How Chains Like Chipotle Get a Pass on Appropriation | Eater

"A Cuban fast-casual operation co-led by owners who brought on a Cuban chef as an active owner to shape the menu and ensure cultural integrity; transparent naming—such as labeling a modified item “Pernil with a Twist”—is used deliberately to signal when dishes have been adapted rather than presented as traditional." - Jenny Dorsey

20 Top Fast-Casual Restaurants of Midtown Manhattan | Eater NY

"Simple, authentic Cuban food is the name of the game at Sophie’s, where options include a Cuban sandwich, a roast pork sandwich, and sides like maduros (fried sweet plantains), tostones (fried plantains), and fried yucca. There’s also a curious number of larger chicken entrees like baked chicken, breaded chicken, grilled chicken, and spicy grilled chicken." - Jasmine Ting

Where to Eat Near Your PHD Offices | Eater

"Sophie’s Cuban Cuisine has become a New York lunch staple for good reason: Open since 1997, the Luna family has perfected the Cuban lunch counter for the masses of Manhattan office workers. And you won’t find larger portions of tender, spiced meat anywhere else in the neighborhood. The crowd favorite may be the oxtail stew (served as the Monday, Wednesday, Friday special), especially when served with a heaping side of yellow rice and fried plantains. There’s always a Cubano sandwich too, but insiders know to order it (or the equally tasty pernil sandwich) with a twist: topped with fried plantains and Sophie’s special green sauce, made with fresh jalapeños." - Marcy Franklin

Located near my hotel and reviews were good so decided to check it out. Friends liked their Cuban sandwiches and fries. I opted for the veggie platter with plantains, rice and beans, garbanzo beans, and veggie medley. Good sized portion for the price. Food was good but our dining experience was challenged by the very loud music. Hard to have a conversation. Overall though would recommend.

This place calls for immediate action. The workers' attention to needs is excellent! I'll go out of my way to eat at Sophie's Cuban Cuisine again. They deliver consistently fresh, high-quality dishes despite the casual, fast format. I stake my reputation on this restaurant's quality.

Went to pick up lunch with coworkers. The line moves quickly. There are two lines, one for the hot food and the other for sandwiches; they also have two touch screens to place your order if you don’t want to stand in line and wait. Glad I went today cause it was oxtail stew day (M/W/F) which is delicious along with moro rice and veggie medley. Their green sauce is the best and goes really well with the plate and empanadas (esp the beef empanadas). Coworker is obsessed with their ropa vieja so give that one a try if you don’t like oxtail.

I had food delivered. The cheese empanada was v good. The Cuban press sandwich was a huge disappointment; the bread was neither crisp or crunchy. Delivery came earlier than projected, EXCEPT no one phoned me to say it was coming earlier, nor that it was already in reception/front desk.

I could tell the workers are usually nice but when I went right at opening, nothing was ready. The food I wanted wasn't out yet, and after buying they implied they couldn't even clear one table for me to sit and eat (all the tables still had chairs up and weren't "ready yet"). So I ate outside since I was lucky enough to be near Bryant Park and voila - there's a hair in my food. Don't recommend.

My team would often order from Sophie’s catering menu (pre pandemic). There was something for everyone and helped after lunch agendas to seem more doable There was always more than enough. It felt nostalgic to pop into this location for empanadas before heading over to Grand Central. It’s in a great location and although on 6th Avenue, the environment was clean and pleasant. The employees are friendly enough and definitely attentive. It’s worth visiting for a quick meal, eat in or takeout. Thank you.

Sophie's exceeded expectations, living up to the glowing recommendation from a friend. The star of the show, without a doubt, was their empanadas. I tried both the beef and the chicken, and each bite was flavorful. The beef, in particular, stood out with its well-seasoned perfection, earning the title of my personal favorite. Aside from the fantastic empanadas, I was pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness of the bathroom. It's a detail that often goes unnoticed but adds to the overall positive dining experience.

Don't even think about coming here 12-1Pm. Lines are crazy for subpar food. I only got this because I was soooo hungry and needed food in my belly because I was going out after work and didn't want to with an empty stomach. This hits the spot when you have nothing else. Food isn't that delicious. And always makes my stomach hurt. They reduced the size and quality of the empanadas. They always have a weird burnt taste without the burnt look. Lastly, staff here is never friendly. The guy in the back sandwich making area is kind. But the ladies on the line making the food and cashier have never been nice to me. Sadly I need to just take it and not take it personal because this is only good cuz of convenience and when there's nothing else. I just wanted some plain arroz morro - first off she gave me a big size I wanted a small cup worth which I've gotten before. But she gave me a stank look when I said I wanted something smaller. Told her forget it. Anyway it is what it is.
