Vegan soul food: fried tofu, mac n cheese, gumbo

"Souley Vegan has returned after a two-year closure, this time in a new Jack London space. The plant-based soul food menu includes Creole cheddar mac, jambalaya arancini, and fried “chikn” tenders and sandwiches." - Julia Chen

"Chef Tamearra Dyson is returning to Oakland after the original restaurant closed a little over a year ago following 14 years in business, reopening at the former home of the Port at 101 Broadway in Jack London Square. For now she’s using the location as an events space — the brand’s Instagram shows off the beautifully decorated venue for a Valentine’s Day event — with plans to open fully as a restaurant the first week of April. To prepare the new space, Dyson announced the closure of her Martinez location inside the Market & Main food hall on January 1. The Jack London Square site will give her room to serve her special brand of vegan soul food with dinners Thursday through the weekend plus R&B brunch, and the two kitchens will allow her to "support up-and-coming chefs, rent the space to caterers, hold pop-ups, and use the additional kitchen for her upcoming meal prep line," according to Tablehopper." - Dianne de Guzman

"Souley Vegan is finally back, this time opening shop in the town of Martinez after the Oakland location closed down back in October 2023. Go big with the okra gumbo or jambalaya, or go for something quick, such as the Country Fried Chik’n or the Nashville Hot Lions Mane sliders. It’s now part of an indoor food hall and nearby bars can help round out the meal." - Dianne de Guzman

"I was relieved to see Souley Vegan alive again at the Market & Main public hall as of May 11, bringing back its full plant-based menu including items like calamari and Creole nachos." - Paolo Bicchieri

"I was saddened when owner Tamearra Dyson announced she closed her business at 301 Broadway after 14 years in October 2023, but she left a glimmer of hope by saying she planned to reopen elsewhere; now The Mercury News reports she will bring her restaurant to Martinez food hall Market & Main in April after representatives for the food hall reached out and the deal progressed, though no exact opening date was announced." - Dianne de Guzman
