strange. Supposed to be a Mexican restaurant, however there is ZERO decor that tells me that it is. And the music was upbeat B52's stuff like that... in a Mexican restaurant?! Didn't make any sense.

Yelp
We ate there awhile ago. It was on a Saturday between the lunch and dinner runs. The entire restaurant was filthy. Floors had napkins and food on the floor, and the ables hadn't been bussed. Nonetheless we stayed, ordered and ate. The food was cold and dried out as if it had been plated and sitting under a heat lamp; although I can't be sure. It just tasted and appeared like it was not fresh. Needles to say we haven't been back and probably won't. Sorry I didn't take pictures to share.
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
Incredible food and great service! The fajitas are incredible! We also love the bbq quesadillas and the 3-enchilada plate. The queso is great as well. The actual dessert sopapillas are nothing like true New Mexico sopapillas, but they were okay.
google avatar

Casey D.

Yelp
Sopapillas is awesome. I've had the nachos and the fajitas and I think that their brisket nachos would be my chosen last meal on earth.

Katie P.

Yelp
We visited for our first time for an anniversary dinner. We arrived early for our reservation and even on a Saturday night, we didn't have to wait for a table. The cocktails were delicious. We were impressed with the extra step they took to baffle the ceilings...we expected it to be so noisy inside and it really wasn't at all. Those are the details that foster a comfortable dining experience. The chips were hot, fresh and lightly crispy and the salsa was perfect. We had Huevos Rancheros and the Ahi street tacos and both were flavorful and filling. We left with to go boxes! Last but certainly not least, our server Bob was prompt, attentive and really nice. He was very professional but also kind and friendly. The manager checked in on everyone. We will definitely be back!

Susan P.

Yelp
Great food and also great service by Eve our waitress We will be back to try other dishes

Yelp
I've been to Sopapillas four times in the last 6 weeks. Everything I've had has been outstanding. Sopapilla platter, hangar steak fajitas, pineapple margarita with a tajin rim, and today's lunch, Tres Tamales (pictured). The food is delicious, and the service is what all restaurants wish they had. My server today was Maria, and I've never had better service. Kudos to a very well-run restaurant.

Yelp
They take reservations which is great. Arrived and quickly seated. Party of 5. The brought out two baskets of chips and a bowl of salsa. Salsa was great and chips were good. I tried the street tacos brisket, chicken and steak. I have read where people complain that their tacos fell apart but no issue tonight. Food served hot. Ambiance is cool with a big fire scene on the TV and Christmas trees. Service was also good. Will return

Yelp
We are here with my brother, his kids, and one of my nieces, and we loved it. The server was excellent. He was attentive to e t when the cokes and chips needed refilling. We sat at a table in the bar room to watch football. If you are a queso person or not, order their queso!!! It is not your average queso. It is extra cheesy and has all sorts of diced peppers, beans, and such. When you dip the crispy, thin chips, the queso stays on the chip, and sometimes a string of cheese comes with your chip. Our group gave the queso five stars. The adults had a skinny margarita (the best drink ordered), a watermelon margarita that was too sweet, and a Paloma, which was ok. We ordered the shrimp quesadillas, and we highly recommend them. It was grilled to perfection with lots of cheese, shrimp, and their twist of crispy bacon. I took lots of the bacon out as I prefer the taste of the shrimp. The Dos tacos had one good one, the hot chicken, and one not good one, the fish. I love fish, but it was too fishy for me. I took one bite, and that was it; back to the quesadilla for me. My nephew had the kid's quesadilla, and he said it was five stars too. My niece had dinner that was grilled chicken, rice, and sautéed veggies, and she loved it. It was a considerable portion, so I got half of it to go, and my brother at the rest of it the next day and said it was really flavorful. My brother ate the enchiladas and liked them. We would return for the queso, skinny margarita, chicken dinner, and quesadillas.

Yelp
Nice food, little pricey. Good customer service, chef himself came out to serve the dessert for my son's special day. Ample parking.
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
Food is a 5. Server was a 3. Monday lunch date with my partner. IT WAS DELICIOUS. Yes a bit on the pricey side, but worth it. Chips and salsa very tasty - fresh chips and a Smokey chipotle salsa. Make sure you check in on Yelp to get that CHILE CON QUESO. The braised beef rolled tacos and the El Pepe Shrimp Quesadilla holy options Batman. These dishes were phenomenal. The flavor layering is on point. The white sangria and the pineapple margarita great options.
google avatar

Jake M.

Yelp
Don't bother. Crazy expensive for what you get and less tasty than a place like jalisco right down the road.
google avatar

Yelp
The atmosphere is quiet and quaint upscale Mexican type bistro, very good food . Service was excellent we were seated in a timely manner drinks and food were . We live about an hour out and happen to be in Franklin for the weekend this was a good find !

Terri L.

Yelp
After our original plans fell through, we visited on NYE without a reservation and were graciously seated immediately. The room flickered with the lights from the candles as music was playing in the background. Many families were also there enjoying the oncoming celebration of a New Year The serve was polite and very attentive to our dietary restrictions. The food was plated perfectly and served promptly. The brisket enchilada was delicious!
google avatar

Eloy C.

Yelp
Great restaurant that makes everything fresh including their tortillas. It is New Mexico style food. We ordered the dip sampler, beef/chicken/shrimp fajitas, street tacos, fish taco, shrimp taco, stuffed sopapilla, and regular sopapillas with honey for desert. We will come back for more.
google avatar

Scott G.

Yelp
Great local place. Nice atmosphere. Inside and outside seating. Food is delicious. Definitely recommend the Mexican Street Corn.
google avatar

Rick S.

Yelp
Waited over 30 minutes just to get our 1st drinks, which were made wrong. Overheard the unskilled bartender berate our waitress for asking where our drinks were. Finally got our margaritas but they didn't taste right. I've never sent a margarita back in my life! The 2nd attempt was better, but not by much! The food was good but overpriced for such small portions. We wanted to stop in for a quick bite and drink as we had food from Costco in the car. An hour an a half later, we were finally on our way home. Will we be back? Probably not. Oh, our waitress was wonderful! They used to give you a sopapilla at the end of your meal, apparently not anymore.
google avatar

Shay T.

Yelp
Tried it for the first time and it was very good.. We had the shrimp quesadilla and shrimp fajitas and both did not disappoint. They also know how to make a great drink .. I asked for Tito's and grapefruit juice and our server Tina I believe was her name and hopefully I'm right, suggested fresh grapefruit muddled in which is way better. She gave us such amazing service , can't wait to go back. I suggest making a reservation cause it gets very busy.
google avatar

Amber M.

Yelp
Excellent dinner, service, and ambiance! Wow, how have I not been here before. Homemade flour tortillas, chips & salsa, fajitas, hatch chile quesadilla, sopapillas- everything was excellent. Really good service, friendly and well paced meal. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Katie N.

Yelp
This place was nice for a quick lunch. The food was very fresh and hot, service was good. It was just mediocre to me. The quesadilla I ordered didn't have a lot of flavor to it and they put so much chicken in it and not enough cheese.
google avatar

Brian N.

Yelp
Simple really.... Great food, really fresh, and great service. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Frankie S.

Yelp
The quesadilla was good, but the tacos were terrible. It needed salt, a lot of it, as if the cook forgot to season them so I was just eating meat. The street corn had red cabbage which was weird and not needed. let's stop making street food boujee. It's good because it's simple, comforting, and all about the flavors.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
Great Mexican /southwest food! The server was excellent and friendly. They have a very sophisticated look with well trained staff. Highly recommend this restaurant for a night out. On a warm night the patio is fantastic.

Xanthia F.

Yelp
The food here is always fresh and delicious. Would recommend the guacamole with grilled shrimp to share for sure!! The service is always great at the bar with sweet ladies working.

Danise S.

Yelp
Ambiance is great. My teenage son was a little worried that we dressed too causally. We were seated fairly quickly without a reservation....But after that, it was a very long wait for the foods (45 minutes?). The server never refilled our empty glasses. Food is ok but we don't really care for them. While we will not return, it is a place for a date night when taste of food is not the most important.

David L.

Yelp
Very solid SW cuisine, esp for Nashville. Tasty cocktails. Nice SW motif and ambiance. Friendly professional service. Not too expensive.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
A more upscale Mexican restaurant that offers very good food, an attentive staff, and a cool setting to dine in. They brought me out the chips and salsa and I wasn't overly fond of the salsa, but the meal proved far more better. I had the sopapilla with braised pork topped "Christmas tree" style (with both red and green hatch chile sauce) along with Mexican street corn. It was very good, though it would only had been enhanced if they had a homemade hot sauce. I made due with the bottle of hot sauce they brought me to get a bit more heat. Sopapilla's has great reviews and finally dining here, I see why. I recommend here. It is not the cheapest (lunch cost me nearly twenty five dollars), but Sopapilla's elevates Mexican food beyond the standard national chain offerings.

Nadia P.

Yelp
We just came from this place, Worst food I ever had this place sucks the fish tacos was dry and salty The food was cold by the time it got to our table, honestly should not even feed this to any animals ,I don't think they deserve 1 star .The waitress was totally no good we wasted about 1/1/2 hour there to find out the chips and salsa was the best .We will never come back to this place again don't waste your money and time And fyi if you want fish tacos go to the next building at herban market it's the best.
google avatar

Missy D.

Yelp
This is our go to restaurant for Mexican food. We usually get the Tres enchiladas but tonight we tried the sampler which was really good and the green chili Tamale. Be sure to try their queso dip it is one of the best around.

Yelp
I've never had a bad experience here. The last visit was above and beyond exceptional. They were short-staffed but you wouldn't know it. It was nice to see the managers stepping up and helping out their servers. With Covid protocols they did a nice job seating people and keeping everyone safe. Food: Exceptional as always but this was the fist time for the Grilled Pineapple Guacamole and let me just say, my brain broke when I took my first bite. The flavors literally exploded in my mouth. You get all the flavors of chipotle honey-glazed pineapple, bacon and queso fresco. I'm pretty sure the table next to us heard my uncomfortable moans of pleasure because they quickly asked which Guacamole we ordered. It is a must try and honestly, I could eat that and drink the green-chili habenero margaritas all day. Their skinny margarita is absolutely delicious as wel and is only $6 on Mondays! Lastly, I had the Quesadilla Del Mar with crab, shrimp, Brie, chilies, bacon and onion with a yummy mango chili glaze. Seriously y'all must go and eat here! Makes me want to never eat at a regular Mexican restaurant again.
