Sopo - Review - New York - The Infatuation

"Among other things, this fast casual Korean spot near Madison Square Garden has a green sauce called perilla princess that you can get poured over rice bowls with your choice of bulgogi, smoked chicken, spicy pork, or tofu, alongside banchan. Can we be vulnerable for a second? It’s now our life goal to one day be called perilla princess. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

I was visiting from LA and I had heard about Sopo, so I wanted to try while I was in town. And it was definitely worth the visit! As someone who grew up eating Korean food, the offerings at Sopo tasted just like the ones I was familiar with. I think they did a great job of staying authentic, while trying to present the food in a more accessible (convenient?) way for others to enjoy. I’d recommend their staple “Seoul Steak” bowl or any of the gimbaps (=rolls) to begin with. Ask for their sauce recommendations too, and they will take care of you very well! Hope to see a Sopo restaurant out in LA one day!

This place is like a Korean version of chipotle. Coworkers and I decided to check it out and ordered online for pickup (the estimated time wasn’t accurate and our food was ready earlier than stated). Even after telling the staff our names for pickup, they insisted for a receipt so make sure you have that handy which is a bit cumbersome. I built my own plate and selected wild squid, purple rice, soy dipped egg, kale namul, and cucumber kimchi with a side of samjang aioli. Also added a side of beef bulgogi and got the Korean iced corn tea. High quality food, but the portion size can be worked on. Was a bit disappointed with the wild squid but the beef bulgogi was tasty. My favorite out of it all was actually the samjang aioli. My coworker also got a bulgogi kimbap which was about $14 (similar price for a plate) which is expensive. We expected to be stuffed with filling but was average, which was a bit disappointing. Not sure if it’s worth the trek again.

Google
Love this new gem! Best quality Korean food in New York at an incredibly reasonable price. Everything I got was delicious and tasted super fresh. Special shout out to the smoked chicken, which was perfectly soft and juicy, and the bulgogi kimbap is a must try. 10/10! I highly recommend this place and will definitely be back soon.

Google
I forgot to take a picture of the food because it was so delicious. I’ve never had such a tasty Korean style version of kale and broccoli in my life. The meat tasted so authentic and flavorful and the soy marinated egg was amazing too. It had the perfect egg yolk!

Google
A quick, easy and super flavorful lunch. Loved my plate and will be back. You can build your own plate of Korean BBQ and banchan — my favorites were the Gold Pumpkin Mash and Cucumber Kimchi with their perfect Beef Bulgogi. They also have an assortment of kimbap being rolled to order

Discovered a new Korean spot @eatsopo in Manhattan! You can choose one protein, three sides, one carb, and one sauce to build a colorful platter! Among the sides, my favorite is the Korean marinated egg! It’s rich in flavor and slightly sweet. The smoked chicken even has cartilage you can bite into, not dry like chicken breast. The steak is perfectly mixed with fatty bits, adding a rich taste with every bite! The kale is well-seasoned with a hint of garlic and a slight sweetness. I picked purple rice, which is chewy, and it’s topped with bits of seaweed and sesame. The kimbap is freshly rolled! It’s delicious on its own, and even better with sauce! This place was started by 3 Michelin chefs. Just 10isn bucks you get a filling, balanced, and nutritious meal. Such a great value! They also have a fun “K-Culture Passport” where you can check off the restaurants you visit!

Google
Very authentic Korean food with a twist. It's a new Korean fast-casual spot in Midtown! Overall, the staff is friendly, the space is very clean, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. I highly recommend the Spicy Pork plate (w/ purple rice and saucy dumplings), cucumber kimchi, and bulgogi kimbap. Looking forward to coming back!

Google
My message to the owner: prioritize genuine customer feedback instead of spending money on someone to generate 5-star reviews. 1. The Kimbap is overpriced and only average in taste—I wouldn’t spend $15 on the bulgogi Kimbap again. You’re better off going to K-town for cheaper, better options. 2. The regular bowls are pricey, and most of the items are add-ons, so the final bill is unexpectedly high, more than $20 per bowl. 3. Only two side dishes are offered. Of course, there are suppliment options as well. 4. The main bowl itself lacks flavor and is not refined. 5. No free water. You have to buy a bottle of water.

Yelp
TLDR: Sopo is a Korean fast-casual concept. Had the spicy pork box, delivered and I thought it was good. Will definitely order again or if I'm in the area, check out in-person. I 'd been curious about Sopo for awhile, so the stars aligned and I got it delivered. Packaging is good and I think it's cool that you can get a jeyuk plate, with purple rice and some banchan-esque sides in Midtown. The purple rice I added some roasted laver and it came with a generous amount of meat. It was seasoned well, tender and just the right amount of char you expect. The sides were a broccoli and potato were simple but good and I did enjoy the sauces. I used to work closer to here but if I find myself in the - I'll definitely stop in again.

Yelp
Got this delivered through GrubHub for lunch. I got the smoke chicken, marinated eggs, bulgogi beef, roasted soy marinated potatoes, pickled cucumbers salad. The portion to price ratio is terrible. Flavors were lacking or off. Would not recommend since you can walk a bit to find better options in Korean Town/32nd St.

Yelp
We came here to pick up a quick lunch! Ordering was super easy - I ordered a bowl with white rice with some furikake sprinkled on it, spicy pork and chose my own three sides of potatoes, broccoli and soy dipped egg. The ssam aioli sauce was a wonderful addition. I was in and out within 5-10 minutes. This is exactly how you would imagine a quick Korean lunch taste like.

Yelp
Wow, amazing Korean food to go. I got the bulgogi with rice, broccoli and potatoes that was part of the MealPal of the night. I would not have chosen potatoes and rice, but boy was it tasty! The potatoes were very delicious. The meat was excellent and the entire bowl very satisfying! Close to the LIRR so you can grab a platter to go and have it at home. Love it.

Yelp
I ordered delivery but this place did an amazing job with delivering quality! The food was packaged beautifully and it was delicious! I recommend this place to anyone wanting to have some delicious Korean food.

Yelp
The food at Sopo is very tasty but a bit over priced. I ordered the make your own plate and with bulgogi and a majority of the sides cost extra, unless you wanted something very basic. This felt a bit misleading to me. The staff was very helpful in explaining the options. There is a small eating area on the side if you want to hear there.
google avatar

Kenneth M.

Yelp
It was quick to pickup, interior was clean and staff was responsive. In terms of the food, it was alright but portions were small for the price. There was too little proteins. You get better tasting food at hmart food court. The veggies on the sides were good though! The location being somewhat close to KTown (a couple avenues away), I expected better tasting food. Overall, it was underwhelming and I don't see myself returning as there are many other better options around.

Yelp
I stopped by Sopo for a quick meal before a train at Moynihan (just a couple of blocks away). Think Korean fast casual - quick, affordable, and delicious. They offer plates (including a build your own option with one base, one protein, three sides, and a sauce), Kimbaps (Korean seaweed rice rolls), and sides. It's a Chipotle- or CAVA-style in its ordering. If you're making your own plate, you choose your base (white rice, purple rice, greens, or half and half); base garnishes (sesame seeds, crispy seaweed, or their spice blend); your protein (Seoul steak, beef bulgogi, spicy pork, smoked chicken, or baked tofu); three sides (gold pumpkin mash, saucy dumplings, garlic broccoli, sweet soy roasted potato, soy dipped egg, kale namul, cucumber kimchi, kimchi salad, and napa cabbage kimchi); and a sauce (Ssam aioli, fire sauce, sweet heat sauce, and perilla princess). It's made to order and very fast. On my first visit on Saturday I ordered a Seoul steak kimbap (seared flatiron steak inside their kimbap of kale, carrots, pickled daikon, tofu, and fish cake, all wrapped in rice and seaweed) and a side of soy dipped egg. I thought it was healthy and fast without sacrificing any flavor. It's definitely a place I'd be happy to return to for a healthy and quick lunch or dinner. I'd be thrilled to have a Sopo near me. I'm sure I'll be back before another train!

Sandy D.

Yelp
Quick option with seating! I got a custom bowl, with Seoul Steak as the protein. The steak was fortunately not dry and chewy! It went well with the delicious Garlic Broccoli and Sweet Soy Roasted Potatoes. My only dislike was the Sopo Greens coleslaw, which was too dry and bland for my liking. I loved their unique sauce options like Ssam Aioli. This is a great fusion of Korean with fast food bento.

Yelp
Got takeout through my company's group order. One of the best lunch meals I've had at work. The food is top quality and good portions. The tofu was flavorful and had a nice consistency. I got it with purple rice, which was cooked perfectly and also had a nice texture and flavor. Love the sweet and spicy chili dipping sauce it came with, the little side salad and pumpkin mash which was sweet, yummy and had some chunks in it. I also really like the broccoli that was charred. I would order here again!

Yelp
Sopo is a hard pass for me. Honestly wouldve been 1 star but the A La Carte Baked Tofu was not bad. I regret ordering from here, there are MANY more better fast casual korean spots nearby in the same price range that offer better quality and flavors and better portions. I read the Yelp reviews before ordering- not sure how they have 4.5 stars. Numerous reviews highlighted the Beef Bulgogi and said it was great. It was not. It was not flavorful at ALL, tasted Sao bland - as if barely any marinade used. It was also not the best quality meat/some tough chunks and a larger than average amount of inedible fat pieces throughout for bulgogi. The potatos and brocolli were flavorful and quite good although 2 of the 4 pieces of brocolli I received were very burnt. Quality issues. I ordered two A La Carte Soy Dipped Egg , I reallly like these at other places and planned to have one tomorrow. Never in my life have I received a soy marinated egg that was presliced- and the photos both on the Sopo website and in the reviews the soy marinated A La Carte Soy Dipped Egg is only cut in half, why were mine butchered inti 5 pieces?? Also the knife that was used to slice it was clearly not properly cleaned/there was some cross contamination issue as the egg tasted more like what the knife had previously been used for (I suspect kimchi or kimchi salad) than soy. Major disappointment. I would recommend Ongi or Woorijip for same price much better flavor and quality

Yelp
I have gotten takeout here a few times. The first time I just got sides which were super small. The second time I got a tofu entree which was good but also still small for the price. The pickup time is accurate. There is seating here too but might get crowded quickly. There are others fast casual Korean places I like more but this is good for another quick option as it is newer and not as popular as the places in ktown.

Yelp
This new Korean fast food place opened in our building. I've been twice. It's Chipotle-style where you build your own bowl. I love the purple rice and the sweet and spicy sauce. The bulgogi is ok and the chicken is very good. Wish they had a few more choices for vegetables like carrots or green beans to lighten this up a bit. For me this lasts for two lunches, so it's a good value. The manager comped me an aioli on one of my visits because he wanted me to try it. I'm not usually a fan of aiolis, but this one I like.
google avatar

Neil M.

Yelp
I make an effort to try new places occasionally during work lunches. Sopo had been on my list because I'd walked past a few times, and I'm glad I tried it. Think Korean fast casual food, bowls that are made with your standard base, protein and toppings. I tried purple rice and spicy pork with roasted potatoes, soy marinated egg and Napa cabbage kimchi. Delicious, at par with any other Korean fare in the area (which is saying a lot), and the staff were particularly friendly.
google avatar

Najwa G.

Yelp
Sopo gives me Korean Chipotle vibes and is obviously miles better than Chipotle. Everything is fresh and is made to prepare. I got the beef bulgogi kimbap that was quite tasty. I really liked the fish cake inside of the kimbap and learned that that can be a part of kimbap (and makes it quite tasty at that). I would stop by again for a grab and go quick dinner.
google avatar

Yelp
It is an unassuming place under scaffolded area near Penn station so it's a pretty convenient spot! I think most people ordered takeout. I also ordered takeout with a friend and it was delicious. I loved how they already had set meals but still gave the option to customize. The tofu and egg were cooked to perfection. The only gripe I have is they mixed up our sides. It was confusing at first. I would stop by again if I were ever in the area. It looked very efficient and they were quick to attend to me when I stepped in.
google avatar

Jennie K.

Yelp
Was not the biggest fan of this spot. The meat was dry and flavor was off. The dipping sauces tasted weird to me as well. Wish the salad had some sort of dressing on it. Other sides were average. Got the Ubereats deal of buy one get one free but I ended up not eating the second one I got.
google avatar

Yelp
First time ordering and shocked that it was really good. Lots of flavor, some heat and good portions. Great for a quick meal. I also tried the pear drink which was delicious! I will order again.

Yelp
Loved this place! Perfect place to grab a quick lunch to-go or they have a sitting area in the back if you want to sit down. I got the spicy pork plate & it was bomb. My friend made her own bowl & the gold pumpkin mash which i regret not getting as well. We also tried the bulgogi kimbap & would recommend

Luke L.

Yelp
Amazing spot for a quick Korean delight! I always get massive cravings for their spicy pork, spicy dumplings, and kale namul - sooo good. Sopo is my go-to place for a quick, flavorful bite. If you're looking for something tasty, healthy, and fast, I highly recommend it!

Yelp
I questioned whether public praise helps or hurts. Delicious food paired with good value and outstanding customer care. The restaurant maintains cleanliness and those in charge are friendly, responsive and honest. Sopo makes ordinary ingredients special. You'll enjoy the quality at this restaurant!

Yelp
My coworkers and I decided to try this place after I saw a YouTuber I follow come here, so I was excited. However the food was disappointing. The portions were ok but there was hardly any flavor and some of the items were extremely salty. I got the smoked chicken plate and my coworkers got the beef bulgogi plate and the Seoul steak plate. Among the 3 meats, the beef bulgogi had some taste, whereas the steak and chicken tasted like nothing. The soy dipped egg was super salty, but I did enjoy the jammy yolk. The sweet soy roasted potatoes tasted like soy sauce and the cucumber kimchi wasn't tangy or spicy. I had mine with purple rice and greens so the texture sort of saved it.
google avatar

Carrie G.

Yelp
This is a good place for a quick lunch! We grabbed take out from here. The tofu plate was pretty good. Perfectly fried tofu. The gold pumpkin mash was delicious. The smoked chicken plate was also pretty good. I do regret ordering the salad sides for each of these plates though because it was so dry and just not very appetizing looking. THe only dressing you really get is gochujang and I don't think it went very well together. Baby loved the sweet soy roasted potatoes. Overall, a bit pricey in my opinion for what you get. But has decent food!

Yelp
Sopo is almost like the Korean DIG. It's pretty solid. Portions are decent, the protein options are great, and there are plenty of side options as well.
google avatar

Amrit A.

Yelp
Food is pretty good and the staff is nice! My favorite is the beef bulgogi and the spicy pork. I will be deducting a star though since I wanted to just try a small piece of meat so that I may like it next time. The manager straight up said no. I'm already spending $24 on the bowl. Maybe I'm a bit entitled, but I think that's just the manager being cheap. Overall though, I would recommend this place.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved eating at Sopo! If you're looking for a quick meal or something to bring to the office, this is perfect. Everything I had was great. If I had to choose one standout item, the gold pumpkin mash was out of this world. The saucy dumplings were also something quite special. The service is great too! No servers, you order at the counter. The environment is clean and tidy with a small seating area in the back.

Grace S.

Yelp
$15.76 lunch in manhattan its great! Food was good and friendly service. Personally would prefer if the food was a bit less salty but thats my preference.

Sean L.

Yelp
Sopo is a perfect blend of traditional korean comfort food and creative twists. I tried the steak bowl, and it was very satisfying and flavorful. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE PUMPKIN MASH!

John K.

Yelp
Korean fast casual, think chipotle. Offers menu based on traditional recipes but with a modern twist. I personally enjoyed the smoked chicken and kale namul. Staff were kind and responsive.

Kris C.

Yelp
Tasty and balanced but Portions are very very small for the price . Even the rice ordered with extra side dishes still left me hungry. It's like one bite
google avatar

Todd M.

Yelp
I was surprised to hear about Sopo and was happy to see a new fast-casual Korean restaurant that specializes in my kinda Seoul Food. The Sopo Crew were really welcoming & nice which was refreshing. Seoul Steak and Beef Bulgogi was delicious. The purple rice or "heukmi bap" (흑미밥) was a great carb to add to the meal too. The assembly-line service model, similar to Chipotle, was great and efficient. Will order again!

Bill C.

Yelp
Great service, nice clean ambiance. Can customize your bento boxes. Seating inside is available

R S.

Yelp
Food was decent got the spicy pork and purple Rice. Not sure if I would be back given the explosive diarrhea I suffered the next morning. Can't say for sure it was from this place but odds are.

Yelp
Great food and great staff! Easy to order and the chicken was really good. Not too pricey at all.

John S.

Yelp
I recently stumbled upon Sopo on my way from Penn station. This fast casual spot is a hidden gem that serves delicious Korean dishes, Tried the bulgogi rice bowl. Beef was tender and packed with flavor. Complemented by fresh veggies and rice. Staff is super friendly and there is no wait with how efficiently the restaurant is staffed. Highly recommend.

Matthew L.

Yelp
Sauce is great , very convenient and tasty. Owner was nice, and the menu is very inviting for future options !

Mei Y.

Yelp
Food was tasty. I had the smoked chicken. Chicken was tender and tasty. It paired well with the egg and potatoes. Portion side was good for me. Would recommend. Service was great too. Place was clean.

Gabriel H.

Yelp
Food was amazing! Came here on my break because it is right in front of my job and I'm definitely coming back several times a week!

T K.

Yelp
I eat here literally every day and have not been let down once. Highly recommend for those trying to experience authentic high quality Korean food at a more than reasonable price point.

Kamryn P.

Yelp
Amazing fast causal. Loved the spicy pork platter and the bulgogi kimbap. Will definitely be back!

Griselda H.

Yelp
The staff was very helpful and welcoming ! The food was really great and clean! This is a must try spot!

Jai Jung K.

Yelp
I usually get CAVA for lunch but decided to give this place a try. Love the diversity of the menu. This became my new go to lunch place. The staffs are very kind and line moves quickly. Highly recommend
